Gods comforting, maternal words to those returningto Jerusalem. (Isaiah)Salvation through the cross is everything. (GalatianThe 72 disciples are sent to preach about the king-dom. (Luke)

    In todays gospel, Jesus

has empowered and sent h72 followers out to proclaimthe good news.

Think of all the catechistsserving in parishes today. The challenge is great, butso is the need. In some parof our world, being a cate-

chist or a lay minister of the word is dangerous business. The 1968 Latin American bishops meeting inMedellin, Colombia, sent forth the word that God haa special love for the poor. As this message spreadmany catechists took their lives into their hands toteach it. They must have taken comfort in the wordsof a prayer by Bishop Ken Untener: We are workernot master builders; ministers, not messiahs. We arprophets of a future not our own.

Moses teaches us to be faithful to Gods command-ments. (Deuteronomy)Pauls cosmic hymn to Christ. (Colossians)The Good Samaritan. (Luke)

The story of the generosityof the Good Samaritan is areal challenge for most of us.Living our lives here on Earthis a full-time job, specially ifwe are thinking about

heaven. We may feel that wedont have the time, energyor money to help strangers,

even though the commandments teach us to loveour neighbour as we love ourselves. But if we skiphelping our neighbour, we might actually be pass-ing God by.

The joke goes like this. When a derelict showedup in church one Sunday morning in rumpled, dirtyclothes, he was clearly outof-place, and everyoneavoided him. At the end of the service, the pastor

took the man aside, scolded him gently and sug-gested that he ask God the proper way to dresswhen coming to church. I did, the man said, butGod said he didnt know because hed never beenhere before. -Dc Dick Folger

Abraham and Sarahs guests. (Genesis)Paul shares in Christs own suffering. (Colossians)Mary and Martha welcome Jesus. (Luke)

There is a quality of sacredin many of our kitchens. Noth-ing compares to Moms green-bean casserole or pecan pie.In todays gospel, Martha ispreparing her wonderful gift to

Jesus. It isgoing to be a wonderful meal,

and Martha alone can takepride in creating it.

Mary is providing her wonderful gift to Jesus. Sheis being the good listener, allowing Jesus to talk.Martha gets jealous when their conversation burstsinto laughter and evinces deeper understanding.Mary and Jesus are clearly having a good time.Martha is stuck in the kitchen.

Each of us has gifts to offer. We cannot be allthings to all people. Ours is to do what we can. Weare each called to bring our gift, whatever it may be,and let it shine before God. -Dc Dick Folger

    Teach Me To Pray

Abraham negotiates with God. (Genesis)We have been brought to life with Christ.(Colossians)Jesus teachings about persistent prayer. (Luke)

T.S. Eliot once wrote:Only those who will risk go-ing too far can possibly findout how far one can go.

Todays first reading andgospel are about persis-tence --about Gods invita-tion to keep on asking forhis help. We are called toprayer. Luke says: For

everyone who asks receives, and everyone whosearches finds, and for everyone who knocks, thedoor will be opened.

Prudence is different from caution. Sometimes weshould keep trying even when the risk is great. Pru-dence will tell us when persistence is the right deci-sion. Abraham showed almost brazen persistencein arguing with God over the fate of the two doomedcities. But compassion was his objective, and, ashe discovered, Gods compassion is limitless
