A s a technical university with a unique profile, Montanuniversität Leoben claims a special position in both the Austrian and internati-

onal academic landscape. The study programmes offered - with their specific focus areas - can only be pursued in Leoben. As a result, Montanuniversi-tät graduates are amongst the most sought-after academics of all.As one the smallest universities in Austria, Mon-tanuniversität offers students an outstandingly good infrastructure and the best possible attention from academic staff. Due to its comfortable size, students benefit from the close cooperation with their lecturers, and any problems can be solved swiftly and efficiently. For many years, the University‘s academic excellen-ce and popularity has been documented by a num-ber of rankings and surveys (e. g. FORMAT magazine, Universum Talent Research, trendence Graduate Barometer).

First year of common studiesThe study courses are based on the value-added lifecycle, starting with the exploration and extracti-on of raw materials, followed by fields such as me-tallurgy, high-performance materials, process- and production engineering, and complemented by en-vironmental engineering and recycling. Montanuni-versität Leoben is strongly committed to integrating the concept of sustainability into the value-added cycle. The range of studies is complimented by mul-tidisciplinary fields such as Industrial Energy Tech-nology and Industrial Logistics. The first year of studies, as an introductory phase for guidance and orientation, is almost the same for all students. As a result, students can switch study pro-

grammes seamlessly at the end of the first year wi-thout losing any time. In these first two semesters, particular attention is given to the basic subjects, and all first-year students are brought to a uniform academic level. In the beginning the curriculum co-vers the following subjects: physics, mathematics, computer applications and programming, chemistry, and mechanics. These courses are held in German.

Available degreesAll courses grant a Bachelor of Science degree after seven semesters. This is followed by a more in-depth Masters course (four semesters, depending on the programme) and a subsequent Masters thesis. Upon successful completion of their graduate studies, stu-dents receive the academic title of “Diplomingeni-eur“, which is equivalent to the qualification of a Master of Science. Afterwards, students can opt for a doctoral degree (six semesters). During their studies, all students are required to complete a six-month internship at a company that is relevant to their fields of studies.

Excellent career prospectsMontanuniversität has always been closely associ-ated with industry. Many projects are in cooperation with various companies, so students are integrated into a network which provides them with a head-start into the professional world from a very early stage. Due to the strong hands-on style of instruc-tion, students are always kept abreast of the latest developments and rapidly find themselves at home in their vocations. With their expertise and unique profile, graduates from Leoben are in great demand all over the world.

“Montanuniversität is an open-minded, international and value-based institu-

tion that features a unique profile. It is located in an attractive high-tech

region with global networks to industry and research, and it is dedicated

to the unity of excellent teaching and research.“

Added-value for the future

The entire (material) culture of human beings is based on raw materials and the processing of these into products. People‘s hunger for raw materials continues to grow, with estimates in-dicating that consumption will at least double over the next 30 years. The implications of this growing consumption of materials are huge, especially in an ecological sense, making it all the more im-portant to handle raw materials carefully and to increase energy and resource efficiency. The first step towards this is to continually improve the methods used to locate, extract and process raw materials. Montanuniver-sität has been leading the way in this area since it was founded in 1840 by Archduke Johann. The development of new technologies used here requires many new materials. Leoben‘s material scientists develop new kinds of materials which can withstand extremely heavy use and, for ex-ample, coatings which extend the lifespan of aeroplane parts.

The ongoing success of these synthetic materials is ensured by their many advantages – they are light, versatile and in the fu-ture will also be biogenic. Mechanical engineering at the Mon-tanuniversität is focused on optimising the use of these different materials. All processes along the value added cycle are con-nected to the use of energy and transport; lecturers and students of Industrial Energy Technology and Industrial Logistics research the optimisation of these. Industrial Environmental Protection focuses on minimising the impact of side effects on the environment during production. The residual waste which accrues over the course of production and at the end of service lives was always taken to landfill in the past. Industry and society is now rethinking this, however: What used to be considered waste can now be regarded as a secondary raw material and can flow back into the product cycle.

other things and address natural (e.g. landslide) and artificial (e.g. landfill sites) georisks. In resource geology, you learn to investigate de-posits of petroleum, coal, gold etc. and evaluate their financial and industrial use.

The Masters programme in Applied Geosciences – with English as the language of instruction – pro-vides an intensification and supplementation of the specialist knowledge acquired from the Bachelors programme. The modular structure of this study pro-gramme allows for specialisations in the following focus areas: Applied Geophysics, Petroleum Geos-cience und Economic, Environmental and Techni-cal Geology.

