Confidence-building strategies

By Michael Grose

Children with healthy self-esteem and self-confidence

learn more, achieve more and are generally happier

than those with low confidence levels. Building

children’s and young people’s confidence is complex.

It’s more than being a praise robot and heaping

positive comments on a child at the first sign of them

doing something well.

Here are five practical strategies that you can use to

build real self-confidence in children of all ages:

DIARY DATES

Feb 20 School Council Meeting

Feb 21 Open Classrooms (5.30pm to 6.30pm)

March 9 & 10 Earth Ed (Grade 3)

March 13 Labour Day (Public Holiday)

March 20-24 Swimming (Grade 5 & 6)

March 23 School Photos

March 29 Fun Run

March 31 Last day of Term 1 (2.30pm dismissal)

FOCUS: SAFETY

This week students are thinking and speaking about

safe behaviours in the classroom and in the

playground. Students are focusing on being buddies

to their fellow students in order for our school to be

as safe as it can be.

NEWSLETTER NO. 3 Thursday 16th February 2017

1. Model confident thinking

Children soak up the language, thinking and behaviour

of those closest to them in their environment. Parents

and teachers, play a part in modelling confident

thinking and behaviour particularly when it comes to

tackling new activities, including letting children hear

positive self-talk.

2. Focus on effort & improvement

Current thinking shows that people who believe that

they can increase their intelligence through effort and

challenge actually get smarter and do better in school,

work, and life over time. One way to develop a growth

mindset is to focus your language on effort and

improvement rather than on the results of what they do.

3. Praise strategy

While effort is key for achievement, it's not the only

thing. Children need to try new strategies and seek

input from others when they're stuck. They need this

repertoire of approaches – not just sheer effort – to

learn and improve. It helps too to focus language on

better and smarter ways on improving.

4. Develop self-help skills from an early age

A child’s self-esteem comes as a result of his or her

successes and accomplishments. The most important

competencies to build confidence are basic self-help

skills. These form the building blocks upon which

other competencies such as organisational skills and

many social skills are formed.

5. Give them real responsibility

From a young age start giving children responsibility

for some aspects of their lives. By giving children

responsibility for many aspects of their lives we are

sending a powerful message that we think they are

capable. Also they are learning the skills necessary to

care for themselves.

FROM THE OFFICE

SCHOOL FEES

Family Statements have gone home this week with the

students. School fees for 2017 are $75.00 per student

for the year which covers student essential education

items such as stationery, art supplies, etc. A full copy

of the Parent Payment Policy is on the school website.

At Mildura South we like to offer our students the

opportunity to use computer technology to enhance

their learning. We invite parents to make a donation

towards maintaining our computer technology

requirements in the school.

Eftpos is available at the office with a $10.00

minimum per transaction. The fees can also be paid by

BPAY with the BPAY code on the bottom of your

Statement.

We are more than happy for school fees, excursions

and camps to be paid by instalments throughout the

year by Bpay, Eftpos, cash or cheque.

Thank you to those families who have already paid.

STUDENT ABSENCES

Please call the office on 5023 2148 or send your email

to [email protected] before 10.00am, if

your child is going to be absent from school for the day

or longer.

LATE ARRIVALS AND EARLY DEPARTURES

If students are late to school or are leaving early,

parents/guardians are required to attend the office to

sign them in or out.

ILLNESS

If your child is showing signs of illness in the morning,

please make the necessary arrangements to keep them

at home to reduce the spreading of germs. We greatly

appreciate your assistance in this matter.

MEDICATIONS

If your child requires medication to be given at school,

an authority MUST be completed at the office. The

school cannot give a student medication unless this

authority is signed. Any medication must also be

stored at the office and not in the student’s bag or

classroom.

STUDENT BANKING

TUESDAY is banking day for the School Banking

Program. The school runs a Student Banking Program

through the Commonwealth Bank. The program is

available to all students. Students can take their

Bankbooks with money to be banked to their

classroom on Tuesday of each week and they will be

sent to the office for processing. Students

must have a Commonwealth Bank account to

participate in this program. Bank Account applications

are available from the office.

LOST AND FOUND

In the first week of school we have had two pairs of

children’s glasses handed in to the office. If your child

is missing a pair of glasses please come into the office

to check if they belong to you.

Chris, Sharyn and Karen
