“Raising Community Consciousness and Voice”

Thank you to all who attended our division meeting on October 2nd. This meeting allowed us to connect with colleagues across departments, share some of our assessment efforts through posters, share updates and highlights, and for some win an opportunity to connect with one SALT member during lunch. I hope everyone will attend our next division meeting in the spring! Click here to view pictures.

On September 16, members of the Cal State Fullerton community gathered at the Becker Amphitheatre to celebrate the ceremonial groundbreaking for the Titan Student Union expansion project. Beginning at 1 p.m., student jazz musicians from the CSUF music program entertained arriving guests as groups took turns capturing the day with a commemorative photo in the photo booth next to the stage. Speakers included Dr. Mildred García, University President; Assemblymember Young Kim; Dr. Berenecea Johnson Eanes, Vice President for Student Affairs;

The Titans got off to the best start in program history, winning five straight games to open the season. It was Fullerton’s best start since they opened the year 4-0 in 2008 and 1995. The Titans finished September with a 8-1-1 record in non-conference action. It is the first time the Titans have suffered just one loss in non-conference play since 2002. They also currently own a nine-game winning streak at Titan Stadium dating back to 2014. Rebecca Wilson leads the team with 10 goals this season while Christina Burkenroad is second with

Martina Edberg set a new single-round scoring record in the second round of the Cougar Cup at Pullman Wash. on Sept. 21. Edberg shot a 7-under 65 in the round and finished the tournament tied for second place after finishing with a 3-under 213. The following week, Edberg recorded her fourth career victory after posting a 5-under 211, a new personal best. She posted consecutive rounds of 68 and 67 to finish off the tournament, winning the event by six strokes.

The Hispanic Heritage Month President’s Reception was held on Wednesday, September 16 at the Fullerton Marriott. The featured keynote, Dr. Mary Ann Villareal who is the Director of Strategic Initiatives & University Projects, spoke to the theme “Con Ganas y Amor: The Extraordinary Impact of Everyday Lives”. Dr. Villareal shared oral histories about the contributions of Texas Mexican women business owners in society. The reception was filled with energy by performances from Trio Ellas, who is a Grammy nominated group with elements of jazz, pop, country, and mariachi. To end the night, Ballet Folklorico de CSUF performed and was recognized for their contributions to CSUF.

Discoverfest is CSUF’s largest student involvement fair. This dynamic event attracts thousands of students to the Quad and TitanWalk every semester for a chance to meet the leaders and members of our student organizations and campus departments, and also learn about the several campus involvement opportunities. This semester’s Discoverfest was bigger and better than ever. Approximately 275 student organizations and departments shared information about their resources, and students were able to watch live entertainment, receive a free tote bag, visit food trucks, and interact with Power 106 FM. Another added component to this semester’s Discoverfest was a resource quiz - rightfully named DiscoverQuest. The Office of Student Life and Leadership looks forward to our Spring Discoverfest on February 3-4, 2016. It will undoubtedly continue to enhance the Titan Experience for all CSUF students.

Alyssa Avila serves as the Violence Prevention Educator and Confidential Victim Advocate in the WARC. As the Educator she coordinates violence prevention programs, events, and training alongside her graduate assistant and 6 student peer educators. As the advocate Alyssa is someone who can listen without judgment, provide information about options, and give referrals for both on and off campus resources to students, staff, or faculty who have experienced sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, or stalking. Alyssa can also provide support to friends, roommates, or others who are supporting survivors. Alyssa comes to us most recently from UC Merced, serving as the Violence Prevention Program Coordinator and previously worked at a House of Ruth, a domestic violence agency, serving as the Youth Advocate and Volunteer Coordinator Assistant. She is passionate about issues of social justice, feminism, empowerment, and supporting students in their journey of higher education. In her spare time, you can find Alyssa reading for her Master’s program in Higher Education here at CSUF (Go Titans!) or spending time with her partner, family, and two dogs Izzy and Bo.

Athletics Academic Services is working closely with our Faculty Athletics Representative, Dr. Mike Perez, to expand an Athletics Faculty Mentor Program that was piloted in 2014-2015. The program is a High Impact Practice (HIP) designed to facilitate persistence, retention and timely graduation through strengthening of academic and career mentoring relationships between faculty and student-athletes. A faculty mentor working with a designated intercollegiate athletics team will have the opportunity to join teams to observe practices, competitions, and other team functions, in an effort to give faculty members a greater sense of how the co-curricular participation in intercollegiate athletics advances the mission of California State University, Fullerton. Furthermore, student-athletes will have the opportunity to develop skills necessary to effectively communicate with faculty members to achieve academic and/or career goals, in preparation to become leaders in a global society. We look forward to continuing to build collaborative partnerships with our faculty colleagues, in support of our Titan student-athletes.

