    yo = I

    The subject pronouns(Los pronombres de sujeto)

    Yo is used when I refer tomyself: Yo soy

    profesor.

    Unlike the English I,yo is onlycapitalized at the beginning of a sentence.

    t = youT is used to addresssomeone else directly:T eres estudiante.

    T is the proper form of address forclose friends and colleagues, familymembers, children, and God. It issometimes called the familiar you.

    usted = youUstedis another way toaddress someone elsedirectly: Usted esdoctor.

    Ustedis the proper form of address foreveryone not included in the previous

    paragraph. It is sometimes called theformal you. It is abbreviated Ud. orVd.

    Nosotros is used when Irefer to others and includemyself in the group:Nosotros somosnorteamericanos.

    Nosotros has a feminine form, nosotras,which is used when the speaker and allother members of the group are female.If a single male (or more than one) joinsthe group, the form reverts back to

    nosotros.

    vosotros = you (all)Vosotros is used toaddress a group of people:

    Vosotrossois espaoles.

    Vosotros also has a feminine form,vosotras, which is used to address agroup consisting entirely of females. It

    is the plural equivalent oft and is usedexclusively in Spain, never in theAmericas. Again, as with nosotros, ifone or more males join the group, theform reverts back to vosotros.

    ustedes = you (all)Ustedes is another way toaddress a group of people:Ustedes son muy amables.

    Ustedes is, of course, the plural form ofustedand is usedthroughout the Hispanic world as such. However, sinceSpanish speakers in the Americas do not use vosotros, itserves also as their plural oft. It is abbreviated Uds. orVds.

    Note: Modern English has no plural of you, so English speakersare obliged to say you all (or in the deep south, yall). Othersmay use you guys or in some areas youse, but none of these isconsidered acceptable in a formal sense.

    Ellos is used when we talk about a group of people,either all males or a mixture of males and females:Ellos son mis compaeros de clase.

    ellas = theyEllas is used when we talk about a groupcomprised exclusively of females: Ellas son mishermanas. Just as with nosotros and vosotros, if

    a male is added to the group, the form reverts toellos.

    Of course, English has no feminine form for they.
