Summer Day Camp @ Harding a service provided for families enrolled at Harding Academy

Note: Summer Day Camp @ Harding is open to Harding families. Policies and procedures are listed on page 14.

Participants: Sports and LEAP camps are open to the community unless otherwise indicated.

Confirmations: Automatic confirmations are generated once your camp registration is entered into the online database. No other confirmations may be issued.

Cancellations: Camps with insufficient enrollment are subject to cancellation with a full refund. Notification of cancellation will be made prior to the beginning of the camp.

Conduct: Students are to be neatly dressed in modest apparel and are expected to adhere to the policies of Harding Academy. We reserve the right to dismiss from the program (without refund) any student whose behavior becomes uncooperative.

Attendance: No refunds will be given for students who choose not to attend camp.

General Policies: Harding students enrolled in Summer Day Camp will be taken to and from SPORTS CAMPS and LEAP CAMPS by Harding staff. Otherwise, childcare is not provided before or after LEAP CAMPS or SPORTS CAMPS. Parents should sign in and pick up students at the scheduled times. Late fees will apply.

Online Registration: www.hardinglions.org/summer. Payments may be made online by MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and eChecks. All camp registrations will be maintained online and each account will have a separate login. If you have taken camps or classes in the past, you should have an account. If you cannot remember your login information, call 767-5344 for assistance. Please note: Forms may still be downloaded and printed.

Week of May 29 - June 1 Strength and Conditioning Camp Location: Harding Cherry Road campus Ellers Gym Instructor: Gray Yates, assistant football coach, 312-3843 Date: 5/29 - 6/1 (TU - F) Time: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Grades: 5 - 8 Cost: $90 Come unlock your hidden potential as you spend 4 days learning the secrets of training. The path to being your best only comes through hard work and we will do that all week! We will take one day each to learn about speed, agility, and strength work outs. The best part is that all the things we learn do not require a gym! So for the rest of the summer you will be able to work out on your own. All you need for this camp is a pair of sneakers, a desire to get better, and a willingness to work hard. The final day we will compete against other campers, but more importantly, we will compete against ourselves! (includes a camp t-shirt.)

Prepare to do your best on your college entrance exam with an instructor that has helped hundreds of students improve their scores. We will review content and learn strategies for improving your scores on all sections of the test. In addition to the 8 hours of class time, students should expect to spend an additional hour to an hour and a half on outside assignments each class day. Students will need a copy of the new edition of The Real ACT Prep Guide for use in the class and to complete assignments. *This book is available at local bookstores or may be purchased from the instructor for $20.

Football Camp Location: Harding Cherry Road Campus Instructors: Harding Academy Varsity Coaching Staff & Players, 767-4466 Date: 6/4 - 6/6 (M - W) Time: 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Grades: 3 - 8 Cost: $90 Equipment Needed: NO PADS, just shorts, a t-shirt, tennis shoes, and football cleats

If you are a young man entering grades 3 - 8 and you are considering playing football, you don’t want to miss these three exciting days. Harding Academy football is at an all-time high, and we are looking for great young men to carry on the tradition we are building. These three days will be filled with hands-on training from varsity staff and select varsity players. There will be many position-specific skills taught and several exciting skills competitions. It doesn’t matter if you have been playing organized football for several years or if you have never worn shoulder pads - this camp will challenge you and make you a better player. Don’t miss out on this awesome opportunity! (includes a camp t-shirt)

Quarterbacks and skill positions will spend 4 afternoons with the Harding Academy football coaching staff as they teach and refine the fundamental skills used in these positions. These are the skills used to have a top 5 offense in the city of Memphis this past season and led to a DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP! Come prepare yourself to carry on the tradition. Join the Former Golden Girl of the University of Memphis and 2-time World Champion, April Glisson, for Baton Twirling camp! Baton twirling can begin a lifelong investment in your daughter. It’s an empowering and character building experience as the girls learn challenging and fun baton handling skills, as well as some basic dance and gymnastics. Note: April has batons for sale - $25 new or you can borrow one at no cost. Please notify the instructor in advance.

Dino Dig Location: Harding Cordova campus Instructor: Computer Explorers Date: 6/4 - 6/8 (M - F) Time: 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Grades: SK - 2 Cost: $108 Beginning paleontologists learn about dinosaurs and the techniques used in extracting fossils in this hands-on class. Go on your own fossil dig, analyze and assemble skeleton pieces, produce a fossil reconstruction, create a mural, and take home a movie documentary of your discoveries!

