MEDIA AVAILABILITYThe Big South Conference will conduct its week-ly coaches teleconference on Tuesdays, except for Wednesday, October 12, for members of the media throughout the season. Chuck Priore is scheduled to speak from 11:00-11:10 a.m. For information on how to get on the call, please contact (631) 632-7125.

INTERVIEW POLICIESAll interviews with coaches, staff and student-athletes must go through the Athletic Com-munications Office. Requests must be made 24 hours in advance. Most interviews will take place at the conclusion of practice unless otherwise indicated. No student-athletes phone numbers will be given out, and no interviews will be conducted on the day before a game.

NEW NAMES FIND THE ENDZONEStony Brook scored three touchdowns against UTEP. One of the usuals, Brock Jackolski scored his 10th rushing touchdown, but there were two unknown names to the box score. Backup quarterback Kyle Essington rushed for a two-yard touchdown, and Jonathan Coats, who was playing in his first career game for Stony Brook, recovered a fumble and ran it in 14 yards for the score.

PORTER PICKS TWOAfter suffering a season-ending injury at South Florida last season, D.J. Porter made a return to game action in a big way against UTEP. Porter made two interceptions, including one in the end zone that came on fourth and goal from the 2.

GETTING OVER THE HUMPStony Brook will look to capture an outright Big South title after earning a share of the Champi-onship the past two seasons. The Seawolves will host rivals Liberty and Coastal Carolina, who were picked first and third, respectively, in the preseason.

STONY BROOK ON TVThe Seawolves will be on TV four times in 2011. Time Warner Cable Sportsnet will broadcast the game at Buffalo. The Lafayette Sports Net-

work will televise the Leopards-Seawolves on September 24, ESPN3.com will show Coastal Carolina-Stony Brook on October 29 and The Flames Sports Network will broadcast Liberty-Stony Brook on November 19.

THE FINER POINTS OF STONY BROOK• Stony Brook is one of New York’s four Univer-sity Centers (Buffalo, Binghamton and Albany)• Stony Brook is a member of the Association of American Universities, one of just 61 research institutions in the United States and Canada.• Stony Brook’s enrollment (24,594) is greater than UTEP’s (22,106).• Stony Brook research scientists have discov-ered many ground breaking things, including the bar code, the cause of Lyme Disease and the link between smoking and emphysema.• Stony Brook is 60 miles east of Manhattan.• Notable alumni include Patricia Cowings (first American female astronaut), John Hennessey (Stanford President), Joe Nathan (Minnesota Twins) and Jef Raskin (developer of the Macin-tosh project for Apple).

EXPERIENCE IS KEYThe Seawolves graduated five starters from last year’s team - Left Guard, Center, Right

Guard, Linebacker and Strong Safety. Cedrick Moore will switch from cornerback to safety with the return of D.J. Porter, who was lost for the season in the South Florida game. Grant Nakwaasah will replace Julian Glenn at strong side linebacker. On the other side of the ball, Joe Faiella, the starter in all 11 games at left tackle, will move to his right at left guard. Scott Hernandez will be the starting left tackle. Phil Vournazos likely will be the starting center and a host of players could lineup at right guard this season, including Cody Precht, Joe Danaker and Fernando Diaz.

TRANSFERRING TO STONY BROOKThe Seawolves welcomed FBS transfers Fernando Diaz (Pittsburgh), Masengo Kabongo (Maryland), Dan Mulrooney (Boston College), Kevin Norrell (Washington State) and Junior Solice (Rutgers) to this year’s squad.

POSITION PREVIEW - RBsOpposing defenses knew the Seawolves’ run-ning game was one of their strengths, but no one could have predicted that they would have two 1,000-yard rushers . . . who also happened to be newcomers from Stony Brook’s Long Island rival, Hofstra.

Senior captain Brock Jackolski (Shirley, N.Y.) is one part of a two-headed monster with junior Miguel Maysonet (Riverhead, N.Y.). Jackolski, a preseason All-Big South selection, rushed for 1,029 yards last season, averaging a team-high 6.9 yards per carry, and Maysonet, a preseason All-American and All-Big South selection, ran for 1,128 yards and a team-best 12 touchdowns. “Obviously this is the strongest position of our team, top to bottom,” Priore said. “This has been and will continue to be the focal point of our offense.” The rushing attack, which accounted for 218 yards per game to rank eighth in FCS last sea-son, will be helped by sophomore Vincent Polo (Wantagh, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman Davon Lawrence (Central Islip, N.Y.). Polo carried the ball 20 times for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Lawrence played an important role during his

GAME 2 • Sept. 10, 2011 Stony Brook Seawolves Football Game Notes • 3

redshirt season, serving as a scout back. It came as no surprise that Lawrence rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns in the spring game.

POSITION PREVIEW - QBsSenior captain Michael Coulter (Yorba Linda, Calif.) has been a steady, consistent force in the pocket for Stony Brook in his two seasons. He’s started each of the 22 games he’s appeared in, throwing for 32 touchdowns against 20 intercep-tions. “Michael is a student of the game,” Priore said. Coulter is approaching 4,000 career pass-ing yards despite playing in a run-heavy offense. Coulter will be backed up by junior Kyle Es-sington (Chino Hills, Calif.), who played in four games last season. The third quarterback on the depth chart will be junior Lyle Negron (Ba-kersfield, Calif.). Negron passed for 1,830 yards and 13 touchdowns at Bakersfield College last season, leading the Renegades to an 8-2 record and a top-five ranking in Southern California.

