Natural Forms (continued)

Students will: • Select a natural object and using their recording skills produce

a series of detailed observational resources. • Record using a wide range of different techniques looking at

line, form, tone and texture. • Research and respond to a range of artists who explore natural

forms in their work. • Develop their research and observational studies into a

Students can also select from the following activities to support the Natural forms unit of work:

1. Select an inspiring natural object, for example a Shell, Flower, Fruit etc if possible take some close-up photos of this object.

2. Use the internet to research the work of O’Keefe and use You tube to watch Sam Taylor Wood’s ‘Still life 2001’ – How are these artists similar/different?

3. Any visits to galleries would also enrich the wider understanding of art – take photos if possible or collect leaflets.

GCSE APPLIED BUSINESS STUDIES

Controlled Assessment 1

Students will complete the first Controlled Assessment. This is worth 20% of the overall mark for the course.

Pre-exposure homework

As the CA is a research based project where students must compare a local and a national business. The national business (Barratt Developments Plc) has been provided for them and a school visit is taking place. Students need to ensure they have carried out all the necessary research and planning into their local business.

Complete Production Unit

Students will learn about the different types of production and how businesses ensure that the quality of their products is high. They will investigate how businesses add value to their products and how technology impacts what is made. Students will then learn about the links between production and staffing whilst comparing Eastern and Western approaches to production.

Begin External Influences Unit

Finally, students will investigate methods of increasing efficiency and how businesses benefit from economies of scale when they grow. Students will learn how businesses analyse their external environments before investigating international trade and the EU. They will learn how laws are created and what key laws businesses must follow. Finally they will look at social and ethical business issues and evaluate examples of real businesses that have acted ethically and unethically. Students will be asked to decide if being ethical actually matters and if so can it actually increase a businesses profits.

RESISTANT MATERIALS Wooden storage

Identifying main ways of fabricating timber. Manufacturing a carcass with rebated and grooved lid and base. Designing a suitable lid.

Identify 3 softwoods and 8 Hardwoods. Outline 5 key material properties of a timber for revision books. What are the advantages of using timber over polymers and metals? What is a key disadvantage?

Butter, Marg, Oils and Sugar

• To understand the relationship between diet and health. • To be able to apply and demonstrate a knowledge of the

functions of food ingredients in the development of dishes and meals.

• Students will focus their K & U on fats and sugar, they will create a variety of food products from such ingredients including: choux pastry, nectarine galette and Victoria sponge cake. Focussing on developing practical skills.

Year 10 exam – listening and reading exam practice

Some classes will be finishing the topic of free time and completing an assessment on this with GCSE style skills. We will then complete a shorter topic on customs and festivals. Students will then be practising the listening and reading papers for their GCSE examination and they will be focussing on strategies for dealing with complicated texts, getting the gist in listening, and also learning vocabulary. They will complete the year 10 exam at the end of this short study module.

Coasts The types of wave: destructive and constructive. Students will know vocab and structures on the topics of Music, TV and film, Food and eating out and Sport. They will review the present tense and word order and understand how to form the perfect tense with regular and irregular verbs, and the future tense. Skills will focus on translations, Role-plays, photo cards, listening, reading and longer pieces of writing.

1. Use quizlet, memrise or the Kerboodle digital textbook to learn vocab from each topic.

SELF PROMOTION Project

Students will create a poster to promote an image of themselves, using international Street Art as inspiration, photography skills and CAD CAM. Students will manipulate a digital image using CAD to manufacture a stencil which could mass produce the image.

Who is ‘Banksy?’ Why has he been so successful? (list 5 ways.) Find and print 3 of your favourite Bansky images and give 3 reasons why you have chosen them.

Elizabethan England

Students continue to develop their historical knowledge and understanding regarding Elizabethan England by focusing on key aspects of Elizabethan life. Practice exam questions will be completed as part of the process of developing the required historical skills.

Independent research- what were Elizabethan attitudes to the poor? Make a note of how Elizabethan compare to modern attitudes towards the poor. What examples of continuity and change can you identify? Complete a character profile of Sir Francis Drake. FILM PROMOTION Completion of controlled assessment started in Spring Term For details see Curriculum overview – SPRING TERM This is a very important piece of work and accounts for 20% of the final GCSE grade.

MUSIC VIDEO

Assignment 3 - Practical Production and Evaluation In this assignment students will;

• Undertake a practical production of a three minute music video, from conception to realisation, together with an evaluation of 700-800 words.

• Become familiar with the production process involved in moving image production; research, planning, filming and editing.

• Develop their skills in team work in the production of this practical assignment.

This is a very important piece of work and accounts for 30% of the final GCSE grade.

Component 1 – Devised theatre 40%

Pupils will be continuing to develop there devised pieces of theatre from a stimulus. The pupils have been working on this since last term.

• Pupils must take part in practical rehearsals whilst contributing ideas to allow for the development of their piece.

• Pupils will use prior knowledge of dramatic mediums, elements and forms to allow them to create a piece of theatre.

Students will then be assessed upon their piece under exam conditions in May. (date to be confirmed)

Students are all working on individual and group ideas. Therefore the nature of homework is personal to every student. Students should do tasks such as:

1. Research into chosen topics or genres. For example this could be through using the internet or watching documentaries.

Students will study the topic of film. They will be able to express their opinion about different types of films and will write a film review of the Spanish Film ‘Voces inocentes’. They will then move on to discuss food, drink and sports. They will learn the formation of the future tense and develop their reading and listening skills.

1. Make a list of 10 different types of films and then use www.wordreference.com to find out what your words are in Spanish and then learn them.

2. Research the film ‘Voces Inocentes’ and make a list of the main characters, the director and a summary of the plot.

Students will explore and show the range of issues connected to the item chosen from the range of tasks set by the exam board. Students will independently produce analysis of the brief Students will continue to develop skills and confidence in using the sewing machine and additional specialist equipment including the over locker. They will complete the production of a skirt in a ‘mock’ industry production line where they will focus on high level skills such as application of a zip, buttonhole and pocket. This will enhance portfolio and final practical outcomes for the Controlled Assessment.
