Merlo’s innovative and patented M CDC (Merlo Dynamic Load Control) has been awarded the PLANTWORX’s Innovation Award.

Safety remains the prime Merlo objective and the M CDC system, which is now standard across all Turbofarmer agricultural machines and is gradually being introduced across the Panoramic range, takes a totally new approach to load control.

The system identifies the weight and position of the payload, compares both to a virtual ‘load chart’ and calculates the ‘stability index’. As the stability index rises, audio/visual alarms and a final hydraulic lock act to prevent a forward overturn.

In January 2013, M CDC appeared in the Farmers Guardian HOT 50 awards and in late 2012, M CDC also won the highly acclaimed innovation award at International Show, EIMA – proving that MERLO goes beyond EN15000 requirements for safety. Merlo had a very successful few days at the PLANTWORX in May despite the challenging weather conditions. It was great to see a steady flow of visitors and dealers alike.

Merlo had two stands – one static and one demo. The demo area proved very popular with our very own driver’s challenge which highlighted the unique chassis side shift concept. The static stand proved to be the best, winning the overall static stand award from the PLANTWORX organisers.

New Staff Appointments Maurizio Ganio-Mego is pleased to announce the immediate

appointment of Ken Hamilton as Country Manager for Merlo UK. Ken

has a wealth of experience in all facets of the agricultural industry

having worked for many agricultural manufacturers and is responsible

for all commercial operations within the company. This is the second

major phase of investment by the Merlo Group to strengthen and

expand the company’s operations in the UK and Ireland.

Ken has joined the company following his recent position as Operations

Director at Farols Limited – having gained extensive retail experience

from one of the most successful dealer groups in the UK today. ‘I’m

looking forward to this exciting new challenge and working with the

successful team at Merlo UK’ says Ken. ‘Concentrating on providing

improved dealership support and adopting an aggressive marketing

plan will allow the Group to position Merlo UK at the forefront of

customer choice’ added Maurizio.

In addition to the appointment of the newly formed role, Merlo UK have

been successful in recruiting Simon Howell, who joins the company with

an impressive manufacturing background in the construction industry

having previously worked for JCB and Bobcat. Simon has joined the

UK team looking after a regional area including Ireland and will be

assisting in the development and growth of the CE business.

Merlo’s Compact P25.6 is the ideal solution for working in very restricted spaces, where the conventional telescopic handler cannot get the job done.At Merlo innovation is always a generation ahead, the concept of the compact telehandler was first invented by Merlo in 1991, when the revolutionary P20.6 was introduced. Thanks to its original design and unrivalled performance, for many years it was a standard on the industry.

CONTROL, PERFORMANCE AND SAFETyControl, Performance and Safety were the focus of the Merlo P25.6 designers, leading to a machine which is only 1.8 metres wide and less than 2 metres tall. With a capacity of up to 2.5 tonnes and a lift height of nearly 6 metres, the machine is reliable, quick and above all compact. Even with its small footprint, the machine has exactly the same cab as other Merlo telehandlers – which means plenty of space, enhanced driver comfort and the incredible Merlo visibility.

Every industrial forklift has a sideshifter and their drivers would think it odd if anyone decided to design a forklift without one. Nevertheless, the mass of telehandlers on construction sites throughout the world are lacking this essential device. It’s most likely only the Merlo driver will have this facility – and it’s one he won’t give up easily – why?

Consider two scenarios; start with unloading a truck full of lengths of steel or timber, loaded with an industrial forklift. The sideshifted load is now jammed up against the headboard. Sideshift on your telehandler means that the load weight has only to be taken by the boom and it can then be gently slid away from the headboard – inflicting minimal damage. With twelve tonne Merlo’s routinely being used to unload steel frames, this is a real saving.

Secondly, ponder the situation when using the height and reach of a 17m P40.17. With the machine levelled and the stabilisers down, the load is telescoped out and into position. However, even the most experienced of drivers can find it hard to accurately judge where the load will end up. Even if the driver misjudges by a few millimeters, it will mean retracting the boom, lifting the stabilisers and physically repositioning the machine.

Merlo’s patented integral sideshift is safer and maintains the versatility of using other attachments. The mechanism is simple – the front axle is carried on four support arms rather than bolted to the chassis. A hydraulic cylinder pulls the chassis sideways into position. A proximity switch illuminates a warning light when the axle is central.

Unless the machine is designed with a built-in sideshift – as is the case with a Merlo - an aftermarket attachment is required. Its weight and thickness reduce the payload – the very thing you don’t want to do when extending the load. An aftermarket side shifter will also reduce the versatility of the telehandler. Quite simply – another reason to choose a Merlo.

Many of the industry’s telehandler ‘concepts’ that are now the norm were invented by Merlo. One concept is Merlo’s unique chassis sideshift.

The company started trading in the mid 60’s when founder, Maurice Richards, purchased an old army barracks. Towards the end of the 70’s the company purchased their site in Doublebois and have grown from strength to strength, today supplying all types of building and roofing materials. The company is well placed to serve local builders and DIY customers alike, stocking a range of timber, building products, tools and dumpy bags of sand and aggregates.

The sand and aggregate bagging is all done on site to keep up with the busy demand using one of the newest Merlo telescopic handlers in the range. With their old loader becoming too expensive to maintain, several machines were tried to find the best replacement. The Merlo immediately impressed the operators with its high visibility unrivalled control, quiet cab and total ease of use. And as a bonus all Merlo machines have hydraulic locking of the attachments for fast changeover between the bucket and pallet forks.

Although the new P25.6 is very compact, it features a full size cab, the same as fitted to the large Merlo models, but with a capacity of 2.5 tonnes and a lift height of 6 metres it’s no compromise for loading the hopper with reach to spare.

Local dealership, Clive Barford Limited are well respected in the area for their fantastic after sales back up, which sealed the already unbeatable deal.

Richards Builders Merchants are an independent family owned business based at Doublebois near Liskeard.

Shows and ExhibitionsThe last few months have been busy with local and national shows, after a very cold Lamma, the sun shone (albeit one day!) on a very busy Cereals Event in Lincolnshire.

Cereals is still one of the UK’s leading technical arable shows and saw visitors reach 25,850. The Merlo stand was busy with interest ranging from the Compact P25.6 (featured in the product focus) to the 6 tonne capacity, 10 metre reach, Panoramic P60.10.

The Royal Highland show also featured in the Merlo event program in June, with latest figures suggesting it was busier than last year achieving over 170,500 visitors. It was great to see so many Merlo visitors, customers and dealers alike.

Merlo will also be exhibiting at the 50th Royal Welsh show at Llanelwedd, near Builth Wells during the 22nd and 25th of July, showcasing a range of our leading machines including the innovative Multifarmer, which offers the performance of a 3 tonne capacity telehandler, combined with the features of a 120hp tractor.
