ARTISTIC D IRECTOR ’S NOTE

As I embark on my first season as Artistic Director of Strawdog Theatre, I feel nothing but excitement and see nothing but opportunity. We are fortunate to work with some of the best artists in town and on three plays by some of the finest writers in the history of theatre. Coupled with our lively and eclectic late-night series, Strawdog productions offer the kind of challenging and exciting theatre that has made storefront theatre famous across the city and the nation. Furthermore, with one of the strongest ensembles in the city, Strawdog is poised and ready to offer the premiere storefront experience: big drama in a small space.

I sincerely hope you enjoy this production, helmed by the much-heralded director Kimberly Senior. We are proud to have assembled a team of amazingly gifted and hard-working artists to present such a beautifully haunting play. I am honored for this production to be the first of my tenure. Please come back and see our next production of Sherwood’s The Petrified Forest, directed by Strawdog artistic associate Shade Murray, and my own debut production of Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi. Lastly, we hope you can stick around or come back for our highly energetic and inventive late-night events – which usually follow each of our performances. With such an ambitious season, there is a lot of excitement at the ‘Dawg.

Here at Strawdog things are happening and I am glad you are here to witness it. From the appointment of our new Artistic Director to our fortified Late Night series, Strawdog is on the move. We at Strawdog have been working diligently to bring to you, our community, a wide array of theatre opportunities this season. I am truly grateful to all of you for your support and patronage.

Season 24 will bring to us Pinter’s Old Times, our Annual PhonebookFundraising Performance on November 21, The Petrified Forest, and finally The Dutchess of Malfi directed by our new Artistic Director, Brandon Bruce. The Strawdog family welcomes Brandon and is excited by his enthusiasm and passion he brings to this role.

I would like to thank our Ensemble member and exiting Managing Director, Hank Boland. Hank, you are a wonderful asset to the Strawdog family. On behalf of the Board I would like to thank you for all of your hard work and dedication as Managing Director. Your tenure as Managing Director has left Strawdog more organized, more art centered, and overall stronger as an operation and Company.

I would also like to genuinely thank Artistic Associate and Director of ‘Old Times’, Kimberly Senior for her dedication and support to Strawdog over the past year. The Strawdog Theatre Company is stronger today because of her artistic and leadership contributions.

Abigail Boucher *(Kate) is honored and thrilled to be working on Old Times with such a talented group of people. A Franco-American

actress, Abigail recently returned to the States after having spent the last few years in Paris, France where she did some theatre of the oppressed and discovered on-camera work. In Chicago, Abigail was last seen performing in 20% Theatre Company’s summer festival Snapshots. Last Spring, she performed in The House Theatre’s Miami remount of The Sparrow. Other acting credits include Irina in Strawdog’s award-winning production of Three Sisters, Jesse in 20%’s production of Marsha Norman’s ‘night, mother, and the pharmacist in Brecht’s Puntila and his man Matti directed by Nathan Allen. Abigail also recently worked on Recessive, a short independent film written and directed by Logan Kibens, which has been screening in festivals all over the world. Abigail is a graduate of Smith College, MA, and a proud Strawdog Theatre Ensemble member. Beijos João.

Michaela Petro*(Anna) is very happy to share 1/3 of this lovely cast. A proud member of Strawdog’s ensemble, she was last seen on the

mainstage remounting Red Noses as Scarron. As a company member of Wildclaw Theatre, she fulfills roles as berserkers when necessary. However, you can see her about town as Tragedy Ann with Madame Barker’s dames, M with The J&M Comedy Hour and if you’d like to hear more, you can buy her a drink after the show. After Old Times, she’ll be performing in Wildclaw’s next show Kill Me at the Athenaeum. Ernie.

John Henry Roberts*(Deeley)is very happy to be back on the Strawdog stage, where he’s been an ensemble member since 2004. His Strawdog

credits include The Good Soul of Szechuan, Cherry Orchard, Aristocrats (Non-Equity Jeff nomination, Actor in a Supporting Role), Three Sisters (After Dark Award, Outstanding Ensemble), and Detective Story (Non-Equity Jeff Award, Ensemble). Other credits include Three Days of Rain with BackStage Theatre Company, The Moonstone and Wuthering Heights at Lifeline Theatre, Wilson Wants It All with The House Theatre, Leaving Iowa at The Royal George, To the Green Fields Beyond at Writers’ Theatre (Jeff Award nomination, Ensemble), and Measure for Measure at Next Theatre. Later this season he can be seen in Lifeline’s production of Hunger, opening February 2012. He would also like to brag about his critic/daughter Ada and her editor/mother Jennifer (see adagrey.blogspot.com).

