The Institute

Located in Portland, Oregon since 1985, the Aesthetics Institute is licensed by the State of Oregon Board of Education and has trained hundreds of professionals in Esthetics, Nail Technology, and Electrology. The unmatched training given by the Aesthetics Institute has made it one of the most respected schools in the northwest. Many salon owners will not hire new graduates unless they come from the Aes-thetics Institute. Graduates from the Institute have a long legacy for not only gradu-ating but being able to easily step from the classroom directly into the salon spa, medical fields, or their own business.

The Institute is located at 2245 SE Powell Blvd, Portland, OR 97202. It is directly across from the beautiful Powell Park and occupies a building with over 5,000 square feet of classrooms, instructional areas, testing area, private treatment rooms, body treatment areas, and offices.

Students at the Aesthetics Institute are exposed to a wide-variety of equipment and learning tools to help enhance their educa-tion. The Institute believes in a four-fold learning system. One that recognizes that each student may learn in a different way. We offer materials that focus on the visual, auditory, practical, and social learning skills.

VISUAL Seeing pictures, graphics, reading, receiving handouts, and viewing instructional videos.

AUDITORY Hearing lectures or discus-sions; listening to presenta-tions.

PRACTICAL Hands-on application, work-ing in groups, having physi-cal experience.

SOCIAL Interaction with groups and with clients.

These styles are demonstrated in our four-fold system through the following learning tools:

What is Competency-Based?

Competency-based programs are designed with you as their

focus. When you have completed the theory of the program

and proven, through testing, that you have a grasp of the skills

required for the profession you can graduate and begin your

career. Competency-based training benefits the students in

other ways:

1. Tailored to Your Life: Although the program is not intend-

ed as a short-cut to licensing, it does allow you to advance

based on how dedicated you are to your education. The

program allows you to advance through the theory at a

pace that may be faster than in a non-competency-based

school.

2. Ability-Focused: In most hourly-based programs the cur-

riculum is focused solely on passing tests. Competency-

based training allows for het development of abilities so

that you can pass all needed exams and feel confident as

you move into the industry. Our graduates ar ready from

day one to work in any environment of their choice. This

has built a reputation for the Aesthetics Institute graduate

that holds them to a higher standard.

3. Specialization: Because of its flexibility, the program al-

lows the student to identify and gain additional experi-

ence in a specialized area of the program.

4. Self-Paced Learning: The format of the school provides a

structure to help move you along toward graduation;

however, it provides the flexibility to spend more time in

areas that are more complicated or in which you would

like additional proficiency.

The Esthetics (basics and masters) and Nail Technology cours-

es are competency-based. Electrology is a 600-hour course.

Electrology Program

OBJECTIVE

This program gives a balance of theoretical and practical education in a 600-hour program. It provides the technical knowledge and related experience pertaining to permanent hair removal or super-fluous hair on the face and body using Galvanic (Electrology), Ther-mology (Flash & Manual), and the Blend. The curriculum is sup-ported by in-classroom experiments to illustrate the affects of the different treatments and the best use of the technology.

Graduates of the Institute’s Electrology program will be prepared to take the Oregon State exams and feel confident about entering the permanent hair removal industry as a PROFESSIONAL ELEC-TROLOGIST and/or THERMOLOGIST.

Training in Electrology provides a great opportunity to become your own boss in an emotionally-and-financially rewarding career. Even though most Electrologists are self-employed they can be found in spas, laser clinics, medical offices, wellness cen-ters, and private offices.

PROGRAM DETAILS The Electrology program satisfies the mini-mum requirements for licensure in the State of Oregon. The course covers:

WHAT IS ELECTROLOGY, THERMOLOGY, AND THE BLEND

In 1875, Charles E. Michel removed an ingrown eyelash with the use of Direct Current, otherwise known as Electrolysis. The electrical current works by causing a chemical reaction of the salts and water that is present in the tissue turning it into sodium hydroxide. Sodium hydroxide is able to follow the curve of the follicles. The Electrolysis current, therefore, makes it possible to treat heavy and/or curly hairs.

In 1940, High Frequency (Thermolysis) became a popular treatment due to its great speed of application. Thermolysis means destruction of tissue by heat. Due

to the narrowness of this current and build-up pattern, it primarily is used on fine to medium hairs or with the Electrolysis current making it into the Blend.

In 1948, the patent was granted for the Blend equipment. The Blend is using Thermolysis and Electrolysis currents at the same time. The bene-fit of this is the thoroughness of the electrolysis and the speed of the Thermolysis, making it possible to remove more hairs at a time and still follow the curve of the follicle.

Aesthetics Institute Policies

ABILITY TO BENEFIT The Institute considers an applicant with a high school diplo-ma (or equivalent) as possessing the skills and ability to bene-fit from the programs offered. No separate Ability-To-Benefit test is offered. ABSENCES When students are absent, they must submit an Absence Noti-fication prior to 9am on the day of absence either by calling the institute or via email to [email protected]. Regard-less of the reason for the absence, the absence affects the student’s attendance rate. At the Institute, the difference between Excused and Unex-cused absences is in notification. If notice was given to the Institute it is excused. If no notice is given, it is unexcused. Both excused and unexcused absences still negatively affect the student’s attendance rate. Failure to provide notice of absence may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination from the Institute. The only exception to this policy is a Medical Leave of Absence (see MEDICAL LEAVE) ACADEMIC SATISFACTORY PROGRESS Students must receive at least 75% on all examinations (book and practical). Students are allowed to retake examinations but may receive a maximum of 75% on the retake examina-tion. The failing score is dropped from the student’s progress report after a successful retake examination. ACCESS TO RECORDS (FERPA) The Institute collects data on all students. The kind and amount of data differ for each student depending on the kind of services used and the length of stay at the Institute. Pursu-ant to Public Law 93-380, the student may review all official records, files or data pertaining to the student (which are kept for five years), with the following exceptions:

Confidential information reported by the parent or guard-ian unless the letter has explicitly granted written permis-sion for the student to review the financial statement.

