Dear Friends,

When a building is constructed, the first work that is done is related to the foundation. Without a solid foundation, a building will not stand. The same concept applies to children and their education. Without a solid foundation on which to build as children grow, they cannot stand: Achievement gaps widen, self-esteem crumbles, and failure seems unavoidable.

At Stratford Friends School, we build that foundation with our students. I say “with,” because we do not hand it over to children, nor do they construct it on their own. Just as on a job site, constructing a foundation is a collaborative, team-based effort. Otherwise, it is not strong enough to withstand the pieces it will later hold.

Our teachers work with students to discover how their needs can best be met. That begins the foundation for learning. This is followed by layers of instruction, appropriate to the child’s ability and needs. As pieces are ever-carefully put into place, the foundation grows and strengthens. It becomes stable and unshakeable, strong enough to support the knowledge that is to come in high school.

Vital to this is an expectation—and one of the school’s core values—that I shared with our students on opening day—never give up. Not only do we expect our students to never give up, in turn, they expect us to never give up on them. Together we construct and strengthen the foundation that will hold their future.

In order for Stratford Friends to lay that foundation with our students, we too need support and a strong foundation. Our foundation comes from you and your financial support of Stratford Friends. Without your gifts to the annual fund, we could not successfully do the great things we do with our students.

The current economic climate has made your gifts that much more important to us. We see the results of difficult economic times, yet you still give. And, we keep going—building and strengthening our foundation. And, we are still growing, each year enrolling more and more students. Your support makes this possible.

By supporting the annual fund, you directly impact the daily lives of our students. Likewise, your gifts demonstrate that our community cares. This not only matters in the day-to-day, practical sense, it also matters when we seek foundation and grant support for projects. Most recently, for example, we were fortunate to receive grant funding for our iPad initiative—every student and every teacher now has an iPad. This is just one example of the impact your gifts have on our students every day.

I sincerely thank you for your generosity toward Stratford Friends and ask that it continue. After all, we are not only building each child’s foundation for learning, we’re building the foundation for their future, the foundation for our future. And what’s more important than that?

Sincerely,

Timothy P. Madigan, Ph.D.

A MESSAGE

FROM THE

CLERK OF THE

BOARD

In last year’s annual letter, it was noted that the Board partners with the administration in planning the school’s long-term future. Tim and his staff with the support of the faculty have prepared and presented a strategic vision for the school over the next five years. This document not only provides high level direction but describes specific actions to be completed in this school year that are aligned with achievement of the school’s longer term objectives.

As an illustration, our long-term vision recognizes that we need to extend the reach of our services and thoughtfully grow the student population while maintaining the learning environment that makes our school so effective. We can achieve this growth, in part, by now improving our marketing and communication of the specific and unique value we can provide to those targeted groups in the community who need our services.

Also noted in last year’s letter were areas in which your Board of Trustees recognized it needed to make improvements, one of which was the stewardship of members of the community who may be interested in serving on our Board. Last spring we made structural changes in the operation of the board, reducing the number of meetings, entrusting more responsibilities to our five standing committees, and clarifying the role of a Trustee. Current Board members are now actively engaged in a process to ensure that the school will have the right board membership to support its mission over the long term. It remains our expectation that you will see the benefits of this effort in the coming year.

Paul Ryan, Clerk of the Board of Trustees Parent of Thomas Ryan ‘95

The school year 2011-12 saw the start of several new student traditions and social events, including:

• Monthly Meeting for Business • All-school Video Tournament • Afterschool Movie for Blue, Green, Purple & Red Teams • An Ice Cream Social for Yellow Team and Middle School • A Middle School Dance

Planning has begun for these events this year.

Moving Forward with New Traditions

As an off shoot of this year’s new Meeting for Business, a social event planning committee was born. One of the first ideas to come from this committee of Middle School students was to host a dance, complete with a live DJ.

The committee decided to open the event to similar, local schools Woodlynde, Hilltop, and Delaware Valley Friends School. Faculty and staff came to chaperone and helped students raise funds to cover costs by selling soda, pizza, chips, and other snacks. A great time was had by all and plans are underway for the next dance.

Alumni Day, April 2012, at Stratford Friends was quite the event this year! New to the schedule, the school hosted the first-ever Alumni vs. Faculty Face-Off Kickball game.

After a short campus tour led by Middle School tour guides, the entire school took to the fields.

With current students cheering on the sidelines, the Alumni took an early lead and were able to hold off the faculty, eventually winning the game 12—9.

We love having our alumni visit and hope to see you all back at school soon! Check the Stratford Friends Facebook page and school website for updates on school events!

1st Annual Middle School Dance

1st Annual Alumni vs. Faculty Kickball Game

Extracurricular Activities2011-12 saw the introduction of several new afterschool clubs and

an all-school choir. The Chess Club was run by Head of School, Teacher Tim. This was so popular that it will again be offered on a year-round basis! Drama Club was run by parent Mary Simkins. Not only did the students practice their acting skills but they also collaborated on a short play that was performed for the student body! The Tennis Club was run by parent David Furst, and Gym Club was run by parent Dana Mullaney. Yoga Club was headed by Alex Merrick, Development Office.

