Admission Policy & Procedures
The purpose of our admission policy is to help you through the admission process, and to help you diagnose your child’s academic level. The more relevant information we have, the more effectively we will be able to achieve this. The applicant would be required to submit the Admission Form to the Admission’s
Department with the set of documents mentioned below. Parents’ will be then called along
with the student, for a written test in English and Math. On the same day, the Principal of
the school meets the parent/s and the student.
Documents required for registration:
Transfer Certificate from the previous school (starting from grade 2)
2 photos
A copy of the child’s birth certificate either an (Original) OR a certified copy
A copy of the family book
Official copy of the student’s Report Card of the previous year ( or first semester if enrolling for second semester)
Medical Record (Grade1 + KG2 + KG1 + Nursery)+ original copy of Vaccine Card
If a student is NOT a Jordanian citizen, then please provide:
A photocopy of the child’s passport
:If a student comes from outside Jordan The student’s Report Card for the past year and their transfer paper must be certified by:
Amid East – Amman
The Ministry of Education – examination’s department – Amman
Directorate of Education – private education - Irbid
Once you submit your application, the admission process begins. Your child’s age Is the initial indication as to the appropriate class, and the admission test will either confirm this or lead to further assessment.
Admission Test
If the student registers for the first time, he/ she must set for an admission test. This will tell us if your child is below, at or above his Grade Level.
Those who are seeking admission in the second semester will be assessed using learning objectives from the current year of study. We prefer to meet students personally and discuss their interests and academic progress. This process is also essential for those who have found the admission tests difficult, for we would want to carry out a further assessment in order to place the student in the appropriate class. If possible, we like to meet both parents as well.
--After the test and the interview, you can reserve a seat. Registration fee = 250 JOD paid only once (nonrefundable).
10
Student Code of Conduct
While attending school during regular hours or during school activities, students are expected to follow these basic rules, procedures, and expectations:
1. Your first priority at school is to learn. Avoid distractions that interfere with that mission.
2. Be in the assigned place with appropriate materials, ready to work at the designated time
that class begins.
3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself and never intentionally harm another student
(See pages 21 & 22).
4. Use school appropriate language and behavior at all times while maintaining friendly and
courteous behavior.
5. Be polite and respectful (see page 11) to everyone including students, teachers,
administrators, support staff, and visitors.
6. Follow individual teacher instructions, class rules, and expectations at all times.
7. Do not be a bully (see pages 18-20). If you see someone being bullied, intervene by telling
them to stop or immediately report it to school personnel.
8. Do not become a distraction for others. Give every other student the opportunity to
maximize their potential. Encourage your fellow students.
9. School attendance and participation in class are an essential part of the educational
process. Regular attendance at school (see pages 14 & 15) is necessary for student success.
Furthermore, it allows students to achieve the maximum possible benefits from their
educational experience. All students are encouraged to be present. School attendance is
the responsibility of both parents and students.
10. Represent yourself in a manner that you will be proud of in ten years. You only get one
opportunity to get life right. Take advantage of the opportunities you have at school. They
will help you be successful throughout your life.
11. Be honest at all times.
12. Keep your school clean- no littering.
13. No re-entry to the school building during break.
11
A Policy to Promote Respect in School
Respect denotes both a positive feeling of esteem for a person and also specific actions and conducts representative of that esteem. Respect can be defined as allowing yourself and others to do and be their best.
It is the goal of American University Schools of the Middle East to create a mutually respectful atmosphere between all individuals involved within our school including administrators, teachers, staff members, students, parents, & visitors. As such, all entities are expected to remain respectful to each other at all times.
Students and teachers especially are expected to greet each other with kind words and student/teacher exchanges should be friendly, in an appropriate tone, and should remain respectful. The majority of student/teacher interaction should be positive.
All school personnel and students are expected to use the following words that show respect for another person at the appropriate times when addressing each other:
Please
Thank You
You're Welcome
Excuse Me
May I Help You
Yes Sir, No Sir or Yes Ma'am, No Ma'am Pardon Me
12
Important School Tips for Parents from the Principal
Tip #1 – Be Supportive
Tip #2 – Be Involved and Stay Involved
Every parent should know what is going on in their child’s daily school life. A parent should do the following things every day:
Ask your child how their school day went. Engage in conversation about what they learned, whom their friends are, what they had for lunch, etc.
Make sure your child has time set aside to complete homework. Be there to answer any questions or assist when needed.
Read all notes/memos sent home from the school and/or teacher. Notes are the primary form of communications between a teacher and parents. Look for them and read them to stay up-to-date on events.
Contact your child’s teacher immediately if you have any concerns. Value your child’s education and express the importance of it every single day. This is
arguably the single most valuable thing a parent can do when it comes to their child’s education. Those that value education often thrives and those that don’t often fail.
