Pusan National University is one of the top ranked universities in
Korea and leads the nation in research
and higher education. Established and
funded by the government, the university
provides educational opportunities in almost
all areas of study and supports the needs of
quality higher education in the southeastern
area of the country. Its contribution to the region’s
economy and society has been immeasurable. As
of April 2012, around 2,900 staff in total including 1,162
full-time professors and 766 administrative staff
and teaching assistants are engaged in academic
support. Students of around 27,700 including
948 international students are dedicated
in research and studies at PNU where
various programs are offered including
humanities, sciences, engineering, nano-
technology, life-science, law, business,
arts, medicine, etc. PNU, the renowned

Academic ExcellencePNU’s academic excellence has been demonstrated many times
in the assessment by the Korean government. Pusan National
University took third place in terms of the number of publications
in SCI registered journals, and fifth place in terms of the number of
publications in SCI registered journals per faculty among all four-
year colleges in Korea. In addition, PNU took second place among
all Korean four-year colleges by registering 33 project teams in the
Brain Korea 21 (BK21) Phase 2 projects, for the promotion of which
it will receive a total of 145.5 billion won. In the assessment for
the first year of the project, 15 of PNU’s project teams received an
“excellent” grade from the authorities.
Enhanced International ProgramsNow PNU aspires to make its share of contribution to the global
society. In a bid to globalize the campus, the University tripled
the number of courses provided in English across all disciplines
recently. In addition, there are international programs especially
friendly to international students including Graduate School of
International Studies, Department of Global Studies and PNU
Summer School. Combined with our first-rate Korean Language
Courses, these programs present wonderful opportunities to
learn about Korea through university level discussions while
enjoying Busan’s beautiful mountains and beaches.
Multi and Specialized Campus SystemPNU also boasts of its specialized campus system. The University
has four campuses which are within an hour’s drive of each other.
Busan Campus is the main campus and the site for Humanities
and Arts, Natural and Social Science, Engineering, Education,
Pharmacy, Human Ecology, Law and Business. Yangsan and Ami
campuses are the sites for both Western and Oriental Medicine.
Miryang campus is the site for Bio and Nano Science. You can
find beautiful trees and streams on Busan Campus, state-of-the-
art medical facilities at Yangsan and Ami campuses, and pastoral
beauty and serenity at Miryang campus.

Busan Metropolitan City, a bustling city of approximately 3.6 million residents, is located on the southeastern tip of the Korean peninsula. The natural environment of Busan is a perfect example of harmony between
mountains, rivers and sea. Its geography includes a coastline with superb beaches and scenic cliffs, mountains
which provide excellent hiking and extraordinary views, and hot springs scattered throughout the city. Busan
enjoys four distinct seasons and a temperate climate that never gets too hot or too cold.
Busan is the second largest city in Korea. Its deep harbor and gentle tides have allowed it to grow into the largest
container handling port in the country and the fifth largest in the world. The city’s natural endowments and rich
history have resulted in Busan’s increasing reputation as a world class city of tourism and culture, and it is also
becoming renowned as an international convention destination.

Pusan National University has established academic cooperation relationship with many renowned universities
internationally to give students opportunities to study abroad for a short term in each partner university through
the student exchange program.
If your university has a partnership for student exchange with PNU, you can have a chance to study at PNU for one
semester or two enjoying various benefits and privileges as an exchange student. If you are interested, please
contact the International Office at your university. They will provide you with the application documents and
guide you through the application procedure.
Benefits for Exchange StudentsThe incoming exchange students who are nominated by our partner universities are eligible for the following
benefits.
•Tuition and registration fee waiver
•Special scholarship of $2,000~2,500 (for a limited number of students)
•Free Korean language courses
•Participation in PNU Summer School at a reduced fee
•Buddy system : one-on-one assistance
Exchange benefits can be different and more extensive from partner to partner. You can check it with either the
home international office or the Office of International Affairs at PNU.

