PREFACE

The International Conference on Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions (SAHC) was first celebrated in Barcelona in 1995, followed by a second edition also in Barcelona in 1998. Since then, nine subsequent editions have been organized in different countries of Europe, America and Asia. The SAHC conference series is intended to offer a forum allowing engineers, architects and all experts to share and disseminate state-of-art knowledge and novel contributions on principles, methods and technologies for the study and conservation of heritage structures. Through all its successful past editions, the SAHC conference has become one of the topmost periodical opportunities for scientific exchange, dissemination and networking in the field.

During the last decades the study and conservation of historical structures has attained high technological and scientific standards. Today’s practice involves the combination of innovative non-destructive inspection technologies, sophisticated monitoring systems and advanced numerical models for structural analysis. More than ever, it is understood that the studies must be performed by interdisciplinary teams integrating wide expertise (engineering, architecture, history, archeology, geophysics, chemistry…). Moreover, the holistic nature of the studies, and the need to encompass and combine the different scales of the problem –the materials, the structures, the building aggregates, and the territory – are now increasingly acknowledged. Due to all this, the study of historical structures is still facing very strong challenges that can only be addressed through sound international scientific cooperation.

Taking these ideas in mind, the 12th edition of the SAHC conference aimed at creating a new opportunity for the exchange and discussion of novel concepts, technologies and practical experiences on the study, conservation and management of historical constructions.

The SAHC 2021 conference has been possible thanks to the large contribution of the scientific committee and reviewer panel who took care of selecting and reviewing the papers submitted. The contribution of the different sponsors and supporting organizations is also acknowledged. Above all, the conference has been possible thanks to all the authors who have contributed with very valuable papers despite the difficulties caused by the world pandemic. New editions of the conference are already planned in normal face-to-face formats which, in the upcoming years, will provide new opportunities for sharing valuable knowledge and experience on structural conservation, as well as for keeping alive and fulfilling the purpose and aims of the SAHC conference series.

KEYNOTE LECTURERS

Katrin Beyer, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland

“Seismic assessment of stone masonry buildings – from shake table tests on entire buildings to detailed micro-models of isolated elements”

Katrin Beyer is Associate Professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland and head of the Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics Laboratory (http://eesd.epfl.ch). After completing her undergraduate studies at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ), she worked for two years for the consulting firm ARUP in London, UK, on projects related to structural dynamics, impact and seismic analysis. She received her PhD from the University of Pavia, Italy. Her research interests include the seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete walls and of unreinforced masonry structures and large-scale structural testing. She is associate editor of the Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering and member of the editorial board of Earthquake Spectra, two of the major journals in her field, and since 2018 a member of the executive committee of the European Association for Earthquake Engineering. She is responsible for the revision of the masonry section within the European seismic design code EC8-Part 1 and was the recipient of the Melbourne School of Engineering & IT Visiting Fellowship (2017). She is an advocate of open science, publishing next to manuscripts also relevant experimental data and models (https://eesd.epfl.ch/data_sets/). Since September 2017, she is the chair of the Open Science Strategic Committee at EPFL.

Giorgia Giardina, Delft University of Technology, Netherlands

“Integrating remote sensing and structural modelling for the assessment of historic heritage”

Giorgia Giardina is assistant professor at the Civil Engineering and Geoscience faculty of the Delft University of Technology. Giorgia’s research aims at increasing urban resilience through the evaluation of buildings and infrastructure vulnerability. By integrating remote sensing data, experimental testing and computational modelling, she analyses the response of existing structures to urbanisation, earthquakes and climate change effects. Her research interests include remote sensing and computational modelling, risk and damage assessment, heritage protection, seismic vulnerability, tunnelling and underground excavations, and settlement-induced structural damage. Prior to joining the TU Delft, Giorgia was a lecturer at the University of Bath, a visiting professor at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a research associate and a Junior Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, where she was awarded a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship. She is a member of the International Scientific Committee on the Analysis and Restoration of Structures of Architectural Heritage (ISCARSAH) committee, an associate scientist at the 4TU Centre for Resilience Engineering (4TU RE) and a member of the Heritage Under Threat group at the Centre for Global Heritage and Development (CGHD).

Mariapaola Riggio, Oregon State University, USA

“Assessment and monitoring of historical timber construction: techniques, approaches and opportunities”

Mariapaola Riggio has a MS in Architecture from the University of Florence and a PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Trento, Italy. Faculty at Oregon State University since 2015, Dr. Riggio has an established reputation among the international scientific community, as an expert in timber buildings assessment. This reputation is built upon 15 years of involvement in international projects and organizations, such as ISCARSAH-ICOMOS (International Scientific Committee on the Analysis and Restoration of Structures of Architectural Heritage) and RILEM (The International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures), to advance scientific knowledge related to the use of wood in the built environment and encourage transfer and application of this knowledge.

She has served as working group leader in research networks, such as the COST Action - European Cooperation in Science and Technology, FP1101 “Assessment, Monitoring and Reinforcement of Timber Structures” (concluded in 2015). Evidence of her impacts includes: publication of 4 book chapters and 26 scientific papers, 6 of which published as state of the art reports and technical guidelines in peer-reviewed journals, and serving as Guest Editor for 3 journal special-issues on assessment and monitoring of timber structures.

