I. MissionStatementThemissionoftheAthleticTrainingMaster’sDegreeProgramatNorthernArizonaUniversityistoprovideastudent-centeredgraduatelearningexperiencethateffectivelylinksdidacticandclinicaleducationintheprevention,evaluation,treatment,andrehabilitationofathleticinjuries.Theprogramfacultypromoteprofessionalandethicalconduct,encourageprofessionalleadership,preparestudentstobesuccessfulonthenationalBoardofCertification(BOC)examination,andstrivetoproducecompetentandconfidentAthleticTrainerspreparedforacareerinathletictraining.ThepurposeoftheAthleticTraininggraduateprogramistopreparestudentstoworkwithphysicallyactiveindividualsinavarietyofsettingstoprovideinjurypreventionandcareservices.Tosucceedinthis,weemphasizebothclassroom(didactic)andclinicaleducationeverysemesterinourprogram.ThisprovidesourstudentswithnotonlythenecessaryknowledgeandskillstobecomeAthleticTrainers,butalsothepracticetoperfecttheirskillspriortobecomingnationallycertified.Ourprogramistailoredtowardstudentswhowanttobeinvolvedinbothhealthcareandsports,workingwithathletestobothpreventinjuriesandtoprovideacontinuumofcaretogetthembacktoparticipationafterinjury.
II. LearningGoalsandObjectivesInkeepingwiththemissionofNorthernArizonaUniversity,theAthleticTrainingProgram(ATP),andinaccordancewiththeexpectationsoftheprofessionofAthleticTraining,thegoalsandobjectivesoftheAthleticTrainingEducationProgramareto:Ø Provideanenjoyableeducationalexperiencethatpreparesstudentstobecompetent
andconfidentathletictrainers,assuring90-100%employment1yearpost-graduation(assessedbyannualemploymentdata;EmployerSurvey;proficiencyprogress;teachingevaluations;andAlumniSurvey).
Ø PreparestudentstobesuccessfulonthenationalBOCcertificationexamination,assuringa90-100%firsttimepassingrate(assessedbyBOCcertificationexampassrates).
Ø Producequalifiedindividualstoserveinthesecondaryschoolsetting(assessedby
annualpost-graduationemploymentdata).
Ø Recruitandretainstudentsofminoritygroups,especiallyNativeAmericansinNorthernArizona(assessedbyannualprogramdata).
Ø DevelopyoungprofessionalsthatwillbeleadersinAthleticTrainingatthestate,district,
andnationallevels(assessedbyAlumniSurvey&alumnireportedleadershippositions).

III. CodeofEthics
TheNationalAthleticTrainer’sAssociation(NATA)hasdevelopedaCodeofEthicsforthepurposeofmakingthemembershipawareoftheprinciplesofethicalbehaviorthatshouldbefollowedinthepracticeofAthleticTraining.YoushouldbecomefamiliarwiththeNATACodeofEthics,whichcanbeaccessedat:www.nata.org/codeofethics/
ThefollowingCodeofEthicsoftheAthleticTrainingEducationProgramatNorthernArizonaUniversitywasdevelopedspecificallywiththeAthleticTrainingstudentinmind,andbasedonthesameprinciplesastheNATACodeofEthics.a. AthleticTrainingstudentsshouldneitherpracticenorcondonediscriminationagainst
anylegallyprotectedclass.b. AthleticTrainingstudentsshouldnotcondone,engagein,ordefendunsportsmanlike
conductorpractices.c. AthleticTrainingstudentsshouldprovidecareonthebasisoftheneedsoftheindividual
athlete.Theyshouldnotdiscriminateinprovidingcareonthebasisofathleticability.d. AthleticTrainingstudentsshouldstrivetoachievethehighestlevelofcompetence.
Theyshoulduseonlythosetechniquesforwhichtheyarequalifiedandauthorizedtoadminister.
e. AthleticTrainingstudentsshouldrecognizetheneedforcontinuingeducationtoremainproficientintheirpractice.Theyshouldbewillingtoconsidernewprocedureswithinguidelinesthatassurepatientsafety.
f. AthleticTrainingstudentsshouldrecognizethatpersonalconflictsandrelationshipsmightoccurwhichmayinterferewithprofessionaleffectiveness.Accordingly,theyshouldrefrainfromundertakinganyactivityinwhichpersonalissuesarelikelytoleadtoinadequateperformanceorharmtoanathleteorcolleague.
g. AthleticTrainingstudentsshouldusecaretobetruthfulandnotmisleadingwhenstatingtheireducationandexperience.
h. AthleticTrainingstudentsshouldconsistentlydemonstraterespectforothersatalltimes,includingtheirpeers,supervisors,faculty,andadministrators,throughrespectfulcommunicationandprofessionalbehavior.

