    Land Art Museum

2008 SpringEXTERIOR ENTRANCE:Identity to Fredericksburg is important, as is access to and from for pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Entrance is on highest ground. View to land art fields is framed. Peri-meter exposure to highway and to public is controlled. Sound is buffered when needed (where motherboard bldg is not). Land buffer at edge is potential land art zone.

MOTHERBOARD/HEARTHThe motherboard holds all functions but temporary and permanent art collections. It is the access to and from the facility, the monitoring, infrastructural capitol of the art grounds.Activities: enter/exit, inform/learn, rest, path-making/starting, eat, drink, meet, discuss, gather, socialize, sun screen, sun glasses, preparation.Program: [central lobby, caf, restaurant, kitchen, museum shop], [meeting rooms (2), offices for curators and administrators (5)], [classrooms (3), education administrativeoffices (4)], restrooms, auditorium for lectures/performances, mechanical, storage/maintenance (for museum interior and exterior grounds crew, garbage room/collector, transformer, chillers, loading.)Spatial Requirements:Caf/restaurant: connection to outdoor/art grounds.Museum shop: connection to entrance.Education/Administration: enjoy a view to exterior, privacy from public spaces.Auditorium: pre-function space should have connection to entrance (either in direct adjacency or in legible path to and from) pre-function space should have view. Audito-rium could have view and be a viewport to the art.

ARTERY/TENTACLE (4) (Michael Heizer, James Turell, Robert Smithson, and Walter De Maria art wings)The 4 aortic/arterial art wings branch off of the main body of the motherboard/brain/hearth. This portion ofthe journey is indoors with controlled and specific viewports to the exterior, finally culminating on a viewport which frames the coinciding land art zone.Program: This space will serve as the permanent exhibition gallery space as well as circulation/egress. North light is important and will be controlled on the roof plane through expanded metal sheathing over glass.Activities: stimulate, provoke, watch art, communicate.

DIGITS/PERISCOPE (4)The terminus of the vein path is the land | art periscope. The form of the periscope will vary with the landscape conditions that it serves. The final culmination will be a platform with directional/static views onto the coinciding land art zone.CAPILARIES (8+)Capillary paths branch out from the digit/periscope tower. These are made by the user after the land art is in place. Capillary paths are to be close-looped and are to feed into the periscope. Each land art zone therefore is experienced in a singular or isolated manner and reset/repositioned at the motherboard.

  • ISSUES- Guatemala is located in a prime location for tropical storms.

-Currently over 50% of the people living in Guatemala are using wood as the primary fuel for cooking fires.

    - soft woods such as pine are not adequate for building because of the high rate of rot, and insects.

-Insects currently live and bread in the huts of the local people, thus causing disease and epidemic.

-Since pine are so abundant in Guatemala deforestation had be-come a threat to the forest that still exists.

-Growth of population has causes more people to move out into the country and more land is needed to grow food for the gowring population.

-Malaria rates are high. In 1995, there were 23,608 new cases.

ARCHITECTURAL RESPONSE- Develop a method of preserving wood *pressurized treatment *chemical baths *using natural minerals (tung oil) *using natural resistant woods -evole a new prototype of building that uses natural materials.

-find and research a new response to using more efficient fuels for cooking.

-have the building generate energy through wind energy.

LOCATIONS AROUND THE WORLDWORLD NATURE CONSERVANCY

The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals, and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protect-ing the lands and waters they need to survive

-protecting 117 million acres around the world

-selecting the areas it seeks to preserve based on analysis of what is needed to ensure the preservation of the local plants, animals, and ecosystems

-Working to defeat deforestation in Guatemala

    - on occasions have worked with eco-tourism to raise awareness and educa-tion of the landscape.

-goal to have minimal impact on site

    -to be a self-sufficient school

-for the building to be a learning tool

    - use natural ventilation, and sunlight to full advantage.

-to be a multiage classroom that can be used by the local children to learn about their home

-designated areas of concentration, (water exhibit, biology, botany)

-have connection with the landscape by integrating outdoor spaces with learning environment.

-have the architecture give a new perspective of the land

3.9 million hectacres of forest 37% of total land is forest cover51.9% of forest land is protected

2% of forest land is loss each year to deforestation

    WOOD

    - 30 species of pine (second most of any central america country)

-volcanic activity have provided excellent soil for pine.

    - pine is used for fuel to cook fires

-used by artisans to make cheap furniture

    -undervalued material

    - theory of the Mayan people planted and harvested the pines for fuel.

-ocote is a product used for kindling

    GOALS

  • - Hemicellulose make up 40% of tree com-position.

    - By heating the wood to 200 C all the hemi-cellulose of the wood will evaporate.

    - Thus leaving no food for insects and fungus.

    - Cellulose is still left over in the wood.

    - Wood needs to be heated to 200 C for 24-36hrs

    - By heating the wood to this temperature the wood looses the ability to retain water, thus avoding rot in the wood.

    - This wood treatment does not require toxic chemicals.

    - bending wood requires for heat either through steam of pressure.

    - Steam will not be a solution since the goal is to eliminate the water in the wood, thus baking the wood is the only other treatment .

    - Dry wood laminations of veneer cut from a 4x4 pine.

    - After heating wood had gained mem-ory of mold and there was virtually no spring back.

sample of wood lamination heat bending. Baked wood for one hour at 400 o F

The rotation of louvers is decided by the function of space behind them. Classrooms have the most extent of openness, whilestorages or restrooms appear mostly opaque. On the fourth floor balcony( wood) and second floor courtyard (concrete) where highschool and kindegarden are located, the integrity of material is maintained across the facade.

Based on age levels children are distributed into three stories. The youngest age group is located at the highest portion of the site, where the classrooms sink into the ground and retaining walls help shaping courtyards, which are seen an extension of classrooms to the exterior. The middle age group rests on the second level. The views to the outside are filtered by a screen system with each mem-ber at a different but gradiant changing angle. The children on this level are also taking advantage of a strip of atrium space. With se-veral study carrel sticking out, the corridor edge is pushed back and shares part of the library program. The oldest age group occu-pies the top level, where a east-facing balcony goes all the way along the building and looks into the city, offering them a sense of broader engagement into the society.
