Cool at the Pool
Submitted by Kathy Eike
This year was a great swimming season for
the Melstone Community Swimming Pool.
The pool opened the middle of July with a
brand new liner along with an automatic
vacuum thanks to the remaining money
from the Coal Board grant.
Leah Brence and Linsey Eike spent two days
in Billings getting their lifeguard certification.
Now they join BreElle as lifeguards for the
Community Swimming Pool.
The Splash Bash, the major fundraiser, was August 28th this
year. About fifty-five people enjoyed free swimming, and ap-
proximately one hundred and forty-five people were served
at the dinner, the largest crowd ever. The profit form the
Splash Bash was $1650. Before the
pool season was over, it was being
used for cross country as well as for
P.E. classes. Thank you to everyone
who helps in any way to keep the
pool open. It’s a great place to cool
off on hot days, but more importantly,
it is where our children learn how to
swim.

Melstone Newcomers
By Kimber Korell
The first of our three new stu-
dents is Deva Bascom. She
came with her younger broth-
er, Ty. Her former school was
Weber High School, in Pleas-
ant View, Utah. She is a senior
this year and her favorite sub-
jects are English, Government,
P.E, and Choir. Sports that she
plays are soccer and swim-
ming. She played 1 year on
varsity for soccer and 2 years on varsity for swimming.
Her favorite hobbies are sleeping, spending time with
friends and family, riding horses, and traveling. Deva
thinks Melstone is really small compared to her old
school; she also thinks the town is cute, and she loves
the four day school week, but she does think it’s weird
having three kids in her class. A fun fact about her is
that she’s originally from Lewistown, MT, but she’s lived
in three different states since.
Our next new student is Deva’s brother, Ty Bascom,
who is a sophomore. His favorite hobbies include, bronc
and bull riding, hunting, and trucks. His thinks Melstone
is a very small town. Ty’s old school is Snowcrest; he
says it was only 300 kids, which he thinks is very small.
A fun fact about Ty is that he was born cross-eyed but
corrected it with sur-
gery. His favorite sub-
ject is P.E., and his
favorite sport is rodeo.
Our third student and
final newcomer is Wy-
att Herrmann from
Shillington, Pennsylva-
nia. His old school is
called Governor Mifflin
Middle School, and he is a freshman this year. His fa-
vorite subjects are yearbook and
Computers 1. Wyatt’s thoughts
on Melstone is that it’s a small
town with a good school. One
of his favorite hobbies is shoot-
ing handguns. Wyatt’s fun fact
is that he collects knives.

Welcoming New Faces By Gracey Adams
This year Melstone was lucky enough to get three for-
eign exchange students.
The first student is Vinicius Machado. He is from Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil. Vinicius is six-
teen years old. He is living
with the Bergins. His favorite
home cooked meal is steak
with rice and beans. He is an
only child. Vinicius’ favorite
thing about Montana so far is
the wonderful views.
The second student is Franka Johne.
She is from Berlin, Germany. She is
sixteen years old. She is living with
the Wackers. One of her favorite
home cooked meals is meatballs with
a special sauce and potatoes. She
has one brother; he is 18 years old.
She says she really doesn’t have one
favorite thing about Montana. She likes the people, the
food, the sky (with the stars), rodeos, and generally the
differences from Germany.
The final student is Vitor Gabriel.
He is from Juiz De Fora, Brazil.
Vitor is 15 years old. He is stay-
ing with the Merediths. His fa-
vorite home cooked meal is
beans, rice, spaghetti, and meat.
He does have a younger brother;
he is 4 years old. His favorite
part of Montana so far is the beautiful forests.

talented Melstone girls in
the Melstone/Roundup vol-
leyball co-op. TyRaa Ma-
nuel plays a middle hitter

sity. Kimber Korell plays an
outside hitter on C-squad. Megan Brewer is libero on

Manuel started the season out rough with a previous
knee injury from May. The season started on August
12th and will go until November 12th. At our Varsity