CodeofConductStudentsintheATPareexpectedtoactprofessionallyinallaspectsoftheirinvolvementwiththeATP.Whileintheclinicalsetting,theywilltreattheirclinicalpreceptorswithrespect.Whileinclassrooms,theywilltreatprofessorswithrespect.Atalltimes,studentswilltreateachotherwithrespect.Conflictinevitablyarisesattimes.Pleaseseethesectioninthishandbookon“ConflictResolution”foranexplanationofhowstudentsaretohandleconflictsituations.Intheclassroom,studentsareexpectedtopayattentionandbeengagedatalltimes.Studentsshouldneverbetalkingwhenaprofessoristalkingandshouldfeelfreetotalkduringdiscussionorgroupworktimes.Tardinessisnottolerated.Unexcusedabsencesarenottolerated.Allofthisreflectsonyourlevelofprofessionalismandcommitmenttotheprofession.Intheclinicalsetting,studentsareexpectedtounderstandthespecificpoliciesandproceduresofeachclinicalsitetheyareplacedat.Studentexperienceswillbequitedifferentateachsite.ThesevariedexperiencesaresoughtaftertoexpandlearningindifferentAthleticTrainingroomsandotheralliedhealthsettings.RememberthatstudentsarerepresentingtheATPineverysettingattended.Theseclinicalexperiencesaremeanttobeeducational–aplacetoexpandandrefinetheknowledgelearnedintheclassroom.Theselearningexperiencesaretobesharedwithallstudentsineachsetting.So,itisexpectedthateachstudentwillberespectfulofeachother’slearningopportunities.Atalltimes,studentswillberespectfulofandfollowinstructionsfromtheirclinicalpreceptors.StudentsshouldneveractontheirownwhendealingwithathleteswithoutconsultationandsupervisionfromtheirClinicalPreceptor(CP).Studentsshouldneverhavenon-professionalrelationships(ie–sexualorromantic)withanyathletes,coaches,orsupervisorsthattheyworkwith.Studentsshouldalwaysfollowstateandfederallaws.Tofurtherdevelopahighlevelofprofessionalism,werequirestudentstoattendtheWinterAzATA(stateassociation)meeting.Studentsareexpectedtobehaveandpresentthemselveswiththeutmostlevelofprofessionalismwhileatthesemeetings.TheNAUATPhasareputationacrossandbeyondthestateofengaged,professionalstudents.Weexpecttomaintainthispridefulreputation.If,inanyinstance,astudentisfoundtobedisregardingthisCodeofConduct,theywillbecalledintoameetingwiththeProgramDirectorandotherfacultyorclinicalsupervisorsinvolved.Inthismeeting,afterhearingaboutthesituationinquestionfromthestudents’perspective,reprimandwillbeappliedtothestudentastheProgramDirectordeemsnecessary.Thisreprimandmayinclude,butisnotlimitedto:averbalreprimand,dismissalfromtheirclinicalsiteforaweek,dismissalfromtheirclinicalsiteforasemester,ordismissalfromtheprogram.Anyreprimandwillberecordedinletterform,submittedtotheAssociateDeanofthecollege,andplacedinthestudent’sprogramfile.

