STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

There’s a lot to think about as you prepare for student life and we’re here to help you out with one of the biggest decisions - where to live.

We aim to provide accommodation for the majority of our first year undergraduates, with a choice of halls on campus. We also have a stunning new en suite self catering accommodation block available for first year students that opened in September 2010. A room in one of our residences will provide you with a secure base in a friendly and supportive environment, where you can rest assured that the accommodation is managed by people who have your best interests at heart.

If you are holding an unconditional offer and applying for accommodation, you will be contactedas soon as possible after receipt of your application and requested to sign a contract and forwardyour accommodation bond (see page 13).

If you are holding a conditional offer and applying for accommodation, you will be contacted afteryour examination results have been received and your place confirmed. You will then be asked tosign a contract and forward your accommodation bond (see page 13).

We can offer you a variety of accommodation on campus, ranging from newly built, self-catering en suite accommodation in self-contained flats to part-catered accommodation in traditional halls of residence, with some en suite rooms. We also have a bar, launderette, sports and leisure facilities on campus, including a sports centre and fitness suite equipped with the latest TechnogymTM range. Gym membership is available to students at a discounted rate.

All of the rooms in our halls of residence have internet access, and you can gain access at any time of the day or night from the 24 hour computer room in the Learning Centre.

All campus accommodation is accessed by a key, keypad or card-operated system which is backed up by 24 hour security.

We have 575 bedrooms on campus, so we are normally able to accommodate all our first year undergraduates who want to live on site. Our accommodation contracts are for 38 weeks and the price includes heating, electricity and regular cleaning, as well as personal possessions insurance for the duration of your contract.

ALL SAINTS COURT

All Saints Court is a recently opened £6m development of 198 bedrooms with en-suite and self-catered facilities opened in September 2010.

Every bedroom is fully en suite and there is a communal kitchen and dining/social facilities in each five/six person unit. Each bedroom has a single bed, fixed wardrobe, computer desk and chair, reading lamp and bookshelves.

Internet accessInternet access is provided in every bedroom in All Saints Court at no extra charge.

DisabilitiesTen of the rooms in this development are adapted to the needs of residents with disabilities and disabled parking spaces are available close to these rooms.

Access/SecurityAccess control to this accommodation is by swipe card on the front door and by security key to each unit and study bedroom. There is a 24 hour central security office on the campus and there are security patrols throughout the night. Contract/PricesThe accommodation contract will be for 38 weeks.*

ST. ALBANS

Our standard part-catered accommodation in traditional halls of residence offers an economical option. Each bedroom in a standard part catered hall has a washbasin, single bed, fixed wardrobe, desk, desk chair, easy chair, reading lamp and bookshelves. There is a communal snack kitchen on each floor, and bathrooms and shower rooms are shared by around six residents.

Access/SecurityAccess control to this accommodation is by swipe card to open the outer doors and security key for your bedroom. There is a 24 hour central security office on the campus and there are security patrols around the halls.

Contract/PricesThe accommodation contract will be for 38 weeks*, which includes a two week retainer rate over the Christmas/New Year vacation when you must vacate your accommodation.

The 2012/13 price for the standard part-catered halls with internet is £3,840. These prices will include all heating, lighting and regular cleaning, plus personal possessions insurance.

CateringThe contract includes a food allowance of £25 per week for 36 weeks. We operate a pay-as-you-go facility using swipe cards. Food can be purchased in the dining room or the atrium.

TRINITY CLOSE

En suite self-catered

Trinity Close is our recently built self-catering accommodation block, providing ensuite rooms with internet access. The accommodation at Trinity Close is made up of 14 two storey units, with six residents in each unit, plus two flats for senior residents, all around a central landscaped courtyard and located within a few minutes’ walk of the main building, where most of our central facilities are located. Every bedroom is fully en suite and there is a communal kitchen with breakfast bar and dining/social facilities in each six person unit. Each bedroom has a single bed, fixed wardrobe, computer desk and chair, reading lamp and bookshelves.

Internet accessInternet access is provided in every bedroom in Trinity Close at no extra charge.

ParkingThere is a maximum of 16 parking spaces available for the use of the residents of Trinity Close. This system is managed by an automatic barrier system via the college ID/access card. A permit will be required, details of costs and how to apply will be sent once rooms have been allocated.

Our standard self-catering accommodation offers an economical choice of accommodation in traditional halls of residence. This hall is very close to the main building and all facilities, with 44 study bedrooms on four to five floors, plus a flat for a senior resident.

