  • 4Summer is all about fun for our youngest campers, so our camps are designed with learning while playing in mind. All of the academic camps on these pages are taught by Steward Lower School faculty members, and the camps that focus on motor and speaking skills are taught by a kindergarten teacher who specializes in occupational therapy-based services. The minimum age for these camps is four.

  • 5Afternoon AdventuresAfternoon Adventures is the perfect way to extend your camp day. Every Monday afternoon is spent at Steward with a variety of entertaining visitors, and field trips are taken to local places every Tuesday through Friday. This camp can be done separately or as part of an entire Summer Experience day. Field trips and guest entertainers in recent years have included: Go-kart racing Laser tag Movies at the IMAX theatre Jumpology Color Me Mine Miniature golf Jonathan Austin Ironbridge Sports Park Bowling

    Kindergarten Discovery CampHeres a fun way for children entering Stewards kindergarten class to learn about school in a play-oriented environment. The activities will help students feel comfortable in a new setting while being introduced to the routines of kindergarten. Children will explore campus, meet new classmates, and interact with faculty. This camp serves as a great way to welcome your child into The Steward School community.

    Lets Do LunchLunch supervision is provided between 12-1 p.m. in the Dining Commons for campers who would like to extend a morning camp or join us before an afternoon camp. Students should bring bagged lunches every day, and they will be escorted to and from their camps and lunch.

    Little BookwormsReady to read? The focus of this camp will be on learning language arts skills specifically related to the process of readingconcepts of print, vocabulary, and writing; associating letters with sounds; and blending letter sounds to form words and sentences. Campers will explore rich literature and writing through centers, individual and small group instruction, exploration of books, and play to help with reading readiness.

    Rock, Scissors, PaperThe focus of this busy two-week program is to strengthen visual, fine motor, and general school-readiness skills. A wide variety of multimedia activities and interactive play will be incorporated daily for children who are entering kindergarten or first grade in the fall. The program is staffed by a learning specialist/kindergarten teacher and is limited to ten students. If your child is not currently a Steward student, the director of the Center for the Advancement of Learning, Charlene Wilton, can help(continued on next page)

    Scribbles and WigglesThis camp will focus on strengthening the rising junior kindergartners fine and gross motor skills, incorporating music, movement, and multisensory activities using a variety of materials. This is a process-oriented class that will promote essential school readiness skills including cutting, gluing, tracing shapes, and much more. This camp is limited to eight campers.

    Spanish FiestaJoin us for Spanish camp to explore the Spanish-speaking world! Students will be able to learn and practice Spanish in a fun and immersive environment through singing songs and playing authentic games from the Hispanic world. With fun crafts and Spanish food, campers will be feliz about spending a week in this international environment.

    SpartaCare: AfternoonsDo you need childcare in the late afternoons? The SpartaCare program is available for campers who participate in Steward camps that last until 4 p.m. each day. During the weeks campers are registered for SpartaCare, supervision will be provided until 5:30 p.m. Steward staff members will pick up campers from classes and escort them to SpartaCare.

    TennisStewards tennis coach offers two great tennis options during the summer. For a complete week of instruction, register for Tennis Camp, whether you are new to the game or have been playing for years. If you only have a few days to spare, sign up for Mini-Tennis, a shortened version (Monday-Wednesday) of the week-long camp designed to reinforce skills and allow students to have fun playing against other campers. Both camps serve as a great introduction to tennis for beginners or as further development for those who already have some experience under their belts.

  • What better way is there for elementary-aged kids to explore new worlds, try unique activities, and make friends than to attend an awesome summer camp? All of our academic and sports camps are taught by Steward faculty members and coaches. We host guest instructors for several arts and innovation camps, including Virginia Fishing Adventures, Edible Education, Young Rembrandts, and Bricks 4 Kidz.

    All SportsDoes your young athlete love sportsany and all sports? We have half-day and full-day sports camp options for 2016.

    Half-Day Program (on-campus)In the on-campus morning program, campers will enjoy an action-packed week of touch football, soccer, street hockey, dodgeball, and other favorites. Each day will have sessions in two or more different sports with an emphasis on sportsmanship and teamwork. Fundamentals will be reviewed and reinforced each day during game time, followed by prizes, popsicles, and the popular downhill water slide on the hottest days! Please bring a healthy snack and water bottle each day.

