Convection: the transfer of heat by the movement of a heated fluid or gas
As the fluid or gas heats, the molecules spread out and become less dense. Then they move upwards, over the cooler fluid. Then as it cools, it becomes more dense and sinks.

When something is heated, does it become more dense or less dense?

Act it out (quietly): The floor is the hot outer core of the Earth. You are hot rock in the mantle. Hot rock rises because it is less dense, then it cools and becomes more dense, and then it sinks.