19Department of Global Studies
The Department of Global Studies(DGS) has joined PNU’s College of Economics and International Trade. The DGS is the most recent addition to the university’s proud tradition. For more than sixty years, PNU has helped
to produce South Korea’s highly educated public. In addition, the university’s location in Busan, one of the gate
ways and crossroads of East Asia, is a vital asset. Students benefit from Busan’s flourishing commercial and cultural
life as well as the university’s growing academic prominence. The inauguration of this department is a step in the
university’s and the city’s development as a global business and educational hub.
DGS will prepare the next generation of Korea’s leaders for careers in international organizations, government,
media, policy research, trade associations and multinational corporations. Our innovative vision is to offer
undergraduate students an academic experience like that in North American and European universities. The
department will offer a challenging, interdisciplinary curriculum taught entirely in English and almost exclusively
by native speakers. Included in the curriculum are courses in law, international relations, history, economics,
business, political science, human rights and religion.
Eligibility Graduates of Korean high schools and foreign high schools in Korea, Korean nationals abroad, and those of
any nationality who have graduated from secondary schools abroad are welcome to apply to the department.
Selection criteria include an assessment of students’ high school documents. All who wish to apply must submit
the standard university application forms, either in Korean or English and prove either a certain level of TOPIK
or an appropriate standardized English test score. The only acceptable standardized English tests are TOEFL
(above PBT 550, IBT 80), IELTS (above 5.5), TEPS (above 550). A department interview is also required. International
students are encouraged to study Korean to strengthen the education capability. Further information regarding

ScholarshipScholarship programs are administered every semester, and the details are: The Awardee Selected in Priority,
which is for the students with special conditions like Independence Patriots’ Descendants, The Awardee Funded
by Registration Fees, which is selected in two categories of The Student with Excellent Score and The Student
from Impoverished Family, The Scholarship for the Students under the Basic Livelihood Guarantee Program,
The Working Scholarship Student and The National Working Scholarship Student, both of which support tuition
fees and living expenses by the working in University or Department facilities, and the participation in national
scholarship programs managed by major business companies, among others.

PNU’s Global Forum Beginning in the second semester of 2010, Pusan National University introduced a dynamic new approach to
higher learning. Designated the PNU Global Forum, this course, open to all undergraduate students, is intended
to bring these students together with the university’s exchange student population. Besides the interaction
of these two student populations that this course in part intends, a primary aim of this interaction will be the
mutual development of these two student populations’ abilities to understand and discourse on a variety of
current global issues. In preparation for each weekly 3 class hour session, the students will read assigned, pre-
distributed background materials on selected topics of world importance. Through brief introductory lectures
in English which set forth the goals being sought in the examination of each of the topics, the students will
be able to develop their auditory skills. As they are guided through each topic by the instructor, the students’
understanding of each topic will be further enhanced by invited guest experts who have specialized knowledge
of the topics and who will offer their insights. Following the introduction of the topics, the students will then be
separated into rotating groups of three or four made up of an equal distribution of the two student populations.
In these small groups under the instructor’s supervision, the students will explore the topics through their own
discussions. Following their discussions, in order to develop their analytical skills, the students will prepare a
group written statement summarizing their group’s discussion. The students will then read
these statements to the class as a whole. During this phase, the
members of the class will be invited to critique the views of each
group and offer added discussion. Following this exercise, the
instructor, with student input, will summarize the views offered
by the discussion groups and develop some conclusions. For the
students who participate in the PNU Global Forum, the benefits
include gaining experience not only in listening, speaking, reading
and writing English, but also in organization, communication,
negotiation skills and group interaction. Ultimately, of course, the
students will experience a widening of their intellectual horizons.

The PNU Summer School provides foreign students with an enriched cultural and educational experience for three or four weeks. The program consists of academic subject courses, Korean language courses, various
cultural activities and field trips. It is divided into two sessions that share common features while their schedules
are not overlapping with each other. Students can choose one according to their schedule, preferences and
purpose.

The Institute of International Language Education(IILE) at PNU offers four sessions of Korean Language Courses a year for international students. Each session is ten weeks long and the curriculum covers
Korean tradition, contemporary pop culture, and cultural trips. At IILE, you not only learn the language but also
gain understanding of Korean culture. Our teachers are experienced, professionally trained instructors in teaching
Korean as a foreign language and have a deep understanding of Korean culture. They are dedicated to providing
you with excellent classroom instruction.
The courses are organized to develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while aiming at the overall,
balanced progress of the four fields. The program also guides students to better understand Korea and its culture
by providing cultural excursions and student helpers. Courses are offered on six different levels. Students are
placed at an appropriate level after taking a placement test.