    Grades: 2-8 (Players will be grouped by age, size, and ability.) Dates/Time: June 13-17, July 11-15, July 25-29; 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

    Full-Day Program (off-campus)The full-day sports camp will take place at K&L Sports in nearby Montpelier with transportation provided to and from Steward each day. K&L Sports promotes sportsmanship and camaraderie while increasing athletic skill level, using a 6-to-1 student-to-pro ratio. Each week, the activities include tennis, basketball, baseball, beach volleyball, horseshoes, swimming, football, soccer, wiffle ball, dodgeball, kickball, frisbee, hiking, and other field and team games. The full-day camp includes a K&L Sports t-shirt, Friday pizza party, and lots of daily prizes.

    Arts and CraftsSummertime means summer crafts! Campers will create several projects, including gifts and decorations with summer themesthe perfect activities to do inside on hot days. Projects in previous years have included sand art, pipe-cleaner critters, and decorated buckets and shovels. Campers will also have opportunities to express themselves by creating their own projects from the crafty table. The camp will culminate on Friday with an art display and reception for parents.

  • 9BaseballStewards baseball camp is focused on fundamentals and skill development with an exciting game each day. A staff that includes 2014 state championship players will give each camper individualized attention and drills for continued improvement at home. The daily routine will include work on throwing, fielding, and hitting skills, followed by the opportunity to apply new and improved skills in the daily game. Please bring a healthy snack and water bottle each day.

    Grades: 1-7 (Players will be grouped by age, size, and ability.) Date/Time: June 20-24; 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Cost: $185

    Boys LacrosseA staff that includes current and former NCAA lacrosse players will teach a range of fundamental skills in a fun, competitive atmosphere with daily games and contests on the field. This popular camp differentiates itself by providing a low player-to-coach ratio in order to dedicate greater attention to every child. Points of emphasis will include correct techniques for ground balls, throwing, catching, shooting, fast breaks, unsettled offense/defense, transition, and face-offs. Campers should bring their own equipment, including stick, helmet, gloves, shoulder pads, elbow pads, cleats, and mouth guard.     Bricks 4 Kidz: A Galaxy Far Away Star Wars/Space CampJoin us on an adventuresome journey through space! Build the Redstone Rocket to blast through the atmosphere into a realm that is truly out of this world. Travel back in time to build NASAs Gemini Capsule. Trust your astronaut building skills to pilot a spacecraft that will bring you back to earth safely. Well build motorized LEGO models that represent spacecraft from your favorite space movie. Come experience this stellar journey to a galaxy far awaymay the Brick be with you!

    Bricks 4 Kidz: Jurassic Brick LandDinosaurs on the LooseAre you ready for the adventure of a lifetime? Put on your hiking boots and camouflage...youre about to enter Jurassic Brick Land LEGO style! Campers will build a world that comes to life with gentle Brontosaurus, ferocious Velociraptor, terrifying T. Rex, and more. Well learn about the amazing dinosaurs that lived during the Jurassic period and other extinct, prehistoric animals that roamed the earth and swam the seas during that era. Show us your building skills using our specialized project kits with LEGO bricks!

    Bricks 4 Kidz: Worlds of AmusementWorlds of Amusement Camp will take campers on a thrilling adventure to build amusement park-themed models. Spend time visiting Wizard World by building your favorite wizard and his magical owl. Build and give your despicable yellow movie characters a thrilling roller coaster ride. Get your amusement park ticket stamped as you turn games, food, rides, and attractions into exciting motorized LEGO model builds. All of this and more awaits at the Worlds of Amusement Camp!

    CheerleadingDo you have spirit? Lets hear it! Catch the spirit of cheerleading as you join The Steward School cheerleaders and coaches for a week of fun. Campers will not only learn cheers and dances, but will also work on the fundamentals of cheerleading, including basic motions, jumps, and stunts with an emphasis on safety. Campers will showcase what they learn when they perform a mini-routine for parents and guests at weeks end. Please bring a healthy snack and water bottle each day.

