1. Read the article and number the places 1–5 in the order you would like to visit them.

Five places to see before you dieOur reporters have travelled the globe and compiled a list of the most amazing places to visit,

from natural landmarks, ancient structures, to modern man-made wonders.

Maldives Maldives is the smallest Asian country and the Earth’s lowest country, with an average ground level of 1.5 metres above sea level. It consists of 1,192 coral islands spread over 90,000 square kilometres in the Indian Ocean, near the equator. The place is a true paradise with its blue seas, white sandy beaches and palm trees. The coral reef around the islands is home to sea turtles, whales, dolphins and over 1,000 species of fi sh.

The Grand CanyonThe Grand Canyon is a canyon carved by the Colorado River in the state of Arizona, in the USA. You can study the Earth’s geological history in the colourful layers of rock exposed by the river. The Grand Canyon is massive; it is 446 kilometres long, 29 kilometres wide at its widest place and 1.6 kilometres deep. Travellers seeking adventure can hike, ride a mule or take a river trip through the canyon.

Angel FallsAngel Falls is a waterfall in Venezuela, South America. It is the world’s highest waterfall, with a height of 979 metres. Although Angel Falls is the country’s top tourist attraction, it is not easy to reach. The waterfall is located in the jungle with no roads. Visitors must take an aeroplane, then go on a river trip and fi nally hike in the jungle to the lookout point for Angel Falls.

The Great Wall of ChinaThe Great Wall of China is a series of fortifi cations built at different periods of time, with the fi rst sections constructed over 2,000 years ago. It meanders from east to west of the country, across deserts, mountains and grasslands. The wall is nearly 9,000 kilometres long. You can go hiking on some sections of the wall or you can take a chairlift. If you are lucky, you can see wild animals that live in the habitats along the wall: bears, giant pandas or even a tiger.

DubaiDubai is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates. It is famous for its amazing architectural projects, such as Burj Al Arab – a 7 star hotel shaped like a sailboat, Burj Khalifa – the tallest building in the world, measuring over 828 metres and the World Islands – artifi cial islands constructed in the shape of a world map. In Dubai you can also explore the desert by taking a jeep or a camel tour, and you can try some unusual sports such as sand skiing or sand boarding.

STUDENT A

Dialogue 1 Student A

You’re on a package holiday in Spain. You’re very unhappy about the hotel. The room overlooks a large construction site. The portion sizes in the restaurant are too small and you are always hungry. The cleaners wake you up at 6 am every day. Complain to the travel agent representative at the hotel.


You work at an airport. A tourist complains to you about a missing bag. Point out that people should not put valuable objects in their checked-in luggage. Respond to the complaint. Explain where the bag may be.


You’re on holiday in Italy with your friends. You’re having dinner in a restaurant. The menu is only in Italian, your tablecloth is dirty and you’ve been waiting for the waiter for 30 minutes. The music is too loud and you can’t hear your friends. Complain to the manager.


You work in a small clothes shop in Thailand. You sell very cheap clothes. They’re very comfortable. A tourist complains about the trousers you sold. Respond to the complaint.


You’re on holiday and you’re travelling by train. There’s a parent with a 6-year-old child sitting opposite. The boy keeps playing a loud game on his/her console and has put his feet up on your seat. He’s also spilled orange juice on your trousers. Complain to the parent.



STUDENT B

Dialogue 1 Student B

You’re a travel agent representative at a hotel in Spain. A tourist complains to you about the hotel. You should defend your company and the hotel. Respond to the complaint.


You’re a tourist at an airport and you’re coming back from your holiday. Your checked-in luggage is lost. You had a laptop, an expensive camera and some souvenirs in the missing bag. Complain to an airport employee.


You’re the manager of a restaurant in Italy. A tourist complains to you about the restaurant and the service. You should defend your restaurant. Respond to the complaint.


You’re on holiday in Thailand. You bought a pair of green trousers from a local shop last week. Unfortunately they dyed your legs green. You’ve tried everything, but you can’t wash off the dye. Now you can’t go to the beach, because everybody will stare at your green legs. Go back to the shop and make a complaint.


You have four young children and you’re exhausted. You’re now travelling by train with only one child – your 6-year-old son. You’re happy you can fi nally relax on the train. A passenger complains to you about your child. Respond to the complaint.