Medical, psychiatric, or similar records used for treatment purposes.

Access to the records is guaranteed and must be given within 45 days of the student’s official request. The student may challenge the content of a record considered inaccurate, mis-leading, or otherwise in violation of your privacy or other rights. If the student feels there is a discrepancy, the student must contact the owner of the Institute.

Students may request information via the FERPA Records In-quiry form and submit it to the office.

APPLICATION An individual interested in attending the Institute must submit the completed application form, state-issued identification, and the $25 application fee to be considered for enrollment. An accepted applicant has 60 days to execute the enrollment agreement or the application will expire and the student will have to reapply.

APPLICATION EVALUATION All applications will be evaluated within seven days from the receipt of a completed application. Notification of the Insti-tute’s decision will be mailed via US Mail or email (if requested in the application). The Institute requires the applicant to have graduated from high school (or equivalent), have state-issued identification, and have completed an application. The Institute evaluates the responses submitted in the application. The final step in the process is determining if there is space available in the requested start date. If the desired start date is full, the next start day may be offered.

ATTENDANCE POLICY It is expected that Students attend their contractually obligat-ed schedule. Students must maintain at least a 75% overall attendance rate to be considered in Good Standing. For an understanding of how hours are calculated see HOUR CALCU-LATION.

CANCELLATION RIGHTS Students may cancel their enrollment at the Institute by sub-mitting written notice to the Institute (see REFUNDS).

CONDUCT Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional and courteous manner toward students, instructors, and cli-ents. Failure to demonstrate a professional conduct may re-sult in disciplinary action up to and including termination. A non-inclusive list of violations of professional conduct could include: lack of proper hygiene, wearing uniform inappropri-ately or lack thereof, being under the influence of illegal drugs and/or alcohol, theft, disrespect toward other students, staff, and/or clients, etc.

DIPLOMA / LICENSURE The Institute awards diplomas in the following: Esthetics (basics), Esthetics (masters), Esthetics (basics) with Honors, Esthetics (masters) with Honors, Nail Technology, Nail Tech-nology with Honors, Electrology, and Electrology with Honors. Graduates of both Esthetics programs will take the same state board exams to become a licensed Esthetician. Even though the Institute has a two-tiered program, the State of Oregon does not have a two tiered license. Other certifications may be given to the student based on their completed coursework at the Institute. These are certifi-cations or training, not separate licenses. Those in the Nail Technology program will take the state board exams to become a licensed Nail Technician. Those in the Electrology program will take the state board exams to become a licensed Electrologist.

DISCIPLINARY ACTION Instructors will meet with any student that is falling below the acceptable academic and/or attendance standards. An exami-nation grade below 75%, or a single month under 75% attend-ance is an automatic warning to the student. A written warning and action plan will be developed in cooper-ation with the instructor and student for students consistently failing examinations on the first attempt and/or have an over-all attendance rate below 75%. Based on the action plan developed between the instructor and student further disciplinary action may be taken up to and including termination of enrollment. The disciplinary process includes verbal warning, written warning, probation, suspension, and termination. Although this is a graduated scale, depending an the severity of the ac-tion some or all of the steps may be skipped. The duration of each step of action is dependent on the action plan developed in response to the action. VERBAL WARNING Student is notified that a behavior, or action, is in violation of policy or standards of conduct. The warn ing is noted in the Aesthetics Institute Student Infor mation Database (AISID) and can be signed or not signed. WRITTEN WARNING

If the student is due a refund it shall be delivered im- mediately after the appeal window. APPEALS A student may appeal any disciplinary decision by submitting a written appeal within 3 days of discipli nary notice. The executive committee will hold a meeting with the student to hear and decide upon the appeal. Students that feel aggrieved by the act ion of the Executive Committee should see GRIEV ANCES in this catalog. ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION All students at The Institute must have a valid email on file. In the event that the leave exceeds 180 days, readmission to the Institute may be required. The hours of the leave will not ac-crue against the student’s maximum number of hours. Only one medical leave of absence will be granted, regardless of the number of days used. Students not returning by the leave return date will be dropped from enrollment immediate-ly.

NON-DISCRIMINATION The Institute does not discriminate on the basis of sex, age, race, color, religion, ethnic origin, or sexual orientation (ORS 659.850). Hours are billed according to the Student’s schedule not actual hours of attendance. PAYMENT PLAN The Institute offers an in-house payment plan for all of its pro-grams. Students on payment plans that extend beyond gradu-ation must be current on their payment plan in order to grad-uate. Students on payment plans that do not extend beyond graduation must be paid in full prior to graduation. All addi-tional fees and account charges must be paid in full prior to graduation. Specific details for the payment plan can be re-viewed by contacting the Institute’s finance office. Students may pay amounts greater than the minimum required (including full payment) at any time without penalty. There is no discount for paying all in full. Payment plans may incur additional fees, charges, and interest. SCHOLARSHIPS Students that have received scholarships or grants to attend an institution of higher education should work with the schol-arship awarding organization to determine if the scholarship can be used at the Institute. The Institute can work with the awarding agency at the request of the student.

Students with tardiness issues that affect their education or other stu-dents will be addressed by school administration. A student is considered tardy if they are more then 5 minutes late.