Tip #3 – Do Not Bad-Mouth the Teacher in Front of Your Child
Tip #4 – Follow Through
Children need structure and discipline and most crave it on some level. If your child makes
a mistake, then there should be consequences at school and home. This will show the child
that both the parent and school are on the same page and that they are not going to be
allowed to get away with that behavior.
Tip #5 – Do Not Take Your Child’s Word for the Truth
If your child came home from school and told you that their teacher threw a box of Kleenex at them, how would you handle it?
1. Would you instantly assume that they are telling the truth? 2. Would you call or meet the principal and demand that the teacher be removed? 3. Would you aggressively approach the teacher and make accusations? 4. Would you call and request a meeting with the teacher to ask them calmly if they could
explain what happened? If you are a parent who chooses anything other than 4, then your choice is the worst
action. Parents who take their child’s word over an adult before consulting with the adult challenge their authority. While it is entirely possible that the child is telling the truth, the teacher should be given the right to explain their side without being viciously attacked first.
13
Too many times, children leave out crucial facts, when explaining situations like this to
their parent. Children are often devious by nature, and if there is a chance they can get their teacher in trouble, then they will go for it. Parents and teachers who stay on the same page and work together alleviate this opportunity for assumptions and misconceptions because the child knows they won’t get away with it.
Tip #6 – Do Not Make Excuses for Your Child
Help us hold your child accountable. If your child makes a mistake, don’t bail them out by constantly making excuses for them. From time to time, there are legitimate excuses, but if you are constantly making excuses for your child, then you are not doing them any favors. You won’t be able to make excuses for them their whole life, so don’t let them get into that habit.
Student Discipline Practices at AUSME
The School Principal will carefully examine and weigh all evidences and make what is the
best possible way to deter the student from making the same mistake twice.
Following are types of Discipline Practices at AUSME:
Verbal Warning
Written Warning
Parent Conference
Expulsion
Detention
e.g. recess detention or after school detention such as (writing sentences, picking
up trash, working on a homework, reading a book, or simply sitting quietly for the
required time).
Suspension permanently or temporarily
14
School Attendance Policy
Because we are concerned about your child’s safety and well-being, we ask that you notify the school by phone the morning the student is absent by 10:00 AM. Failure to do this will result in the student receiving an unexcused absence. In case of Continued Absence: Parents must notify the school and provide a good reason within 5 days or we will consider it Unexcused. Note: American University Schools of the Middle East will send out an SMS to the Student's Parent after recording the absence of their son/daughter. Types of absences are: Excused: An absence due to illness, doctor’s appointment, or serious illness or death of a family member. -Students must go to the teachers and request make-up work immediately upon their return.
Explained: An explained absence (not an absence due to illness, doctor’s appointment, serious illness, or death of a family member) is when a parent/guardian takes the student out of school with the principal’s prior knowledge and approval. Students will be required to obtain assignments for classes to be missed and an assignment form completed prior to leaving the school. The assignments will be due on the day the student returns to school. Failure to follow this policy will result in the absence being recorded as an unexcused absence. Extra-Curricular Activity Absences: Activity absence is any absence that is school related or school sponsored. Extra-curricular activities include, but are not limited to, field trips, competitive events, and student activities. Truancy: students who leave school without parental consent or are absent from school on a regular basis without school authorization, or have a high rate of absenteeism shall be reported to the MOE Directorate. Parents/Guardians are obliged to send their child to school. Unexcused: An absence in which the student is out of school that does not qualify as excused or explained. The student will be brought to the office for disciplinary action and will receive no credit (0’s) for all class work missed. When a parent does not call to report an absence by 10:00 AM the morning of an absence, the school will attempt reach the parents at home or work. The principal can determine or change an absence from excused to unexcused or from unexcused to excused absence. Note: Actions are based on Ministry of Education/ Jordan Regulations and Policies
Excessive Absences: 1. Attendance letters will be sent as an SMS and the school will contact the parents when a student reaches 10 absences during the school year. This Message is intended to inform the parent/guardian that there is an attendance issue that needs to be corrected along with potential consequences.
15
2. Any student having more than 20% of total school days in an academic year or about 20 total absences (excused and unexcused) for the entire school year will be automatically retained in the current grade level regardless of academic performance.
3. An administrator may make exceptions for extenuating. 4. (Making forgivable) circumstances at their discretion. Extenuating circumstances may include hospitalization, long-term illness, the death of an immediate family member, etc.
School Hours
Students can enter the building at 7:30am. Morning Assembly starts at 7:45 am.
