SPEC IAL THANKS

Strawdog Theatre Company would like to thank the following entitiesand individuals for their time, talent and assistance with this production: Peter Anderson, Adam Belcuore, Carmichael’s Chicago Steakhouse, Dawn Gray, Jordan Kardasz, Rob Kauzlaric, Lifeline Theatre Company, Lookingglass Theatre Company, Mike Mroch, Northwestern University, and Kimberly Senior.

DIRECTOR ’S NOTE

When Abraham Lincoln famously declared “A house divided against itself cannot stand” he was, of course, referencing the crack splintering through the union between North and South. But on the simplest level he was talking about integrity. Structural integrity.

When we talk about the integrity of a building we speak in absolutes: If the integrity of a structure is compromised partially, it is compromised fundamentally. Human beings live in a world that demands compromise of us every day. But the more we compromise on the little things, day by day it gets easier for us to compromise on the big things. So when we compromise partially, we compromise fundamentally.

That’s what makes this play so heartbreakingly prescient. As we watch the façade of one political candidate splinter and crack, we also see the fundamental compro-mises that have led to today’s politics of division. The play might allow one couple the chance to set to work repairing their damaged union, but it’s hard for us as a twenty-first century audience not to stare instead at the growing gulf that we know will ultimately divide our own house into right and left, into red and blue.

Michael Dailey* (Grant) is happy to return to the Strawdog stage where he was last seen as Eamon in Aristocrats. Other

Strawdog credits include Marathon ‘33, Detective Story, Measure for Measure, Julius Ceasar, Merchant of Venice, and Hurlyburly, among others. He has enjoyed working with many great companies around town including About Face, Shattered Globe, Steppen-wolf, Eclipse, The Black Ensemble, and Defiant Theatre, to name a few. He is a graduate of Illinois State University and would like to inform you that the Redbirds are flying high.

Samantha Gleisten (Mrs. Draper) is truly delighted to be working with Strawdog, a com-pany she has admired from afar for

some time now. A proud company member with the Hypocrites, she has been seen in many shows with them including No Exit, Our Town, 4.48 Psychosis, Miss Julie, The Bald Soprano, and Marat/Sade. Sam is also a com-pany member with Barrel of Monkeys and has worked with some other great Chicago theaters including Writers’, Steppenwolf and Redmoon. When not on stage, Sam teaches theater and directs children in plays. Thanks to Matt and Vivian for understanding and supporting her theater addiction.

Kate Harris (Mrs. Alexander) has worked on a few Chicago stages over the years. Some have been The Hypocrites, Lifeline, Stage Left,

Bailiwick, Steppenwolf, and Pyewacket (serving as the Artistic Director for nine years). Regionally she has appeared

with St. Louis Repertory Theatre, Lyceum Repertory Theatre, Play Makers Repertory Theatre and Off-Broadway at The Duplex, and 29th Street Repertory. Ms. Harris has received three Joseph Jefferson Non-Equity nominations and received a Joseph Jefferson Non-Equity award for Outstanding Actress in a Principal Role for her work as Annie Wilkes in Pyewacket’s Misery. Her adapted production of Francis Ford Coppola’s screenplay The Conversation enjoyed a healthy successful run off Broadway two years ago and would like to get back to writing some time soon. Ms. Harris is happy to be working with Strawdog and extends her love to her husband, the extremely talented Timothy Curtis.

Jim Heatherly (Judge Jefferson Davis Alexander) is excited to be making his debut with Strawdog Theatre Company in

the timeless political tale State of the Union. Jim has spent a good deal of time in front of and behind the footlights in the past ten years, working in more than forty-five productions around the Chicagoland area. He was most recently seen as Herr Schultz in the Hypocrites’ Jeff Recommended production of Cabaret. Thank you to Geoff, Michael, Stephanie and the rest of the Strawdog production team for this outstanding opportunity. Annamae, I found the muse!

BF Helman (Conover) has been little seen since the demise of the late, lamented Defiant Theatre. But he has been greatly heard

with the AFTRA/SAG Radio Players and Unshackled. And - please - go out and vote.

