What’s next?...

We eagerly anticipated and experienced the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pen-tecost, now that the Great Fifty days are past. If we recall in the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus told the disciples to remain in Jerusalem and await the power coming from on high (Acts 1). It is interesting to note that after Jesus’ ascent into heaven (forty days after Easter), the disciples remained looking up to heaven, perhaps paralyzed or fearful of what is next or where do we go from here. For many who may have graduated from college or high school these may be questions you are pondering, but where are you looking for answers? Perhaps, as the body of Christ, these are the questions we are asking – Where do we go from here?

Revisiting Acts 1, the now eleven apostles as they waited did not remain mo-tionless and forlorn for too long, but rather devoted themselves to prayer. Like the disciples, we too are challenged to listen to the voice of the angels and return to Jerusalem for the encounter and outpouring of the Holy Spirit. I believe we cannot stand still and become lost to those questions but rather commit ourselves to prayer, and discern the Holy Spirit to guide and empower us for the work of ministry.

The season of Pentecost is depicted by green. During summer, crops are grow-ing, and there is the hope for a bounty. Similarly, this is the season of growth for the church. I invite us during the days of summer to deeply reflect and pray, asking the Triune God to order our steps, guide us as individuals, and to discern what's next for the community of St. Peter’s Rosedale.

As we honor the belief of an eternal God: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, let us continue to strengthen our faith through prayer, spiritual worship and fellowship. Following this path, the members of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church is embarking on a journey to renew and strengthen St. Peter’s for its 110th Anniversary through an $110,000 endowment fund. This fund will ensure that St. Peter’s is here for another 110 years providing services to members of the community. This issue of the Key will provide additional information about our endowment fund as well as highlight upcoming events for our 110th An-niversary. You will also read about the improvements being made to St. Peter’s, new ministries and our pa-rishioner spotlight. It is our hope that you will be able to attend our upcom-ing events and support the growth of St. Peter’s Church. Have a blessed summer. Coordinators/EditorsLatoya LeeDonalee ThomasPatti Rookwood

P.S. Due to a relocaton, Latoya's role as editor will be limited. Donalee and Patti will carry on the reigns as coordinator and editor of the Key newsletter.

Allow me to share a glimpse of the next year, as we celebrate the 110th anniver-sary of the founding of St. Peter’s. Follow-ing the legacy of Mrs. George Perzed, the Women’s Guild, and the Rock Club among others, whose hope was borne from the need to have a house of worship in Rose-dale, we will trust in our faith, pray and discern where God is leading. We were endowed with a building over 110 years ago and now it is our job to pass this vision forward and create an endowment for the next 110 years. As 21st century witnesses, we are challenged to confront our discon-nect with the geographical parish in which we reside. How do we bridge the gap? How do we reconnect? What’s next?

We cannot stand like the disciples looking up or longing for the church of the past, hoping to reclaim the glory days. We need to continue growing in faith, encountering the Triune God through our work in the community and being agents of reconcili-ation, justice, mercy, kindness, compas-sion and love. I invite and encourage you, my sisters and brothers, over this season of growth to pray and discern where is God calling and inviting us to participate in God’s mission. How would that look? What would it entail? What’s next? It is my hope we can have listening sessions and conversations in the coming year to discern our common life together as St. Peter’s continues on it's mission to light a path in the community of Rosedale.

I bid you a Spirit filled Pentecost season and a restful and rejuvenating summer.

Your Brother and friend in Christ

Other events and activities to look out for in 2017 include the Annual Summer Festival (7/15/17), International Homecoming (9/16/17), Spe-cial All Souls Day Service, honoring the memory of deceased members (11/2/17) and our Annual Dinner Dance (11/17/17) including a Red-Carpet Photo session.

We will also have monthly trivia questions on St. Peter’s history during our fellowship hour to sharpen your knowledge of St. Peter’s. In 2018 look out for the special 110th Anniversary themed Tea Party (4/21/18), Mother’s Day Brunch (5/13/18) and Father’s Day Brunch (6/17/18) in ad-dition to our St. Peter’s Got Talent Show (6/2/18). There will be a special St. Peter’s Day service on Friday, June 29, 2018 in recognition of St. Peter’s present parishioners, for the reconfirmation of faith and renewal of bap-tismal covenant, and a special trip to wrap up the celebration.

To mark this 110th year milestone we will have memorabilia for purchase and a special 110th Anniversary Journal available at our Fall Dinner Dance. The year-long celebration will culminate with a 110th Anniver-sary Commemorative Journal that will include highlights of events and photos of the celebration throughout the year.

As the 110th Anniversary theme indicates, “Lighting The Path In Our Community”, our focus is to sustain St. Peter’s service to our community for many years to come and in order to do this proceeds from the 110th Anniversary events will be used towards establishing our endowment fund.n

June 4th 2017

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,On Thursday, June 29 2017 St. Peter’s Episcopal Church celebrates its 110th year Anniversary. As we continue “lighting the path of our community,” I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to you for your contribution to St. Peter’s over the years. We have seen the growth at St. Peter’s in the new Ministries that are being offered, but there is still work to be done. By being the beloved sons and daughters of God and by becoming the beloved community that God intends us to be, we can transform this troubled world into God’s vineyard. To do this, we must continue to be passionate in our baptismal covenant as we continue to respond to God’s call to be agents of peace.