ClinicalProficiencieswillbetrackedusinganonlinedatabase.AthleticTrainingStudentsmayviewtheirprogressaswellasasubsetofskillsforeachoftheproficiencies.Accesstothiswebsiteisthroughalinkfromourmainwebsiteunderthe“program”sectionandtheclinicalproficiencieslink.Thiswebsiteispasswordprotected.
VI. AcademicPrograma. Application
StudentsmayentertheAthleticTrainingProgrambyapplyinginthefall/springoftheirlastundergraduateyearorthereafter.Admissioniscompetitiveandlimited,andrequirescompletionofspecificprerequisitecoursesandotherrequirements.Thenumberofapplicantsacceptedannuallyissetat25percampus(FlagstaffandPhoenixBiomedicalCampus–PBC).VisittheAthleticTrainingwebsiteforadmissioncriteria.Allstudentswillberequiredtosubmitfingerprintverificationcardsthroughthestate.
Thecurriculumisdesignedtobecompletedbyfull-timestudentsintwoyears.Youradvisorwillprovideyouwithasuggestedcourseofstudyspecifictoyou.Studentsshouldexpecttostudyandprepareforclassapproximately10hoursperweekoutsideofclass.Youwilllikelyberequiredtoliveinadifferentlocationforamorevariedclinicaleducationexperienceduringyoursecondyear.Thefacultywillworkwithyoutoassurethisplacementisinlinewithyourcareergoals.

StudentsintheAthleticTrainingProgramareexpectedtoattendallclassmeetings.Studentsshouldarrivetoclassontimeandbereadyforinstructionorlaboratoryactivitiesatthestatedtime.Ifstudentsneedtomissaclassforanyreason,theprofessormustbenotifiedpriortothescheduledclass.Ifunabletonotifytheprofessorpriortoclassduetocircumstancesbeyondyourcontrol,notifytheprofessorassoonaspossible.StudentsmustnotifytheprofessorBEFOREclasswiththereasonforabsenceANDgetaresponsethatconfirmstheabsenceaseither‘unexcused’or‘excused’.A2%automaticdeductionoffinalpointswilloccurforinitialunexcusedabsences.A5%automaticdeductionoffinalpointswilloccurforeachadditionalunexcusedabsence.Ifastudenthasanunexcusedabsence,theyarenotallowedattheirclinicalsitethatday/night.

VII. Advising,Registration,andScheduling Onceaccepted,studentswillworkcloselywithourProgramCoordinator,aCHHSadvisor,oranATfacultymember.TheProgramCoordinatorwillassistwithregistrationandschedulingaswellasanyotheracademicissues.Studentsmaynotdropanyclasseswithoutthepriorapprovaloftheirfaculty.Studentsareultimatelyresponsibleforschedulingandcompletingthecourseworkrequiredforgraduation.
VIII. ClinicalPreceptors a. FormalResponsibilitiesoftheClinicalPreceptor
TheClinicalPreceptorshallprovideinstructionandevaluationofAthleticTrainingstudentsontheprogram’sProficiencies(listedintheProficiencyDatabase).TheClinicalPreceptorshalldirectlysupervisetheAthleticTrainingstudentbybeingphysicallypresentinordertointerveneonbehalfoftheindividualbeingtreatedandshallevaluatestudentproficiencyinaone-on-onebasis.TheClinicalPreceptorshallinstructtheclinicalskillsthatsupportAthleticTrainingservices.TheClinicalPreceptorshallprovidefordemonstrationandfeedbackinthestudent’sdevelopmentofmasteryandparticipateinacceptededucationalpracticesforevaluationofthestudentasskillsmature.
b. SupervisionofGraduateAssistantClinicalPreceptorsGraduateAssistantsemployedbyNAUAthleticswhohavesuccessfullycompletedthenationalBoardofCertification(BOC)ExaminationmaybeinvitedtocompletetheClinicalPreceptorWorkshopofferedbytheNAUAthleticTrainingEducationProgram.GraduateAssistantsthatcompletethisworkshopmayfunctionasaClinicalPreceptor.GraduateAssistantswillnotserveasaClinicalPreceptorformorethantwoAthleticTrainingstudentspersemester.
IX. ClinicalAssignments
a. GeneralGuidelines
TheClinicalCoordinators,withinputfromtheProgramDirector,willmakeclinicalassignmentsbasedonthestudent’sprofessionalgoals,hometown,andsiteavailability.AllstudentswillchooseaclinicalsiteoutsideofFlagstafffortheirsecondyear.StudentsplacedinthePhoenixMetroareafortheirfirstyear,mayneedtobeplacedoutsideofthePhoenixMetroareatheirsecondyear.Finalplacementdecisionsfor2ndyearstudentswillliewiththeCEC,CC(PBC),andthePD.Second(2nd)yearstudentclinicalplacementswillbedeterminedbyMarch1ofeachacademicyear.Potential2ndyearstudentswillsubmittheclinicalsitepreferenceworksheettotheCEC/CC(PBC)onFebruary1stofeachacademicyearSecondyear

