PROGRAM NOTE
When Kyle D. Johnson asked me for a set of introspective piano
miniatures, my mind instantly raced to my earliest compositions. After putting off revisiting these pieces, many of which were only fragments, I began to dig through folders of early manuscripts, weaving and re-editing them into a suite at Kyle’s request. The process reminded me of a time, while searching through C.P.E. Bach’s keyboard repertoire, that I came upon a collection of his compositions under the category incerta (of uncertain origin). While arranging this suite, I was confronted with compositions altogether unfamiliar to me. I began to recollect the times and places where I learned the craft of composition; from where I currently stand, it appears like an almost unrecognizable place. The memories associated with these miniatures seem uncertain to me, as uncertain as if they too were of an ambiguous origin that I had never identified with, or at least forgotten about until now. This suite is dedicated to my first composition teacher Dr. Marshall Tuttle, my mentor and friend who brought life to my earliest compositions.