    Field HockeyBeginners and experienced players alike are welcome at this camp where the Steward field hockey coaches will help with the fundamentals, including stick work, rules, and basic knowledge of the game.     Fishing Camps with Virginia Fishing Adventures A week with Virginia Fishing Adventures offers campers the opportunity to learn beginner and intermediate tactics for freshwater fishing in nearby private ponds and rivers. We have access to some excellent private waters where campers are assured success. Our camper-to-counselor ratio is 4-to-1 to allow for personal instructional time each day. Campers may also earn their fishing merit badges through this program. Safety is our number one priority, so campers will wear life jackets when in the water or on boats. Virginia Fishing Adventures provides all bait and tackle, rods and reels, life jackets, and good times. No experience necessary.

    Germany in JuneNEW! Take a virtual tour through Germany with a bilingual guide who will introduce students to the language, culture, media, crafts, events, food, and almost every aspect of German life. Every day of the camp will include a variety of activities that highlight the Land der Dichter und Denker, and the week will conclude with a simple performance(continued on next page)

    Girls LacrosseThis exciting camp is designed to bring together female lacrosse players from various schools and backgrounds to enhance skills and reinforce the concepts of lacrosse. The lessons will target the fundamentals, as well as challenge intermediate and advanced level players in the areas of stick work, dodging, shooting, defensive positioning, and draw controls. The coaching staff includes Stewards varsity girls lacrosse coaches and other current and former NCAA athletes. Campers should bring their own equipment: stick, goggles, cleats, and mouth guard.     Glass Fusion and ClayLets fuse some fun! This two-week camp integrates two types of media to encourage each participants creativity. Campers will first learn hand-building skills and clay-work techniques, then use these new skills to incorporate glass into their masterpieces. Fusing glass is an exciting process that everyone will enjoy.

    Jewelry During this camp, students will learn how to create beautiful, handmade jewelry. In this intensive beading class, campers will learn jewelry-making techniques and complete at least three projects, including a set of earrings, a bracelet, and a necklace using pearls, crystals, and glass beads. After the camp ends, students will have supplies to continue making jewelry. Campers must be able to tie knots in thread to participate. Previous students are welcomethey can always learn something new!

    Kids Night OutNEW! Drop the kids off for a night of fun! Well have a cookout at school, where the campers will play games with members of our own Spartan varsity baseball team. At 6:30 p.m., well board the Steward bus to attend a Richmond Squirrels game. Campers will be escorted by Steward staff the entire evening, and seats will be together at the stadium. The night includes a t-shirt, dinner, and a ticket to the game. Parents should pick up campers on the Steward campus between 9:15-9:30 p.m.

    Dates/Time: June 17, August 19; 5:30-9:30 p.m.

    Lets Put on a Show!This camp explores acting and creative dramatics and culminates in a live theatre presentation. Creative dramatics integrates storytelling, presentation, and character creation as a platform for learning. Campers will experience the entire process of production while developing skills in movement, creating characters, learning the vocabulary of theatre, exploring vocal production, articulation, accents and dialects, performing pantomimes, and exploring the theatre facility itself.

    Math Brains at WorkThis camp is filled with games and activities that will engage every childs math brain! Whether your child struggles or soars with math, this camp is differentiated for various levels. The best way to learn and practice math is by using concrete materials, manipulatives, and real-life situations, and a fun, effective way to do this is through playing math games. At the end of the week, each camper will take home a folder full of learning games and manipulatives to continue building math confidence.

    Grades: 1-2

    Date/Time: August 1-5; 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

    Math/Science BridgeSummer is not a time for your child to forget everything learned during the school year! Let them have fun and bridge the gap between May and September. During this two-week camp, students will review, refresh, and enrich math skills by emphasizing basic operations, decimal/fraction relationships, and word problems. Science activities will focus on the five steps of the scientific method in solving problems and conducting experiments. Students will also engage in hands-on activities that combine science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) principles in exciting experiments. They will use basic, everyday materials to design solutions for challenges and will have opportunities to visit the Bryan Innovation Lab.

