It is the act of causing one’s own death. It is generally the result of despair, depression,

alcoholism, drug abuse. Stress factors such as financial difficulties or troubles with interpersonal relationships.

It can be prevented by limiting access to firearms, treating mental illness and drug abuse, and improving economic circumstances.

Suicide is the third-leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 24 years.

In India 5.5% of students die by committing suicide. Nearly one million people worldwide die by suicide each year. This

corresponds to one death by suicide every 40 seconds. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the world,

especially among young people. The four metropolitan cities — Bengaluru (1,989), Chennai (2,183),

Delhi city (1,397) and Mumbai (1,296) have reported higher number of suicides. These four cities together have reported almost 35.9% of the total suicides reported from 53 mega cities.

More than one lakh persons (1,35,445) in thecountry lost their lives by committing suicideduring the year 2012.

It is observed that social and economic causes have led most of the males to commit suicides whereas emotional and personal causes have mainly driven females to end their lives.

Suicide is preventable, most suicidal individuals desperately want to live, they are just unable to see the alternatives to their problems.

Most suicidal individuals give definite warning of their suicidal intentions but others are either unaware of the significance of these warnings or do not know how to respond to them

Talking about suicide does not cause someone to be suicidal.

Who successfully commits suicide more often, men or women?

The overall male: female ratio of suicide victims for the year 2012 was 65:35,

however, the proportion of Boys : Girls suicide victims (up to 14 years of age) was 49:51.

-Research has also explored the specific brain chemistry of those who take their own lives. Recent studies indicate that those who have attempted suicide may also have low levels of the brain chemical serotonin. Serotonin helps control impulsivity, and low levels of the brain chemical are thought to cause more impulsive behavior.

Stress also plays its role in suiside.
