DOGS……DOGS…DOGS…..DOGS…DOGS Of all the subjects that crop up in the newsletter, „Dogs‟ must be the most frequent. We have had complaints of dog-bags being left in the hedgerows, dogs running in the Playing Field and on the other hand dog owners asking for somewhere to exercise and train their animals. This letter is the latest received on the subject. Dear Sir, Everyone seems to comment on the mess dogs make, but no one mentions the noise they make! In a peaceful area like this it is very irritating to have to put up with dogs being left outside with doors shut on them, barking all day (and through the night), so much so that it becomes unpleasant to sit in your own garden. As a dog owner myself I can see it is the owner at fault, not the dogs. Are they deaf? I certainly don’t let my dogs annoy the neighbours. Telling the dog to go to bed every time it barks – and keeping this up - it soon gets the message. Let’s hope for a quiet summer – guess there’s always the dog warden. AND………another request from the Point Mills area, drawing attention to the amount of dog mess on the cycle trail, especially nearing Bissoe Bridge. The cycle trail is seen by some dog owners as a place to let them off the lead, and not always pick up any mess.

Advertising Again, we have attracted several new advertisers. If you’re local, and offer a local service, it’s surprising how the jobs come in. Please support them. Deadline The next issue should go out in mid-September, so the latest for any articles will be Monday 5th September.

Elderflower Cordial An easy to make drink that can be frozen in plastic bottles, leaving room for expansion, so it can be enjoyed all year round. It will keep for almost a month if just bottled, although is best to drink within 2 weeks. To ensure no mould, it is better that you freeze elderflower cordial and it can be enjoyed as a christmas drink. Ingredients 20 elderflower heads 1 sliced lemon 2 tsp of citric acid (ask at your chemist) 1.5 kg (3.5 lbs) of sugar 1.2 ltr (2.5 pints) boiling water Method Boil a kettle for the water. Fill a bowl or small bucket with all the other ingredients. Pour the water over the other ingredients and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Skin the surface of the water to get rid of the scum that can arise. Cover with a cloth. Stir twice a day for five days. Strain though a fine sieve though a fine sieve or through muslin cloth and decant into sterile screw topped bottles. Refrigerate. As with other cordials dilute with 5 parts water to serve. Experiment with it and add it to some of your favourite spirits. It is really nice as a gin mixer.

Report on Gwennap Music Festival Gwennap Music Festival was held on Saturday, 21st May at Gwennap Parish Church, a superb acoustic venue for a showcase of local musical talent. Almost forty people took part, and the Church was full of their supporters and friends. Mr Neil Shepherd, Director of Music at St Ives Parish Church, Mr Philip Davey, Organist at Truro Methodist Church and Mrs.Pat Mitchinson, formerly working with the BBC Education department formed a distinguished panel to give written comments, pointers and encouragement to the performers, many of whom were children. We heard choral and solo singing in the morning, including two singer song-writers accompanying themselves on guitar. In the afternoon there were piano, flute, violin, recorders and brass instruments- soloists and groups. There was a prize for the best overall entry on the day - which had to be split between two outstanding performers: Hannah Atkins singing “How beautiful are the feet” from Handel‟s Messiah, and seven year old Siana Rouse playing the Skye Boat Song on her cornet. New Business opens at Point Mills.

A new Hairdressing Salon, catering for ladies, gents and children, has opened at Point Mills. Local „boy‟, James Barry Datson, who has been in hairdressing for over 25 years, most recently at Falmouth, has opened his Salon in the west wing of the Garage premises of LJ Richards & Sons. James‟s family has lived in the Point Mills area for generations. Towards the end of the year he will start building his own property just 150 metres from the Salon. He would like to see the local community thriving again, and hopes that his “retro-style” salon encourages others. The Salon offers cutting, colouring and keratin permanent blow-dry. Alongside James is Lee, who has moved across from lecturing on hairdressing at Cornwall College, and two assistants, Lisa and Janine. Janine Knibb (nee Hocking) is a local Frogpool girl. Opening Hours are Tuesday – Saturday 9 – 5.30pm - (7pm on Thursdays and 3pm on Saturdays).