studentsmustbeplacedatasiteforwhichtheprogramhasanaffiliationagreementbetweenthesiteandtheNAUATProgram.IfastudentwishestobeplacedatasitethatdoesnothaveanagreementwithNAU,thestudentmustnotifytheCECofsuchasitebyOctober1stofeachacademicyear,allowingatleast10monthsforcontractsignaturespriortostudentbeginningatthatsite.OncetheCEChasbeennotified,theCECandCC(PBC),alongwiththeProgramDirector,willexplorethepossibilityofenteringanagreementwiththepotentialsite.Ifthepotentialsitemeetstherequirementsandcriteria(asdeterminedbytheCEC,CC,andPD)tobeaclinicalsiteforNAUATstudents,anagreementwillbesenttothesiteforsignature.Asignedagreementmustbeinplacepriortoastudentbeginningtheir2ndyearclinicalrotation.Studentsareexpectedtobepunctualforclinicalassignments.Intheeventthatyouwillbelateorcannotbepresentforanassignment,youmustnotifyyourclinicalpreceptoratleast24hourspriortothetardinessorabsence.Interferenceduetooutsideemploymentisnotavalidreasonforattendanceorpunctualityproblemsatyourclinicalassignment.Persistentpunctualityproblemsaregroundsfordismissalfromtheclinicalassignmentand/ortheprogram.Beingresponsibleisalargeemphasisinourprogramandreflectsonthestudent’slevelofprofessionalism.PreceptorswillregularlyevaluatetheAthleticTrainingstudent’sproficiencyinclinicalskillsandcompletethreeevaluationspersemester.PreceptorsshoulddiscussevaluationswiththeAthleticTrainingstudentpriortosubmittingtheevaluationtotheClinicalCoordinator.TheClinicalCoordinatorwillprovidestudentswithcopiesofallevaluationsuponrequest.Likewise,studentswillhavetheopportunitytoevaluatetheirPreceptoreachsemester.Answersshouldbebasedonthequalityofyourexperience,notthepersonalityofthePreceptor.
b. Hours
Theprogrampolicyregardingnumberofclinicalhoursprovidesforamaximumof480hourspersemester(30/wkfor16wks),andaminimumof240hourspersemester(15/wkfor16wks).Additionally,eachstudentmusthaveonefulldayoffper7-dayperiod.Studentsshouldstrivetowardmaximumhours,aslongasthereissufficienttimetoexcelacademically.StudentsonFirst-SemesterProbationarelimitedto15-20hoursperweek.ClinicalPreceptorswillcompleteyourworkscheduleaccordingly.Studentsshouldexpecttospendaminimumoftwentyhoursperweekattheirclinicalsite.Itisthephilosophyoftheprogramthatexperienceintheclinicalsettingwillallowyoutobecomemorecompetent,proficient,andconfidentasanAthleticTrainingstudent.Weunderstandthatmanystudentswouldliketoworkbeyondtheirregularlyscheduledhours.Studentswitha3.0GPAorabovewillbeallowedtovolunteerforadditionaltimeintheAthleticTrainingroomiftheydesire.Rememberthatacademicsareapriorityandextraclinicalhoursshouldnotconflictwithclassorstudytime.