What can I expect after my studies? This comprehensive study programme means that a wide variety of career opportunities will be open to you: Geoscientists across the world work in mi-ning and raw materials companies and the petro-leum industry, as well as engineering offices, cons-truction companies and public authorities, where they look at issues such as landfill sites, recycling, site remediation and water supply. Graduates from Montanuniversität Leoben have a clear competitive advantage in the employment market, given their outstanding engineering science education, and find superb jobs all over the world.

W ill the water supply remain secure in the future? Where can we find more crude oil? Is substrate stable enough to build a road

on top of it? How and where can waste be stored without causing further damage?Geoscientists have an amazingly broad range of knowledge: they look for solid, liquid and gaseous raw materials, analyse their composition, investiga-te and clean up soil and water pollution or run subs-trate surveys for construction projects. Geosciences therefore hold the key to one of the greatest future challenges: society‘s need for a sustainable supply of raw materials, power and water and the protection of the Earth‘s complex systems.

What skills and interests do I need? For geoscientists, the Earth is a gigantic outdoor la-boratory – a love of nature is therefore an absolute must. As part of fieldwork, you will collect quanti-ties of data that you will then evaluate. You should therefore be interested in EDP and bring with you a desire for accuracy and the ability to understand complex connections. If you also love learning about foreign languages and cultures, you‘re ready for this exciting programme.

Mineral Resources Engineering

M ineral resources have been extracted and used by mankind since the Stone Age and are a vital part of 21st century life.

Whether in a water glass, toothpaste, a mobile pho-ne or a road tunnel – raw materials form the basis for a huge range of products and construction, and therefore have a major economic impact. Global demand is therefore constantly on the rise, as is demand for experts who can handle these valuable natural resources.

What skills and interests do I need? You need to be interested in and passionate about technology and natural science. As raw materials engineers are used all over the world, you should also be prepared to learn foreign languages and gain experience abroad. If you‘re enthusiastic and love working in a team and taking on responsibility, you will enjoy the exciting and varied challenges in a career as a raw materials engineer.

What can I expect during my studies? In the Bachelors programme, you will spend the first four semesters learning general technical principles. The next three semesters offer comprehensive spe-cialist training covering the entire process: from the extraction of solid mineral raw materials to prepa-ration and refinement right up to the production of construction materials, ceramic products and tunnel construction.

Masters Course Mining & TunnellingBlasting up or mining? How does a mountain move when a tunnel is being built inside? Students explore a wide variety of subjects and may pursue one of the following focus areas: Mining, Geotechnology und Tunnelling and Raw Materials and Energy Systems. Geotechnical exploration, planning and installing of underground structures (e. g. mines, tunnels) as well as surface and subsurface extraction of mine-ral resources will be discussed. Students learn about important safety issues, the heavy machinery used for mining and tunnelling, and how to plan, mana-ge and calculate costs for such large-scale projects. Students receive hands-on training in the geotech-nical lab and at "Zentrum am Berg (ZaB)“, a unique underground research centre that allows for rese-

arch in a real-life setting. Sustainability is of great importance to the industry, thus the recultivation of former mining sites is also part of the curriculum. Due to the international nature of the course, Eng-lish is the primary language of instruction.

Masters Course Raw Materials EngineeringHow does a massive block of stone turn into fine ce-ment powder? Which building materials can tolerate temperatures as high as 1,400 degree Celsius in a blast furnace? One focus area of the Masters course is the proces-sing of mineral resources into high-quality materials by means of physical and chemical processes. Besides processing primary resources (e. g. ore, salt, coal etc.), the processing and recycling of electronic waste, slag, or material excavated from tunnels is gaining im-portance as energy and resources can be conserved. Furthermore, students learn about characteristics, the production and application of building materials (e. g. refractories for blast furnaces, ceramics, glass, cement, etc.)

What can I expect after my studies?Mineral Resources Engineers lead mining operations in Austria and all over the world, are highly sought after as tunnel construction experts, work on the pro-duction of refractory materials, construction materi-als, glass and ceramics and refine raw materials into high-tech materials.

It is not just our homes which are energy-depen-dent – industry accounts for a large proportion of the fossil fuel and renewable energy that is con-sumed in the world. Environmentally-friendly and cost-effective provision, transport and use of ener-gy – in the form of electrical, mechanical and ther-mal energy – is key to all industrial processes. As the need for energy is rapidly increasing world-wide, there is an urgent need to provide interested and responsible young people with a programme of study aimed specifically at energy technology in order to identify potential savings and increase the utilisation of these. Innovative technologies will need to be developed to enable us to use our pla-net‘s resources in a sustainable and effective way and secure our energy supply for the future.

