The Shalom
Rabbi Heifetz’s Monthly Word Dear Friends, Thanks to all of you who attended the March 25th Roast & Toast event, and to so many of you who helped to plan and run the event. I was deeply honored, and it was an occasion I’ll always remember with great fondness and appreciation. We recently entered the 49-day period of the ‘Counting of the Omer’, when many Jews count down the days starting with the sec-ond day of Pesach, until the upcoming holi-day of Shavuot. The seasonal counting ritual carries many layers of symbolism. Among other meanings, this time period marks the
entrance of our Israelite ancestors into the Sinai wilderness after the Exo-dus from Egypt, within the narrative of our Torah. During that epic jour-ney, we experienced the excitement of liberation and great new possibili-ties, and also anxiety about entering the wilderness, with uncertainty about the future. We finally received comforting direction and guidance with the revelation of the Tablets of the Covenant at Mt. Sinai, which Jews today celebrate 7 weeks later at the holiday of Shavuot. For me, and also, I believe, for the Oseh Shalom community, this spring marks a time of transition, excitement and new possibility. It closely par-allels the journey that our ancestors undertook leaving Egypt, until the great revelation at Mt. Sinai. Thus, I believe that the Counting of the Omer this year can especially bolster our faith and resolve about discern-ing great new steps for the future, steps which we’ll discover as surely as our ancestors received the Tablets of the Covenant during their journey. I’m particularly excited about our upcoming Shabbat B’Yachad, Saturday morning, May 13th. Approximately 10 of our adults will be called for their adult B’nei Mitzvah celebration. Afterwards, we’ll hold a kiddush luncheon. RSVP information is forthcoming. I hope to see as many of you as possi-ble then and over the months ahead, before the end of my tenure as the rabbi of Oseh Shalom on July 31st. Shalom, Rabbi Doug

From the Executive Director Welcome to the May issue of the Shalom. The board has asked us to experiment further with the In Brief format, so we are going from a 16-page print edition to 8 pages. Everything we normally publish can be found in the online edition. The central focus of the In Brief will be on articles and advertisements. As we move into the next fiscal
year, our plan is to publish six print editions, while maintaining our regularly monthly schedule of 11 is-sues, which will all be featured online. One of the ide-as we have had is to make the High Holiday greeting book an expanded Shalom In Brief, which is intended to be taken home rather than for us to mail. We will print a small number of Shaloms for those who do not have online access, which will be mailed to those few households. We will also have copies available outside the Oseh Shalom office for prospec-tive members or those who wish to pick up a copy. This experiment will help the congregation save some money, while helping us find a balance of staying con-nected in ways that better work for our members and community. Before concluding, I would like to thank all those who have helped in the office: Mona Davis, Doris Kirsch-baum, Mariyan Kolev, Pauline Pivowar, and Shelly Sypes. A special thanks to Adam Goldfarb, who de-signed this issue and who will be shortly completing graduate school. We wish him all the best. Barry Nove Executive Director [email protected] 301-498-5151
Continued on back cover
Shalom Chevre,
I hope that everyone had a wonderful and mean-ingful Pesach.
Back in October we launched the project to repair the congregation’s original sefer Torah. Over the past months, this project has given to our com-munity so much, on so many levels. Under the skillful and passionate guide of our sofer, Jeffrey Shulevitz, so many people have had the oppor-tunity to help in the wonderful mitzvah of bringing the sefer Torah back to pristine condition.
Now that the work has been completed, the scroll is ready for its rededication and re-introduction to our community. This very special event will take place on Shabbat morning, May 13th and coin-cides with our Adult B’nei Mitzvah celebration. A great deal of work and dedication has gone into preparing for both, and it is very fitting that they are to take place together.
Towards the end of May, we will be observing the festival of Shavuot, and plans are being made for a joint Tikkun Leil Shavuot (evening study ses-sion) with our neighbors at Columbia Jewish Con-gregation. A great time was had by all at our joint Purim extravaganza, and we look forward to an-other occasion to celebrate with other members of the larger Reconstructionist community.
It seems lately, (and understandably so) that the questions Allison and I are asked most often are in regards to the search for our next Rabbi. If you are reading Brad Sach’s updates, you know that we are at the point where we are scheduling weekend “Scholar-in Residence” visits by candi-dates for the position. These weekends are an im-mensely important part of the selection process. The Rabbi Search committee has done a great deal of due diligence in sorting through the nu-merous applicants to find the best options for our community. These visits will give us all the chance to see these options in person and at work. Feed-back from the congregation on the candidates is absolutely necessary for an informed decision to be made. Please keep an eye on the calendar for

We have reserved the weekends of June 2-3, June 9-10, and June 16-17 for Rabbi-in-Residence auditions. During each of these week-ends, a top candidate will have the opportunity to lead services, teach classes, and become bet-ter acquainted with our congregation. After each of these weekends, congregants will of course have the opportunity to provide feedback to the Committee regarding the candidate’s talents and strengths. While we will continue to provide updates to the congregation, remember that confidentiality for our applicants is important, as well. Please con-tact Barry Nove, [email protected] with questions.
