Future Tense 

The immediate future and the future tense

Use the present tense of the verb aller (to go) followed by an infinitive (e.g. finir) to express future plans. This is called the immediate future.

The present tense forms of aller are: je vais, tu vas, il / elle va, nous allons, vous allez, ils / elles vont.

Je vais finir mes études. I am going to finish my studies.

Il va se marier. He is going to get married.

Note that with reflexive verbs, the reflexive pronoun (me, te, se, nous, vous) has to match the subject.

Je vais me marier.

The future tense is used to say that something will happen.

Its endings are -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont.

The stem of the verb in the future tense is the infinitive for -er and -ir verbs.

Il adoptera un enfant. He will adopt a child.

For -re verbs, it is the infinitive without the final -e: j’attendrai (I will wait).

There are no irregular endings of the future tense. There are however irregular stems, e.g. j’aurai (I will have), je serai (I will be), j’irai (I will go), je ferai (I will do). Learn some common irregular stems in the future tense – see the ‘Grammaire’ end section of of the Student Book.

Read these three reports.

Caderousse est un petit village très propre. Il n’y pas de papiers par terre parce qu’un employé de la mairie est payé pour faire ce travail. Il y a beaucoup de poubelles dans les rues et il y a aussi un centre de recyclage à l’extérieur du village.

La Grande Motte est une petite ville au bord de la mer. Elle est très jolie mais en été, il y a beaucoup de touristes qui viennent y passer une semaine ou deux. On voit alors beaucoup de déchets dans les rues et on a l’impression que la ville est sale.

Montpellier est une grande ville et la circulation est interdite à tous les véhicules dans le centre. Il y a un système de tramways pour amener les gens au centre. C’est une ville très propre. Les poubelles publiques sont vidées tous les jours et le centre est nettoyé tous les matins par une équipe d’employés de la mairie.