What skills and interests do I need? With energy needs increasing and raw materials dwindling, as an energy technician the challenges you face are complex. Your job is to create ener-gy supply solutions that are both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. As the programme of study is very much interdisciplinary, you should be interested in a wide range of areas. If you find it easy to find strategic approaches to solving problems and enjoy working in a team to manage tasks, this programme of study will open up great new opportunities for you in the future.

What can I expect during my studies? On the Bachelors programme of study, you will ac-quire a technical knowledge base and explore issu-es in the fields of energy and process technology, exhaust gas treatment and environmental analysis, such as: How do you plan a power plant? Is it possi-ble to simulate a combustion process? Does residual plant waste from agriculture provide enough energy as an alternative fuel? How do I develop a regional energy concept for the use of renewable energies? Business administration forms a major part of this programme of study, and you will acquire energy management, energy market and energy law exper-

tise. On the Masters programme of study, you will deepen your knowledge in the areas of energy pro-vision, energy use, energy process engineering and energy management.

What can I do after my studies? There is high demand for energy technology engi-neers with extensive knowledge in industry all over the world. The studies will prepare you for jobs with a technical focus in the fields of research, product development, production, planning, sales, commis-sioning and systems operation and maintenance. Typical fields of activity include

general energy supply demands of industry – with a special focus on sustainability and environmental considerations development of renewable and alternative ener-gy sources high-efficiency energy conversion and energy use development and utilisation of innovative energy technologies energy networks economic and ecological assessment of energy efficiency energy management.

Considering that the worldwide demand for energy is continuously rising, it is of

great importance to provide students with the necessary skills to identify and uti-

lise energy saving potentials in the field of energy technology.

I nnovative materials can change the world. Ideas can only be realised if suitable modern materi-als are developed, no matter whether this means

highly heat-resistant components for exploring ou-ter space, self-cleaning surfaces that mirror nature or bio-compatible implants for the human body. Climate protection also comes down to selecting the right materials. By using intelligent materials, you can achieve maximum effects with minimal use of raw materials and energy. For example, in materials science you can develop coatings for car or plane components that cause less friction and resistance, thereby saving fuel and CO2.Materials engineers also test materials. Students at Montanuniversität have developed a test procedure for determining the strength of ceramic balls that are used in modern wind power plants. This method has already been implemented within the industry.

What skills and interests do I need? Why are ceramics brittle? Does aluminium float on water? Why does water roll off a lotus plant? Can alloys have a memory? If you want to find out how modern materials work, you need to be interested in technology and the na-tural sciences. You also need to be curious, creative and think in a joined-up way. Montanuniversität of-fers you an extremely diverse education so that one day you will be able to develop materials to cope with the highest of demands.

What can I expect during my studies? The Bachelors programme runs for seven semesters. The first four semesters focus on learning the basic principles of natural science and engineering sub-jects. Students will also learn the basics about wor-king with metallic and ceramic materials. In semesters 5-7, the focus will be on the materials themselves: metals and their alloys, ceramic materi-als, glasses, plastics, composites and multi-purpose materials such as semiconductor materials. The core focus will be on solid-state physical un-derstanding of the material classes, materials tes-ting and modern test and analysis methods. Stu-dents finish the course in the seventh semester with a Bachelors thesis on a topic related to materials.Depending on their fields of interest, students can

then choose to expand their knowledge in a specific field in a Masters programme. Montanuniversität can tailor the course to students‘ interests, whether they lie in metallic and ceramic high-performance materials, electronic materials, multi-purpose mate-rials, nanotechnology, bio-materials or the fracture behaviour of materials.

O ne material has truly come to the fore in every area of life in recent years: plastic. Without plastic, there would be no compu-

ters, smartphones or functional sports clothing. Polymers has revolutionised medical technology and allowed us to build lighter and more energy-ef-ficient vehicles. Its processing versatility and wide range of properties is like no other material. Plastic truly deserves to be known as the "21st century ma-terial“.Plastic greentastic: Plastics and environmental pro-tection are not a contradiction in terms. Quite the opposite: Polymeric materials help save energy and have a better eco-balance than many other mate-rials. If you replaced all polymeric materials in the EU with other suitable materials, total energy re-quirements would go up by 57 percent. Polymers are also environmentally friendly in terms of service life. Over 50 percent of the polymeric material used in Austria are recyclable and the rest can be converted into energy via thermal recycling.

