CEHD Insider - February 2017 College, Student, Alumni News, and Special Events CEHD News SPED Faculty in the News Ginevra Courtade, Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education (SPED), has been named Editor of Rural Special Education Quarterly, the journal of the American Council on Rural Special Education. Jessica Hardy, Assistant Professor, recently joined the Editorial Board of Topics in Early Childhood Special Education and also co-authored a chapter titled, "Supporting the implementation of tiered models of behavior support in early childhood settings," for the Handbook of early childhood special education. Robert Pennington, Associate Professor, is the new president elect of the Kentucky Association for Behavior Analysis. In addition, Dr. Pennington gave three presentations at the Annual Conference for the Council for Exceptional Children's (CEC) Division for Autism Developmental Disabilities, which was held in January. ELEOD Awarded CFDC for 2017 The Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development (ELEOD) has been awarded the U.S. Army's Cadre & Faculty Development Course (CFDC) for 2017. The purpose of this program is to develop world-class cadre with knowledge, skills, and abilities to instruct and lead future officers of the United States Army in diverse, college-level environments with both functional and cutting-edge research in higher and postsecondary education, learning sciences, college student development, and organizational behavior. This program involves more than 55 faculty, six staff, and a program evaluation team. Jeffrey Sun, Department Chair, is the PI and the project cost is just over $2.3 million. HSS Instructors Jessica Gibb, Liza Ledford, Mike Jett, and graduate assistants Greta Cesarz, Kristin Nash, Frank Muntis, and Keith Gworek planned and delivered the workshop. The cadets were led through a dynamic workout designed for skill and fitness development. Larson Serves on Dean's PanelIn late January, Ann Larson, Dean and Professor in the CEHD, served on a panel with other UofL women deans that was hosted by the Kentucky Chapter of the International Women's Forum (IWF). She along with Deans Susan Duncan (Interim Dean Law School), Kimberly Kempf-Leonard (Arts & Sciences), Beth Boehm (Graduate School), and Marcia Hern (Nursing) engaged participants in an

exchange of ideas and discussion on how to build better leadership for a changing world and workplace. IWF connects the world's most preeminent women of significant and diverse achievement.

Shuck Quoted in Forbes ArticleBrad Shuck, Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development, was recently quoted in an article in Forbes Magazine. The article, An 'Employee Value Proposition' mindset just might fix employee Engagement, examines alternatives to creating a work-place that attracts and retains talented employees, and maintains a work environment that not only engages

ELEOD Hosts JCPS Leadership MeetingThe Department Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development hosted a breakfast meeting for CEHD and Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) leadership, which included the presentation of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) Excellence in Educational Leadership Awards.

Dean Larson opened the meeting and Kyle Ingle, Assistant Chair, and Carlos McCray, Associate Professor, presented the awards to Marty Pollio, Principal at Doss High School, and Katy Zeitz, Assistant Superintendent for Academic Achievement K-12. Both are graduates of the CEHD's Educational Administration and Leadership Ph.D. program. Blake Haselton, Associate Professor, presented an update on the UofL/JCPS partnership and Jeffrey Sun, Department Chair, provided closing remarks for the meeting.

Brown Recognized for Years of Service by ASTESherri Brown, Assistant Department Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education, was honored during the Association for Science Teacher Education's (ASTE) Award Luncheon that was held in January for three years of service as an elected Board Member and Chair of the Program Committee. Her service included organizing and creating

conference programs for the 2015, 2016, and 2017 International Conference ASTE meetings.

Hums a Guest on KPCC Los Angeles Radio ShowMary Hums, Professor in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences, was an invited guest on the KPCC Los Angeles NPR radio show, Air Talk. The topic of discussion was the impact of the Muslim country travel ban on the LA 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games bid. Listen to the show...

Welcome New CEHD StaffPlease welcome Amanda Bringhurst, Administrative Associate, in the Department of Counseling and Human Development, and Ellen Smith, Administrative Associate, in the Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development. Amanda will be mainly responsible for processing program applications and some department business functions. Ellen is primarily working on the Cadre Faculty and Development Course (CFDC) project.

• Friday, April 28th, 6 - 8 p.m., University Club Teachers of Color Celebration Hosted by MTRP, Jefferson County Public Schools, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and the Greater Louisville Alliance of Black School Educators. Chisholm and Whitmore Present at UofL Workshop

The Commonwealth Center for Humanities and Society, the Departments of English and Comparative Humanities, and the Thruston B. Morton Endowment host the Discourse and Semiotics Workshop Series at UofL. James Chisholm, Assistant Professor in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education, and Kathy Whitmore, Endowed Chair for Early Childhood Education, were invited to present a workshop on their research methods that were designed to understand how middle grade readers learned about the Holocaust and Anne Frank's diary through the arts.

Quentin Hunter, a doctoral student in counseling psychology, has been appointed to chair the Kentucky Association for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues in Counseling's Strategic Planning and Educational Resources Committee.

Jeanne Guerrero, a doctoral student in the Higher Education Administration program, will conduct a poster presentation, The potential for educational technology to bridge precollege science, math, and technology education for Hispanic and Latino students, at the 11th annual International Technology, Education and Development Conference. The conference will be held in Valencia, Spain in March.

Brittany Crawford, a doctoral student in the Educational Psychology, Measurement, and Evaluation program, was selected for an American Education Research Association (AERA) Research on Giftedness, Creativity, and Talent SIG Graduate Student Fellowship, which recognizes excellence in graduate student research. She will present, The relationship of giftedness and test-taking motivation with low- and high-stakes tests, at the 2017 AERA annual conference.

Alumni NewsMichael Anthony, a graduate of the Ph.D. and M.A. Higher Education Administration programs, is the new Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Rochester Community and Technical College. He previously served as assistant vice president for student affairs and chief diversity officer at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, IL. Read more...

Nana Arthur-Mensah, a graduate of the Ph.D. program in Educational Leadership and Organizational Development, is one of three Top Finalists in the 2016 Academy of Human Resource Development (AHRD) Malcolm S. Knowles Dissertation of the Year Award competition. Finalists are invited to the AHRD conference that will be held in March in San Antonio, TX.
