Clare Balding opens Radiotherapy Unit

Clare Balding OBE unveils a plaque to commemorate the

official opening of the new Radiotherapy Unit

This is an exciting time for our charity and for Basingstoke Hospital. Thanks to the determination and generosity shown by so many of you, we reached our Pinpoint Appeal target of £450,000 just as 2013 drew to a close. The Radiotherapy Planning CT scanner funded by the Appeal has been installed in the new Radiotherapy Unit, which was officially opened by Clare Balding OBE on 13th May.

We are immensely grateful to everyone who supported our Pinpoint Appeal and I extend my warmest thanks on behalf of our trustees and the hospital. By helping to fund the latest technology you are making a huge difference to the treatment and care of many patients and their families.

As you will read in this newsletter, providing leading-edge equipment is an essential element in helping the hospital attract consultants and medical staff with new expertise and skills. We are now raising funds for equipment in three different clinical areas. With your continued support, we will together help keep our hospital at the forefront of patient care.

Update

New technology needed to stay aheadWe want to ensure that patients at Basingstoke hospital will be treated and cared for by consultants and medical staff using the latest methods and technology.

New skills and expertise in Respiratory MedicineEndobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) - Enabling rapid lung cancer diagnosis and treatment. £130,000 needed.Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in the UK; around 43,500 people are diagnosed each year. EBUS is an innovative endoscopic examination which is done as a day case and is now considered an essential procedure in determining the extent of lung cancer. However this equipment is not available at the hospital. A lung cancer tumour can double in size in 4-5 weeks. With waiting times of up to 4 weeks in centres further away, rapid access to the EBUS and clinicians with the necessary skills would improve the speed of diagnosing and treating lung cancer. This would make a radical difference by reducing the wait for many anxious patients and their families.

A high level of care in Maternity ServicesTwo mobile telemetry devices – Assisting women at risk of complications during labour. £10,000 needed. With over 4,000 women a year receiving antenatal, postnatal and labour care at our maternity unit, approximately 40% have complexities requiring additional foetal monitoring. Without the ability to remain mobile they may be at greater risk of intervention. These monitors will increase the number of straightforward deliveries, especially for women with diabetes, a disability, those who are severely overweight or who have previously had a caesarean section. They will even be able to use the water birth facilities. The monitors will also make the whole experience better for the birth parent.

“Using this wireless technology will mean our midwives can offer a much more mobile labour to approximately 1,000 women a year, so everyone will benefit, not least the babies born on our ward every day.” Margaret Beattie

“We recently recruited Rahul from the London Chest Hospital. He is very experienced in this area of diagnosis, so we will be able to use his skills and expertise to the full with the EBUS and carry out 80-100 procedures annually.” Mr Salah Matti

New technology needed to stay ahead

Your help is invaluable – please act now! There are so many ways that you can help us to raise funds

• You can set yourself a personal challenge that doesn’t require a physical effort (see Carlie Cohen’s challenge on back page) and set up your own fundraising page in aid of the Medical Fund on Virgin Money Giving. Whatever your challenge – or your fundraising target – every £ will help. www.virginmoneygiving.com

• Sign up online to Easy Fundraising or Give as you Live and select us as your chosen cause, so every time you shop online through your favourite stores, they’ll donate a percentage to the Medical Fund. These are very secure sites and it only takes a few moments to register. www.giveasyoulive.com www.easyfundraising.org.uk

• Donate your clothes online - through a free home collection service, Clothes for Charity. Just register on their website, select us from their charity database, request a bag and they will post one out to you to fill. You can arrange a collection time (and place) to suit you. www.clothesforcharity.org.uk

Please get involved or make a donation today using the enclosed form.

Specialist treatment in Pelvic Floor ServicesHigh resolution diagnostic technology – To improve treatment of patients with severe digestive disorders. £9,000 needed. With more and more people living longer, many elderly patients currently suffer in silence and are largely house-bound due to severe incontinence and other painful digestive conditions including jaundice, pancreatitis and constant reflux. Without this technology in place long journeys are involved, which can be impossible for some patients.

£14,000 will enable the Pelvic Floor Services to upgrade existing equipment with new technology so that up to 100 patients a year can be diagnosed and treated at Basingstoke.

