At least stabilize it. I don't understand how demolition is even an option.

This is a very valuable historic building and should be saved. Hopefully the residents will band together anddo the job.

Beverly Evans MesserBelfast, ME 04915Sep 21, 2013

It is a shame that Fergus Falls fought so hard to have this building built and now they're fighting so hard totake it down. I've never seen a piece of history quite like it and it should be preserved at all costs. Please, don'tlet this beautiful building be ruined like so many other Kirkbride buildings. Thank you.

Vicki RichterOttertail, MN 56571Jul 5, 2013

Too many kirkbride buildings are gone forever. Danvers was a beautiful kirkbride and most of it is gone.

Everyone else has covered what I came here to say. Why destroy a historical building that can still be useful? The fact that it is a historical building should be enough to keep it! I hope all of our effort isn't for anythingand that we can save this amazing place!

I used to live in Fergus Falls and I trained as a human service tech there at the kirkbride building in 1982 andmy ex husband worked there as well. My aunt worked there too her name was Jean Boen and a neighbor alicelyng. So this needs to be saved and used in some way other than to be torn down. It would be a shame to teardown a beautiful campus as the fergus falls state hospital as been there its a landmark for the city as well. Ithink there could be many uses for the kirkbride as well as the other buildings as a resort hotel as fergus fallsarea is good for all sorts of activities thru out the year Take a look at some of the other suggestions that youhave received as well. thank you for listening.

Carol LaValleRoyalton, MN 56374Apr 3, 2013

Minnesota doesnt always perserve our history. I believe that we have to keep the good and the bad. We ashumans connect through our history. this state has so many places that could be utilized in so many ways.look at the old schmidt brewery in st paul for an example. Use it for education, stores, a historical society, etc.a combination of things. 4-H? girl scouts? a boys and girls club...all the above!

Just found out that my great-grandfater (Herbert Sargent) died there in 1919. After reading the history of thehospital and it's buildings, i have come to believe that my great-grandfather recieved the best care availablefor the times. Thank God for people like Dr. Kirkbride, who saw value and didn't dehumanize the mentally ill.My own grandfather hid the truth from our family and we didn't even know who our great-grandfather wasuntil recently.

They give guided tours on Fridays. If you have a big group, you can also have them on other days of theweek. I was fourtnate enough to be with a group just yesterday to have a tour. Wonderful old building andgrounds so hope they can find a use for it. The tour guide said she was booking out into Aug. already. Thebuilding also is not heated so they do stop them when it gets too cold. Hope you get a chance to go-it wasgreat and educational!!

This is an important building in Minnesota! So many historic buildings can be rehabilitated to become fullproductive members of society again! What is green or sustainable about all that beautiful architecture to endup in the landfill. The city council should be recalled for making such a short sighted and destructivebehavior! Shame! I am signing on behalf of my mother who is 91 and has no computer. I grew up in Grand Forks. My mom'sdad and my dad's mom were successfully treated at Fergus. The building surely can be put to other usefulpurposes now. Here in the DC area we have seen the controversy over St. E's. Surely Minnesota can set adifferent tone with its still useful older buildings.

I was born in Fergus, and four of my five children graduated from FFHS while we lived there. Having livedon both east and west coasts now, I feel that the midwest often fails to recognize the importance of historicallysignificant buildings in favor of "progress." Do not be short-sighted. Iunderstand the pros and cons to tair it down its just very upsetting that ppl can't find another use for the bigbuilding and the other cottages I wish they could be turned into duplexes or something like that... plus its abeautiful and misterious place to go eat lunch or just take a walk and just the history it holds should beenough! These Kirkbride buildings cannot be replaced or replicated, I find it ludicrous that anyone could even considertearing one down, they are part of our nation's history. In Europe things like this would not occur, theyactually value their history over there. Danvers State Hospital's Kirkbride was razed in Massachusetts a fewyears ago, and all that did was waste a beautiful building, and replace it with a shoddily and corruptlyconstructed one that will need to be replaced 20 years from now (if that). Please consider saving this building, there are many uses for them and there are not many left.

A cynical person would believe that FF city officials made their decision about the future of the RTC a longtime ago, and were determined to rationalize their predetermined choice ever since. Their apparentunwillingness to seriously seek out ways to find a way to reuse this unique FF feature suggests an ulteriorsingle-minded motive. One that involves $$ ultimately lining some crony's pocket? Please prove me wrong.

