A tour of my not so photographic life

I am a working photographer and shoot high street fashion. It’s what I do for a living 9am - 5:30pm Monday to Friday, every week.

What gets someone into photography?

These days anyone can pick up a digital camera and declare 'I am a photographer'. Take a quick look at Gumtree ads and there are many wedding photographers overcharging for their services: £200 is an awful lot to pay some bloke to turn up at your wedding with his latest toy.

When did you first pick up a camera?

I started using a camera whilst at school. I bought my first camera when I was about 9 or 10 years old. George Best gave me a fiver and the guy in the camera shop was so sick of me standing outside his shop he let me work the rest off. I could never afford film so every press of the shutter was calculated. Every frame was precious. In my teens, I had learnt how to develop my negatives. Harry Goodwin got me a part time job delivering leaflets for his brother Kens taxi company. He would often give me a roll of film. Harry was a great person, he had the dream job. He was the photographer for Top of the Pops.

That very expensive roll of film in the back of my camera always determined my photography, there was no click, click, click, delete that you have these days.

My dad was a well-known boxer and had many famous friends. I was not allowed to get a shot of any of them sat in our living room. I did take some images of Henry Cooper, Alan Minter and some others.

What happens if your home catches fire?

You lose everything, and I mean everything. These days you can back your images up on hard drives and cloud devices. If you only have your images saved on your laptop and it's stolen, you lose all your images. I lost many in a house fire.

On leaving school, I was forced into a factory job (none of that college or university for me). It was another ten years before I was to take time out and study art.

A twist was that being a panel beater by trade I qualified as a motor engineer and inspected crashed cars on a daily basis. This included taking photos of the damage. I had a camera in my hands once again...

In 2002 I met Bob Stevenson (a Fellow Royal Photographic Society) and set up a studio and asked Bob to mentor me. One of the first thing Bob did was give me a book on light. He also taught me a few things I have never seen or heard any photography teacher demonstrate or mention.

Passions?

My passions are Pin-up and car photography, and lighting. I love lighting. Lighting is the instrument that through creativity allows you to tell a story.

Lighting Techniques

Here’s a fun set with Romanian glamour model Georgiana, photographed at Manchester’s Millwood Photographic Studio.

It’s a fantastic studio that I would recommend to any photographer. Every inch of space can be utilised for photo opportunities. Downstairs, the main feature is ‘the white room’ featuring a large expanse of white wall and infinity cove. Walk through a door into the next room and there are other sets to choose from. Upstairs, there is a large four-poster bed, which can be moved around on castors; a leather sofa and chairs; a piano; stone feature wall and colorama paper

backdrops. Lots to work with and well laid out.

This set was shot on the four-poster bed, over which I draped some white netting. A couple of Bowens studio flash-heads were placed behind the netting, either side of the bed to create an even white backdrop (see lighting diagram). Georgiana was lit with two more Bowens flash-heads – fitted with a small softbox for the main light and a large softbox placed behind the camera position for fill.

Sometimes a prop, if used well, can add an extra dimension to a photograph. As a rule, I’m not a lover of cliché props such as ‘silly’ hats, cigarette holders, fans, guns, etc (I’m sure you know the type of glamour images I mean). But Georgiana suggested a pearl necklace and, as you can see from the photos, it added a fun element to the shoot.

He is mainly known as a glamour photographer, having been involved in glamour model photography over the last 15 years. Studio one is a versatile and naturally lit room covering some 1800 square feet. With a stunning stone feature wall, the studio is customisable to your own requirements. As well as the usual standard set up there are many props and photographic opportunities within this space to ensure that the diverse nature of

the studio will meet all your creative requirements

Four Poster in Studio 1

With a specially reinforced floor this studio is equipped to house cars and motorbikes. Props include a four poster bed, antique farm cart, leather chesterfield suite, Victorian piano,, rocking horse, antique sewing machine, buffet bar type sets plus many other props too numerous to mention.

Studio two is a newly renovated white room with a double ended infinity cove.

In studio three we offer a number of ever-changing sets. At the moment, these include a barn set, Mediterranean set, Victorian wash-room and an army themed set.

We have a private make-up room with en-suite WC facilities and a fully equipped kitchen where complimentary refreshments are always available. In addition we have a large selection of models outfits available at no extra cost to yourself. If you would be interested in studio days we can arrange them at special rates- we have a growing list of models on our directory and a resident makeup artist available for hire or alternatively I can even arrange time for print models/makeup artists to keep costs down.

Mediterranean set in studio 3

For a special rate of only £185 you can have your very own model night in our studio inclusive of the hire of 3 models from our directory and FREE lighting tuition (if you so may require it) from our Head Photographer Paul. Our nights run from 7.30pm until 10.30pm on any evening you wish.

All you need to do is bring your camera and we will do the rest to ensure you get the most from your time at the studio. We have a dedicated car park and are easily accessible being only 10 minutes from junction 23 of the M60 and offer great access for customers from Yorkshire too as we are situated only a couple of miles from the Woodhead Pass. Also Stalybridge Train station is a mere 3 minutes’ drive from our studio and we can even pick you up from the station is you require.

I started going to Millwood Photography Studio about September to an Andrew Appleton workshop and I when the next Thursday to a group evening where they had dancers in for the photography group, then there's been another evening with burlesque dancing, body paint, cars, motorbikes and more. I've been there regular, Paul and Jamie, they always make me feel welcome and I feel at home there.

It's a fantastic environment in an old but newly refurbished building with lots of space, old wood beams, old stone walls, large white room and lots of props. I've been to other studios but this is one is most probably the best one.

Another trip to Millwood for the day, this time for a body painting shoot. As ever Paul and Jamie were hospitable ensuring brews were available and helping out. The day included four models in different styles of body paint, perfectly suited to the many shooting areas around the studio. As a venue it has everything a model or photographer needs.

Using your own makeup artist? Then feel free to get your model prepared for your shoot in our fully appointed make-up room for only £10 per hour.

Are you a wedding photographer perhaps and you need a venue to meet your clients? Our comfortable reception area is an ideal place to bring your potential customers. For a nominal fee of only £10 per hour you may make use of the plush surroundings of Millwood.

In addition we can also offer portrait photographers the opportunity to use our facilities for customer viewings. Once you have completed your shoot at the studio you can invite your clients back for a private viewing of their images presented to them as a slide show on the big screen. This is a tried and tested method to increase sales and we can offer you use of our equipment for this for only £10 per hour.

Above all we aspire to do our uppermost to assist in any way we can to help you develop your own photographic business.

Portrait Sessions with us….. Our portrait sessions are different. We are photographers and we know how to take images that will capture you the way you want. What we really love to do is entertain our guests whilst getting the shots you want and to make your photoshoot one to remember. Our relaxed but professional approach allows a unhurried and bespoke service. Of course both customer confidentiality (that’s why you don’t see our portrait comissions splashed over social media) and professionalism come as standard. If you buy the pictures then they are yours to do with them what you wish.

Our studio is large and well appointed. Arranging a photoshoot as part of a family birthday and celebration? We can cater for small parties and arrange preshoot drinks in our comfortable Reception area. From tea and fancy cakes for your mum to Champagne on ice for a very special occasion the studio makes a plesent and memorable venue.