Maria has also made crazy props with The House Theatre, Congo Square Theatre, Steep Theatre, LiveWire Chicago Theatre, and Theo Ubique. Maria loves being a props lady, and has much appreciation for her family and friends for supporting her through her theatrical endeavors. If you would like to buy Maria a beer, and talk about how props make the world a better place, feel free to contact her at [email protected].

Nic Dimond* (Artistic Director) has been a company member since 1995. He has directed almost 20 productions at Strawdog during that time. Other directing diversions include various projects with the Bohemian Theatre Company, the Vittum Theater, the Next Theatre, Victory Gardens, Lakeside Shakespeare Theatre, Collaboraction, the Chicago Department of Cultural Af-fairs, Titan Productions, question?mark productions, the Shawnee Playhouse, and Chicago Dramatists Workshop. Previous and current production management positions include Ellen Under Glass with the House Theatre of Chicago and One False Note with Plasti-cene, as well as serving as the produc-

tion manager at Lifeline Theatre since the fall of 2006 on such productions as The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Mark of Zor-ro and Neverwhere. She has also served as the Assistant Production Manager at Theater on the Lake since 2004.

She holds a B.A. in Philosophy and French with a minor in theatre from Concordia Col-lege in Moorhead, Minnesota.

Mike Przygoda* (Composer) is a native Chicagoan who votes early and often. When he was eighteen, he almost went to go study political science but then went on to become a composer instead. Now, finally (with-out a scandal), those two passions have merged. Thank you to the band for their excellence and dedication of time, Andrew for recording/mixing the score, and Frank Dawson for reinvent-ing my view on jazz (RIP).

Diana Raiselis (Assistant Director)is a junior theatre major at Northwestern University, and is thrilled to be working with Strawdog for the first time. She’s also assisted on Cabaret (The Hypo-crites) and Peter Pan (Northwestern), and looks forward to directing the upcoming world-premiere of Thank You, Everything! on campus this winter. Big thanks to Geoff & Co. for this wonderful experi-ence, as well as Layercake, the Lunatics, and the family for their support & love.

Michael Stanfill (Lighting Designer) holds a BFA in Lighting Design from Southern Oregon University and just completed the MFA Design Program at Northwestern University. Before moving to Chicago, Michael freelanced around the Pacific Northwest design-ing for theatre, dance, live music, and the occasional Roller Derby bout. In

theatre and dance he served for several seasons as the Resident Lighting De-signer for The Oregon Cabaret Theater, ArtAttack Theater Ensemble, and The Portland Ballet. Favorite designs include The Glass Menagerie, Closer, Amadeus (ArtAttack), Forever Plaid, Santaland Di-aries, Tick, Tick, Boom!, Five Guys Named Moe (Oregon Cabaret Theater), Mass: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers, The American Pilot, The Hand-maid’s Tale (Northwestern University).

Andrew Wheatley (Sound Designer) is a Chicago-based freelance sound designer and composer, and he is thrilled for his second collaboration with Strawdog, the first as a designer! After graduating from the University of Evansville with a degree in Theatre Design and a minor in Music Compo-sition, he moved to Chicago in 2009 to serve as the audio apprentice at Steppenwolf Theatre Company for a nine-month term. Since then he has been writing and playing music, sound designing for all manner of folks, exploring the city, and enjoying the awesome Chicago summer!

Hank Boland* (Managing Director) collaborated with the ensemble as a playwright in the creation of The True Ballad of Fall’s Blessings (2005), contrib-uted to WirelessFour (2005), and wrote Radio Theater Six (2007). In 2006 he was asked to create a writing initiative for the Strawdog Ensemble, now known as THE HIT FACTORY! Hank was asked to join the ensemble in 2008, and is proud to be a member of this artistic family. Hank’s earlier works are pub-lished by Dramatic Publishing. Hank began his relationship with Strawdog in 2000 as an audience member. (Just like you!) Want to get more involved with Strawdog? Let’s talk! Get in touch at [email protected].