Kimberly Senior (Director) returns to Strawdog, where she is an Artistic Associate, after directing The Conquest of the South Pole, Uncle Vanya, Cherry Orchard, Three Sisters, Fuddy Meers, and Knives in Hens. Chicago credits include: The North Plan (Steppenwolf), Madagascar, The Overwhelming, and The Busy World is Hushed (Next Theatre), Bad Dates and Mouse Cop (Fox Valley Repertory), Bug and The Pillowman (Redtwist Theatre), Thieves Like Us (The House Theatre), All My Sons and Dolly West’s Kitchen (TimeLine Theatre) among others. Regional: A Few Good Men (Peninsula Players), Mauritius (Theatre Squared, Fayetteville, AR). Rachael Alulis (Assistant Lighting Designer) is excited to be working with Strawdog Theatre Company. She recently moved back to Chicago after a completing a fellowship at Hedgerow Theatre and is happily settling back into her hometown. Her previous lighting assistant experiences include Watership Down at Lifeline Theatre and An American Tragedy at Hedgerow. Her most memorable lighting designs are The Violence of My Affection for The Brigata and The Cherry Orchard at the College of the Holy Cross.

Aly Renee Amidei* (Costume Designer) is happily designing costumes for Kimberly again after working together on Fuddy Meers, Three Sisters, Cherry Orchard, and Uncle Vanya. Aly’s been an ensemble member at Strawdog Theatre for...awhile. She will also be designing Petrified Forest, and helping with the makeup for Duchess of Malfi this season. Previous Strawdog shows include Marathon 33, Tooth of Crime, Detective Story, and Red Noses. Aly also designed the set for Lie of the Mind and was nominated for a Jeff Citation in makeup design for Master and Margarita. She is the Artistic Director of Wildclaw Theatre where she has designed all of the costumes for their shows and adapted their most recent play, J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla. Aly also designed the costumes for Lifeline’s The Count of Monte Cristo featuring some fellow ‘dawgs on stage this fall and is busy in pre-production on Wildclaw’s next production, Scott T. Barsotti’s Kill Me opening on February 13th. You can also see the notoriously stage-shy Aly performing as a foley artist In Wildclaw’s Deathscribe, our Fourth Annual Radio Play Festival on December 5th at the Mayne Stage.

Brandon Bruce* (Artistic Director)is super jazzed to be embarking on his first season as Artistic Director of Strawdog. Most recently, Bruce served as Interim Artistic Director of Indiana’s Shawnee Theatre where he directed The 39 Steps and The Fantasticks this past summer. As Artistic Director of Chicago’s BackStage Theatre, Brandon directed the Joseph Jefferson Award-winning production of The Skin of Our Teeth, The Ruling Class, the new work Denise Druczweski’s Inferno, and Terra Nova. As the Iowa Arts Directing Fellow at the University of Iowa (where he received his MFA in Directing), Brandon directed Reefer Madness! The Musical and Akarui (IRAM Award for Outstanding Direction of a New Work). In 2009, his production of The Little Foxes at Chicago’s Shattered Globe received three Joseph Jefferson nominations including Best Production. In 2006, Bruce received the Orgie Award for Best Director for his staging of Tango at Chicago’s Chopin Theatre. Other directing credits include The Scene (Iowa Summer Rep), Catch-22 (Signal Ensemble) and Picasso at the Lapin Agile (New Leaf Theatre). Anita Deely* (Voice/Dialect Coach)Anita’s recent adventures as a dialect coach include: Pornography at Steep Theatre Company, New Electric Ballroom and Pumpgirl at A Red Orchid Theatre, and Ghosts of Treasure Island at Adventure Stage. Anita last appeared in Master and Margarita at Strawdog (ensemble member), Louis Slotin Sonata with A Red Orchid Theatre, and Aunt Dan and Lemon and Memory of Water with BackStage Theatre Company. She’s also worked with Apple Tree, Next and Noble Fool, among others.

Brett Gould (Assistant Stage Manager)is new to Strawdog and theater production. He moved to Chicago in 2009 after receiving his BS in communication from Illinois State University in Normal. He’s enjoyed

Kate Hardiman (Dramaturg) is a freelance artist from Chicago and is currently studying directing at Columbia College Chicago. She has worked as a freelance technician and lighting designer for Metropolis Performing Arts Center, lighting coordinator for Forest View Education Center, and technical director and scenic designer for Just South of Broadway Theater Company and Summerplace Theater.

