Horizon High School Gymnasium Addition Thornton, Colorado Architect: H+L Architects

This $4 million project included a new gymnasium, large weight-lifting room and administrative space for the athletic facility staff. A new entrance to this facility in-corporated a Hall of Fame Lobby showcasing the school’s past athletic achieve-ments. As the area available for the new facility was land-locked by road access on three perimeters, the new gymnasium had to be built as close to the existing gymna-sium building as possible. In order to facilitate the tight site constraints the existing gymnasium masonry walls were utilized for lateral support and the new gymnasium roof was constructed of steel trusses spanning the long, 120 ft direction. Personal experience of Julian Lineham at Loris.

Kent Denver Science Building Cherry Hills Village, Colorado Architect: Hutton Ford Architects

The Kent Denver Science Building is a $4.4 million addition and renovation to Kent Denver’s existing science build-ing. The project included a two-story steel framed wing addition to the sci-ence building, a two-story link structure to the main school building, and a one-and-a half story gallery space with an astrometric lab entry tower. The design solutions were a result of extensive brainstorming sessions with the architect to create exposed struc-tural elements throughout the building. The astrometric lab tower’s conical roof is designed using built-up 2-1/2” deep steel radial members that meet at a compression ring near the roof apex. This ring supports the glass lens which focuses the sun’s light onto the tower walls. The space is used as a calendar and clock to within a one minute accu-racy. CSU ATS/CIRA Research Addition Fort Collins, Colorado Architect: Aller Lingle Architects

Additional research space in these departments on the Foothills Campus drove the need for a three-story build-ing addition. For ease of operations the new addition was located adjacent to, and linked to the existing Atmospheric Research building with an enclosed walkway. The project’s location on the west side of Fort Collins adjacent to the foothills meant it was exposed to high wind conditions. The structural solution for this $2.5 million addition, in a diffi-cult to access and exposed location, was a structural steel cross-braced frame. The building foundation utilized caissons and grade beams as the sub-surface soils had a very high swell po-tential. The walkway was constructed of steel moment frames. Personal experience of Julian Lineham at Loris.

CU Macky Auditorium Investigation Boulder, Colorado Client: University of Colorado, Boulder

The historic Macky Auditorium, con-structed between approximately 1905 and 1920, had developed cracks along its south facade. The University com-missioned a structural investigation of the facade as part of a first phase study to determine the cause of the cracking. A second phase of study then included the remainder of the auditorium and backstage areas. The studies produced reports which included extensive field mapping of the existing cracks through-out the building. A survey monitoring regime to benchmark data for elevation control, crack-width monitoring, and geotechnical piezometer groundwater levels over a period of a year was rec-ommended. Personal experience of Julian Lineham at Loris.

Information Technology Center Fort Collins, Colorado Architect: Aller Lingle Architects

The Poudre Valley School District needed additional space for it’s information tech-nology and media programs. This was achieved by both re-modeling an existing pre-engineered metal building, and by building a load-bearing masonry addition that cloaked the old building and presented an attractive façade to the facility. The new entry was designed with north facing clerestory windows. Julian’s suggested using exposed steel tension rod braced trusses to support the roof. This introduced a technology feel that reflected this building’s function. Personal experience of Julian Lineham at Loris.

Lincoln Building, The Naropa Institute Boulder, Colorado Architect: Hartronft Fauri Architects

Built as an elementary school in 1903, the Lincoln Building is currently owned by The Naropa Institute, which uses it both for administrative and classroom purposes. It is a focal point of Naropa’s Arapahoe Road campus. The building has been extensively reconfigured in its interior layout and exterior ele-vation at various stages since its original construction. Julian’s extensive historic renovation experience was used to produce a Historic Structures Assessment report on the building’s existing condition in order to apply for State funding. The proposed renovation will include re-building the original bell tower; strengthening required to accommodate code required floor loadings, upgrading the building to comply with ADA requirements and determining whether the roof attic can be remodeled to ac-commodate useful office or storage uses. The assessment report included a de-scription of the existing structural systems, an assessment of their condition and a preservation plan with associated probable costs that prioritized any remedial struc-tural repairs. An assessment of the adequacy of the existing foundations was per-formed using the proposed loads related to the change of occupancy and potential attic renovation.