    Grades: 5-6

    Date/Time: July 18-29; 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

    Mini-TennisThis session is a shortened version of the regular week-long tennis camp designed to reinforce skills and to have fun playing against other campers. This mini-camp is a great introduction to tennis for beginners or further development for those who already have some experience under their belts.     Open a BakeryNEW! Does your child dream of cookies, cakes, and pies? This is a fun baking class where he or she will practice math, science, and baking skills with the best of the summer harvest.     Rock, Scissors, PaperThe focus of this busy two-week program is to strengthen visual, fine motor, and general school-readiness skills. A wide variety of multimedia activities and interactive play will be incorporated daily for children who are entering kindergarten or first grade in the fall.     Science of CookingThe chefs of Edible Education will show campers that using math and science can equal fun in the kitchen. The concept of measurement helps with math skills, and the reactions between various ingredients and how heat affects foods both involve chemical processes to teach the why behind recipes. From the science of breads to the science of pickling, students will have a delicious time discovering how delicious science can be in the kitchen.

    Soccer Boys and girls will score a great summer experience by attending the popular Steward Soccer Camp! They will learn all the important skills of the game such as passing, shooting, heading, trapping, and possession play. Camp will begin each day with a skill of the day, followed by technical training (fundamentals or skill games), and finally team play.

    Spanish FiestaJoin us for Spanish camp to explore the Spanish-speaking world! Students will be able to learn and practice Spanish in a fun and immersive environment through singing songs and playing authentic games from the Hispanic world. With fun crafts and Spanish food, campers will be feliz about spending a week in this international environment.

    SpartaCare: AfternoonsDo you need childcare in the late afternoons? The SpartaCare program is available for campers who participate in a Steward camp that lasts until 4 p.m. each day. During the weeks campers are registered for SpartaCare, supervision will be provided until 5:30 p.m. Steward staff members will pick up campers from classes and escort them to SpartaCare.

    Step Up to SuccessThis two-week math and language camp will help ease your childs transition from second to third or third to fourth grade. This camp will present students with the math and language arts concepts that will help them become better readers, writers, and mathematical thinkers for the new school year. The curriculum includes the practice of math facts through games, manipulatives, and critical thinking and problem solving in the context of childrens engineering, cooking, and science experiments. Reading comprehension skills will be introduced through nonfiction topics and award-winning literature. Proofreading and editing will be practiced in conjunction with writing activities.

    Stewards Outstanding Summer (SOS) CampNEW! Spend the first week of August doing a little bit of everything!     Urban Homesteading Camp NEW! Step into a time machine and visit an era that will introduce you to old world skills and new experiences. At Urban Homesteading Camp, students will be immersed in the basicsnatural skin care, gardening, baking on an open hearth, spinning yarn and knitting, candle making, and much more.

    Era-appropriate costumes will be provided so that campers feel like part of a bygone time. In addition to learning about homesteading skills from yesteryear, they will also take home handmade items, including a simple doll and an original fiber arts creation. Campers will explore the processes of fabric and food production as they were done before the age of factories and shopping malls. Students should bring a bagged lunch and snack each day. This camp requires a significant amount of high-quality supplies, all of which are provided.

    VolleyballOpen to all experience levels, this camp will focus on the basics of volleyball, including passing, setting, hitting, and serving. The camp staff will also feature coaches from VCUs Division I volleyball team. Instruction will include basic fundamental techniques and team building, and game play at the end of each day will give players a chance to put their new skills to use.     Wonderful WordsThis exciting program is designed to immerse children in focused reading and writing activities. This two-week camp addresses the literacy needs of children at all levels of ability. Highlights of the camp will include opportunities to read books, recipes, craft directions, and poems; reading instruction designed to build decoding skills, fluency, comprehension, and an understanding of how to choose appropriate reading material (just right books); writing instruction focused on the quality of storytelling and the mechanics of writing; and daily word work to build skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, and handwriting. This camp specializes in individual, small-group, and whole-group instruction with a low teacher-to-child ratio.

Campers will also have opportunities to express themselves by creating their own projects from the crafty table. The camp will culminate on Friday with an art display and reception for parents.

