Potato classes:

Potatoes should be clean, blemish-free, medium-sized, evenly matched, well-shaped with shallow eyes. They should be lightly washed and displayed on a paper plate or board 37. THE ‘MURPHY’ CHALLENGE CUP

Pea and bean classes:

Exhibit large, long, fresh, smooth pods of good colour. Peas and broad beans should be

well-filled with tender peas or beans. Runner and French beans should have no outward

signs of seeds. Exhibits should be well-matched and shown on a plate or board.

Onions, shallots and garlic classes: Roots should be neatly trimmed. Leaves trimmed and onions, garlic and shallots to have the neck tied. You should exhibit large firm, well-ripened specimens. Onions and shallots should have thin necks and unbroken skin, free from damage and disease. Onions and garlic are normally shown sat on card or wooden rings to keep them upright, or you may use a dish of sand. Shallots can be shown sitting in a dish of sand. 43. One group of onions (three bulbs).

45. One dish of garlic (three bulbs).

46. One dish of spring onions (six bulbs).

Root vegetables: Root vegetables should be carefully washed. Stalks and leaves neatly trimmed to 3inch and tied. Vegetables should be blemish-free, evenly matched and evenly coloured. Display directly on the show bench, plates are not needed.

Tomatoes: Tomatoes should be ripe, firm, blemish-free, well coloured fruits of the appropriate size, not polished and with fresh calyces (stalks). Display on paper plates or boards. 50. One dish of tomatoes (five fruits) Salads: Should be fresh, clean and evenly matched. Lettuce are normally shown with the roots left on and neatly enclosed in a plastic bag to retain freshness. Radishes are shown as a tied bunch complete with foliage.

All fruit should be ripe, however gooseberries may be shown unripe. Specimens should be well-matched, clean and blemish-free. Fruit has a natural bloom on its surface and this should be retained if possible and not washed off. Stalks and calyces should be left on and fresh. The plant foliage should be used to decorate the exhibit.

FESTIVAL OF FLOWER ARRANGING ‘Per Ardua ad Astra’ - ‘Through Adversity to the Stars’

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the RAF

- By invitation only -

The Royal Windsor Rose & Horticultural Society will invite a selection of local flower clubs to

participate in this display of their work and talent. This is non-competitive but shows each club’s love of all

aspects of flowers and design.

Each club will also be asked to create a table piece reflecting the theme to be presented to our patron, Her

Majesty The Queen. Our President, Admiral Sir James Perowne KBE, will choose the arrangement.

FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS Judge TBC

Exhibits judged in accordance with NAFAS Competitions manual, Third Edition 2015. Staged on tables approx. 30inches (76cm) deep, covered with white paper. 63. THE WINDSOR GOLDEN ROSE TROPHY Cash prizes: 1st £15, 2nd £10, 3rd £5.

‘Peace’. A green and white exhibit to be viewed from the front. Width 30inches (76cms), height optional. 64. THE ‘DOREEN DIBBS’ FLORAL CLUB SALVER Cash Prizes: 1st £10, 2nd £5, 3rd £3.

‘A Windsor Wedding’. A table centre for a wedding breakfast to be viewed all round and no more than 12inches (30cms) diameter. No accessories. 65. ‘A Sylvan Circle’ Cash prizes of £3, £2 and £1 will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

A seasonal wreath decorated in natural materials only, as a celebration of summer in a British woodland. The wreath ring can be home made or store bought and of any material (e.g. woven twigs or vine; mossed wire; floral foam), measuring no more than 12inches (30cms) in diameter. The wreath will be judged on decoration only. Please remember to attach a strong and secure hanging loop from the top of your design, with a double string of at least 20inches (50cms) in length for display.

Supplementary Rules and Definitions for Floral Arrangements:

Competitors should ensure that all drapes and backings used in their exhibits are fixed firmly.

To be awarded to the most attractive, florally decorated, Windsor and surrounding area pub (within 5

miles).

Judged by RHS Gold medal winning Garden Designer John Warland, announced within 10 days

before the show. Plants may be home grown or bought from local suppliers. Please email entries to

67. THE MARK TILLING CHALLENGE CUP

Judge Mr M Tilling

Master chocolatier, pastry chef and winner of BBC Bake Off Crème de la Crème Mark Tilling has

designed and will judge this class (not WI rules). The cup will be presented by Mark at the Summer Show.

