Foundation Board NewsThe Family Sunshine Center Foundation continues support for the financial operations of the FSC. Theassets are used as needed for construction projects and development.

The assets of the foundation total $1.85 mill ion and are divided 60% equity and 40% fixed income. Ourcapital gains and dividends are reinvested at the same mix by the board and investment advisorWachovia Bank. Together, we routinely review the investment strategy. This year, in order to avoid taxpayments on investment income, the foundation changed its status to a Type 2 supporting organizationunder section 509 (a) (3).

The foundation’s endowment will continue to ensure financial support to the FSC. We appreciate theongoing support from the community.

Sincerely,

Louis C. Cardinal IIIPresidentFamily Sunshine Center Foundation Board

A Message from the President of the Board ofDirectorsDear Constituents:

Thinking about the leadership, staff and cl ients of the Family Sunshine Center calls to mind one of the mostmemorable female characters in our history. One of the survivors of the tragic sinking of the Titanic, shecame to be called the “unsinkable Molly Brown” for her courage, her determination and her unflagging spiritof hope in the face of overwhelming odds. She was one of those rare people in l ife who, when given alemon, makes lemonade.

That is exactly what board members, staff leaders, direct service providers and cl ients of the FSC have donethis f iscal year–taken challenging financial news, refused to be deterred by it and worked very hardemploying a wide range of strategies to overcome it. At the same time, the agency has accomplished manyof its major goals– aspiring to recruit and maintain qualif ied and dedicated staff, maintaining high visibil ityin the community, beginning to master long-range fund-raising goals, partnering with other agencies thatcan offer in-kind services to cl ients, working closely with task forces in Montgomery and surroundingcounties to offer training to specific groups, and planning and implementing a series of meetings withmunicipal and county officials in outlying counties to acquaint them with the Family Sunshine Centermission and to request their f inancial support in the future.

In addition to the routine business of bringing hope and healing to victims of domesticviolence, there were a number of highlights during the year worthy of mention. Forexample, a special conference during April, Child Abuse Awareness Month, broughtprofessional educator Esther Williams back to Montgomery to present “BuildingEmpathy and a Conscience in the Angry Child”; followed by the second annual MakingHomes Safe Havens fund-raising event, which was bigger and better than ever; and inlate September, a partnership with Auburn University Montgomery; the Alabama CrimePrevention Clearinghouse & Training Institute; the U. S. Attorneys’ Office, Middle District

of Alabama; the Montgomery County Domestic Violence Task Force; and others yielded a very successfulconference on stalking and other predatory behavior. This year’s volunteer recognition and annual meeting wasespecially meaningful, featuring keynote speaker Tonya Terry, a WSFA-TV anchor. Throughout the year, theagency’s exposure on television, radio and in print brought incredible visibility to the FSC’s mission.

Special thanks go to all the many volunteers and donors who gave their time and resources to allow us toprovide warm and nurturing shelter, which includes medical and legal services, to the famil ies we serve;transitional housing that engenders hope and opportunity for successful daily l iving; a perpetrators’intervention program that provides batterers a chance to understand and overcome their desire for powerand control; follow-up services that ensure that the security of a sheltering environment is reinforced ascl ients assume independent l iving; and non-residential counseling services and support groups that helpadult and child victims of domestic violence understand and respond to the fact that abuse often follows aparticular pattern and repeats itself in a cycle.

It has been my pleasure to serve as president of this vital organization during the last f iscal year, and I lookforward to working with the large contingent of Family Sunshine Center supporters into the future.

Sincerely,

Katherine JacksonPresidentFamily Sunshine Center Board of Directors

A Message from the Executive DirectorDear Gentle Reader,

Last year the Family Sunshine Center had uncertain funding and I was not sure we would make it throughfinancially without having to use part of our small reserve. But we did! It took many types of efforts, including sacrif ices by our staff and efforts to increase local giving from community supporters for ourmission.

I met with staff in January 2007 to advise them that, even though we had budgeted for retirement andraises, our f inancial projections indicated we would not be able to fund them. The staff made 13suggestions of expenses totalling $13,000 in cuts and most of them were implemented. We deferredroutine maintenance as much as we could without compromising mechanical systems. We also wrote some“long shot” grants to national foundations like AVON, which were not successful, but we felt like we had totry everything. Our main thrust was to try and increase the number of local, multi year donors willing topledge $1,000 or more.

The push to increase local giving is having slow, but sure success. We have gone from having 12 gifts of $1,000or more in 2005 to having 42 gifts ranging from $1,000 to $50,000 in 2007. The value of multi year pledges istwofold. The first, cultivating gifts, is very time-consuming because it is based on the donor knowing theorganization mission and believing it has value worthy of financial investment. Second, multi year pledgingallows Julie Young, our financial director, to accurately forecast revenues and expenditures. It allows me tounderstand what adjustments I will make to expand or curtail operations.

There are too many people and organizations to thank for the financial successachieved and I hesitate to mention them lest I overlook anyone. Several I have toacknowledge. Mr. Robert Pruitt and his staff at the Law Enforcement/Traffic SafetyDivision of ADECA were so instrumental in helping us identify government funds, which saved our violence prevention program and sustained services. TheMontgomery County Commission also helped. The Working Woman Foundation hasbeen a staunch supporter of our mission. As usual, our Angel gave most generously. And then, there were the additional 30 donors who joined the $1,000 Plus Club.

I realize that so often for the last three years my main communication to you isabout funding of our mission. My passion is program development for family violence victims anddeveloping strategies for saving lives. Hopefully, one day, the Family Sunshine Center will be f inanciallyself-sufficient to the point that fund-raising does not consume so much organizational energy, but we havenot arrived there yet. Thank you, our supporters, for getting us through the previous year f inancially withlimited program and service cuts.