    BaseballStewards baseball camp is focused on fundamentals and skill development with an exciting game each day. Points of emphasis will include correct techniques for ground balls, throwing, catching, shooting, fast breaks, unsettled offense/defense, transition, and face-offs.     Community Service SamplerNEW! Part of being a good steward in the community is contributing to projects that help others. Each morning, the Steward bus will depart campus with a team of young volunteers and Steward faculty who will spend the day putting themselves to work in a meaningful way. Campers should bring bagged lunches from home. Hours can be applied to school-required community service credit.     Glass Fusion and ClayLets fuse some fun! This two-week camp integrates two types of media to encourage each participants creativity. Campers will first learn hand-building skills and clay-work techniques, then use these new skills to incorporate glass into their masterpieces. Fusing glass is an exciting process that everyone will enjoy.

    Jewelry During this camp, students will learn how to create beautiful, handmade jewelry. In this intensive beading class, campers will learn jewelry-making techniques and complete at least three projects, including a set of earrings, a bracelet, and a necklace using pearls, crystals, and glass beads. After the camp ends, students will have supplies to continue making jewelry. Campers must be able to tie knots in thread to participate.     Kids Night OutNEW! Drop the kids off for a night of fun! Well have a cookout at school, where the campers will play games with members of our own Spartan varsity baseball team. At 6:30 p.m., well board the Steward bus to attend a Richmond Squirrels game. Campers will be escorted by Steward staff the entire evening, and seats will be together at the stadium. The night includes a t-shirt, dinner, and a ticket to the game. Parents should pick up campers on the Steward campus between 9:15-9:30 p.m.

    Math/Science BridgeSummer is not a time for your child to forget everything learned during the school year! Let them have fun and bridge the gap between May and September. During this two-week camp, students will review, refresh, and enrich math skills by emphasizing basic operations, decimal/fraction relationships, and word problems. Science activities will focus on the five steps of the scientific method in solving problems and conducting experiments. Students will also engage in hands-on activities that combine science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) principles in exciting experiments. They will use basic, everyday materials to design solutions for challenges and will have opportunities to visit the Bryan Innovation Lab.

    Middle School Language ArtsWords in MotionWords in Motion is designed specifically for Middle School students of all interests and abilities. The primary objective of this interdisciplinary camp is to take away the intimidation of the English classroom by replacing those sentiments with joyful experiences. We will spend the week doing hands-on activities related to reading and writing, including Readers Theater, word games, publishing a camp newspaper, and more! This camp is strongly recommended for students who need help finding structured time for reading (to help with summer assignments) and for those new to Steward.

    Middle School Math and SpanishNEW! Take advantage of this week to freshen up your students math and/or Spanish skills before the school year begins. These classes can be taken separately or combined for a full day.

    MathRegardless of what level math class your child is entering, we have a math camp that will suit his or her needsone class will focus on general math, and another will be geared toward students who are entering Pre-Algebra and Algebra I. This camp will also allow Steward students to cross several of the math requirements off their summer to-do lists. Rising eighth-grade students who will be taking Algebra II in the fall might also benefit from the Algebra Refresher camp on page 27.

    SpanishSpanish will be offered in the afternoons to help students who want to brush up on their language skills in order to feel more comfortable before school starts. The lessons will be appropriate for all levels of introductory Spanish and will incorporate games, food, and fun cultural activities. Rising eighth-grade students are also invited to take the Exploratory Spanish campsee page 21 for details.

    Shakespearian TheatreNEW! Those who want to challenge their acting abilities can be students of Shakespeare for a week with Bard Unbound. This camp will get students on their feet, acting in abbreviated versions of Shakespeare plays or a collection of scenes. Campers will perform exercises that help with focus, quick thinking, creativity, and working together. Each play includes the characters, language, and skeleton of the plot, with enough narration to explain the action, which adds a Monty Python edge to the whole piece. Performances are done in Elizabethan style: lights remain on, characters interact with the audience, a prompter is on hand to help with forgotten lines, and students sit around the edge of the stage.