I was born in Fergus Falls. I have always loved this building. I live in a neighborhood in Uptown Minneapoliswhere in the 1960s they thought it would be a good idea to tear down the victorian homes in the name ofprogress. It failed. This complex is priceless........ It is what gives Fergus Falls it distinction from "anyplace" USA.. It will be ashort distance to "noplace" if the administration moves to demolish. Only the foolish community will makethe choice between historic preservation and economic development. Economic development and historicpreseration go hand in hand. The city of Fergus can effectively utilize its historic built environment to meetthe economic, social and cultural needs of its citizens well into the future. The first and last thing that standsbetween any of us and a better place to live is the belief that such a future is possible. If we don't believe it ispossible, we will not aim for it. If we don't aim for a better community we are certain to not get there. Tearingdown the Kirkbride will not make our community better. What makes a city great----- is livability. A truelylivable city is one that makes us feel personally connected to it in a meaningful way. It is hard to feel that sortof connection to a place that has no distinctive character. Our Kirkbride complex is this the distinction. This isnot only our inheritance but our legacy. I ask the city to press the reset button. Lets start a visioning sessionwith the community. We need an extension. Richardson Complex indicated it took six years- It is also500,000 square feet. This community needs unity.

A reuse for the Kirbride that would serve our community and be beneficial to its leading employers andbusinesses while also definitely benefitting both the region and the state is growing in attention and seriousconsideration by parties across the nation. It is Vitally important that we present a singular commitment as acommunity to the preservation of the facility and its rededication to an economic development driver to theoutside world. Worthy ends are severely damaged by evident local negativity or lack of commitment whenviewed by those outside the community. The actions of our public leaders speak so strongly. Let's cometogether and make good things happen.

We have a Kirkbride in Traverse City, MI. They have turned what was once a deteriorating giant old buildinginto a gorgeous multi-use building, full of condos, shops, offices, and restaurants. It is some of the mostdesireable real estate in the city now. Knocking down this building is pretty much the worst thing you coulddo if you want any tourism or modernization of your city. This place matters.European countries would never think of tearing this down . Fergus Falls is a communitythat is concerned about the environment and has embraced recycling efforts. We do this because we are goodstewards. It is the right thing to do!!!!!! It is the right thing to do on so many fronts............ We need to look atfinding new life for our historic inventory. These are assets to our community. The greenest building is theone that is reused. Finding adaptive reuse within the building envelope will provide a catalyst for additionaldevelopment in Fergus Falls. We need jobs in Fergus and this horseshoe complex can be the perfect businessincubator. Economic Development and Preservation can work hand in hand.

I am a photographer working on a documentary of historic mental institutions and the history of mental illnessacross the U.S. (www.theemptyplaces.com). I was fortunate enough to visit Fergus Falls State Hospital acouple of years ago and photographed/documented its history. Of the 50+ institutions that I havephotographed across the U.S., the one in Fergus Falls in unique and an extremely important piece of history inthe United States. It is an incredibly well preserved Kirkbride, something that is very rare. This integrity isimportant architecturally as well as historically. While I understand that such old buildings often cost a lot tomaintain, I believe this piece of history is worth the cost to preserve. While the history of mental illness cariesmany stigmas with it, and these old buildings can carry a dark past with them, these are our American versionof Castles. They are stunning. Please don't destroy an important piece of American history!

It is so sad that we arewilling to spend so much money on waste, yet willing to throw away our heritage. I can think of so manyways to make this campus an asset to the Community of Fergus Falls, and revive these buildings. Since Iworked with someone who had shock treatments there, and lost her memory of her childrens' childhoods, Itook note of the comments about it being haunted - but if Sioux Falls can re-use the stockyards, it seems thatthis could be a real attraction for the community. And Central Minnesota.

I grew up in Fergus and the State Hospital is part of who Fergus Falls is. When I come to town and see thosetowers from a distance, it is so cool and makes me proud that we have that in Fergus. . If you take it away,Fergus really has nothing of character. There is so much potential for Fergus and its growth, it is really hard tobelieve that the city council is so blind that it is sad to even think of tearing it down. It scares me to think ofthe people on the city council that are suppose to represent the people - not their own agenda. If that can't bedone I hope when re-election time comes around that there are changes to be made. I hope other people willmake their voices heard on this also.

It needs to be celebrated and narrowminded decision makers need to share this magnificent structure with the world, instead of trying to hide it!Just opening it up and exposing it can generate tourism money for the city but the city would rather have theplot of land that attracts nothing and leaves the city boring and forgotten.

