X+(Wang+Taylor)= Big well doneMore success for Cantell students in the United Kingdom Maths Challenge. Two Cantell students, one in Year 10 and one in Year 11, took the unprecedented step this year of entering the senior Maths challenge; aimed at pupils studying maths in Year 12 and 13. Peter Taylor, Year 10, performed very well, securing a Gold certificate and qualifying for the Kangeroo competition at this level. Benjie Wang, Year 11, also secured a Gold certificate, and was all smiles when he found out that he had qualified for the highest level of competition in the next round. Both competi-tions will take place on the 30th November 2012 and we wish both of them the best of luck.Mr Brown

The school has recently bid and secured some funding from The Princes Trust to provide and deliver a music project as an after school event. The project will provide the opportunity for students to take part in an accredited Arts Award at Bronze level. On successful completion of the course this award is equivalent to a GCSE grade C to G.This project will be taking place weekly on a Wednesday 3pm -5pm at SOCO Music, which is in the Bargate Centre Southampton. It is an excellent opportunity for any students that are interested, in Music; whether produc-ing, performing, filming, mixing & editing, you need not have any experience but just want to get involved. It is an opportunity to gain some ‘hands-on’ experience in a professional recording studio, using some Hi-tech production equipment. The project is being supported by City Eye Productions who will film the whole process, so there is also an opportunity for students to get behind the cameras and get involved in the filming, editing, storyboarding and general producing, which will result in the production of a video diary of the whole project. We will be providing school mini bus transportation for the group to get there, but there is an expectation that students make their own way home or be collected.Any student interested in the project direct them to come and see me ASAP, as places are very limited. These are a few statements of some of the students taking part:“Its fun because we are always learning whilst playing, also we get to meet new people and make music” - J.Calloway Yr9“It’s cool working with the equipment” - N. Galinas Yr 11“Its really fun because I like music and I can also get a G.C.S.E” - R.Marlow Yr 9

Wardens ProjectThe Inclusion Department sup-ports a group of students on a Community Warden Project which takes the students out on a weekly basis into the commu-nity, working alongside the Wardens, on whatever activities they have detailed on their work log for the day. This can include a variety of practical tasks such as digging, sawing, drilling, painting and clearing etc.

This can be conducted in a diverse range of premises and local locations e.g. residential homes, play parks, council accommodation and community council-run buildings. During the project there is interaction with the general public, council employers and local residents. The project provides an opportunity for students to socialise with their peers and adults, for personal development, build confidence and raise self-esteem. It also enables students to access to different experiences and develop communication and listening skills. Please read a few statements from the students who are currently on the project and also some students who have been on project in the past.“Get to dig up & cut things down and its fun” D.Pierce Yr8“It’s hard work but lots of fun” J.Taylor Yr8Mr Evans

Anti-Bullying AmbassadorsWe, at Cantell, pride ourselves on our Anti- Bullying Ethos, so when the opportunity came for our students to train as Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, we embraced the idea.Mrs Ridout took 10 students to Upper Shirley High School, where they met Alex Holmes, who delivered an amazing event

to inspire and give young people the knowledge and tools to become young Ambassadors. Our students had an amazing day, joining in with many other schools, sharing ideas and get-ting involved in role play and confidence building workshops.

They will be in and around the school grounds looking for hot-spots, where students may need support in making new friends, encouraging students to report any issues and help them in the right direction. They are organising creative fun days like ‘compliment a student’ or ‘smile’ days, as well as fund-raising events for Anti Bullying Charities.Watch this space for news updates and photos.Teresa Ridout - Anti-bullying Officer

Things are really looking up for NORTHAM with a little help from our new Year 7’s and

their sporting achievements. The Year 7 football team (7 of the team are in NORTHAM

house) won their first ever game for Cantell against Bitterne Park School; winning

a superb 8-3 and they have continued to show us what champions they are by still

remaining unbeaten. Congratulations have also been given to Minhad Rahman for

winning the Year 7 house volleyball competition, and to the boys for winning the house

football competition. The Year 7 sports day also made me a proud house leader because the

NORTHAM cohort pulled together as a team and supported one another right to the very

end. Their enthusiasm was electric and kept me smiling; I feel 2nd place was well deserved.

Good luck!

MovemberAs the cold weather sets in and the chill of winter approaches a group of Cantell’s male teachers

have started to sprout a warm bar of face fur above their upper lips. Is this simply to give them some

protection from the winter chill? Is it so they can have a bit of ‘swag’ and look ‘sick’ ?

Nope, it’s all in aide of Movember!

Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a moustache growing charity event held

during November each year that raises funds and awareness for men’s health.

This year staff including Mr. Oxford, Lambert, Bagust,

Stevenson, Curtis, Monk and Tyas are growing a Mo to

support this charity.

Friday November 30th will be a Non(m)-uniform day

so please bring in £1 to donate and wear

your fake moustache to show your support for the Men

of Mo.. Now, which Mo should sir grow?

Yours in Mo-ness. Mr. Stevenson

Yr 9 FootballCantell vs Redbridge was an exciting game that ebbed and flowed, on a difficult windy pitch. Cantell took the lead through a great goal by Jack Callaway. This was a spirited performance in which the team led twice with the game finishing 3-3. Man of match was Alex Ladkin.
