Strangles in Horses Symptoms:
Nasal discharge Decreased appetite Increase in Temperature
Swelling of lymph nodes -‐‑Can obstruct the airway Puss secreted from abscess -‐‑Abscess ruptures in 7 days and 4 weeks
Prevention:
Vaccinate against Strangles Diagnostic tests -‐‑Blood samples -‐‑Temperature (taken
twice a day)
Biosecurity protocols -‐‑Quarantine new horses upon
arrival -‐‑Take temperature of newly
arriving horses -‐‑ Have separate brushes and
mucking equipment for quarantined horses -‐‑Change clothes after visiting
another barn -‐‑Do not share equipment with
other stables
Treatment: Prevention is the best treatment -‐‑The vaccination isn’t 100% but
can help lessen the symptoms Treatment options -‐‑Antibiotics -‐‑Drain fluid in lymph nodes -‐‑Surgical hyovertebrotomy -‐‑Done to open the lymph
nodes -‐‑Flush ruptured abscesses