Belén Riveiro, University of Vigo, Spain

“Laser Scanning and its growing applications in structural engineering: from 3D modelling to automated BIM generation of large structures”

Belén Riveiro is an Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Vigo (Spain) since 2012. She holds a MSc in Construction Engineering (2015), MSc in Forestry Engineering (2006) and a PhD in Environmental Engineering (2011). She has been an Associate Professor in Geomatics at Newcastle University (UK) in 2011-12, and was a postdoctoral visiting research fellow at the University of Minho (2012 and 2014), the University of Cambridge (2015) and at Delft University of Technology (2016). Her research is focused on the application of remote sensing technologies in structural engineering for the automated modelling, inspection and material characterization using inverse analysis procedures. She has been principal Investigator in several research and innovation projects (at national and international level) and coordinator of a European action on the resilience of transport infrastructure to extreme events (within the H2020 Framework Program). She has published more than 80 research papers in SCI-JCR journals. She is co-author of 9 patents and has supervised 7 PhD thesis. She is Associate Editor of Remote Sensing (MDPI), and Secretary of the ISPRS WGII/10 3D Mapping for Environmental & Infrastructure Monitoring for the period 2016-2022.

Jose M. Adam, Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spai

“Fatigue assessment of old riveted railway bridges: in-situ monitoring and laboratory testing of a real bridge”

Jose M. Adam is Professor at the Universitat Politècnica de València (www.upv.es), where he is engaged in teaching in the Civil Engineering School and the Department of Construction Engineering. He is member of the Concrete Science and Technology Institute - ICITECH (www.icitech.upv.es) and co-founder and partner of the spin-off company Calsens (www.cal-sens.com). Before joining the Universitat Politècnica de València in 2005, he worked as structural engineer and was involved in the design and construction of many large projects.

Prof. Adam’s research is devoted to resilient building structures, structural failures, strengthening, retrofitting and structural assessment. He is the author of over 60 papers in high-impact international journals and has participated in several research projects funded through competitive calls for a total of more than 5 million euros. One of his most significant recent achievement is the award of a Leonardo Grant by the BBVA Foundation for innovative ideas by relevant researchers. These grants are Spain’s most competitive awards with a success rate below 3%.

He is Editor of Construction and Building Materials (Elsevier), Associate Editor of the Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities (ASCE) and collaborates with five international journals as Editorial Board Member. Prof. Adam has been editor-organizer of six international conferences.

Paulo B. Lourenço, University of Minho, Portugal

“Resilience and cultural heritage buildings: earthquakes, blast and others”

Paulo B. Lourenço is Full Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Minho, Guimarães, Portugal since 2006. He received his degree in Civil Engineering at University of Porto in 1990 and his PhD in Civil Engineering at Delft University of Technology in 1996. He has been the Co-Head of the Institute in Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering since 2007 and the Co-Head of the Institute for Bio-Sustainability since 2013. He is experienced in the fields of non-destructive testing, advanced experimental and numerical techniques, innovative repair and strengthening techniques, earthquake engineering, and structural masonry. He is specialist in structural conservation and forensic engineering, with work on more than one hundred monuments and existing buildings, including 7 UNESCO World Heritage sites. He has been the leader of the Project Team responsible for the revision of Part 1 of the European code for masonry (EN 1996-1-1). He is the coordinator of the Advanced Masters on Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions (SAHC) since 2007, with alumni from 70 countries and Europa Nostra Award in 2017. He is co-editor of the International Journal of Architectural Heritage and co-advisor of the Conference Series on Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions. He has supervised more than 50 PhD theses and coordinate multiple national and international research projects. He has been just awarded an Advanced ERC Grant of 3.0 M€ to develop an integrated seismic assessment approach for heritage buildings.

Pere Roca, Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC-BarcelonaTech), Spain

“The new ICOMOS / ISCARSAH Guidelines for the Analysis, Conservation and Structural Restoration of Architectural Heritage. New concepts and approaches”

Pere Roca is Professor at the School of Civil Engineering of Barcelona, Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) since 2000. He is lecturer, researcher and consultant on building structures. He obtained his degree in Civil Engineering in 1985 and his Ph.D. in 1988 at UPC. His research is oriented to structural analysis, non-destructive and minor-destructive inspection, structural monitoring, seismic evaluation, and strengthening with focus on existing structures. A significant part of his research has been devoted to the development of criteria and tools for the conservation of monuments and historical structures.

He has participated in a large number of national and international research projects, and has supervised 18 PhD theses. He is an active member of the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Analysis and Restoration of Structures of Architectural Heritage (ISCARSAH), which he chaired during 2005-2008. He is lecturer of the Advanced Masters on Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions (SAHC). He is co-editor of the International Journal of Architectural Heritage since 2007 and co-advisor of the Conference Series on Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions. He has been consultant in over 100 case studies on existing and historical structures, including Romanesque and Gothic churches and cathedrals, medieval bridges and Modernist buildings. He has collaborated in the study of 9 UNESCO World Heritage buildings.

Enrico Spacone, University G. d’Annunzio of Chieti Pescara, Italy

“Recent applications of nonlinear analyses to unreinforced and strengthened masonry buildings”

Enrico Spacone is a Professor of Structural Engineering in the Department of Engineering and Geology of the University G. d’Annunzio of Chieti Pescara, Italy. He received his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at University La Sapienza of Rome in 1987 and his MS and PhD in Civil Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley in 1990 and 1994, respectively. In 1995 he joined the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he was first Assistant and then Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering. He was head of the Department of Engineering and Geology at the University of Chieti-Pescara, where he also served for six years in the University Academic Senate.

His early research work dealt with modeling of reinforced concrete structures under severe ground motions. His work later extended to a wide range of applications of nonlinear analyses to different structures (notably strengthened reinforced concrete structures, raw earth and masonry buildings, both historical and new). Among other topics, he is currently working on the seismic vulnerability assessment at the urban level. The presentation will focus on recent applications of distributed plasticity models to the study of the nonlinear response of unreinforced and reinforced masonry. Ongoing studies and correlations with more advanced models will be presented.
