From the Editor
Thanks to Cheryl Yeoh who edited the earlier editions of the
Howler this year and a lot of this one. Due to work pressures
she has had to stand down as editor.
This edition has been somewhat hastily edited with the help of
Lloyd and Rhett Stephens but will hopefully inform members
about club activities and coming events in particular the NODC
trial.
This is one of the major functions hosted by the club each year
in association with the VCA and details of how you can either
participate or volunteer are explained by the Club Secretary
and also Trial Secretary Glenys Barnes on page 7.

President’s Podium
No Training on September 13th 2015.
It is hard to believe that we are only a few weeks away from our
Open Obedience and Rally Trials. Once again we are asking
members to volunteer on the day to help make the Trials
successful.
Volunteers are needed to help set up and take down the rings, man the
canteen, help with serving the judges and stewards. If you are able to assist in
any way please put your name down on the sheets in the Clubhouse. Even if you
can only give an hour of your time on the day your help will be very much
appreciated.
Renewals of membership commence from October 1st so don’t forget to bring
your dog’s current vaccination certificate when you come to the desk to pay
your renewal. This makes life much easier for the ladies on the desk.
Applications for titles awards close on Sunday 8th November. If you have been
successful in any discipline with your dog this year, make sure you fill in the
forms at the desk along with the correct paperwork to ensure you receive your
award.
Many thanks to Barbara Van Meurs for taking on the role of Howler editor.

Remembering the Dogs of The Titanic
By Brandy Arnold
April 15th will mark 103 years after the famed “unsinkable ship” struck an iceberg in the
north Atlantic, sinking on its maiden voyage to America. But, did you know there were at
least 12 dogs aboard the Titanic? It is suspected that many more dogs were on board that
day, but because they were listed as cargo in the ship’s records, most details have been
lost. It has been said that Titanic had excellent kennel facilities, even planning a dog show
for April 15th, the very day that the ship went down. While the world is remembering the
tragic events of April 15th, we’re taking a moment to honor and remember the dogs of
the Titanic. As reported by Yahoo! News, of the 12 confirmed dogs on the Titanic, only 3
survived the shipwreck – all of which were small dogs, 2 Pomeranian and 1 Pekingese,
easily hidden inside a blanket or coat and carried into the limited space on lifeboats.
The ship’s captain, Capt. Smith, has been seen photographed on board Titanic with his
dog, a large Russian Wolfhound named Ben. However, Ben only spent one night on the
ship, before it left the dock, and was returned home to Capt. Smith’s daughter. In a
particularly touching account, one passenger, 50-year old Ann Elizabeth Isham, was said
to have visited her Great Dane in the ship’s kennels daily. At one point, Isham was seated
in a life boat, but when told that her dog was too large to join her, she exited the boat. Her
body was found several days later, clutching onto her dog in the icy waters.
Only first class passengers were permitted to bring dogs on board the ship. A few of those
passengers were, Helen Bishop and her Toy Poodle named Frou-Frou, millionaire John
Jacob Astor and his Airedale named Kitty, Robert Daniel and his French Bulldog, Gamin de
Pycombe, William Carter and his family brought along two dogs – a King Charles Spaniel
and an Airedale, Harry Anderson was joined by his Chow-Chow (aptly named Chow-Chow),
and many other 4-legged passengers who remain unknown, including a Fox Terrier named
simply, Dog. Helen Bishop survived the Titanic, later reporting that her dog, Frou-Frou
latched onto her dress with his teeth when she left him in their cabin. She reportedly said,
“The loss of my little dog hurt me very much. I will never forget

Captain Smith on Titanic’s
deck with his Russian Wolfhound, Ben
how he dragged on my clothes. He so wanted to accompany me.”
In a fortunate turn of events, one passenger, Charles Moore of
Washington, DC, had planned to transport up to 100 English
Foxhounds via the Titanic, but made arrangements on a different
vessel at the last minute. Two other dogs avoided disaster when
they disembarked with their owners at Cherbourg, the ship’s first
stop after leaving Southampton. It’s hard to imagine being any
part of this terrible tragedy, even harder to imagine having to
make the decision to leave your dog when the ship began to
sink… Would you have been able to do it?