Elderflower Champagne (Similar to elderflower presse) Ingredients 8 litres (2 gallons) water 1.25 kg (2.5 lbs/5 cups) sugar 8 large elderflower heads 4 Lemons 4 tablespoons mild white wine vinegar Method Boil the water and pour of the sugar to dissolve it. Cool and add the elderflowers, juice of the two lemons, slices of the other two and the vinegar. Cover with a cloth and leave for a day. Strain with a fine sieve or muslin cloth, squeezing the flowers as you do to release more flavour. Store in screw top bottles. It will be ready in about 10 days to a fortnight and should be drunk within a month.

A “Good News” story!! Amid the doom and gloom of current news headlines, here‟s something that might make you smile. Emma Pill runs a successful horse competition yard at Pulla Cross. One of her horses, 4-Year old „Babs‟, had the misfortune to lose an eye when six months old, catching a stray foot of another horse. Back in January, during a terrific overnight electric storm, Babs and her stablemate „J-Lo‟ were struck by lightening in a local field. The next morning, Emma found them both in a serious condition. J-Lo didn‟t survive and Babs wasn‟t expected to. For several days, and many Vets visits, her life was in the balance, made worse because she was in foal. Miraculously, as you can see from the photo, she pulled through and produced her lovely foal on 24th May. This photo was taken (by Cllr.Phil Roscorla) only 15 hours after he was born.

CROFTHANDY VILLAGE HALL Our Village Hall provided a first class venue for the recent polling with ample parking for all. It was particularly appreciated by the polling officers who spent a very long day in pleasant surroundings. As summer approaches the Village Hall committee are busy fund raising once again. We have a brand new hall with great facilities. Unfortunately our funds ran out before our energy efficient green heating system could be finished. The temporary heating we used last winter proved to be very expensive, so it is on the agenda to get our heat source pump funded as soon as possible. By the time you all read this we will have already held two fund raising events, a barbecue and a motorcycle show. As the year progresses we have flower shows, vintage stationary engines and more in the planning stages. I thank all those who have supported us this far in any way and hope that you will have the opportunity to make good use of the new hall. We hope to see you all in the near future, as usual contacts are, Booking Julie on 01209 822577 Enquiries Steve 01209 822153

School News 12

CUSGARNE COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL Maintenance work now completed, new fencing erected at a good height to prevent balls escaping, a new gate for safer access, windows replaced and, at long, long last a LEVEL (well almost) playground. Three runners took part in the Cross Country County Finals. Dorothy 11th Rosalind 12th and Hannah S 15th-all very pleasing results. The “Cooking Live” competition at Richard Lander Community College involved Hannah F, Hannah S and Zoe. They had to prepare menus and cook dishes in 90 minutes. The judges praised their well –balanced menus. A daunting, but enjoyable experience. The school entered the Recorder classes at Truro Music Festival with fantastic results. The Ensemble was awarded a first place with Distinction. In the trios Imogen, Rosalind and Chloe W were commended and Hannah S, Chloe L and Madeleine were placed first with Distinction. The girls in non-competitive solos were commended. In the trophy class Imogen came first with a distinction, Rosalind was commended and in the duets Rosalind and Imogen were pipped into second place by one mark! Chloe L and Madelaine , and Hannah S with Chloe W were all commended. In early April, an Indian Dance workshop took place in each class. Anthony Fagin visited Class 2 and talked about wild life showing photos too. The school has been awarded Healthy Schools Plus which gives status and recognises the work done and the achievement of pupils Pupils organised a Comic Relief event and raised £54 34. The end of term performance was another big hit! Based on the Elements, all the children in each class portrayed their element in song, dance words. Members of the school attended Gwennap Church on the Sunday before Easter reading poems and prayers about animals as part of the Family service. To celebrate the Royal Wedding a Street Party was held in the field. Class 3 organised Games stalls, everyone wore red, white and blue and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The school participated in the Gwennap Music Festival, some as individuals some as part of Recorder Groups. All performed very well and their behaviour was exemplary. Big Wheely Day in May again a huge success. Classes 3 and 4 Split and rode in both directions from Bissoe to a predetermined point and back. Years 1, 2, and Reception rode in the playground and took part in special classroom activities. Cusgarne Community School is increasing in numbers and is very much part of the community. It has a warm, happy, creative atmosphere. Visitors are very welcome!

BURGLARY !!