What skills and interests do I need?Have you always wanted to know how a smartphone was made? Do you wonder what stresses plastics in aeroplanes can cope with? Metallurgy

H ave you used a mobile phone, drunk from a can or ridden a bike today? Then welcome to the world of metallurgy!

Metals are used in every area of our daily lives. This course is therefore particularly diverse and exten-sive: from the extraction of metals from ore to the development and innovative moulding of a product, metallurgy covers a lot of different processes. One particular focus is recycling: scrap metal and reco-vered valuable metals are processed into new pro-ducts, in order to protect resources and save energy. The Montanuniversität metallurgists can therefore use their knowledge to make a fundamental contri-bution to the prosperity and progress of our society.

What skills and interests do I need?Metallurgists are literally bursting with creativity. They design products and find innovative solutions to make production processes both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. You need to have a pas-sion for technology and natural science – particular-ly mathematics and chemistry – as well as enjoying analytical and interdisciplinary thinking.

What can I expect during my studies? Metallurgy is an extremely diverse science – buil-ding on the principles you learn in the first four semesters, you then go into greater depth in the following areas:

Ferrous and steel metallurgy: Iron is the heaviest metal by weight and is used for many purposes, often as the ferrous alloy steel. You will look at iron extraction and material development for cars, medical technology, the construction of a skyscraper and much more. Non-ferrous metallurgy: This module deals with the extraction, processing and materials engineering of metals such as aluminium, copper, zinc and high-tech materials such as titanium, magnesium, rare earths and desirable precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum. These are essential for the manufacturing of compu-ters, smartphones or hybrid cars. Foundry technology: Metals are processed to form end products via various foundry proce-dures. The aim is to produce a high-quality, flawless cast part. Quality is the decisive factor

for a product‘s service life and is extremely important in many sectors, e.g. the aerospace or automotive industries. Metal forming comprises a number of production processes in which metals are rendered into ano-ther form with e. g. a uniform micro structure of only a few grams or even up to a hundred tons. Simulation of metallurgical process allows you to optimise processes, develop new production methods (and avoiding expensive tests), and manage future processes and process chains. Industrial management: Metallurgists not only need technical knowledge, but also need to understand business so that they can master industrial business issues and management tasks.

In addition, the course focuses on fields such as combustion technology, high temperature and heat technology as well as environmental technology.

What can I expect after my studies?Typical activities range from the development of new procedures, materials and products to the plan-ning of production plants or the optimisation of business or energy processes. Leoben graduates are in demand all over the world in both management and research. The course is unique in Austria, which makes graduates highly sought after in industry and business.

Metallurgy is the science of the development, manufacture, and processing of

metallic materials from the technical processing, economical, and ecological

points of view. This also includes the further processing into components and

process integrated recycling.

C reativity and innovation are the drivers for mechanical engineering. Deep-sea robots that extract ore from a depth of 2,000 me-

tres? Components with a design that saves emissi-ons? A fish used as the template for an aerodynamic car? There are no limits to your ideas. From planning and construction to selecting the right materials to pro-duction itself – you are the one in charge when it comes to development and implementation as an end product.

Where does mining come in?Mining mechanical engineers are under great pres-sure, in the most literal sense of the word. For exam-ple, the load pressing down on a hauler (image) in a mine that is transporting around 75 tons of stone is far greater than the load on a normal car. Alongside the principles of general mechanical engineering, this course at Montanuniversität therefore offers specialist knowledge for materials technology and production.

What skills and interests do I need?Mechanical engineering is a classic engineering discipline. A passion for technology and the natural sciences, abstract thinking, creativity and the ability to formulate and implement ideas all form the ideal basis for successful studies at the "best“ university in Austria ("Format“ magazine survey 2014).

What can I expect during my studies? The course provides comprehensive technical training so that students can follow a product or component from the initial idea right up to use in practice. The focus in the first four semesters of the Bachelors programme is on natural and engineering sciences. In the fifth to seventh semesters, students then build up a solid specialist education in the most important mechanical engineering disciplines. The required Bachelors thesis is generally set up to be as interdisciplinary as possible, in order to pro-mote creativity and students‘ ability to work as part of a team and think in a joined-up way.The Masters programme offers unique opportunities to build on basic skills in materials, manufacturing technology and industrial automation. From the

extraction of raw materials and their preparation and use as high-tech materials to recycling – mini-ng mechanical engineers work with other research areas at Montanuniversität to find mechanical engi-neering solutions for the most varied of tasks.

