I will always remember 2014 as the year that zoomed by and also the year that I had one of the greatest honors of my life – to serve as your Post President. I’ll wait to recount all the year’s accomplishments until my State of the Post message at the Awards Luncheon on 22 January, but I will say here, as well as there, that the absolute best thing about our Post is the PEOPLE. Professional, personable, responsive, and responsible come to mind when I think about our Board of Directors and all the members that support the various committees and events. It’s rare in a volunteer organization that every individual who raises their hand to serve is absolutely “all in” and committed to excellence. Suffice it to say the Post is blessed with huge talent.

This fall has been a busy time for the Post. The Annual Scholarship Dinner on 17 September was extremely well attended. We presented 12 Scholarships for a total of $36,000 to students attending schools from across the region. We also had the great luck to have retired Army Brigadier General Joe Schroedel, SAME National’s new Executive Director as our key note speaker. On October 23rd the SAME DC Post co-hosted an educational workshop with CMAA NCC for attendees to earn 1.5 PDHs. Over 50 attendees gathered to learn about developing winning proposals. Richard A. Belle, IOM, CAE shared his professional “secrets” about the proposal process and how to transform a “good” proposal into a winning proposal. He covered strategy, branding, client understanding, and competitor differentiation.

The SAME DC Post and CMAA NCC co-hosted a luncheon following the proposal workshop on October 23rd to learn about the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) building and construction program. Tony Clifford, NIH Chief Engineer, Office of Research Facilities Development and Operations, discussed NIH’s history, current facilities, and their strategic plan for maintaining, improving, and expanding these facilities.

The SAME DC Post’s August 21st program featured Stephen A. Cauffman of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Mr. Cauffman discussed how NIST is conducting a program to address the disaster resilience of communities, with a focus on buildings and infrastructure systems. He explained to attendees that the program addresses resilience at the community scale, accounting for the interdependencies that exist among buildings and infrastructure systems and the social systems that they support.

Chris Park also gave a candid presentation regarding his experience at the US Marine Corps Construction Camp. He was one of three students sponsored by the DC Post to attend SAME Engineering & Construction camps.

DBIA and the SAME DC Post joined up for our annual kayaking excursion with Team River Runner (TRR) on August 31st. TRR is an organization focused on providing our wounded and disabled veterans adaptive paddling programs. Volunteers had the opportunity to kayak with TRR veterans followed by lunch. Learn more about TRR on their website: www.teamriverrunner.
