A- In 1992, a long-term programme of research and development in the Badia was started as a joint venture between the Jordan Higher council for Science and technology (HCST) and Britain’s Royal geographical Society (RGS). The objective of the project is toshow how sustainable development of arid regions is possible, not only in the Badia but all over the world. Although the way to achieve sustainable development is a subject of heated discussion few would disagree that an essential precondition to achieving lasting and sustainable development is the gathering of facts. Too many projects have failed because of a lack of understanding of the area concerned. Recognizing that development projects are unlikely to succeed unless they involve local people, the Badia Programme has set out from the very beginning to gather as much data as it can about the Badia, Its Physical resources, environment, ecology and most importantly, its people. Water is the key resource in the Badia. In spite of the low rainfall, research is looking at a way of making more efficient use of this precious resource. Early fieldwork suggests that there may be considerable possibilities for developing rainfall harvest techniques and in reviving old skills of water management handed down through generations in the Badia. Evidence of old water-harvesting systems are scattered throughout the Badia. Although the study of these old systems will be an important starting point of work on the design and location of new structures, modern technology will also be lending a helping hand through the use of satellite images which will help the programme to assess the best places for measuring instruments. At the programmer’s inaugural meeting in 1992, the programmer’s Jordanian Patron and its most enthusiastic supporter, Prince El-Hassan, said he was deeply conscious of the need to achieve balance in development. He described how the large-scale movement of people into urban centers can create an overwhelming sense to alienation and dislocation from our natural heritage. A- I’ve been here about 2 months now. It’s very hard work but I’m still glad I decided to become a nurse. I feel much better now that I have got over my homesickness. The grant is very low but I’m sure I’ll be able to get by. Most of the lectures are very interesting, that is, when I can understand them, we have a huge amount of background reading to get through but there aren’t enough hours in the day to do it all. The hostel is ok, it’s a bit barren and it can get you down sometimes but at least it’s warm. I’m sharing room with a girl called Karen. We’ll be sharing for the rest of year so I expect we’ll all get together eventually. I’m sure we’re going to become close friends. She’s tall with short curly blonde hair (the exact opposite of me) she has quite a pale complexion and when we’re no in uniform, she usually wears black which makes her look rather delicate. (In fact she’s as strong as horse) she comes from Lancashire in the north of England and yes I can understand her. Karen is very kind but she had the most annoying habit of leaving her books and things all over the room. You can’t see her desk because it is all covered with papers. Her clothes are everywhere except in the wardrobe. You can’t walk across the floor without falling over something. She is so vague; she puts something down and forgets about it. She borrows things and then can’t remember where she’s put them. I lent her that nice black jumper last week-I don’t except I’ll ever get it back. On the other hand, I have never met anyone so generous and warm hearted, if ever you need any help. She’s always willing although she does sometimes try to get out of doing the washing up! She is also very clever. She is so alert in the lectures that I’ve asked her more than once to go over some notes with me she seems to be able to get things across better than the lectures sometimes! So, all in all, I get on with her very well. Next week we’re going to start our practical training but we’ve got exams before that so I’d better get on with some revision. Bye for now.Love, Angela Questions number one: (12 points)

B- When the brain identifies a stressful situation, a number of very rapid physical changes to the body take place to help the body cope. These changes, caused by stress hormones being pumped into the blood, include increased concentration so that brain can make rapid decisions. Also, your muscles tense for action, sweating reduces your body temperature, the pupils of your eyes dilate and visual activity increases, your heart pumps faster, your breath deeper and faster to increase oxygen input, and your mouth goes dry as digestion slows down. In the days when stress was caused by an attacking predator or other physical threat, these changes prepared the body for flight or fight either to attack the predator or to run away. In modern times, the causes of stress may be different, but the reaction of our bodies is the same. it is important to realize that these changes to your body also take place in happy situations and explain the excitement associated with pleasurable things such as talking to a large group of people, playing in the school team, meeting an important person. In these cases, we talk about pressure rather than stress. Pressure can be challenging, exciting and productive. Stress, however, can only be bad for you. People become stressed or find themselves experiencing stress, in many different situations. One person may react well in a situation while anther person may find it stressful. People may feel stressed in a situation if they think they cannot do what they are being asked to do. Problems start when stress happens too frequently or is maintained for too long. What is a stimulating and even enjoyable experience in small does can then become an unpleasant and even serious problem. We may feel trapped and unable to get on with our work. We may get headaches, pain, breathlessness or sleeplessness. When you are sitting at your desk or watching television, do you ever become conscious that your neck muscles are tense, your shoulders are hunched, and your teeth clenched firmly together? If so, you may be suffering from stress

A--In the earth's arid regions, the population is continually rising, leading to increased demands on the limited water resources of these regions. The threat that these demands on the water resources will outstrip supplies is an issue that is faced every day by the 600 million inhabitants of arid regions. It is in the Badia region of Jordan where the experts hope that some solutions will be found.

Many experts in environmental management believe that the answer to present problems lies in promoting sustainable development. This means development that , once started, can be maintained by creating a cycle of supply and demand within the local area. In other words, sustainable development needs the effective exploitation of external resources, not the artificial imposition of external resources.

In 1992, a long-term programme of research and development in the Badia was started as a joint venture between the Jordan Higher council for Science and technology (HCST) and Britain’s Royal geographical Society (RGS). The objective of the project is to show how sustainable development of arid regions is possible, not only in the Badia but all over the world. Although the way to achieve sustainable development is a subject of heated discussion few would disagree that an essential precondition to achieving lasting and sustainable development is the gathering of facts.Too many projects have failed because of a lack of understanding of the area concerned. Recognizing thatdevelopment projects are unlikely to succeed unless they involve local people, the Badia Programme has set out from the very beginning to gather as much data as it can about the Badia, Its Physical resources, environment, ecology and most importantly, its people.

TEXT A Traditionally there are six rituals which have to be observed to ensure a good marriage. Firstly, the bridegroom’s family offers a gift to the bride’s family. If this is accepted, usually by means of a return gift, then the serious negotiations can start.

The second ritual is to exchange horoscopes. If the horoscopes are compatible, then they are placed before the ancestor tablets. This is the third ritual. The fourth ritual is the payment of the bride price. The bride’s family has to be compensated for the trouble of bringing up the bride, who is now to leave the family.

At this ceremony it is common to have special dragon and phoenix cakes, symbolizing the world forces of good and evil. Once the price is accepted, the betrothal is sealed. The date of the wedding is chosen by careful attention to the stars- this is the fifth ritual. The wedding itself takes place in the home of the bridegroom. The bride enters, usually wearing a red embroidered silk jacket. The marriage consists of prayers and offerings to the bridegroom’s ancestors.

Computing technology developed much faster than governments and telecommunications suppliers thought possible. Now computer experts are arguing for the construction of wholly new, fiber-optic based, broadband, interactive networks, connected to essentially all homes and places of work.

This will mean that not only will telephone and television companies be competing in the same areas of operation, but also there will be fierce competition between companies with different standardizations. In addition, the message from the politicians is being received loud and clear: the information highway will be built, paid for and funded by the private sector.

She’s tall with short curly blonde hair; she has quite a pale complexion.
