Foundedin1479theUniversityofCopenhagenhasalong
traditionofwelcominginternationalstudents.Afterthree
unsuccessfulattempts,theDanishKingChristiantheFirst
finallyobtainedpermissionfromthePopeinRometoestab-
lishamediaevalUniversityservingtheNordiccountriesand
NorthernEurope.ThePope’sonlyconditionwasfortheking
tofindaplacefortheUniversitywithplentyoffoodavail-
able–andCopenhagenwaschosen.Itturnedouttobea
wisechoice.ThecityisasafeEuropeanCapitalwithabustling
culturallife,anditoffersyounotonlyfood,butalsoplentyof
foodforthought.TodaytheUniversityofCopenhagenishost
tomorethan2,000internationalexchangeandfull-degree
studentseveryyear.Thestudentscomefromapproximately
65differentcountries,eachaddingacosmopolitanflavorto
theteaching,researchandsociallifeoftheUniversity.
Wehopethisguidewillmakeyoufeelwelcome,andthatit
willanswersomeofthequestionsthatyouhavebeforecom-
ingtoCopenhagenandduringyourstay.Studyingabroad
maybeverydifferentfromstudyingathome,butwewilldo
ourbesttohelpyouadjustandhaveasuccessfulexperience

TheUniversityofCopenhagenistheoldest
UniversityinDenmark.Itwasfoundedasa
CatholicUniversityin1479withpermission
ofthePopeinRome.AftertheReformation,
itwasreopenedasaProtestantuniversity
in1537.Throughoutitslonghistory,the
Universityhasadaptedanddeveloped.
On1January2007theUniversityofCopen-
hagenmergedwiththeRoyalVeterinary
andAgriculturalUniversityandtheDanish
UniversityofPharmaceuticalSciences.The
twouniversitiesarenowfacultiesatthe
UniversityofCopenhagen.
TodaytheUniversityofCopenhagenhasa
studentbodyofmorethan37,000andmain-

fromusaslateasacoupleofweeksbefore

Citizenship Health Insurance
Non EU/EEA Students from non-EU/EEA and non-Nordic countries staying for more than three
and months should apply for a Health Insurance Card upon arrival. The certificate isNon-Nordic valid immediately after you have registered with the local civil registration office – Countries Folkeregistret/Borgerservice.It is therefore strongly recommended that you register as soon as possible after arrival.
EU and EEA European students who are planning to stay for more than 3 months should bring
Countries the European Health Insurance Card from their local health insurance office. This card is proof that you are entitled to health insurance at home, and therefore it entitles you to apply for the regular Danish Health Insurance upon arrival in Denmark. The Danish Health Insurance is valid immediately after you register with the local civil registration office – Folkeregistret/Borgerservice. It is therefore strongly recommended that you register as soon as possible after arrival.
British and Austrian students are covered under the Danish Health Insurance. If a British or an Austrian student requires medical assistance, before they receive their Health Insurance Card, they should show their passport to the doctor and refer to the special agreement with Denmark.
Nordic Nordic students are covered for up to six months by the Danish Health Security Act Countries if you need acute medical treatment. If you are staying for more than six months,
you must register with the local civil registration office – Folkeregistret/Borgerser-vice to be covered. You are able to register if you stay in Denmark more than three months.

Cultureshockisthenamegiventoafeeling
ofdisorientationorconfusionthatoften
occurswhenapersonleavesafamiliar
placeandmovestoanunfamiliarplace.
Thereactionmaybebothphysicaland
psychological,andsomestudentswill
probablyatsomepointaskthemselves
whytheychosetoleavetheirfamiliar
surroundings.Itisimportantthento
rememberthatitisalearningprocess,and
thatmoststudentswillreturnwithgreater
self-confidenceandtheabilitytomanagein
aninterculturalenvironment.
WhenyouarriveinDenmark,youwill
nodoubtencounteramultitudeofnew
things.Thefoodisnotthesameasitisat
home,andfamiliargreetingssuchas’hello’
and’goodday’,’thanks’and’howare
youdoing’maysuddenlygivecompletely
differentresponsesthantheonesyouare
