SUMMER SCHOOL REPORT
Summary of Summer School program on Information and Systems Security School of Information Technology, VIT University, Vellore, India had organized a summer
school program on Information and Systems Security in association with ACM-India for 3
weeks from 29-05-2017 to 16-06-2017. ACM India had sponsored 4 such summer schools
in the country and VIT University, Vellore was the only institute in South India to organize
the program.
The objective of this summer school was to train the students and impart the knowledge in all
aspects of computer and communication security, including foundational topics such as
Cryptography as well as latest research topics. This three week program had an intensive 100
hours schedule with assignments and project work. The course had 4 streams, Cryptography,
System Security, Network Security and special lectures.
From the list of 272 applicants, a set of 40 students from different institutes and different
regions including IITs, NITs, Central Universities and other Engineering institutes were
selected to participate in this program. The students were from New Delhi, Pune, Mumbai,
Indore, Trivandrum, Sri City, Bangalore, Coimbatore and Chennai. The students were
accommodated in VIT hostels. The course had practical sessions, tutorial hours and student
presentations. As part of the program, the students completed a
research/analysis/programming project work in their chosen topic during this period.
Eminent speakers from reputed institutes delivered the lectures.

Overall it was a good learning experience for the students. In the future, the focus would be
on to attract the international students.
QS Summer School Summit
Summer School concept is becoming more and more popular among the universities across
the world and their students, because students are learning not only technologies through
summer schools, but also it is improving their team spirit, leadership and interpersonal skill.
It also builds multidisciplinary and diverse mind set among students which are essential
requirements for modern world and society. I am sure the presence and interactions of
learned people from across the world in this summit will develop summer school activities of
India in collaboration with top universities of the world. This will also help to improve the
existing quality and quantity of summer schools in India. VIT University has already
included project-based learning, research based learning, curriculum for applied learning,
fully flexible credit system, digital technologies, individual attention in its academic
processes. Our students are competing with the best students of the world in solving
engineering problems. Their performance is quite satisfactory in such global competitions;
this is the right time for us to strengthen our summer school activities further with the help of
best institutes of the world in this regard.
It is my pleasure to welcome the academicians and industry experts from all over the world to
the 3rd QS-Summer School Summit jointly organised by VIT University, India and QS Asia
during 5-8 December 2016 in Chennai, India. I would also like to invite you to visit our main
campus at Vellore, started in 1984. Vellore itself has a place in India's history of
independence, since it is here that the first movement to free India was initiated by the
Vellore Sepoy Mutiny some 200 years back, on 9 July 1806.