Melstone & Roundup Panthers By Wyatt Herrmann
The Melstone football
player’s co-op with
Roundup to make a
dominating team. The
Melstone high school
players travel all the
way to Roundup for
practice, and they are
determined to prac-
tice hard to deliver a
big win. Players Riley
Pinkman and Brody Grebe had their first game recently,
and it ended in a loss for the Panthers. The final score
was Roundup Panthers 6, Huntley Project 45. However,
the loss was just the beginning of a great season for
the Panthers. The following weekend, they were victori-
ous over Rocky Boy (55-6). Brody had two touchdown
runs. The next game the Panthers face is on September
16th against Malta, and it’s home. So get your nickels
and dimes together to and come to see this great
game.

· Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking mat and set aside. Fired Up for FFA Submitted by Abby Hansen
On the morning of Monday, August 8th, seven out of
the eight FFA officers and advisor Mr. Pierce, headed to
the western part of the state. First, we took a tour of the
Charles M. Bair Museum. We then had the opportunity
to tour the old Bair home itself. Then, we headed to
Polson, a city located on the Flathead Indian Reserva-
tion. The next day we took a tour of The Orchard at
Flathead Lake. Next, we headed to Lake Seed, Inc., and
toured the plant genetics lab. There we learned that
McDonalds is the only fast food chain that doesn’t coat
their fries. This is because the people at Lake Seed, Inc.,
mix two types of potatoes to get one big strong potato.
After that we toured the H.E. Robinson Vo Ag Center.
There we met Mr. Hankinson, one of the advisors for
Kalispell’s FFA Chapter and some of his officers. While in
Polson, we officers got the chance to become closer
and more engaged with our chapter. We set goals to
work harder and more efficiently this year. We got the
chance to explore downtown Polson and the shops
there. The FFA Officer team is as follows: President-
BreElle Wacker, Vice President:-Gillian Severe, 2nd Vice
President- Shayla Hough, Treasurer- Thomas DeJaegher,
Secretary- Megan Brewer, Reporter/Historian- Abby
Hansen, Sentinel- Riley Pinkerton, and last but not least,
Parliamentarian- Renee Parsons. Mr. Pierce hosted a
lunch time BBQ at his house on September 1st. Most of
the high school students were treated to cheese burg-
ers. Chapter officers and new members attended Dis-
trict Leadership School in Hysham on September 8th.
On behalf of the whole Melstone FFA Chapter, we look
forward to a great year and to the community’s help
and support.

Our Smallest Additions
By Joe Griswold
Our new kindergarteners are Quinn Herron, Rayelynn
Tuttle, Jacob Jorgenson, Siggen Newman, and Brooke
Seamster. They are being taught by Mrs. Kathy Eike.
They responded to three questions.
Quinn-Q, Rayelynn-R, Jacob-J Siggen-S, and Brooke-B.
What is your favorite class? Q: Music and Lunch R: Coloring and Science J: Science S: Reading B: Recess What is your favorite food? Q: Strawberries and candy R: Strawberries J: Apples with peanut butter S: Chicken B: Grapes What is your favorite game? Q: Minecraft R: Playing with Barbies J: Playing with toy combines or his
dogs S: Playing with his trucks B: Tag
From the Left to the Right: Jacob Jorgenson, Siggen
Newman, Quinn Herron, Rayelynn Tuttle, and Brooke
Seamster
When asked how she likes teaching Kindergarten
again, Mrs. Eike replied, “I love teaching kindergarten.
It’s exhausting for eight hours, but I don’t have two
hours of correcting every night. I have five great stu-
dents this year, and I’m really excited to come to
school every day.” She also misses her 5th and 6th
graders’ independence and the fact that she had to
give directions only once. Mrs. Eike thinks that the
most rewarding part of teaching kindergarten is
watching them learn to read. “I don’t have to wonder
if they’re learning. I can see the improvements on a
daily basis,” she replied when asked what she is look-
ing forward to this year. See Schedule, Previous Page.
