PRINCIPAL’S NEWS Open Classroom Evening
This week you will have received an information
newsletter from your child’s year level team of
teachers. The teachers construct this newsletter to
inform parents of: expectations, events and particular
resources that may be required. It is another way of
connecting school with home to ensure all students are
successful.
Next Tuesday on February 21 from 5.30-6.30pm the
Mildura South School Community are looking forward
to opening up classrooms so that students can
introduce their teacher to their parents and show their
parents their new classroom.
See you then!
Camps and School Excursion Fund (CSEF)
Families who have a Health Care Card are entitled to
the Camps and School Excursion Fund which is
$125.00 per student. This money may be used for the
Swimming Program, Camps and any in school and out
of school excursions. Parents/Carers need to complete
the form each year before this money can be processed
into your child’s account. If you have not yet applied
for this and you are entitled to it, please come into the
office and see Mrs Nichols and she will help you.
Mentor Breakfast
We run a Year 6 Program called ‘Focus on One’. All
year 6 students have nominated an adult on our staff to
be their mentor. Mrs Kingsley coordinates the
program. On Thursday March 2 at 8.00am Year 6
students, their mentors and their parents/carers will all
meet to have breakfast together here at school.
Students and their mentors meet at other times during
the year for lunch or just to touch base.
Parents Club for 2017
The Parent’s Club held their AGM this week and I am
pleased to announce that Lyn Bozzi will continue on as
President, Janette Shaddock will be Vice-President and
Samara Kelly will hold the position of Secretary.
Congratulations to these three hard working parents
who continue to support our school and students. Mrs. Marie-Therese Milani

Confidence-building strategies
By Michael Grose
Children with healthy self-esteem and self-confidence
learn more, achieve more and are generally happier
than those with low confidence levels. Building
children’s and young people’s confidence is complex.
It’s more than being a praise robot and heaping
positive comments on a child at the first sign of them
doing something well.
Here are five practical strategies that you can use to
build real self-confidence in children of all ages:
DIARY DATES
Feb 20 School Council Meeting
Feb 21 Open Classrooms (5.30pm to 6.30pm)
March 9 & 10 Earth Ed (Grade 3)
March 13 Labour Day (Public Holiday)
March 20-24 Swimming (Grade 5 & 6)
March 23 School Photos
March 29 Fun Run
March 31 Last day of Term 1 (2.30pm dismissal)
FOCUS: SAFETY
This week students are thinking and speaking about
safe behaviours in the classroom and in the
playground. Students are focusing on being buddies
to their fellow students in order for our school to be
as safe as it can be.
Thursday 16th February 2017 Week 4 Term 1 There is one insert in this week’s Newsletter.
NEWSLETTER NO. 3 Thursday 16th February 2017
1. Model confident thinking
Children soak up the language, thinking and behaviour
of those closest to them in their environment. Parents
and teachers, play a part in modelling confident
thinking and behaviour particularly when it comes to
tackling new activities, including letting children hear
positive self-talk.
2. Focus on effort & improvement
Current thinking shows that people who believe that
they can increase their intelligence through effort and
challenge actually get smarter and do better in school,
work, and life over time. One way to develop a growth
mindset is to focus your language on effort and
improvement rather than on the results of what they do.
3. Praise strategy
While effort is key for achievement, it's not the only
thing. Children need to try new strategies and seek
input from others when they're stuck. They need this
repertoire of approaches – not just sheer effort – to
learn and improve. It helps too to focus language on
better and smarter ways on improving.
4. Develop self-help skills from an early age
A child’s self-esteem comes as a result of his or her
successes and accomplishments. The most important
competencies to build confidence are basic self-help
skills. These form the building blocks upon which
other competencies such as organisational skills and
many social skills are formed.
5. Give them real responsibility
From a young age start giving children responsibility
for some aspects of their lives. By giving children
responsibility for many aspects of their lives we are
sending a powerful message that we think they are
capable. Also they are learning the skills necessary to
care for themselves.