    Soccer Boys and girls will score a great summer experience by attending the popular Steward Soccer Camp! They will learn all the important skills of the game such as passing, shooting, heading, trapping, and possession play. This camp is led by Stewards varsity soccer coach, EJ Watkins, a former college player who has coached all ages and skill levels. Camp will begin each day with a skill of the day, followed by technical training (fundamentals or skill games), and finally team play.

    SpartaCare: AfternoonsDo you need childcare in the late afternoons? The SpartaCare program is available for campers who participate in a Steward camp that lasts until 4 p.m. each day. During the weeks campers are registered for SpartaCare, supervision will be provided until 5:30 p.m. Steward staff members will pick up campers from classes and escort them to SpartaCare.

    Spartan Counselor Apprentices NEW! Current Steward students are invited to apply for the new Spartan Counselor Apprentice (SCA) program. Learning to be helpful stewards is an important component of the early teen years, and this program is a fantastic way for students in rising grades 7-10 to take leadership roles during the summer. They will work with a variety of teachers and

    students each week, leading younger groups around campus and assisting instructors with lessons. Every afternoon, the apprentices will escort the younger campers on field trips to local entertainment spots such as the bowling alley, laser tag, and Jumpology (venues are subject to change).

    Interested students should submit applications and will take part in short interviews as part of the selection process. The application includes a place for parents to mark the weeks their students are available during the summer. This camp includes a minimal cost since students will take part in afternoon field trips. Students who need to submit volunteer hours for school can apply their working time from this experience. Limited spaces will be available each week, and SCA registration will open after April 22.

    Urban Homesteading Camp NEW! Step into a time machine to visit an era that will introduce you to old world skills and new experiences. In this camp, students will be immersed in the basicsnatural skin care, gardening, baking on an open hearth, spinning yarn and knitting, candle making, and much more. Era-appropriate costumes will be provided for use during camp, and students will take home handmade items, including a simple doll and an original fiber arts creation. Campers will explore the processes of fabric and food

    production as they were done before the age of factories and shopping malls. Campers should bring a bagged lunch and snack each day. This camp requires high-quality materials, all of which are provided.

Points of emphasis will include correct techniques for ground balls, throwing, catching, shooting, fast breaks, unsettled offense/defense, transition, and face-offs.     Community Service SamplerNEW! Part of being a good steward in the community is contributing to projects that help others. In partnership with HandsOn Greater Richmond, this week of service will consist of time spent with multiple organizations that make a significant impact on many lives. Each morning, the Steward bus will depart campus with a team of young volunteers and Steward faculty who will spend the day putting themselves to work in a meaningful way. Campers should bring bagged lunches from home. Hours can be applied to school-required community service credit. Three well-established professional photographers will guide you through a one-day, hands-on workshop as a crash course on everything you need to know to take a great picture. The day will conclude with a gallery reception of photos from the workshop.     Bob Foley Next Level BasketballNext Level Basketball camp is designed to teach all aspects of the game.     Chess CampUSA Chess is offering a fun and entertaining chess camp at The Steward School. USA Chess is the largest and premier chess camp organizer for children in the United States. Registration options include mornings, afternoons, and all-day sessions. Campers experience instruction and play in a fun environment designed to improve skills, whether they are interested in casual or competitive chess. Tuition includes a trophy, chess set, and more.

    Kudo Video Game CreationGo-Kart StyleChildren will create something similar to a Mario Kart style game. Campers begin by designing their own worlds with mountains, valleys, lakes, and hills, where they will place characters and program them to move, talk, and use scripts. Campers can program characters to pick up objects, engage opponents, and overcome villains. Whether it is collecting diamonds before time expires, navigating through an obstacle course, or racing against a friend, campers are sure to have fun!

    Modding, Networking, and Hosting with Minecraft NEW! Minecraft is hugely popular because its collaborative, open-ended, and moddable. Our camp begins with learning the game, controls, recipes, and a bit about hosting and networking. Campers will be connected to different worlds hosted on the secure server and will be able to experiment with character skins, mods, and custom maps. By the third day, the kids are building in the Active Learning world that grows over time. Whether adding a room, building a moat, or creating a chessboard, the possibilities are nearly limitless.