A local resident has already donated £5,000 towards this equipment.

“This equipment enables quicker diagnosis for patients experiencing severe incontinence. It can also be used to carry out a complex diagnostic test on the upper part of the body and digestive system. This test can be followed up immediately with treatment to prevent patients suffering from almost constant reflux.” Mr Venkatasubramaniam Consultant Colorectal Surgeon

Major donors to our Pinpoint Appeal are acknowledged on the frosted glass panels in the patient waiting area. The window design was created by Ocki Magill. Local company Premier Signs of Basingstoke kindly donated the installation.

Clare Balding opens new Radiotherapy Unit

Following the incredible fundraising efforts and donations from supporters of our Pinpoint Appeal, on 13th May over 150 guests joined Clare Balding for the official opening and tour of the amazing new facilities.

We were delighted when the popular sports presenter agreed to open the unit. Clare, who is originally from Kingsclere, told guests she had been a regular visitor to the Emergency Department of the hospital in the early days of her riding career! She was joined by her family, who supported our appeal right from the launch in November 2012.

200 Club members and major donors to the Pinpoint Appeal were our special guests at the opening. “It is wonderful to be here and feel we are a part of such a fantastic effort to provide the very best for our hospital”, commented a 200 Club member.

During her tour Clare was very impressed by the Radiotherapy Services staff who will play such an important role in the future of cancer treatment.

Commenting on the new unit Clare said: “People in Basingstoke will now have access to the best equipment and the best treatment. The whole feel of the unit is fantastic – it is a very calm and peaceful place which has been so well thought out.”

Members of the Radiotherapy Services team in the room that houses the Radiotherapy Planning CT Scanner. They will support all aspects of radiotherapy treatment and care for cancer patients.

Clare was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Lady Carolyn Warren, a Medical Fund trustee and daughter of the late Earl of Carnarvon, who founded the Medical Fund 33 years ago.

An Opportunity for Local Businesses The new Radiotherapy Unit brings an opportunity for businesses in the area to help us fund equipment. SupportAd enables companies to either post a goodwill message or advert that will be shown on our new promotional screen in the reception area.

With many thanks to Debbi Young, Creative Director at snapmarketing, for helping to launch this scheme.

Additional tour of Radiotherapy Unit Some members were unable to attend the opening and are keen to see the new facilities. We are therefore organising another tour of the Radiotherapy Unit for existing and new members in the Autumn.

If you are interested in taking part in this tour, please let us know so that we can contact you when we have the dates.

To join the 200 Club please complete and return the Standing Order form enclosed with this newsletter. We look forward very much to welcoming more members.

We are very proud of the growing membership of our 200 Club who are the backbone of our charity. The Medical Fund had no significant regular funding of any sort until the 200 Club was set up in 2012. Members help us to plan for the future by providing an annual donation of £200 through standing order.

Latest NewsWe are delighted to announce that Angus Sladen has joined our board of trustees. Angus and his family have lived in the Basingstoke area for many years and he looks forward to his role working more closely with local businesses.

Join us in the 200 Club

We are pleased that so many of our members came to the opening of the Radiotherapy Unit.

“I am thrilled that the Medical Fund has successfully raised enough to help equip the new Radiotherapy facilities. However I also know that the Fund continues to work tirelessly for more equipment. Being part of the 200 Club is a great way to help and to be involved alongside other supporters.” 200 Club member, Alison Baxter.

Having witnessed, first hand, the impact that new equipment will have on cancer treatment, some members have kindly been proactive in recruiting new members. We are immensely grateful to them. If you would like to help in this way, please contact Etta Pullinger at the Medical Fund.

How can you help?

Set yourself a personal challengeCarlie Cohen, a mum of two, runs a copywriting business from Basingstoke – CopyWorks Communications. She was determined to raise funds having lost her father to cancer in 2010. “My 10 year old daughter Amelie and I looked at different ideas. In the end we chose to have a “No chocolate challenge” for the month of February. We set up an online giving page which can be

done very easily. We were delighted to raise over £800.” This just shows how very simply you can raise funds. What could you choose to go without for a month, or even longer?!