‘Afternoon Tea for Two’

This is open to anyone who is up for a challenge. The class has been left very open, flavours of all

components are up to you, but more marks will be given for complementing flavour, balance and size.

Presentation is also key and points will be awarded for neatness and proportion. Please present the

following:

Two different pastries - your choice, two of each

One type of cake - your choice, two slices

One type of fruit scone - four in total

One pot of jam

Two different finger sandwiches - two of each (bread may be shop-bought)

THE ‘SAWDAY’ CUP

Awarded to the competitor gaining the most points in this section. Points: 1st = 4, 2nd = 3, 3rd = 2,

VHC = 1.

Competitiors are asked to place exhibited cakes in polythene bags.

A cash prize of £5 will be awarded to cup winners. Cash prizes of £3, £2 and £1 will be awarded in all other classes for 1st, 2nd

and 3rd places.

Judge Mrs P Williams 68. Six cup cakes, any recipe, decoration only to be judged. Inspired by the 100th anniversary of the RAF. 69. A Victoria Sandwich Cake

Please follow the recipe and instructions, including the size of tin, exactly.

Recipe: 150g softened butter or margarine, 150g caster sugar, 3 eggs, 150g self-raising flour,

raspberry jam to sandwich.

Method: Grease and line two 7” sandwich tins and pre heat oven to 180°C /160°C Fan / Gas mark

4. Beat together the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl until pale and creamy. Add the eggs to the

mixture, one at a time and stir until smooth. Add the flour and fold gently into the mixture. Divide

the mixture equally into the two tins and level the top before cooking for 20-25 minutes. Turn them

out onto a wire cooling rack, making sure that there are no rack marks on the top of the cake.

Sandwich with the jam, and leave the top plain.

108. THE BUSY BUTTON CREATIVE COSTUME AWARD

Judges: Busy Button

Brief: Calling artisans and enthusiastic practitioners of all creative fields to create a full creature headpiece in any chosen medium and technique.

Theme: The Green Man.

This illusive character has been represented in mythology and cultures all around the world. It is believed that he was part of common folklore in Medieval Britain. Wood and stone carvings of a man with plants growing out of his nostrils and mouth can be seen in many of our churches and cathedrals.

Assessment Criteria: No preference will be given to any particular discipline of crafts but the judges will assess the skills applied and esthetics of the headpiece in the following 3 areas:

1. Skills and craftsmanship evident in the execution of the headpiece.

2. Esthetic composition of the final headpiece.

3. Manipulation of materials.

Mandatory requirements:

The headpiece MUST cover the full face, head both front and back.

PHOTOGRAPHY - For amateurs only - Entries in photographic classes 109-116 must be printed on photographic paper or photo printing paper and mounted on BLACK A5 STIFF CARD. The photographs must be smaller than A5 and firmly stuck to the mount.

THE CUP FOR PHOTOGRAPHY Awarded for the best overall print in this section A cash prize of £5 will be awarded to cup winners. Cash prizes of £3, £2 and £1 will be awarded in all other classes for 1st, 2nd

and 3rd places.

‘Wedding Celebration’ (may also include Blessing Ceremony) A photo you have taken of a wedding or wedding celebration you have attended, capturing the special oc-casion. It does not have to feature the couple getting married, it can formal or informal, a traditional or un-usual ceremony, but the Judge will not reward images that have been set up by an official wedding pho-tographer and snapped by you. You can also enter a photo taken by you from among the crowds at a Royal Wedding, including images taken at street party celebrations as long as the image clearly demon-strates that the event was a wedding celebration.

SCHOOLS COMPETITION & CHILDREN’S CLASSES Full details of all classes for schools and children will be published on the show website www.rwrhs.com and in the second edition of this schedule.

SUMMER SHOW REGULATIONS FOR EXHIBITORS

1. ENTRIES. All competitors must use the official entry form (see page 20 - photocopies accepted) to confirm which classes they intend to enter and submit it by Monday, 9th July, at the latest to RWRHS, 18 Horton Road, Datchet, SL3 9ER. Alternatively you can scan your completed form and email it to [email protected] by midday on Monday, 9th July. No fees are payable by RWRHS Members and Junior Classes entrants.

