Welcome Study Skills is a class that will help encourage you to

become a more successful person in your classes and everyday life. This class will provide you with assistance and strategies to help you with projects, the writing process, test taking, completing assignments, organization, learning how to study, and also help with life skills needed in the work place and post secondary schools. Many of these skills you may already use and use them well, but in the world we live WE all must be at the top of our game and striving to be better than our competition! This class will help you improve all of your skills. In this course you will earn 1 credit towards the 22 needed for graduation. Study Skills is not a Study Hall, and is not ran as one we will always be working on improvement!

Course Requirements/Rules

Agenda Book – Is a must for this class. I do not have issues with alternative options. Organization is the key to success, and utilizing your Agenda correctly in each of your core subject areas will ensure that. You will be required to use this book/alternative in all of your classes for specific course requirements. Agenda will be graded Weekly! Agenda Rubric

Weekly Writing Assignments- In this class there will be weekly writing assignments. The writing assignments will be Curriculum –Based, and will be graded by the PSSA scoring guideline. These writing probes are very important to help develop written expression, but also with progress monitoring.

Notebook Check- A three-ring loose leaf notebook is utilized in this class and will be given to you for you to keep in G111. This notebook is to keep all your Study Skills lessons/papers in. You will receive many handouts in this course, all items need to be kept in this notebook. This notebook will then become a valuable resource for you to reflect upon.

Study Skills Lessons- This class will provide you with valuable information on: Note Taking, Test Taking, Organization, Learning Styles, Reading Strategies, Written Expression, Goal Setting, and Time Management. These lessons will be one to two times per week at the beginning of each class.

Participation- PACE You will receive a daily participation grade in this class. This grade will be based on your Participation in lessons, your Attitude during class, Core subject areas, you will bring required work , and from your elective courses to complete in this class. Finally Excused absences, when you are not in school, you are not LEARNING! You cannot earn PACE points without being present in my class.

Attendance- Daily attendance is critical to your progress, growth and mastery of subject materials. Timely class attendance improves your learning. Choose a seat that will be best for you and your learning process, and have materials on the desk at the start of each class. Read the Agenda/Board and start working after the bell rings.

IF YOU MISS A SCHOOL DAY, YOU HAVE MISSED 8 PERIODS WORTH OF SCHOOL WORK! SCHOOL DOES GO ON WITHOUT YOU, AND YOU ARE NOW RESPONSIBLE FOR COLLECTING ALL YOUR BACK ASSIGNMENTS AND GETTING CAUGHT UP!

Bring- everything to class, together we will get you caught up and back on track!

Calculations of your grade will be determined according to the following scale:

Agenda 25%

Notebook 25%

Lessons 25%

Participation 25%

You are individually responsible for completing YOUR OWN work. An assignment in which you turn in must be yours. PresentingMaterials by others/copying is forbidden! Allowing others to copy Your work or you copying others work to try and catch up will result In both of you being given a ZERO. Cheating is unethical and Diminishes you as a student!

ExpectationsSchool is an

Opportunity!!

I stick to the policies and procedures found in the student handbook and guideline folder- I expect you to do the same. All rules will be enforced fairly and equally.

THERE WILL BE NO CELL PHONES ON OR USED IN MY CLASS! You will be given a warning, 2nd offence it will be taken, 3rd time taken until end of day, 4th time office.

There are people in this world who are different than you, whether it be religion, sexual preference, intelligence, culture, physical ability/appearance, race, and any other individual traits. Disrespectful and rude comments will NOT be tolerated on any level. Comments that demean and put down other people are never acceptable, whether the person is or is not in your presence.

Failure to meet these expectations and school rules will result in removal from my class, reassignment of your seat, detention, or disciplinary referral