In 1907, when the thirty-five worshippers came together in a home and started St. Peter’s Church, Rosedale, the result of their vision and hard work is what we are enjoying today. What are we doing to build on that legacy? What will be the legacy of the congregation of 2017? It is incumbent on us to build on the foundation laid by the thirty-five worshippers so that we may continue on for another 110 years and more. To realize this, we at St. Peter’s are putting in place an Endowment Fund to fund future Ministries and also to ensure the continuation of current Ministries. To achieve this, I am asking each adult member to contribute $110 and children under 18 years old to contribute $11 towards this fund. This can be in the form of a one-time contribution or in installments.

If you are a member of a Ministry, continue to engage and work for the Lord, if you’re not, please discern which Ministry can utilize your gifts and skills so we can continue to build up the beloved community of God here in Rosedale and also in the larger community. It is my fervent prayer that you will join me in this effort and share of your time, talent and treasure as we embark upon this our 110th year under the theme “Lighting The Path In Our Community.

Please make sure to get involved and be a part of the festivities planned for the year. May God continue to bless you as a beloved child of God.

Yours in Christ,

The Rev. Steve L. FosterRector

Most of us as Christians have given to the church.

It’s a blessing to be able to contribute to the

work of the Lord. Are we cheerful givers? Do

we write our check with the right attitude? Do we write it

first? Is it looked upon as an expense, a bill to pay, rather

than a privilege to give thanks? God doesn’t need our

money. God could get money anyway God chooses. Yet

God gives us the opportunity to partner as we engage and

participate in God’s mission. When we pay our pledges or

put money in the plate and do it begrudgingly, it’s like giv-

ing a gift to someone that we would rather not give. It was

given under compulsion, not freely. A gift shows our ap-

preciation for the person. It conveys we value them highly.

If it is a chore for us to give there is something wrong with

our hearts. We have forgotten to whom our money rightly

belongs. Money doesn’t belong to us. Like every thing else,

it‘s a loan. We should joyfully give it back! n

“Charge them to do good, to be rich in good works

and generous, sharing what they have.”

Building and Proper ty Corner

During the past year and a half the commit-

tee has accomplished many enhancements:

(1) power-washed and plastered the church's

exterior walls; (2) painted the main entry;

(3) cleaned the gutters; (4) installed security cameras

around the Church and Rectory; (5) beautify outside

of the church with flowers and miniature pine trees; (6)

replaced two red doors with security locks at the Church’s

side entrance; (7) installed a new roof on the rectory and a

new bathroom.

Although we have accomplished a lot in the past year,

there are still many items that need to be addressed such

as: a welcome sign, handicap accessibility, expansion of

the building, and new office space, kitchen, bathrooms

and sewer system to prevent flooding.

I am thankful to the committee members of the prop-

erty committee for their unwavering support; committee

members include: Adolphus Cameron, Arthur McKen-

zie, Bruce Joseph, Father Foster, Graham Elcock, Hux-

ley Smith, Lewis Thomas, Norman Newman, Pearson

Griffith, Richard Connell and Willett LaFleur. n

The goal of the Property Committee is to survey

the Church and the Rectory for any issues and also to enhance the properties. The issues are then brought to the

vestry to be discussed.

The Legal Eagles of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church was established by parishioners, Pam Jackman Brown and her sister Gail Adams. After joining St. Peter's

Episcopal Church of Rosedale in 2015 they immediately began brainstorming ways in which their services could be utilized within the church community. They approached other church members in the legal field who endorsed their vision and with the support of others the duo submitted a proposal to Father Foster to start this new ministry.

Legal Eagles is co-chaired by Jennie Weekes and Marlene Probherbs. The group’s mission is to provide legal educa-tion as it applies to life, health, financial and family mat-ters to parishioners and the surrounding communities of St. Peter’s. In the short amount of time that has elapsed since their inception, Legal Eagles has sponsored forums on wills, trusts and estates, guardianship, power of attor-ney, health care proxies, and tax preparation. In addition, they have even brought in the services of a legal Mobile

Van! The feedback from church members so far has been positive; with members stating that the services provided are valuable and beneficial. Upcoming events from Legal Eagles include the breast cancer screening van on Septem-ber 17th and know your rights with the Fire Department and NYPD.

The group envisions a collaborative approach, teaming up with other church missions so that together they can accomplish more and on a much larger scale. Legal Eagles hope is to reach more people by reaching out to the sur-rounding communities. To further this goal, the commit-tee is encouraging other members of the church to join the mission, especially young adult members of the com-munity. The aim is to foster a more diverse, passionate, and cohesive group that can ultimately address both legal and non-legal issues. With the motto of “Spill the infor-mation” so that everyone can “Sip the tea of knowledge” Legal Eagles is well on its way to making an impact on our community. n

Did you ever wonder what the symbols around the pulpit represent. Many of us may not know they represent the Twelve Disciples.

This edition we will start by focusing on Peter. Peter’s emblem shows an upside down cross and two crossed keys which symbolize the confes-sion of faith upon which the Christian Church is founded. The inverted cross symbolizes his cru-cifixion, Peter requested that his head might be where his master’s feet were nailed to the cross, as he was not worthy to be crucified in the same manner as Jesus.

Jesus said, “I will give you the keys to the king-dom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Mat-thew 16:19). Whoever possesses this same faith which St. Peter voiced so clearly and firmly has the keys to enter into the kingdom. n

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10.

Daphne Watson Shields affectionately known as “Peggy” was born in Jamaica on De-cember 17, 1933. She embodied the above verse written by the apostle St. Peter. In 1966 Daphne migrated to the United States of America, and attended Long Is-land University where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Banking and Finance and

was employed with the Bank of Trust for 23 years. Later she accepted a teaching position at Queens Community Early Childhood Center in Rosedale where she worked until retirement.