The newly formed choir was an elective activity led by Music Teacher Julia. Students meet every Friday to practice singing while expanding their repertoire, learning dance moves and improvisations. Students faced their fears of performance as they prepared for the holiday concert, the spring concert, and by performing outside the school at Garrets’ Way. Weekly rehearsals during the last period on Fridays were a great way to end the week. Afterschool clubs for fall 2012 include: • Drama Club with parent Mary Simkins (for Red, Yellow

and Middle School)• Cookie Club with parent Jane Roomberg• Art Club with Teacher Sara (Green, Purple, and Red Teams)• Chess Club with Teacher Tim (Red, Yellow, and Middle School

Also being offered are two new sporting activities: a Cross Country Team open to all students coached by Teacher Tim, and a Soccer Club for Yellow Team and Middle School students coached by parent Andy McDermott!

New Venue for Golf OutingLast fall, October 2011, we hosted the 22nd Annual Golf

Outing at a new venue—Radnor Valley Country Club. The day was beautiful and the venue was appreciated by all participants. We raised a record amount for scholarship through sponsorships and players.

Thank you to the many players, sponsors, and volunteers. We hope to see you again at Radnor Valley, October 15, 2012, for the 23rd Annual Golf Outing. This year’s event is raising funds for our new iPad initiative.

In June, we celebrated the first class to graduate from the Middle School. The excitement was felt all year, as a committee of parents, faculty, staff, and board members meet throughout the year to plan the special event.

Graduation began with Meeting for Worship, a time that family and friends used to praise the graduates, to reflect on student experiences and growth at SFS, and to express their gratitude to Stratford Friends for making such an impact on students’ lives.

Also on the program were several impressive instrumental and vocal performances by graduating students, choreographed and led by Music Teacher Julia Haines.

Admissions Director, Gretchen Vare, recognized this year’s group of Student Tour Guides, honoring them with a certificate for their dedication and service to SFS.

As is the long-held tradition at SFS graduations, each student received an anagrammatic poem — based on their name — and composed by the faculty and staff. Each poem offers insight into each student’s unique gifts and characteristics.

Head of School Tim Madigan presented each student with a traditional diploma, and each 8th grade student gave a farewell speech that had been well-prepared and practiced with the help of Teachers Nancy Ironside and Kathy Wolfe.

Presentation of diplomas was followed by a luncheon for all graduates, their families and guests, and SFS faculty and staff. During lunch, the 8th graders presented a video montage of their memories and experiences at Stratford Friends.

It was a moving graduation, full of joy and pride for students’ many accomplishments and a few tears as students’ prepared to leave the beloved halls of Stratford for new schools, new experiences, and new friends.

We look forward to hearing from our newest alumni, the Class of 2012, and seeing them at our next alumni event and on Stratford’s Facebook page. Stay connected! We miss you already.

The First 8th Grade Graduation!Grandfriends’ Day In May, more than 100 grandparents and very important friends came to experience life at Stratford Friends with their favorite student(s). Visitors enjoyed tea and cookies and a presentation about our Math Program by Teacher Debbie Koutsiouroubas. Students and guests spent time in their classrooms, showing off their teachers, friends, and favorite activities. It was a great day for sharing!

Parents’ Association 23rd Annual Auction The Parents’ Association hosted the 23rd Annual Auction at Paxon Hollow Country Club in March. The event was a great success thanks to the endless help and support from our Auction Chair Mary DeCarlo, Auction Committee—including Chris Friel, Lia Gorman, Maureen Henderson, Tom Malecki, Edith Pearce, and Sarah Schmader, SFS parents, faculty and staff.

The auction had several new additions that contributed to this year’s success:

• A live band performed during cocktails and silent bidding, • A video featuring students and staff was shown before the start of the live auction • Childcare was provided at the school for auction attendees.

With a great display of silent and live auction items, Stratford Friends held the most successful auction ever, raising more than $25,000!

On the last weekend of September, we held the annual Family Fall Event and our 1st Annual 5k Race/Walk at Ridley Creek State Park. Our first ever 5K race/walk was well attended by family, friends, faculty and staff. The race course was lined with families and friends who did not run/walk but were there to cheer on the participants and show their support for Stratford Friends.

The Annual Family Fall Event took place immediately after the 5k Race/Walk. The event had a great turnout as well and the attendees enjoyed delicious food contributed by SFS families. Fun activities included gourd painting, sack races, a tug rope, and a soccer game led by some SFS parents. The kids enjoyed winning prizes from the Plinko Game and many are now sporting Stratford Friends water bottles and drawstring bags!

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and support the 5k Race/ Walk and the Fall Event. We had a great time, mingling and building new friendships within our community!