If you are interested in or have any questions about studying at Pusan National University, the Office of International Affairs(OIA) would be the first contact you need to make. First established in 1990, OIA has been a helping hand for international students and scholars.
The services include providing admission information, inviting exchange students, arranging housing, assisting
the registration, giving orientations about campus life, and counseling students about academic and non-
academic issues. These services are now much more reinforced with the opening of the International Services
Center and the Global Lounge. These two wings of service aim to cater all of your needs and help you lead a
fulfilling, rewarding and ultimately, independent life here at PNU.
OIA offers a variety of programs providing opportunities for international students to communicate with Korean
professors and students, discuss cultural issues, and get assistance in dealing with academic challenges and daily
tasks.
Foreign Student Advisory Committee is comprised of professors with international experience in various
regions, and provides counseling to international students with an understanding of the students’ perspective.
The Committee also selects Korean student tutors for international students who show good aptitude for
intercultural communications and cooperation.
Tutoring Program provides one-on-one assistance to international students in their academic and language
studies. This program is introduced in consideration of the difficulties that international students face with regard
to language barrier. PNU Buddy Program is also a one-on-one assistance designed to help exchange students
at their arrival. Student buddies provide airport pick-up, assistance in alien registration, course registration, and
cultural exchanges.

DormitoryPNU dormitory provides a unique opportunity to live in an environment that
fosters academic excellence, while encouraging cross-cultural understanding,
cooperation and friendship. PNU’s eight residence halls (4 in Busan, 3 in
Miryang, and 1 in Yangsan campus) house 4,434 students (16.2% of the whole
enrollments) in total, and help students’ campus life to be more enjoyable.
About 500 residents are international students who have come from 35
different countries creating an atmosphere of international community within
and around the residential areas.
Hyowon HallHyowon Hall is a large-scale multi-purpose complex located by the main
gate. At the NC department store, which is located in this building, people can
enjoy easy and convenient shopping, dining, and cultural experiences. The
building also accommodates the School of Continuing Education and the Art
Center. The School of Continuing Education offers a variety of education and
training opportunities serving both university members and local residents.
The Art Center is a place open to all forms of art exhibition whether it is classic,
experimental, or traditional. You can enjoy art here all the year round.
Music HallPNU Music Hall is a five-story building that houses a concert hall with 256 seats,
professors’ offices, private practice rooms, and a rehearsal room. Between the
two wings of the building, an open space for concert is placed. A concert or
two are held in the hall almost every week, and many concerts are admission
free. PNU Music Hall is where students and university employees can enrich
their soul with melodies and rhythms.
Gyeongam Sports and Recreation CenterGyeongam Sports and Recreation Center is the place for sports and recreational
activities. The center is composed of two buildings, the Professor’s Building and
the Sports Complex Building. The Sports Complex Building is equipped with
a playing field with 1,600 auditorium seats, fitness exercise facilities, squash
arena, golf practice facilities, gymnastics facilities, and martial art competition
arena.

Healthcare CenterLocated on the 8th floor of Hyowon Hall, the Healthcare Center offers free health care
services for students, including medication and first aid. Its services are categorized
into general health care services and dental services. General health care services can
include medication for students with colds and simple clinical treatment, while dental
services include the treatment of tooth decay, endodontic treatment, gum care, tooth
extraction, and tooth cleaning. Some dental services are partially charged.
CafeteriasStudents can enjoy the student cafeterias in Moonchang Hall (next to Physics Hall),
Saetbeol Hall (next to Earth Hall), Geumjeong Hall (next to Social Science Hall), and
Student Hall (next to Music Hall). Most of the cafeterias serve breakfast, lunch, and
dinner and the cost is lower than at restaurants off campus. You can also find various
restaurants in Hyowon Hall each of which is specialized in serving specific types of
food. There is almost no need to go outside campus to find the dish you want.
NeighborhoodPNU’s main campus is situated at the foot of the Geumjoeng Mountain. In other words,
the campus itself is the continuation of the mountain and people on the campus get
all the benefits provided by the mountain including fresh air, bird songs, beautiful
trees, natural streams, and hiking opportunities. Outside the main gate, you find one
of the most dynamic and exciting areas of the city, full of places flooded with young
people, including fashion stores, cafes, restaurants, cinemas and bookstores. PNU is
also adjacent to the Oncheonjang area where numerous hot spring spas are located.
Oncheonjang has gained national and international fame for the quality of its hot
spring.