c. ClinicalEducation
ClinicalEducationcourses(AT501,502,503,504,and505)provideopportunitiesforstudentstopracticeandrefinetheirclinicalskillsandfortheevaluationoftheirproficiencyinthoserequiredskills.Competenceintheseproficienciesistobedevelopedduringclasslaboratories,clinicalcourses,fieldworkexperience,andwithoutsidepractice.Fieldworkmaybeoncampusoroffcampusdependingonavailabilityandwillrequireafternoon,evening,andweekendtimecommitments.Preceptorswilldeterminestudentworkschedules.Practiceandcompetitiontimeswillfluctuatebyinstitutionandsportassignment.Theclinicalexperienceisessentialbecauseitgivesthestudenttheopportunitytoworkdirectlywithactivepeoplefromvariousbackgroundsintheprevention,evaluation,treatmentandrehabilitationofathleticinjuries,includingnon-sportinjuries.InadditiontotheAthleticTrainingroom,studentswillcompleteonetotwo-weekbreakoutrotationstoobserveandinteractwithphysiciansandotheralliedhealthcareprovidersintheirprofessionalsettings.InordertoobservesurgicalproceduresatNorthernArizonaOrthopedics,youmustprovideimmunizationrecords.Theprogramwillforwardtheserecordswithyoursignedconsent(AppendixA).
d. AthleticTrainingStudentTravelUnsupervisedstudenttravelwithasportsteamisindirectnon-complianceoftheCommissionforAccreditationofAthleticTrainingEducation(CAATE)“2012StandardsfortheAccreditationofProfessionalAthleticTrainingPrograms”.ThismeansthattheClinicalPreceptormustbephysicallypresentandhavetheabilitytointerveneonbehalfoftheathleteandathletictrainingstudenttoprovideon-goingandconsistenteducation.Thus,studenttravelwithasportsteamwhenaClinicalPreceptorisnotpresentisnotallowed.TravelisallowedonlywhenaccompaniedbyaClinicalPreceptor.
StudentswhohavebeenplacedonFirstorSecond-SemesterProbationmaynottravelwiththeirClinicalPreceptorfurtherthan20milesfromtheirprimaryclinicalsite.Thisissetinpolicytoprotectthestudent’stimecommitmentstopromoteimprovementintheiracademicwork.
e. LightningPolicyLightningisoftenadailyoccurrenceinArizonaduringmonsoonseasoninthefall.Intheeventoflightningstrikes,lightningpoliciesinplaceattheCertifiedAthleticTrainer’splaceofemploymentortheAthleticTrainingstudent’sassignedclinicalsiteshallbefollowed.ItistheresponsibilityoftheCertifiedAthleticTrainerateachaffiliatedclinicalsitetoinformNAUATProgramstudentsoftheirrespectivelightningpolicy.AthleticTrainingstudentsshouldinturnrequestthisinformationduringtheirorientationtoeachclinicalsite.

f. TransportationtoClinicalSitesStudentsareresponsiblefortheirowntransportationtoandfromtheirclinicalassignments.Studentsareresponsibleforautoinsuranceonpersonalvehicles.Studentsshouldnevertransportanathleteintheirpersonalvehicle.
g. ConfidentialityPatient/Athleteconfidentialityisoftheutmostimportance,particularlyinathleticswheretherearemanybystanders.Atnotimeshouldthatconfidentialitybebreached.Studentsshouldnotdiscussconfidentialpatient/athletemedicalinformationwithanyone(thepress,professionalscouts,roommates,parents,boyfriend/girlfriend,etc.)otherthantheirclinicalpreceptorsandoverseeingphysicians.AllrecordsareconfidentialandshouldneverberemovedfromtheclinicalsitewithoutpermissionofthePreceptor.Toassurethatstudentsareawareofconfidentialitylaws,eachstudentmustgothroughHIPAAtrainingbeforetheybeginattheirclinicalsite.Additionally,allstudentsmustcompleteFERPAtraining.Bothofthesetrainingswillbeofferedinthesummerwhennewstudentsreportfortheirfirstcoursesintheprogram.
h. ConflictsConflictsintheAthleticTrainingroomwillhappen.AstudentmayhaveadifferenceofopinionwithapreceptororanotherAthleticTrainingstudentregardingpatientcare.Studentsareencouragedtodiscussthisprivatelywiththeotherpersonatanappropriatetime.Neverargueinthepresenceofthepatient.Thismayunderminethepatient’sconfidenceinthepreceptorand/orthestudent.TheCertifiedAthleticTrainer,inconsultationwiththeteamphysician,makesfinaldecisionsregardingcareoftheathlete.Ifapeerconflictcannotberesolved,thesituationshouldbebroughttotheattentionoftheClinicalPreceptor.Ifproblemsremainunresolved,studentsmaycontacttheClinicalCoordinatorwhowillinterveneandserveasamediatoruntiltheconflictisresolved.
i. StudentRoles1. ClinicalEducation
StudentResponsibilities-Theathletictrainingclinicalproficienciesaretaughtandevaluatedinbothacademicandclinicaleducationcourses.StudentsareexposedtovarioussettingswhereAthleticTrainersorotherspecializedhealthcare/medicalprofessionalsareemployed.Responsibilitiesaretolearnandmaintainahighlevelofprofessionalism.Supervision-StudentsmustbedirectlysupervisedbyaClinicalPreceptorduringthedeliveryofathletictrainingservices.TheClinicalPreceptormustbephysicallypresentandhavetheabilitytointerveneonbehalfoftheathletictrainingstudentandthepatient.Proficiencyevaluationbyaspecializedhealthcare/medicalprofessionalmustbere-evaluatedbyaClinicalPreceptortodeterminethestudent’sabilitytoapplytheskillsclinically.

