It’s an exotic journey into adventure, complete with history, spirituality, and a mesmerizing musi-cal score. Don’t miss Strathmore’s latest artistic col-laboration with award-winning filmmaker Prashant Bhargava, award-winning composer Vijay Iyer, and the International Contemporary Ensemble. We sat down with Bhargava to talk about his debut docu-mentary film, Indian heritage, and collaborating with Vijay Iyer.

Kite, Rite, and Radhe Radhe: Talking with Prashant Bhargava

This is a true collaboration between composer and filmmaker. How did it begin?I had made a film called Kite, a very long journey that took me seven years. I was trying to immerse myself in the culture of India—“the old country” for my family—and I became focused on a kite fes-tival because, well, you have a piece of paper and a string, and from that you are able to create so much joy. I was able to capture that joy—and the ritual, the sense of community that had fascinated me—and Vijay approached me because I had cap-tured the Holi festival in such a colorful way.

What connects Radhe Radhe and Rite of Spring?Radhe Radhe is a piece that is more in the spir-it of what Rite of Spring did. Rite of Spring was made by Russian exiles, adapted from Russian folklore—and presented to the rich in Paris where it incited riots! It also influenced Pina Bausch and Martha Graham—and that visual, emotional, non-dialogue nature offers incredible parallels with Radhe Radhe. Radhe Radhe is not about the Best Marigold Hotel version of India. It’s confrontation-al. It was shot in a way that’s akin to Jay Z’s “99 Problems.” It’s electric, primal.

Different from your debutfilm, Kite?Kite was celebratory, about the healing power of families and nourishing the soul. Making that film was a long journey…a way to truly connect. My parents came here about 40 years ago, and I think art has been a way of sorting out my own cultural identity and what it meant to exist between two cultures.

Because you started out as a graffiti artist…I was among the first Asians in hip-hop, and graf-fiti and hip-hop inspired me. Now, I have a techni-cal background in computer science—I did what I was supposed to do in college—and I played clas-sical music for seven years as a kid—piano. But in Radhe Radhe—the editing, the colors—you can really see the influence of graffiti and of hip-hop. In commercial work there’s a limit to what you can say, but in the studio you have access to the nar-rative, the humanity.

What was it like filming in India?Chaotic! It’s about filmmaking, but it’s also about how you associate with people. While I speak Hindi, people realize pretty quickly that I’m from somewhere else…but generally they open up and trust pretty quickly. I spent three years in India: It’s exhilarating. It really requires you to open up in a way that shooting in the US doesn’t. I was trying to find those real people who actually are those characters on screen; 90% of the cast were non-actors, and I’d always pair an actor with a non-actor, so Radhe Radhe is documentary in style, but cinematic as well.

And how does the film work with the music? It’s been a pleasure working with Vijay, he’s such a great talent. While I edited [the film] to “Rite of Spring” he was able to compose for himself and the International Contemporary Ensemble in a way that is just remarkable. There’s a lot of nu-ance, a lot of emotional subtlety, and Vijay was able to bring in a sense of the actual environment by using percussion. It’s been a joyful and chal-lenging way of going back and forth.

4 Levine’s Maryland Campus at the Music Center at Strathmore

Education is what we do. In addition to weekly sessions, opportunities include student recitals, master classes, competitions, and informal collaborations.

Performance is what we create. Offered in an intimate and friendly setting, Levine Presents is our highly interactive performance series, where our faculty loves to engage with the audience.

Community is what we are. Levine provides scholarships, collaborative programming with other arts organizations, and creates opportunities to come together in music.

Students of all ages and abilities are invited to join us for an exciting new year of private lessons, group classes and special events. Private lessons, available on more than 20 instruments, begin Sept. 2, 2014. Group classes begin Sept. 15, 2014. To learn more call 301.897.5100 or visit www.levinemusic.org