Each bedroom has a washbasin, single bed, fixed wardrobe, desk, desk chair, easy chair, reading lamp and bookshelves, together with a larder fridge. Bathrooms and shower rooms are shared by around six residents.

Communal kitchens are shared by around nine residents and most kitchens provide two electric hobs, two sinks, a microwave, an oven, a freezer, recycling bins and a dining table and chairs. Internet access is provided in all rooms.

Access/SecurityAccess control to this accommodation is by swipe card to open the outer doors and security key for your bedroom. There is a 24 hour central security office on the campus and there are security patrols around the halls.

KIRKSTALL HALL En suite part-catered

Our en-suite part-catered accommodation, Kirkstall Hall, is always a popular choice with our students. Kirkstall Hall is on four floors with 25 study bedrooms on each floor, plus one flat for a senior resident, and is very close to the main building and all facilities.

Most bedrooms are fully en suite and there is a communal snack kitchen on each floor. Each bedroom has a single bed, fixed wardrobe, computer desk and chair, reading lamp and bookshelves.

Internet accessInternet access is provided in every bedroom in Kirkstall Hall at no extra charge.

DisabilitiesFour rooms in Kirkstall Hall are adapted for students with disabilities.

All our hall fees are based on a 38 week contract.

On campus fees include heating, electricity, personal possessions insurance, regular cleaning and internet access. Food allowances are included where indicated. The fee may be paid in full (in advance), in three installments (September, January and April) or in six installments by standing order from a parent’s or guardian’s bank account.

Students on Primary Education degree programmes should note that Semester 2 finishes two weeks later than all other courses. This is not included in the total charges given below and there will be an additional charge for this if required.

If you have a disability which you wish to be taken into account when your room allocation is being made, please tick the appropriate box on the accommodation application form and give details.

If you tick Box A, the information will be forwarded to the Disability Co-ordinator. When choosing the right type of accommodation for you, please take the prices above in to consideration to make sure that they fit in to your required budget.

When you are deciding whether to live in halls, or which hall to live in, it’s important to consider the following things:

• the cost of electricity, gas and water. If you move into private shared accommodation (e.g. a house of 5 students in Headingley) your rent does not include these costs and you would need to pay for them in addition to your rent

• the cost of some household goods – e.g. you will not need to find money to pay for cleaning products, cleaning utensils etc

• the cost of the internet – you can access the internet in rooms with no additional charge and without having to pay a monthly fee to an internet provider

• convenient payments – Leeds Trinity structures its payments for halls in line with your student funding so you can usually pay in 3 installments around the same time as you receive your student funding. You will receive a payment schedule letter with your contract

Resident students are advised not to bring cars on to campus, as space is very limited and parking is subject to a pay and display system. Parking permits will not be issued other than in special circumstances, for example because of a disability.

When you confirm that you want a place in our halls of residence, Leeds Trinity will ask you to pay a ‘bond’ of £250. This bond acts as a ‘retainer payment’ to secure your place in halls of residence. It is non-returnable if you do not take up your reserved place. When you move into halls, this bond becomes a ‘damage and rent deposit’. This means that shortly after you complete your year and move out, provided you have no outstanding money owing to Leeds Trinity for accommodation costs or damage costs, this money will be returned to you. Bonds are a common financial cost involved in renting and Leeds Trinity tries to keep its ‘bond’ costs as low and as competitive as possible.

YOUR BOND

When picking which hall you want to live in, as well as thinking about whether you want to cook for yourself and what kind of facilities you want, you should also think about which halls you will be able to afford. You need to consider if the funding you will receive will cover the cost of the hall you want. We hope that we have given you enough information for you to have an idea of how much student income (from loan and grant) you might receive and how much the different types of hall costs, what is included in those costs and what you will need to pay for in addition.

WORKING OUT YOUR BUDGET

When you are calculating your expected budget don’t forget the other things you will need to pay for on-campus such as:

• Car parking – if you bring your car you will need to pay to park it on campus. This will cost you around £10 a week (based on 2011/12 charges). Have a think about whether you want to bring your car with you – if you live on campus you can walk to all your lectures and Leeds Trinity runs a free shuttle bus that takes you round the nearby area

• TV Licence – if you live in halls you will need your own TV Licence. You are not covered by your parents’, the university or your friends next door!! A TV licence costs £145.50 for the year or you can pay for it quarterly. Log onto www.tvlicensing.co.uk for more information. A TV licence might be a useful going away present from your family or friends. Please note that we do not supply aerial sockets in bedrooms and a TV signal is not guaranteed.