BITING IS NORMAL
Written by Glyn Burnup who is grateful for help to Frances Hammer for her support
I hope the first instalment of Paws for Thought in June was of some help to you, in trying to see the world from your dog's perspective.
This time the dreaded Biting is our topic.
I will start by stressing that you must Never leave any dog alone with children or vulnerable others. Be
extremely wary about putting your face near your dogs and stress to any children not to do so........even if they look so cute and cuddly....the dog that is.
Surprise, surprise dogs bite! They use their mouths as we use our hands, not just to eat. Try telling a
curious child not to touch, an impossibility. I know this sounds counterproductive but you don't want to stop your dog from biting, what we need is for your pup to be taught how HARD to bite. So we teach Bite-Inhibition. Pups normally learn this by play fighting with their littermates. This puppy play biting is an essential lesson for later life.
This process has a number of phases, none of which involves a rolled up newspaper or shouting at your dog. This can easily make your dog fearful of you and be counterproductive due to loss of trust. Bite Inhibition is a complex issue and my page too short to encompass all the tricks and strategies available to you. So let me share with you some advice from my go to book, "How to Teach A New Dog Old Tricks" by Dr Ian Dunbar. However, you should know that there are many exceptional experts to call on... Use the web, ask your instructors and even visit your local library for reference.
Ian Dunbar, in his chapters on Bite-Inhibition starts by asking us to imagine what might happen if your pup bit it's play mate too hard. We replicate this behaviour by a yelp and leaving the play area for a very short time (a moment or two) to lick our wounds. This way of mimicking what might happen in a litter play situation. Return and start to play again. You must be the judge of how loud the 'ouch' is as some dogs will be more sensitive than others. When you do this the play area must be a safe place where the dog can be left alone without any problems. Many dogs become excited when playing so restraining or punishing the dog can make the animal even more excited and complicate the issue. Puppies love to play and by withdrawing this wonderful past time for short spaces of time, the dog will learn to bite more softly. It takes Patience.
We can continue this type of reaction even, when the dog has learnt the first stage of Bite-Inhibition, to encourage no jaw pressure is used at all. The pup, of course, thinks their human is very sensitive and they must be extremely careful when playing with them.
Hand feeding your pup is an important part of teaching your dog to have a gentle mouth and to be comfortable to have human hands near their mouth and food. Do not be tempted to take the food out of a bowl once given as this can cause stress rather than a fun experience. You can even develop games were items are swapped for food.
I cannot stress enough that not teaching your dog how and when to
use their mouth can be fatal... Council By-Laws can be very expensive to
fight... if you get the chance.

GLENYS BARNES What is Trialling? Club and Trial Secretary
NODC OBEDIENCE & RALLY TRIALS 2015
Obedience and Rally Obedience is a dog sport. At Obedience and Rally Obedience trials it showcases the ability of the handler and dog to work together as a team with precision. The skills of the
handler and dog progress through several classes or levels which demonstrates the training required to achieve each level.
In order to compete at a trial the handler and dog must be registered with Dogs Victoria. The handler must complete an Entry form and send it to the Trial Secretary of the Club hosting the Trial, prior to the closing date for entries.
For the host Club, trial day is a very busy day, there is a lot of planning that goes into making the day run smoothly. Many people, the Trial Secretary, the Club Committee, the Ground Manager help with the planning. Plus many Club members are required to help on the day to spread the workload with setting up and packing up at the end of the day.
For competitors it is a long day as well, arriving in time to take the dog for a walk getting to know the ground, collecting your catalogue numbers for the various events you have entered. Setting yourself up in a good vantage spot to watch the ring/s you are competing in. Waiting for your turn in the ring to be assessed by the Judge, in the individual exercises and the group exercises. With good teamwork you will have earned a pass in your class and you go home with that all important pass card, a qualifying ribbon and a place getters ribbon or trophy.
How you can help
Back at the clubhouse dining and other facilities are
provided for the Trial Judges and associates all day.
Outside the club a barbeque and coffee and drinks
will be provided. Volunteers willing to assist please
see Barbara van Meurs or leave your contact details
at the front desk.
Help is also needed on the ground including setting
up and taking down rings, parking stewards, selling
raffle tickets and clearing up at the end of the day.
Volunteers please see Glenys or leave contact details
at the front desk.

Puppy Experiences !!
It is important to expose your pup to as many new experiences as possible
before 12 weeks of age - he will accept it all much more calmly. So, take him for
short trips in the car, have friends handle him, introduce him to other well vaccinated
dogs and generally expose him to the big, wide world. He will be better adjusted in
the long run.
Many of the problems owners have with their dogs can be traced to a
misunderstanding by the owner of a dog’s behaviour and a misreading of the
signals. Problems such as aggression, over -protectiveness, destructiveness,
fearfulness and other undesirable behaviours can be corrected with the proper
behavioural advice.
In most cases obedience classes are an important part of establishing a happy and
relaxing relationship between you and your puppy and helping it handle social
situations.
Dachshunds are ideal pets for small children as they are already stretched and pulled to
such a length that the child cannot do much harm one way or the other......
