Consultation on prescription of over-the-counter medicines The views of Newham residents are being sought on proposals to reduce prescribing of over-the-countermedicines for 33 minor short-term health concerns In the year to June 2017 the NHS spent nearly pound570m on prescriptions for medicines which can bepurchased over the counter from pharmacies and other outlets such as supermarkets These prescriptions include items for a condition that will heal without treatment or where they can bebought easily elsewhere such as vitamins Dr Prakash Chandra Chair of Newham CCG said This consultation gives people the opportunity tohave their say on the prescribing of over the counter medicines for 35 minor andor self-limitingconditions National guidance on prescribing over the counter items for these conditions could save the NHS moneyand put an end to the regional variations in what is available on prescription and allow the money saved tobe spent for the treatment of serious conditions like cancer In many cases self-care can be moreeffective and convenient than visting the GP and can free up valuable GP time The consultation which runs until 14 March is being carried out by NHS England and NHS ClinicalCommissioners in order to create a consistent national approach to prescribing All clinical commissioning groups including Newham CCG will receive guidance after the results of theconsultation are known Make your views known by completing the consultation here