Classes begin at 8:00 am and students are dismissed as follows:
Sunday- Wednesday
Grades Pre-K, K1 & K2 at 12:30 pm
Grades 1, 2 &3 at 2:25 pm
Grades 4-12 at 2:30 pm
Thursdays
Grades Pre-K to 12 at 1:45 pm
Lateness
One of the most frequent reasons for lack of success in courses is the student's own failure
to get to the class on time. Punctuality is extremely important to every youngster's
progress. Unexcused absences take away from valuable learning time and are serious
offences. Repeated lateness to school or to a subject class will require a parent conference
and may result in detention or other disciplinary action.
Early Dismissal Procedure
Parents/guardians must come to the main office and request that their child be released
early. In order to ensure student safety, parents/guardians must provide identification for
the student to be released. Consent has to be written and signed by the parent if a person
other than the parent himself/herself is taking the student home. Please be advised that a
staff member may contact the parent/guardian to confirm the student dismissal.
16
Visitors
AUSME welcomes parents/guardians to visit our school. For safety, all visitors, including
parents and guardians, are required to report to the office upon arrival and departure. A
“Visitor's Log "is available at the Reception Desk to serve this reason. Students not enrolled
in AUSME are not permitted to visit unless accompanied by an adult.
Field Trips & Excursions
During the school year, teachers may schedule educational trips or field trips. Trips will be
announced in writing in advance by the teacher or school office. A permission slip must be
signed and returned to the school in order for the student to attend the field trip. The
permission form will provide details of the trip (destination, times, transportation, and
cost).
Cell Phone Policy
Cell Phone Not Visible During School Hours Students are permitted to bring their cell phone to school, but they should not have them
out at any time unless there is an emergency. Students are allowed to use their cell phones
only in an emergency situation.
Cell Phone Check In
Students must check their phone into the office or keep the phones in their lockers upon
arriving to school. It can be picked up by that student at the end of the day. Any student
who fails to turn in their cell phone and is caught with it in their possession will have their
phone confiscated.
Remember!!! Students abusing this policy will have their cell phone taken until the end
of the school day or confiscated up to 1 week from the time of infraction.
17

4. Avoid pants that fall below the waistline. Avoid see-through clothing.
5. Avoid clothing that is unsafe (such as those that pose a tripping hazard, etc.).
18
Bullying Policy
American University Schools will not tolerate bullying or like behavior. AUSME determined that school should be a safe and protective setting where students are encouraged to learn and meet their academic goals. As such, bullying interferes with both a student’s ability to learn and a school’s ability to teach because of its disruptive nature. Positive behavior including respecting others, setting an example, and discouraging bullying is expected of all administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and volunteers.
Bullying can be physical, verbal, emotional, & cyber (which include email, cell phone, Facebook, etc.). Any gesture that is expressed through written language, verbally, and/or physically that degrades a person is considered bullying. This includes, but is not limited to a person’s race, religion, color, gender, sexual orientation, disability, national origin, or any other unique characteristic.
This behavior will be considered bullying whether it takes place on or off school property, at any school function, or in a school vehicle.
Any student who chooses to participate in bullying will be met with a swift and severe consequence. However, each case will be examined on a case-by-case basis and could vary based on several factors including age, nature of the problem, past history, etc. The discipline plan should include strategies to correct the behavior, to prevent it from happening again, and to protect the bullying victim from further harm.
Dealing with a Bully
Verbal/Emotional Bullying – There are three steps that any student who is being verbally bullied should do. Those are in the following order:
STOP – Take a deep breath. Look the bully directly in the eye.
TALK – Say the bullies name……followed by “I am not a……… (Insert whatever name they called you). Do this loudly where everyone in the room will hear you.
WALK – Turn around and walk away from the situation and find the closest adult to report the incident too.
Physical Bullying – If you feel like you are about to be physically bullied by another student, immediately report it to an adult. Walk away from the situation as quickly as possible. Avoid being confrontational. If possible, find a friend nearby because bullies often will not take on more than one student at a time.
Cyber Bullying – Keep a copy of any text, email, etc in which you feel like you are being bullied. Do not delete it. Show it to an adult as soon as possible.
19
Observation of Bullying
Any student who observes another student being bullied should immediately take action to stop that student from being bullied. Those actions may include:
1. Telling the bully to leave the student alone. 2. Take the bullying victim by the hand and lead them away. 3. Report it immediately to an adult.
Any student who observes a bullying incident and fails to intervene in at least one of the three manners listed above are subject to disciplinary action.
20
Anti-Bullying Agreement
I,-------------------------- in grade ---------------, a student of American University Schools agree to stop bullying.
I believe that everybody should enjoy school equally by feeling safe, secure, and accepted regardless of color, race, gender, popularity, athletic ability, intelligence, and/or religious preference.
Bullying can be, but is not limited to: pushing, shoving, hitting, spitting, name calling, picking on, making fun of, laughing at, and/or excluding someone or several people. Bullying causes pain and stress to victims and is never justified or excusable as “kids being kids,” “just teasing” or any other excuse.