XI. ProfessionalRelationships a. MedicalProfessionals
Studentsshouldactprofessionallywheninteractingwithphysiciansandothermedicalprofessionals.Theseinteractionsareveryimportanttotheclinicaleducationofthestudentandtheyaretobeactivelysoughtout.Studentsareencouragedtoaskquestionswhenappropriateandtouseappropriatemedicalterminology.
b. AthletesStudentsshouldconductthemselvesinaprofessionalmanneratalltimes.Atnotimeshouldtheyengageinconductthatwouldundermineanathlete’sconfidenceorcauseaconflictofinterestinthecareofanathlete.Thisincludessocialinteractionwithathletesoutsideofthestudent’sclinicalassignmentandromanticrelationshipswithanyathleteattheclinicalsiteatwhichthestudentisplaced.
c. Coaches
Itisimportantthatstudentsdevelopprofessionalrelationshipswithcoaches.Generally,aclinicalpreceptorwillprovidestatusreportstocoaches,althoughstudentswillberequiredtodothisonoccasion.Youshoulddiscusshowtohandlethecoaches’questionswithyourclinicalpreceptor.Astudent’sinteractionshouldincreasewiththeirclinicalexperience.Occasionallysuchinteractionscanpresentdifficulties.Ifastudenthasdifficultywithacoachorathlete,he/sheshouldmakethisknowntotheclinicalpreceptorimmediately.Mostproblemscanbeeasilyresolvedifapproachedearlyandproperly.Social/romanticrelationshipswithcoachesareforbidden.Suchrelationshipswillbecausefordismissalfromtheprogram.Ifacoachapproachesyou,youshouldinformyourclinicalpreceptorimmediately.
d. TheMediaStudentsinclinicalrotations,especiallyinthecollegiatesetting,maybeaskedbythepresstoprovideinformationaboutanathlete’scondition.Reportersmaydothisverysubtly,withoutaskingadirectquestion.Studentsshouldbemindfulaboutpatient/athleteconfidentialityindealingwiththepress.Thebestpolicywhenconfrontedbythepressistobepolite,butredirectthemtoyourclinicalpreceptor.Remember,nothingmentionedwhiletalkingtothepressis“offtherecord.”

