What is unique about all Czech mountains? Te fact that you cannot

get lost there! You can roam around the picturesque landscape of

Czech mountains without being worried that you might get lost.

Every walking trail has been assigned its own colour – blue, red,

yellow or green. At crossings, you just follow your colour. Te trails

are designated by the same colours in tourist maps.

Te Czech ourist Club takes great care of the dense network

of marks. Tere are so many of them placed on trees, stones or

other objects that in most locations you see one within a visible

distance from the other.

At fork-ways and places of importance, you can also nd

signposts which show you the right direction and tell you how

many kilometers are still le to your destination.

For the sake of completeness, we can assure you that in Czech

mountains you will not meet any dangerous animals. Te only and

very rare exception is bear that might stray into the deep forests

of the Beskydy Mountains along the Slovakian border. However,

the chance of meeting a bear is practically zero.

The Krkonoše Mountains are suitable for: www.krkonose.eu

Te Krkonoše Mountains are the highest Czech mountain range.

From every corner of the foothills even from a bird’s eye view,

the Krkonoše Mountains’ panorama is magnicent. Te tops are

unmistakable; it seems that each mountain has its own face clearly

distinguishable even by an occasional visitor.

Te border mountain range is distinct, here and there with rocks

having poetic names (Dívčí, Mužské, Ženské kameny – Girls, Men,Women Stones), otherwise the tops are bare, covered with grass

and meadows with wild owers. In some places, the mountain

crests fall down the valleys (Sněžné jámy, Labský důl) completing

the dramatic picture of the landscape.

Your dose of adrenalineSummer in the Krkonoše Mountains is the best place for physical

activity. For hiking, Nordic walking, mountain biking and more

than anywhere else – for adrenaline.

from families with children to lovers of windsurng and yachting.

Anyone interested in sport will nd a real paradise in Šumava.A great number of natural and historical monuments have been

made accessible thanks to a dense network of cycle paths. In the

past, the communications network used for the purpose of the

frontier protection was passable only by military vehicles. Now,

the narrow but high-quality paths are available to cyclists. Te

most popular paths are found in the surroundings of Horská

Kvilda, towards the Vltava river source and in the region of

Kašperské Hory. For tourists whose physical condition is not

perfect, there is the area of Šumava plains with a minimum

amount of elevation changes.

Te hills of the Orlické Mountains are unpretentious, mild, and

covered with woods and pastures. Tis region seems to resist the rav-

ages of time and to these days has preserved its simple, folk character.

Anyone who likes hiking and dislikes crowds, who prefers meeting

roe deer to meeting a group of tourists, and likes picking mushrooms

and blueberries rather than attending attractions of the modern

tourist industry will nd plenty of relaxation and peace in this region.

Unconquered fortressesTe Jiráskova path, which is named aer the Czech classical author,

extends over the entire crest of the mountains. Whichever part

thereof you visit, you will nd one specicity, which is rarely found

to this extent somewhere else in the world – the pre-war fortication

system on the Czech border. In the deciduous woods, there are

small bunkers or larger fortresses hidden almost every kilometer,

which were built shortly prior to 1938 for the purpose of defence

of the Czechoslovak Republic. Te fortresses were never used in

the World War II. However, they have been preserved to this day as a silent memento of the turbulent times, nowadays maintained

by volunteers or changed into museums.

in 1837 by a small farmer who invented his revolutionary treatment

procedures by application of what he saw in nature and what he

had tested on himself. Surprisingly, by baths in cool water, simple

Picturesque landscape of the Beskydy Mountains

Te eastmost Czech mountain range near the border with Slovakia

invites you to spend a holiday there, especially due to the unique

character of the region. As far as the eye can see, the landscape is

hilly, the slopes of the hills are covered with woods and pastures

where friendly and vigorous Moravian Wallachians maintain the

original wooden cottages and sheep huts. When you come here,

do not hesitate to eat the local specialties: lamb stew, sheep cheese, cakes called “frgále” and – plum brandy. A symbolic ruler of the

region has always been the pagan god Radegast from whom the

local beer took its name.

Krušné Mountains landscape

Te mountains with the most eventful history became a popular

tourist destination not long ago. Over the course of time, the

mountains underwent unexpected changes. In the 16th and 17th

centuries, the mountains were very busy: the silver and tin mines

produced coins – thalers, which gave name to today’s US dollars.

Te discovery of uranium deposits resulted in involuntary work

of approximately 15,000 in particular political prisoners in the1950s who were extracting uranium intended for the Soviet

nuclear experiments near spa town of Jáchymov. Te subsequent

extensive mining for coal and the development of power plants

in the Mostecko region resulted in extensive devastation of the

forests in the 1970s and 1980s.

In spite of all the aforementioned events, surprised visitors

are welcomed by beautiful young larch and birch forests with

unfrequented forest cycle paths where you can teach your children

to ride a bike.