More than 1,900 students and their families were welcomed home by Housing and Residence Life staff, student volunteers and campus partners on Thursday, August 20 to kick off the beginning of the 2015-2016 academic year. Opening day activities included a resource fair, parents welcome, town hall, floor meetings, and dinner in the Gastronome – but the fun didn’t stop there. Residents were quickly immersed in Housing Orientation Weekend activities allowing them the opportunity to begin connecting within our community. Highlights from the move-in experience include a visit from President García, attending an Angels baseball game, participating in large scale icebreakers, watching a movie under the stars, and finding their inner rockstar during “live band karaoke.”

Each year, five CSU campuses receive the opportunity to co-host a Counselor Conference with the Chancellor’s Office geared towards High School and Community College counselors. On September 14 and 15, 2015, CSU Fullerton had its chance and kicked off the series of annual conferences held across the state. The Office of University Outreach and New Student Programs hosted the conference at the beautiful and newly renovated Riverside Convention Center. On the first day, 1200 High School Counselors from near and far arrived in Riverside to hear updates from the Chancellor’s Office, attend workshops on a variety of subjects such as Financial Aid, College Athletics, Student Services, Campus Specific Admission Practices, etc., and talk to representatives from all 23 CSU campuses at the College Fair. On the second day, nearly 300 participants from the Community Colleges braved the pounding rain to attend. Executive Chef, Brad Martin (featured on ABC’s hit culinary competition “The Taste”) made sure everyone’s taste buds were pleased as they networked and gathered invaluable information needed to provide to prospective students back at their home campuses. The event was hugely successful and our campus looks forward to hosting again in three to four years.

As students started their year at CSUF, University Outreach and New Students Programs in collaboration with Student Life and Leadership sponsored Titans Week of Welcome (WOW) in which our departments promoted a variety of welcome events to students during the first week of school. Events included departmental open houses, ASI welcome programs, and more. During the first week of the semester, there were five Information Stations strategically located throughout the campus where students could ask directional questions, find resources and even grab a snack. We are grateful to our partners in the Student Affairs division who volunteered to staff the stations. This service helped new students navigate around campus, find their classes, and access resources. A Snack Attack was held at the Irvine campus to welcome students there as well. Together, our staff volunteers made our students’ first days at CSUF more enjoyable.

On Saturday, September 26th, the Jumpstart Corps Members of Cal State Fullerton gathered for an all day kick-off training. This was a time of connecting, learning, and preparing for the year of service ahead. Jumpstart at Cal State Fullerton is a collaboration between the Child and Adolescent Studies Department and the Center for Internships & Community Engagement. As an AmeriCorps program our students serve a minimum of 300 hours working with preschool children during the year. This year the Corps members had the honor of having Dr. Eanes, Vice President of Student Affairs, joined them for part of the day. Dr. Eanes encouraged the Corps members to step out of their comfort zones and push themselves in the coming year. After her inspiring words, Dr. Eanes led the Corps members in reciting the AmeriCorps Pledge. This was a great way to begin the Jumpstart year!

WARC presents Taboo Talks on Titan Internet Radio, Mondays at 8:00am with hosts Kevin Kelly and Jessica Montez. WARC is excited to bring these group discussion topics to the radio. The radio show explores progressive ways of discussing difficult but essential topics pertaining to sexuality and gender. Taboo Talks is a sex and gender discussion group and now a radio show organized by the WoMen’s and Adult Reentry Center on the CSUF campus. The purpose is to provide a safe space to discuss all “taboo” things related to sex and gender-- including media, politics, feminism, school and personal relationships. The show intends to help dissolve the taboo of sex and gender subjects, and to promote healthy and productive communication skills.

On September 18th, the Women’s and Adult Reentry Center hosted “Back to School Night”. The event was an opportunity for our parenting and non-traditional students to bring their families and friends to see where they go to school. The night began with Dr. Jarnagin giving a welcome to all the participants by encouraging them to continue to pursue their dreams. Next, tour guides from New Student Programs gave participants a child friendly campus tour. When everyone returned we gave a 10 minute presentation on the center and our services. To conclude the evening we all attended the Titan men’s soccer game with tickets donated from Titan Athletics. This was a wonderful program with 71 participants and a collaboration across campus with our partners. There will definitely be 2nd Annual Back to School Night!

Visitors to the central quad received a free lunch and the opportunity to be heard on September 17 when ASI hosted Pizza with the Presidents from Noon to 1:30 p.m. Students asked questions, shared concerns, and provided feedback about their Titan Experience to University President, Dr. Mildred García, and ASI President, Michael Badal. Topics discussed included questions about traffic safety around the campus, support for the #blacklivesmatter movement at Cal State Fullerton, and better African American representation in the CSUF student population. In addition to the question and answer session, pizza was provided to all in attendance and a photo opportunity was available for students and campus community members to take a picture with their CSUF Presidents. The next Pizza with the Presidents event will occur in the spring semester.

Kristyn Grime, Titan Student Centers Governing Board Chair; Michael Badal, Associated Students President; and Dr. Dave Edwards, ASI Executive Director. The groundbreaking and photo opportunity followed, as well as a reception in the TSU courtyard. The expansion began in July with the demolition of the Garden Café and surrounding area. Once complete (currently projected for spring 2017), the project will add 27,000 square feet to the Titan Student Union.