2. EXHIBITS. ONLY ONE EXHIBIT PER PERSON PER CLASS IS PERMITTED.All plants, flowers, foliage, vegetables or fruit must have been grown by theexhibitors in their own garden or allotment, except Flower Arranger classes. The Society reserves the right to inspect, before or after the show, gardens from which the exhibits have been entered for competition.

3. STAGING EXHIBITS. The school grounds and marquees will be open for the purpose of staging exhibits on Friday, 13th July, from 3pm to 8pm, and on Saturday, 14th July, from 7am to 9am ONLY but last admission to the marquee and issuing of entry cards is 8.30am.

4. EXHIBIT CARDS. Exhibit Cards must be collected by Exhibitors from the desk in the main show marquee by 8.30am. Exhibitors are responsible for checking and placing them face down in front of their exhibit in the correct class so that their name is not visible.

5. JUDGING. Judging of all classes will commence promptly at 9.15am on Saturday, 14th July. Stewards will clear the marquees prior to judging and all exhibitors must have left by 9am. Judges will not enter the marquees until all entries are staged and will have no conflicting interest in the classes they are judging. The decisions of the judges are final to such action as may be taken under rule 12.

6. THE BANKSIAN MEDAL (The Royal Horticultural Society’s coveted award). This is awarded for most points in the Horticultural sections classes 1-57.

7. PRIZES. No competitor may be awarded more than one prize in any class. Anyprize will be withheld or modified if the exhibits are considered unworthy of theprize offered. Prize monies must be collected from the Treasurer on Saturday, 14th July, between 3pm and 5pm otherwise they will be forfeited. Prize Giving will be held at 4pm on the Terrace.

8. CHALLENGE CUPS. Winners of Challenge Cups or Trophies will hold them for one year and must return them to RWRHS Offices, 18 Horton Rd, Datchet(01753 449 449, open 24hrs 7 days/wk) by May 1st, 2019. The Society no longer engraves cups, but has no objection to winners arranging their own engraving in the same style.

9. ALTERATION OR REMOVAL OF EXHIBIT. After judging has taken place, noexhibit may be altered or removed until 5pm on July 14th.

10. ROSES. The following rules apply specifically for rose entries: No new rose shall be exhibited except cultivars that are already in commerce or are alreadyadvertised for distribution in the following autumn or cultivars with distinctive names and registered, the names of such cultivars to be retained in the future. All roses shall be exhibited without artificial aid of any kind, except wire or other supports, which may only be used to keep the blooms erect. No foliage other than that growing on the stems exhibited shall be shown except where other-wise stated in the schedule. A bloom overdressed to alter its character will be treated as a bad bloom. If blooms are left tied or pelleted, up to 3 points may be deducted for each bloom so left in each vase or bowl.

11. VASES. Vases will be available on loan for exhibits in the Rose, Sweet Pea and Cut Flower classes and must be left in the marquee at the end of the show. The Society has a limited number of bowls for loan but competitors are advised to bring suitable ones to avoid not being able to enter a specific class.

12. PROTESTS. In exceptional circumstances any three members of the Committee of the Society shall have the power, either before or after the decision of the judges has been given, to declare any exhibit disqualified and their decision shall be final. Any protest must be made in writing and delivered to the Treasurer by 2pm, on the day of the Show, accompanied by a fee of £5.00. If the protest is upheld the fee will be returned but if considered by the Committee to be unsubstantiated for whatever reason the fee shall be forfeited.

13. LIABILITY FOR LOSS. All exhibits, personal property, etc. shall be at the risk ofthe exhibitor, and the Society shall not be liable for compensation for loss ordamage from any cause whatsoever.

14. VEHICLES. The Society is requested to bring to the notice of ALL exhibitors orany other person taking part in the Show that it WILL NOT be possible to take any vehicle to a tent or place of exhibition which is on the grass.

15. DEFINITIONS.

a. Amateur - An Amateur is a person who maintains a garden or grows plants, flowers, foliage, fruit or vegetables for pleasure and enjoyment.

b. Bowl, Vase and Container - A Bowl is a vessel having a diameter at its mouth at least equal to, but usually greater than its height. A Vase is a vessel having aheight greater than the diameter of its mouth. The word Container includes thevessel containing water in which the plant materials are placed and any othercovering which could appear to contain the flowers (e.g. a small tin hidden by apiece of bark), it may also include a separate base.