ItisaprogramrequirementthatstudentsMUSTcompletefourfullsemestersofclinicaleducationexperience.Ifastudenthasbeenonsecondsemesterprobation(seebelow)andthusnotgainingexperienceattheirclinicalsite,theyneedtobeawarethatthiswillprolongtheirgraduationbyonefullfallorspringsemesterwhiletheycompletetheirfourthFULLsemesterofclinicaleducation.Theprogramdirectorwillnotbeabletosigntherequired“BOCProgramDirectorEndorsement”thatallowsthestudenttotaketheBOCexam,withoutthestudentcompleting4fullsemestersofclinicaleducation.
i. iii. DISMISSALFROMTHEPROGRAM
TheAthleticTrainingfacultywillmakedecisionsregardingtherecommendationtotheGraduateCollegeofdismissalofastudentfromtheprogram.Aletterwillbecreated,discussedwiththestudent,andsenttotheGraduateCollegerecommendingdismissal.Thisletterwillbeplacedinthestudent’sfileandsenttothestudent.Forafulldescriptionofthisprocess,pleaseseeUniversityGraduateProgramDismissalPolicyat:https://policy.nau.edu/policy/policy.aspx?num=100319Studentswhohavenotremediedtheirprobationstatusattheendoftwoprobationarysemesters,whetherconsecutivesemestersornot,willberecommendedfordismissalfromtheprogram.Thus,studentsmayonlybeonanyformofprobationfortwosemesterswhileintheprogram.Iftheyrequireathirdsemesterofprobation,theywillbedismissedfromtheprogram.Othercircumstances(i.e.sacrificingpatientconfidentiality,unprofessionalrelationshipwithanathlete,repeateddisrespectdemonstratedforothers,etc.)mayresultinastudentbeingrecommendedforimmediatedismissal.Thesesituationswillfollowtheuniversitydismissalprocessandbedealtwithonacase-by-casebasis.
c. ProcedureforDisciplinaryAction
StudentsarerequiredtoadheretotheCodeofEthicsestablishedbytheNationalAthleticTrainers’Association,theArizonaLicensureLawsgoverningtheprofession,theProgramCodeofConduct,theNAUCodeofConductadoptedbytheArizonaBoardofRegents,andallstateandfederallaws.
AninfractionoftheaboveCodeofConductmayresultinthefollowing:1stinfraction–verbaland/orwrittenprofessionalwarning;possiblesuspensionfrom
clinicalsite; 2ndinfraction–mayresultinoneorallofthefollowing:
a. removedfromtheclinicalsite,b. assignmentoffailinggradefortheclinicaleducationcourseforthatsemester,c. mandatoryre-enrollmentintheclinicaleducationcourse;
3rdinfraction–recommendationfordismissalfromtheProgram.
Whenaninfractionoccurs,thefollowingstepsmustbefollowed:1. TheinstructorortheClinicalPreceptormeetswiththestudenttodiscusstheincident.2. TheinstructororClinicalPreceptorsubmitsawrittenreportoftheincidenttothe
ProgramDirector,includinganyoutcomeorresolution.3. Ifnotresolved,theProgramDirectormeetswiththeprogramfaculty,student,anda
silentwitnessifselectedbythestudent,todiscusstheincident.Thismeetingistogivethestudentanopportunitytopresenttheircase.Followingthisreview,theProgramDirectorwilldeterminetheappropriatedisciplinaryaction,ifany.

XVII. HealthandImmunizations
Studentsmusthaveaphysicalexaminationcompletedbyalicensedpracticinghealthcareprovider(i.e.M.D.,D.O.,PA-C,NP).Theprogramusesastandardform(AppendixB)forthisevaluation.Thepractitionershouldattestthatyouareabletomeetthetechnicalstandards(AppendixD)fortheprogram.Allinformationgivenbythestudentonthehealthevaluationisexpectedtobecorrectandcurrent.ThefollowingimmunizationsarerequiredtobeuptodatewhileintheAthleticTrainingEducationProgram.

XVIII. DisabilityResources
TheAthleticTrainingEducationProgramworkscollaborativelywithDisabilityResources(DR)tomakeaccommodationsforstudentswithdisabilities.AllstudentsmustreadandsigntheTechnicalStandards(AppendixC)fortheprogramuponacceptance.Acopyofthisformisincludedinthehandbook.ThisformservesasofficialnotificationofthespecifictechnicalstandardsforcompletionoftheprogramasrequiredbytheAmericanswithDisabilitiesActandsection504oftheRehabilitationAct.Requestsforaccommodationarenotreviewedaspartofthecriteriaforprogramadmissionandsuchrequestsarenotusedprejudiciallyagainstthestudent.StudentsrequestingaccommodationshouldcontacttheDRofficeassoonaspossible.Ideally,accommodationrequirementsshouldbeinwritingbeforethebeginningofthesemesterbutcanbecompletedatanytime.Ifastudent’sconditionchangeswhileintheprogram,thestudentishighlyencouragedtocontacttheProgramDirectorandtheDRofficewithintwoweeksofthechange.