It's the same in my city as they're more interested in building condosinstead of saving a similar structure just because it happens to have a scenic view worth $$$$$$. Part of myfamily settled in the area over a century ago so I'm not just some do-gooder looking for a cause. A touring architect once told the Schmidt's that the Kirkbride was a 400 year building. So, why destroy a 100+building when there are so many more years to find a use for it. It's history and architecture are worth far morethan that!! Take a note from the European countries. Image what we all would be missing out on if theColossuem, Acropolis, Sistine Chapel, and countless others would have been destroyed just because someonedidn't care. If you destroy the building, that will be your legacy to FF. Is that what you want your legacy to be.Future generations will remeber this generation as the ones who didn't care enought to save a beautiful pieceof architecture and historical landmark. I am grateful for city leaders and those who have put forth much time and effort to find a way to develop thisproperty. I believe with time the RTC campus can be repurposed. I believe there is a way to work with thestate to extend the timeline indefinitely; that and working with other entities such as the Historic Preservationcan eliminate any concern for tax payer burden. That argument does not present very well following a muchdisputed arena project.

Please preserve these classic old buildings!!! They represent bygone times, and have character that most newmodern buildings are seriously lacking. Most of those are sheet rock and vinyl siding and won't last more than40 years anyway. It is unfortunate to hear of historic buildings being destroyed because of financial situations. Those are temporary, historical preservation can be permanent!! Please help keep our world's architecturaltreasures around for all to enjoy!!!! Buildings of different eras represent the life and times of so manygenerations. Historic Preservation is essential!!

This is a beautiful building, it could be restored and used for many things such as apartments, rec center, school, or many other things, something for kids and families to go to maybe roller skating rink/theatre/community center. Maybe even a venue for weddings where the entire building can be used forceremony reception and much more. So many people that care! That tells the story. Our community needs a low cost indoor flea market space forall of the artists and crafters to show off their wares! Combine that with the tours that people travel manystates to attend, and the Fergus economy grows! I may be wrong, but isn't saving the Kirkbride a good thing?

Very much hoping this historical landmark means more to the city of Fergus Falls than the few dollars thatcould be made off of the destruction of hundreds of years of history.

Nichole RoellAlexandria, MN 56308May 4, 2012

In our consumptive, throw-away society, how wasteful to destroy something so beautiful and potentiallyuseful. This striking facility helped draw us to move to Fergus Falls. We thought, what a forward thinkingcommunity that would have such a unique and historic place. Whereas every community looks the same afterwidening residential streets and adding all the popular chain stores and restaurants, the Kirkebride is part ofFergus Falls' identity. The right thing to do is rarely the easy thing to do -- save the Kirkebride and associatedbuildings, make them useful, and we are living history.

I grew up going to school in Fergus Falls. Everyday on the way to and from school, our bus would pass theKirbride. When I got my drivers license, I continued taking this route. Almost everyday of my life, I wouldtake in the beauty of the amazing architecture of the building. To me, it is what makes Fergus Falls my hometown. I cringe at possobility of telling my future children and grand children that there used to be amagnificent building in its spot. Don't take away the history of our town. It should be protected andcelebrated!

Tracey KiehlFergus Falls, MN 56537May 4, 2012

I have never been so disgusted as I am at the thought of thecity council of Fergus Falls making a decision tonot only destroy a Historic National Treasure... but using 7 MILLION dollars in Minnesota TAXPAYERmoney to do so .. in this economy. For shame on all the Fergus Falls city council members. Detroying thisbuilding and creating 'green space' is the most ridiculous decision and shows that the Fergus Falls city councilhas no respect for history. 'Green Space' will not bring tourists to our city.

Susan Kay WildungFergus Falls, MN 56537May 4, 2012

Think how many people attend the weekly tours...If the Kirkbride portion of the building was repaired, cleaned and various types of stores were opened, people would come, just to see the building...Save theKirkbride. Once it's gone,,,,it's gone..

I work as a Historic tour guide at Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in WV. These amazing Kirkbridebuildings are a treasure, not just to the few states who still possess them, but as a testament to how far we havecome in the treatment of the mentally ill. Though I do not live in Minnesota, ALL of these magnificentbuildings are important to me as well as others. Please consider this petition to save Fergus Falls. Please don'tdemolish one of these last remaining Kirkbride buildings.