Jane’s Art Studio: Beach Watercolors Location: Harding Cordova campus Instructor: Jane Mitchell-Hassan Date: 6/4 - 6/8 (M - F) Time: 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Grades: 3 - 7 Cost: $105 (includes $25 supply fee)

Learn different techniques in watercolor painting as we explore the beach scenes. We will paint a still life using items from the ocean and a few of the living creatures from the sea. We will definitely have a painting worth framing when we finish!

Jane’s Jr. Art Studio: Beach Watercolors Location: Harding Cordova campus Instructor: Jane Mitchell-Hassan Date: 6/4 - 6/8 (M - F) Time: 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Grades: SK - 2 Cost: $105 (includes $25 supply fee) Learn the correct way to use watercolors and brushes as we paint sea creatures, shells, and a few other surprises we might find at the beach. Explore the art of mixing colors and making new ones! Students will receive a watercolor kit to continue painting at home. Let your child explore his interest in piano by learning the basics in a fun group setting. Each child will learn fun songs to play as well as learn theory with games and contests! On Friday, students will celebrate and perform for each other to gain exposure of a recital setting. After completion of this class, private lessons are available on campus where students can continue to build on what they have learned. Ignite your inner inventor with SparkFun! This course of interactive electronics will let you experiment with embedded systems, physical computing and programming. You’ll be introduced to the world of transistors, resistors and other circuit concepts necessary to make LEDs blink, motors spin, and music play, all using an Arduino board connected to your computer. The E-Sewing Kit lets you add LEDs to create wearable art. It’s time to ignite the world of physical computing! (includes a $30 supply fee for the light kit to take home) Babysitter Training with Infant/Child CPR & First Aid Location: Harding Cordova campus Instructor: The American Red Cross Date: 6/5 - 6/7 (TU - TH) Time: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Grades: 6 - 9 Cost: $125

Be the best babysitter in the neighborhood! This fun and interactive course includes two sections. The first two days cover babysitter leadership, safety, and basic care skills, plus marketing and interviewing techniques. The third day covers Infant/Child CPR. This course teaches participants how to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in infants and children up to 12 years of age.

This camp is designed to teach the athlete competitive and fundamental drills such as passing, shooting, defending, and triple threat. This camp is a must for the developing player to the experienced athlete. (includes a camp t-shirt, basketball, and awards)

Basketball: Competition and Drills (SK-2) Location: Harding Cordova Elementary Gym Instructor: Kevin Starks, varsity boys coach, 767-4466 Date: 6/11 - 6/13 (M - W) Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Grades: SK - 2 Cost: $110 This camp is designed to teach the younger player proper techniques in shooting, dribbling, passing, and triple threat. Travel back in the Magic Tree House with Jack and Annie to Florence, Italy, during the time of the Renaissance - a time when every new morning brought with it the promise of artistic and scientific wonder. In Monday with a Mad Genius, they meet none other than Leonardo da Vinci! Their mission is to find the second of four secrets of happiness. The camp will engage the student in reading activities, role play, crafts, and lots of other hands-on activities! Each student will take home a copy of the book at the end of the week.

Red Hot Robots Location: Harding Cordova campus Instructor: Mad Science of the Mid-South Date: 6/11 - 6/15 (M - F) Time: 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Grades: 2 - 7 Cost: $175

Join us for a week of fun with amazing robots! In this week of half-days, learn about the uses of robots in our world and spend time experimenting with super cool, red hot robots! Experiment with sound sensing robots, line-tracking robots, and amphibious robots. Discover the science of circuits and how robots use sensors to explore things around them. Use your skills to build your very own working robot to take home with you!!

This camp is all about hands-on technology. Does your child love the computer, iPad, your cell phone, etc.? In this camp, your child will work with different types of technology each day: touch screens and apps, graphic tablets with stylus pens, laptops, mouse skills, digital microscopes, and more!