theirdirectclinicalpreceptor.Thestudentshallnotreporttotheirclinicalassignmentuntilclearedbyaphysician.AllstudentsadmittedtotheProgramarerequiredtogothroughanOSHABloodBornePathogentrainingbeforebeginningtheirclinicaleducation.TheOSHABBPtrainingisprovidedthroughtheProgramandinstitutiononline.AIDSandHepatitisBcanbespreadbydirectbloodtransmissionintothebloodstreamofanotherandbysemenorvaginalfluidcontact.ThesediseasesdonotposeariskifbodyfluidssuchasbloodarecorrectlyhandledandOSHAguidelinesarefollowed.BysigningtheAppendixE–LetterofAgreement,thestudentisverifyingthattheyunderstandthisCommunicableDiseasePolicy.
XX. StudentLiabilityInsurance&SecondarySchoolFingerprinting

FinancialAssistance ProceduresforapplyingforfinancialaidareavailablefromthefinancialaidofficeoftheUniversity(GammageBuilding,3rdFloor).Youshouldsetupameetingwithafinancialaidcounselortoassessyourneed.AllstudentsshouldsubmitaFAFSAapplicationtomakethemeligibleforneed-basedscholarships.Therearescholarshipsavailablethroughvariousprofessionalorganizations(i.e.NATA,RMATA),thecollege,theNAUAthleticTrainingRoom,

andtheAthleticTrainingEducationProgram.Mostprofessionalorganizationswillrequiremembershipforeligibility.Additionally,somestudentsmayqualifyforawork-studypositiononcampus.Seetheprogramwebsiteformoreinformationonscholarshipsandwork-study.Forinformationonexpenses(i.e.tuition,room,board,etc.)whileattendingNAUpleaserefertotheGraduateCatalogortheuniversitywebsite(www.nau.edu).ScholarshipsprovidedbytheAthleticTrainingProgramareintendedtohelpyouwiththecostofyoureducation.Thisincludestuition,room,board,andbooks.Theuseofscholarshipmoneyforanythingotherthanthepreviouslymentioneditemswillresultintherevokingofthecurrentscholarship.Ifascholarshipmustberevoked,thestudentwillnotbeconsideredforAthleticTrainingProgramscholarshipsinthefutureandthefacultywillnotprovidewrittenrecommendationforoutsidescholarships.
XXII. OutsideEmployment
Theclinicaleducationcomponentofthecurriculumrequiresstudentstocompleteextensiveafternoon,evening,andweekendclinicalrotations.Theseclinicalrotationswilllikelyinterferewiththestudent’sabilitytoholdoutsideemployment.Studentsneedtomakeappropriatefinancialplanspriortoenrollingintheprogram.Studentsarenotprohibitedfromholdingoutsideemployment,butsuchemploymentmaynotinterferewiththestudent’sclinicalassignmentsortheirabilitytocompletecoursework.
XXIII. GrievancePolicy
TheAthleticTrainingProgram(ATP)atNorthernArizonarealizesthatmisunderstandingsanddisagreementsmayariseduringthecourseofastudent’senrollmentintheprogram.InformalProceduresInitially,disagreements,complaints,misunderstandingsandgrievancesdirectlyassociatedwiththeAthleticTrainingstudent’scommitmentsorinvolvementintheATPcanberesolvedbyusinginformaldiscussion,exchanges,counseling,andotherinformalprocedures.Itistheintentofthispolicytomaximizetheseinformalproceduressolongassuchmeasuresproveeffective.FormalProceduresTheformalproceduralprovisionsofthispolicyshouldbesetinmotiononlywhentheinformalproceduresprovetobeormanifestlywillbeineffective.Itisexpectedthatthegreatmajorityofcaseswillbehandledinaccordancewithinformalprocedures.Fortheadministrationofformalgrievanceprocedures,theNAUpolicywillbefollowed.Pleaseseethispolicyat:http://home.nau.edu/studentlife/handbook.asp
