Post President's Message:Busy Summer for the DC Post

SAME Middle Atlantic Region 2 SAME Washington DC Post

A special thanks to the Tournament Chairman, James Peck, and Tournament Coordinators, such as Anita Ruth from MBP, who helped make this another great event. We look forward to having a great tournament again next year!

The SAME DC Post and ACEC/MW held their annual Joint Conference on June 17th at the Army Navy Club. This year the program focused on regional program trends in government facilities and transportation construction.

Frank Palermo and Thom Ennen from GSA discussed the St. Elizabeths West Campus Redevelopment Program, specifically focusing on the US Coast Guard Headquarters Facility and providing additional details on architectural art.

The second panel focused on the Beltway HOT lanes and Virginia’s PPP Program. Representatives included Jackie Cromwell and Jay Loftus from the Virginia Office of Transportation PPP and Nicholas Barr from Transurban USA. All attendees earned 3 PDHs. Thank you to conference sponsors Alpha Corporation, AMT, Baker, Schnabel, and SKANKSA.

The SAME DC Post gathered on April 24th at Carmine’s for our annual Federal Budget Overview luncheon program. Mr. David Sienicki from U.S. Congress House Armed Services Committee provided an update on military budget and various installation issues such as global basing, military construction, and base operating services. The SAME Washington DC Post

Scholarship Golf Tournament took place on May 7th at the South Course of Andrews Air Force Base. Approximately 70 golfers came out to support the Post’s Scholarship Program while enjoying a day outdoors and networking with colleagues. Thank you to everyone who participated and our generous sponsors - approximately $7,000 was raised for the Post Scholarship fund. Every year the DC Post is able to award 12 outstanding engineering and architecture students $3,000 scholarships to support their education.

USA Science & Engineering Festival The SAME DC Post participated in the 3rd USA Science & Engineering Festival Expo, hosted by founding and presenting sponsor Lockheed Martin, on April 26 and 27 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, the Festival was a free, family-friendly expo that allowed kids and adults to participate in more than 3,000 hands-on activities and see more than 150 stage performances. Mike Rowe gave a keynote address surrounding skilled trades and STEM and the two time Grammy winning band “They Might Be Giants” performed. As a supporter of STEM initiatives engaging young minds, SAME National and the DC Post sponsored a booth at the festival. With over 35 volunteers throughout the weekend we were able to show and tell kids of all ages about Hydrogen Fuel Cell Cars! Fuel cells are a promising means of producing energy in the future. Some fuel cells, such as this one we used, do not consume fossil fuels and therefore are considered environmentally friendly. Automobile manufacturers are already experimenting

successfully with this technology and it is widely believed that fuel cells will power automobile and many electronic devices, including laptops and cell phones, in the near future. The cars were simple but the kids really enjoyed them. We added water and watch as it separated the water into hydrogen and oxygen. Then, that stored gases was used to power both vehicles across the floor.

Many thanks go to our volunteers who ensured SAME was well represented and communicated the mission of our Society to this very large audience. The DC Post would also like to thank our YM Chair, Corinn Bovi, and our Programs Chair, for their exceptional planning efforts for the booth.

On June 24 representatives from Manhattan Construction led Young Members on a free tour of the Dahlgren Chapel at Georgetown University. Manhattan completed the structural restoration and interior renovation of the historic chapel which was originally constructed in 1893. Attendees even got to peek inside the two-story organ and visit the crypt. Afterwards the group headed to P.J. Clarke’s for networking.

In July the Andrews Field Chapter led a group of 20 SAME Community Outreach Engineering camp attendees through the P-8000 Ambulatory Care Center and Dental Clinic construction site. The $220 million project will provide improved medical support to thousands of military members and their families. LTJG Andy Stitt, US Navy Civil Engineer Corps, led the tour.

The Post’s July 24th lunch program at the Army Navy Club featured William Tully, Project Manager from the USACE Baltimore District Capital Area Office. Mr. Tully gave an overview of the District’s MILCON Program including cumulative spending program trends. He also discussed upcoming contracting opportunities and small business goals for FY14.