A third of burglars enter through an open door or window - remember to close and lock your windows when you go out. Opportunist thieves commit the majority of burglaries. They choose premises that have no obvious signs of security or where they think they will not be seen. Did you know? A third of burglars enter premises through an open door or window. Properties without security measures in place are ten times more likely to be burgled than those with simple security measures such as window locks and quality door locks. Typical stolen items are laptops, purses, money, mobile phones, jewellery, TV‟s, ipods, electrical equipment, credit cards and car keys. Many opportunist burglars enter the house by putting their hand inside a cat flap or letter box, taking the key out from the inside of the door and then letting themselves in. "We would like to thank our sponsors LTC and Tim & Jane from the Cornish Arms who have made us extremely welcome after a game and throughout the season. Also our supporters - “especially Frank and Carol Andrews and Tom”, said Nick Mallaber, Chairman. Chairman’s Overview and Parish Council News. Projects for the betterment of the Parish - There is a temptation when times are hard to simply maintain what we have in the Parish but the Parish Council wants to progress. We would like you to think about potential projects to make the Parish a better place to live. These will need to be relatively cheap but if you can think of anything then drop us a line. In any case we need to support what we have so I commend to you the GRAND SUMMER FETE – please go along and enjoy yourselves I am sure it will be an absolute hoot! POTHOLES! To report a pothole directly to Cornwall Council, ring 1300 1234 222 It seems we have lost our argument to retain the phone kiosk at Pulla Cross. BT is now asking whether the Parish Council wants to buy the kiosk for £1. The problem with this is the ongoing maintenance and repair costs, and unless anyone can come up with a unique idea for its future use, we will tell BT to remove it after it has been disconnected. The Parish Council is now back up to full strength of Seven Councillors. Their details are on the Parish website and will be printed in the next Newsletter.

Gwennap Horticultural Society - Trip to RHS Rosemoor 26 May 2011 Gwennap Horticultural Society has one all-day outing every year, and this year we had decided to visit the RHS Garden Rosemoor, Great Torrington, Devon. For many of us it was not the first visit, but another chance to visit this magnificent place, perhaps at a different season, was not to be missed. There are now 65 acres of enchanting garden, and woodlands, with all year-round interest. For experienced gardeners, and complete beginners, and for many of us in between on the knowledge scale, this wonderful place cannot but inspire. We spread out during the day and individually marvelled at what we saw. There are sixteen different areas to explore, all offering varying styles of gardening. For instance what perfection in the shrub-rose garden. The design, the choice of roses and their placing with the intermingling of clematis, and the gorgeous scent was quite overwhelming. I was looking for such a rose, tall with dark red single flowers, one for each end of a hot border, to mingle with ginger lilies, orange crocosmias, scarlet dahlias and lobelia tupa. There were several so decisions were not easy, but in the end I found an absolute beauty... We stopped and admired the Stream Garden and Rock Gully where the planting seemed so perfectly chosen amongst the damp and shady areas. These marginal plants were magnificent together with the sound of trickling and bubbling water intermingling with birdsong. All so perfect. I had spied a glorious fern spreading out beside a stream and discovered later it was available in the shop, and of course it was completely irresistible! It so often happens that plants admired in these much-visited gardens are not available to buy, but in this instance I struck gold. The restaurant provided delicious food and a pleasant break with friends before continuing the amazing horticultural journey to Lady Anne's garden, the vegetable garden and the lake before our time ran out. On to more technical gardening methods now. It would appear that the use of mycorrhizal fungi to enhance the root-growth of trees, shrubs and perennials is common practice in this RHS garden and presumably the others. The resulting strong growth and vigour is plain for all to see. The vegetable garden showed such perfection and as they do not use any slug-death in any form, there had to be another deterrent. So nematodes are applied to areas to be planted before anything else, and they would probably repeat this once again during the season. To see row upon row of such perfect brassicas completely blemish-free was quite extraordinary. It occurs to me these advances in horticultural practices need further investigation, and it would certainly be an interesting subject for a winter lecture. After our customary raffle, which is so necessary to boost the funds of the Society we settled back into our brand-new and very comfortable coach with all our plants carefully stored in the space below, and home we went.- Beautifully driven - bursting with ideas for our gardens having had a wonderful and most inspirational day. And lastly if anyone who gardens might be interested in joining our friendly and welcoming Society, whether an experienced or a novice gardener please get in touch with our Secretary Susan McCrossan on 01872 870320 and she will be very pleased to hear from you. We have many outings to lovely gardens during the year as well as interesting and informative lectures not forgetting an annual dinner and a Christmas Party! So don't be shy...!