NEW! Four-day Basketball Fundamentals & Skills Camp Location: Harding Cherry Road campus Instructor: Kevin Starks, varsity boys coach 767-4466 Date: 6/18 - 6/21 (M - TH) Time: 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Grades: 6 - 9 Cost: $160

If you want to play on a Harding basketball team next year, you need to attend this camp so you can learn the Harding basketball system. Bring a lunch each day of camp. A basketball will be provided for each camper. Wear comfortable shorts, t-shirt, and tennis shoes.

3-D Video Game Animation Location: Harding Cordova campus Instructor: Computer Explorers Date: 6/18 - 6/22 (M - F) Time: 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Grades: 3 - 7 Cost: $148

Using innovative 3-D programming software you’ll design animation for an interactive game, movie, or story. This object-oriented program is fun and challenging as you discover the worlds of computer science and programming by using 3-D graphics in a virtual world. Let your imagination soar! If you can dream up a concept, you can design it!

Become a lab scientist-in-training in this whirlwind program and explore the chemistry of everyday life! Learn to recognize chemical reactions and mix up a few reactive ingredients for some explosive results! Discover amazing things that come to light and glow in the dark. Stick it to the walls and push the power of tape to the limits in an adhesive hour on things that cling! Campers will also enter the Slime Olympics. Crazy Chemworks is bubbling over with crazy concoctions and cool experiments to WOW your Mad Scientists!

When school is out Drama is IN! We offer weeklong programs that run on a half-day schedule. Campers deliver an exciting performance for families and friends at the end of the week. Students will spend the week working on speech, dramatic movement, improvisation, snippets and scripted scenes. Campers will also have an opportunity to write and produce their own mini-script. They will have the opportunity to build their confidence, speaking abilities and stage presence throughout the week! The difference is DRAMATIC!

Gymnastics Location: Harding Cordova campus Instructor: Up-Off Gymnastics Date: 6/18 - 6/22 (M - F) Time: 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Grades: SK - 2 Cost: $90

Learn the basics of gymnastics for the beginner and intermediate levels. Students will work on a balance beam, tumbling mat, and mini bar. They will practice rolls, headstands, cartwheels, backbends, and more. Students will receive medals on the last day of class.

Oil Pastels are a vibrant and colorful way to express our creativity. We will work with different techniques including a painting method with baby oil. Learn about some of the great masters including Picasso, Kandinsky, Kahlo, and Dali. Copy masterpieces of choice and present an art gallery the last day of class. We will get a little messy so make sure you dress appropriately for class and bring a big t-shirt for a cover-up. Take pictures of yourself in front of ancient ruins using a green screen, explore the world of exotic bugs under the microscope, listen and identify the sounds of rainforest creatures, and experiment with software, iPad apps and BeeBot robots to learn about the importance of the rainforest. Grab your safari hat and backpack for a world of fun! It’s a jungle out there!

Adobe Photoshop Location: Harding Cordova campus Instructor: Computer Explorers Date: 6/25 - 6/29 (M - F) Time: 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Grades: 3 - 8 Cost: $148 Students will transform their own digital images into unique works of art as they explore advanced graphic arts tools. As their skills grow and their imaginations soar, so will their excitement for the projects they will be able to create. These skills will begin a life-long adventure in the digital arts! Jane’s Art Studio: Clay Location: Harding Cordova campus Instructor: Jane Mitchell-Hassan Date: 6/25 - 6/29 (M - F) Time: 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Grades: 3 - 8 Cost: $130 (includes $25 supply fee)

We will learn about pottery from the past and the different techniques that were used. We will make a pinch pot, coil pot, and free form pot. We will also carve a self-portrait at the end of the week! Clay is messy, so be prepared to get dirty!

Children hear the term 3-D all the time, yet they usually cannot explain it. This class will help them understand spatial relations through Dimension and Scale. Students will use LEGO blocks to build and accessorize houses in two different scales. The course also covers reflection, symmetry, and rotation as well as proper building techniques such as staggering and stacking.

COME LEARN CHESS! Whether your child has never touched a chess piece or can defeat all challengers, Harding Academy welcomes you to a chess camp for learning and achievement. Mid-South Chess instructors are college students trained by Grandmaster Alexander Stipunsky and Memphian/Rhodes College graduate, International Master Jake Kleiman. Each instructor is hand selected for skill, competence and experience in coaching chess. Campers are divided according to ability. Campers will receive a daily souvenir plus a medal and certificate on the last day. Your camper will have LOADS of fun while being educated in the game of chess.