Christopher Kriz (Sound Design)works nationally as a composer and sound designer and is happy to be working at Strawdog again, having recently designed Conquest of the South Pole. In Chicago, Chris has designed over 200 productions area for companies including Northlight, Steppenwolf, Goodman, Victory Gardens and TimeLine. Regional credits include the national tour of America Amerique (Jena Company) and the upcoming The Fall of the House (Theatre Squared). Some recent Chicago credits include The Count of Monte Cristo (Lifeline Theatre), Festen (Steep Theatre), Romeo and Juliet (First Folio), Around the World In 80 Days and Bad Dates (Fox Valley Rep), Educating Rita (Shattered Globe) and Elling (Redtwist). Dan Laushman (Master Electrician)From a family of biologists and botanists, Dan decided spending his days in dark theaters sounded like a good path. After moving from his college town of Kalamazoo, MI, Dan is ecstatic to be working on his first Strawdog production. When he’s not hanging around Chicago, you can find Dan lighting and fixing

things on the national tour of Girls Night: The Musical. Thanks to my friends and family for dealing with my crazy schedule, Jen, Jon, and Pete, the fantastic cast and crew of Old Times!

Marti Lyons (Associate Director)recently directed the Chicago premiere of Brainpeople by Jose Rivera, assistant directed As You Like it for Gary Griffin at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, attended the Lincoln Center Directors Lab in NYC and directed Ouija Play for Strange Tree Group’s Trunk Show. In addition to continuing to co-curate the International Voices Project, this fall Marti will direct Children of a Lesser God at Oakton Community College. Marti also serves as the Literary Manager and Company Dramaturg for Lookingglass Theatre Company

Sean Mallary* (Lighting Designer)Sean has been a proud ensemble member and resident designer going on 9 years. By day Sean is the assistant lighting supervisor at the Goodman; by night he designs for theatre and dance all over the city. HIs most recent credits include Henry V at the Oak Park Festival Theatre, Twist of Water with Route 66 and Watership Down up at Lifeline. He’d like to thank Kimberly once again for the opportunity, and for challenging us to think about our intimate space in an exciting new way. Finally, as always he wants to thank his beautiful bride, Eilleen, for all her humor and support.

Michael Mroch* (Scenic Design) is thrilled to become a part of the Strawdog Ensemble. He has earned a BFA in Directing and Scenic Design from Columbia College. Danni Parpan (Assistant Props Designer) is thrilled to be working with Strawdog once again and even more excited to be Assistant Props designing! She graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2010 where she received her BA in Theatre Acting. She has directed a series of Sketch Comedy shows from Joe Jane’s 50 plays and 365 Sketches, as well as assistant directed several shows under the direction of Kimberly Senior both at Strawdog and Act One Studios. Her most recent acting credits include Ilse in “Spring Awakening”, Hattie in “Laundry and Bourbon”, and Roberta in “Jack, or the Submission”. Love to TVW and Garbo.

Jen Poulin (Stage Manager)is excited to be working with Strawdog for the first time. Jen has had the pleasure of working with a number of Chicago companies, including Eclipse Theatre Company, BackStage Theatre Company, WildClaw Theatre, Serendipity Theatre Collective, Steep Theatre Company, Mary Arrchie Theatre Company, and Silk Road Theatre Project. D. J. Reed (Props Designer) D.J. is happy to be back at Strawdog designing props. Previous Strawdog shows include The Master and Margarita, The Good Soul of Szechuan, and Uncle Vanya. D.J.’s props can also be seen with Emerald City’s upcoming Snow White and Alexander and the Horrible No Good Very Bad Day. Costumes have also become a part of D.J.’s world and can be seen in an upcoming production of The Rocky Horror Show playing at the Underground Lounge. Tyler Wilsey (Production Manager) is stoked to be playing in the big leagues this season with Strawdog as Production Manager. She has worked with them before as ASM/APM on Red Noses (Original and Remount), St. Crispin’s Day, The Good Soul of Szechuan, Uncle Vanya, and The Conquest of the South Pole. A graduate of Columbia College’s directing program in 2010, she has worked around town stage and production managing for Promethean Theatre and Redmoon, as well as directing for NWAC and 14 @ Stage 773.