What can I expect after my studies?Make your ideas a reality as a product engineer, plant engineer, process developer, planning engi-neer/constructor or site manager in technical ma-nagement, sales, quality management or research. The field is wide open for mechanical engineering graduates, with fantastic career opportunities and high entry-level salaries.

The field of activity for mechanical engineers is particularly diverse. It includes

Industrial Logistics

In our globalised world, products, services and infor-mation are often created across different continents and yet their components still have to come together at exactly the right time. Industrial logisticians are responsible for getting the right products ready at the right time in the right place with the right le-vel of quality and in the right quantities – and the customer is always right! 'Just in time‘ means that components from subcontractors will be delivered directly to the assembly belt only when required; the timing needs to be as accurate as possible to save money. As such, logistics play a particularly signi-ficant role in a company‘s success. They represent the link between procurement, production and the consumer.

What skills and interests do I need? How do goods, information or energy move around the world? What makes a perfect production process in a business? How does an online retailer manage to deliver goods within 24 hours? To achieve success in this field of study, you must be interested in business administration and technical processes, but also have an interest in the field of communication and information technology. As a future industrial logistician, you should be happy to work on projects as a team.

What can I expect during my studies? On the Bachelor programme of study, you will ac-quire a scientific and technical knowledge base and focus on the following areas:

Logistics and process management Business administration Information technology

On the Masters programme, which lasts for four semesters, you can deepen your knowledge in two further specialist areas, choosing from the follow-ing:

Logistics management Computational optimisation Automation Logistics systems engineering

What can I expect after my studies? As an industrial logistician with a powerful com-

bination of business and technical skills, you are armed to face any challenge that the markets can throw at you. Typical employment sectors include materials ma-nagement, supply chain planning and control (sup-ply chain management), industrial procurement, organisation and process management, information technology and waste disposal. Your skills will also be useful to companies working with warehouse au-tomation, transportation and conveying technology and container management. These sectors include the heavy industry, raw materials industry, electro-nics industry and logistics service providers.

Industrial logistics represents the link between procurement markets (supplier),

production facilities (plants), and sales markets (customers). Future challenges

lie in the increasing complexity and rapidity of international business activity.

Industrial Environmental Protection & Process Engineering

T he effects of human activity on nature and the environment are becoming increasingly evident. On an almost daily basis, we face

media reports of industrial accidents with dramatic consequences. Although major catastrophes remain an exception, the production of everyday products is always linked to ecological consequences, making the work of engineers and technicians essential, as they aim to keep the side effects of industrial acti-vities as minor as possible.Studying Industrial Environmental Protection and Process Engineering equips you with the founda-tions for finding solutions for environmentally com-patible and cost efficient production methods.

What skills and interests do I need? You should have an interest in natural and technical processes, be curious about how things work, and be passionate about solving environmental challenges. Moreover, you should be able to apply your in-depth knowledge across the disciplines. If you also possess over creative problem-solving skills and a certain technical aptitude, then you have what it takes to study Industrial Environmental Protection and Pro-cess Engineering.

What can I expect during my studies? A waste manager or process engineer applies knowledge from other disciplines on a daily basis. These include chemistry, mechanical engineering, maths, laboratory analysis, environmental law, to-xicology, business administration, and computer si-mulation. You will become acquainted with most of these disciplines throughout your Bachelors degree. Your Masters degree gives you the opportunity of building and expanding your knowledge and specialising in either process engineering or waste management.A process engineer focuses on plant construction for treating pollutants, emissions, sewage and wa-ste that form during industrial production. Therefore, manufacturing processes and the effects of emissi-ons as a by-product are studied in depth. The appropriate disposal and recycling of residues and waste are the main concerns waste managers face. Products can become part of a cycle. If, for ex-ample, by-product or waste emissions can be used in

the manufacturing process of another product. Or, if waste-management is practiced at the stage of pro-duct design.

What can I expect after my studies?Environmental technology plays a key role in almost all industrial branches, meaning that you can work in all kinds of industries. Example could be the paper-, cement-, petroleum-, food-, iron and steel industry, power plants or environmental technology itself (sewage and exhaust fume treatment, renewable energies, raw materials, consulting, environmental authorities, etc.). Due to the broad spectrum of disciplines covered over the course of your studies, you have the advan-tage of choosing the industry in which you wish to have a career in.
