separates in sumptuous black and nude

fabrics. exclusively designed textiles,

which you’ll see running as a theme

throughout the collection, include a

tessellated design and a geometric art

deco pattern.

william took inspiration from ancient

egyptian mythology, 1920s interiors

and the work of the famed artist, m.

c. escher, for his designs. the scarab

beetle, a symbol of wealth and power

for ancient egyptians, acts as a key

motif which runs throughout the range

via prints and intricate detailing.

debut via short film at london Fashion

week’s second biannual

Fash/on Film festival. Fash/on

Film, an initiative devised by the

british Fashion council in conjunction

with river island, aims to support and

Five minutes with william tempest

“i was 15 when i decided to become a designer. i was really

interested in art and graphics at school and i stumbled across

the galliano biography written by Colin mcdowell. The pictures

in the book were amazing, i was hooked and i knew then that

fashion was for me.”

“For a boy from cheshire, there have been lots of career

highlights along the way. i remember when i first started i

received a letter from an american lady; she’d bought a dress

from my first collection for her daughter’s hawaii wedding.

you could just tell how much the dress meant to her and how

perfect it was for the occasion. i like things like that! showing

for the first time at new york fashion week, and also winning a

wgsn fashion award were amazing experiences too.”

“Being able to reach a wider audience with my designs is

great. This is my first high street line so lots of friends and

family are excited to be able to buy my pieces closer to home

without it costing them an arm and a leg.”

“i take a lot of inspiration for my designs from friends, but

the great thing i’ve learnt about my dresses is that so many

different people and ages appreciate them. my river island

range was designed with an understated, cool girl in mind; i

really like kristen stewart’s style at the moment.”

“the main muse for my river island range was louise Brooks,

a famous model and dancer in the 1920s. more in the present

though, the dropped waists and Twenties references in the

collection are right up my friend Jess’ street. she’s a fashion

journalist and never fails to inspire.”

“the flapper dress is my favourite piece from the collection.

The fabric is an art deco design in matt sequins and it has fringe

beading at the hem. i love how the design plays with sheer and

opaque contrasts. it’s very moody, sexy, and comes in a black

and a nude version. The laser-cut scarab beetle boots are also

a favourite.”

“the great thing about the FasH/on Film initiative is that

it shows the spirit of my collection, as well as the clothes in

motion. we had so much fun producing the design forum

film at the most amazing location (brocket hall just outside

of london). hopefully it will reach a wide audience across the

globe online. watch out for a cameo from me towards the end

of the film!