• Personal goods – you will need to buy items such as toothpaste, shampoo, soap etc. How much you spend on these will depend on your own personal preferences

• If you are in ‘self catering’ accommodation don’t forget to bring with you pots and pans, cutlery etc.

Before you apply for your accommodation please read the information in this booklet carefully, paying particular attention to the terms and conditions on page 15.

Accommodation can usually be provided for all first year students who apply but students should note that self-catering and en suite accommodation is limited and may be oversubscribed. Should demand exceed supply, rooms will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. If we are unable to offer you accommodation, or you choose not to apply, please refer to page 16 for information on finding privately rented accommodation off campus.

When filling in your application form please indicate in order of preference the type of accommodation required, e.g. self-catered or part-catered (1 against your first choice and 2 against your second). Please rate all four choices in order of preference. Completed application forms should be returned to:

TERMS & CONDITIONSChristmas and New Year accommodationDuring part of the Christmas and New Year period, from Saturday 15 December 2012 until Wednesday 2 January 2013, those students in part-catered halls will not be able to occupy or gain access to their room. You may leave your personal possessions in the room and these will be covered by the insurance policy (within the limits of the policy). Students in self-catered halls will be able to stay in over the Christmas period should they wish.

Accommodation with a food allowanceStudents in part-catered accommodation will receive an allowance of £25 per week towards the cost of meals on campus. This covers 36 weeks of the contract, excluding 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year. No refunds will be given if this allowance is not used in full, however this credit can be carried over to the next academic year.

Hall feesThe contract is binding for the full academic year and covers the whole period from Sunday 23 September 2012 until Saturday 15 June 2013. You may only terminate the contract if you withdrawfrom your course, or another student is prepared to take over your contract. The changeover will only be approved by Leeds Trinity if there are no other vacant rooms in any of the halls of residence.* You will be required to pay your hall fees up until the end of the term should you decide to withdraw.

In special circumstances, and in agreement with student support, we will consider changing a room, depending on availability.*

No reduction in charges will be made if you choose not to occupy your room. This applies to all resident students, including those with a local home address.

* All room changes will be subject to an administrative fee of £25.

Residents’ responsibilitiesAs a resident student, you are fully responsible for the condition and content of your room and jointly responsible for the communal areas of the hall, in particular the fixtures and fittings.

Any loss, damage or excessive need for cleaning within the room (excluding reasonable wear and tear), or loss, damage or excessive need for cleaning within the communal areas of the hall which may be reasonably attributed, will be charged in full.

A bond of £250 is required when your contract is signed. The bond will be returned in full on termination of the accommodation contract unless:You decide not to take up the offer of accommodation before the start of term;There is a charge against the bond;The room keys are not surrendered;You owe debts to Leeds Trinity.

InsuranceAll student residents are responsible for the security of valuables within your room and LeedsTrinity is unable to accept any liability if you do not meet these terms. We will arrange a block personal possessions insurance policy through a specialist provider to cover the whole of the period of your contract for on campus accommodation. Insurance details will be posted out to students with the accommodation agreement.

After the first year, many of our students share accommodation in the popular areas of Horsforth (LS18), Headingley (LS6), Burley Park (LS4), Kirkstall (LS5) and Cookridge (LS16).

Leeds Trinity cannot accept responsibility for private accommodation contracts. You are strongly advised to have any contract with a private landlord checked by an appropriate professional before signing. Please contact the Students Union on the above number if you have any queries about looking for accommodation off campus. Please also bear in mind that when entering in to a contract with a private landlord you will not be able to claim back any rent for moving out for placements or withdrawing from Leeds Trinity, whereas this is possible when living on campus.

Self-catering standard

£3,230 You still need to buy and cook all your food with this type of accommodation, but it’s slightly cheaper than ‘Self-catering en suite’ (above) because it includes a shared bathroom with a few other students rather than a private shower room. Remember if you live in a shared house in your second year, you’ll be sharing a bathroom then too!!

Part - Catered en suite £4,020 These rooms have their own private shower room. A food allowance is included in this cost (£25 a week). This means you will be given a pre-paid food card when you move into halls. You can visit the dining room at Leeds Trinity and use your food card to pay for your food. You will probably still need to budget for a small amount of food in addition to your food allowance.

Living in halls in your first year is a great way to meet new friends, get involved with university life and make sure you make it to all your lectures on time! The cost of halls of residence differs depending on which hall you live in. Some halls have en suite bathroom facilities, some have grouped bedrooms with a shared living room and kitchen and some include a food allowance.