POSITION PREVIEW - FBs & TEsTwo experienced blockers -- sophomore Matt Faiella (Freehold, N.J.) and junior Chris Fe-nelon (Bellerose, N.Y.) -- will continue to play an important role. “This position is a vital cog in our offense,” Priore said. “These two guys have game experience and aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.” Similar to the fullback position, the tight ends at Stony Brook play an important run-blocking role. Priore hopes juniors Brett Arce (Coalinga, Calif.) and David Shukri (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) continue to provide running room. Redshirt freshman Tanner Nehls (Richmond, Texas) adds depth.

POSITION PREVIEW - WRsThis particular group of wide receivers is the strongest since Priore became head coach in 2006. Senior Matt Brevi (Tampa, Fla.) ac-counted for 668 receiving yards last season, nearly doubling his total for 2009. Brevi tied for the team lead in touchdown receptions with five and became one of Coulter’s go-to targets.

Junior Jordan Gush (Richardson, Texas) also accounted for five touchdowns, catching 39 passes for 525 yards. Adding depth to the position are sophomores Chris McMillan (New York, N.Y.) and Myles Campbell (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), junior Kevin Norrell (Los Angeles, Calif.) and redshirt freshmen JeVahn Cruz (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) and Bryant McAdoo (New York, N.Y.). McMillan played in 10 games last season, starting one. He’ll use his 6-5 frame to outjump opponents. One of the fastest players on the team, Campbell uses his speed well on special teams. Of all the receivers on the depth chart, Norrell may be the most intriguing. A highly rated recruit from Southern California, Norrell was one of Washington State’s best receiv-ers, starting six games as a true freshman. He caught 11 passes for 124 yards and returned kicks and punts. Cruz is a multi-purpose tal-ent who is short in stature but large in ability. McAdoo joins McMillan in using his long frame to leap over defenders.

POSITION PREVIEW - O-LINEThe part of the team that was hit hardest by graduation will be reshuffled to fit needs. Senior Phillip Vournazos (Buena Park, Calif.), whom Priore describes as a natural center, will take over at the position for Paul Fenaroli. Senior captain Joe Faiella (Freehold, N.J.) will move from left tackle to left guard, a position Priore says is more natural for Faiella. Sophomore Scott Hernandez (Fort Worth, Texas) won the starting left tackle job during the spring and sophomore Michael Bamiro (Tobyhanna, Pa.), who started 10 games at right tackle, is an imposing force who will return to protect Coulter’s front side. Redshirt freshman Cody Precht (Centerport, N.Y.), senior Mario Dattilo (Centereach, N.Y.), junior college transfer Joe Danaker (Germantown, Md.) and recent Pitts-burgh transfer Fernando Diaz (Bronx, N.Y.) will compete for the starting spot at right guard. Adding depth will be junior Eric Mauler (Edge-water, Md.), whom Priore could pencil in at either guard position or center. The backup

tackles could be sophomore Elias Martinez (Long Beach, Calif.), who moved over from the defensive line, and junior Steven Watts (San Clemente, Calif.), a great pass protector who earned all-conference honors in the junior college ranks at Saddleback College. “I feel confident with this group of guys,” Priore said.

POSITION PREVIEW - D-ENDSThe defensive line returns plenty of experience, starting with senior captain Ryan Haber (Lafay-ette Hill, Pa.). A preseason All-Big South selec-tion, Haber is a two-year starter and a disruptive force on the outside. Senior Roosevelt Kirk (Oakland, Calif.) played in 10 games last season and will be counted on to use his speed and size to break down the pocket. Adding depth to the line are sophomore Alex Probasco (Manhat-tan Beach, Calif.), junior college transfer Bryce Brantley (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and redshirt freshman Kevin Hauter (Moriches, N.Y.). Sophomore Adam Nowak (Philadelphia, Pa.), the team’s starting long snapper, adds depth.

POSITION PREVIEW - D-LINEA two-year starter at defensive tackle, senior Michael Marino (Middle Island, N.Y.) has been an imposing weapon in blowing up the A gap. Junior Jonathan Coats (Elmira Heights, N.Y.) has added weight to his frame with an offseason spent in the weight room. Senior Andrew Nel-son (Uniondale, N.Y.) forced two fumbles last season with his imposing 6-4, 290-pound body and could emerge as one of the Big South’s top defensive tackles in 2011. Junior Masengo Kabongo (Stratford, Conn.) is another intrigu-ing piece on the roster. A transfer from the University of Maryland, Kabongo played in six games for the Terrapins in 2009, registering a sack against Cal. A standout at Fairfield Prep, Kabongo emerged as one of the top defensive tackles in the nation.

POSITION PREVIEW - LBsThe strongest area of the team in terms of talent and experience is led by junior Craig Richardson (Malden, Mass.). Richardson, a preseason All-Big South selection, tied for the team lead with 85 tackles. The second-team

Page 4: stony brook - CBSSports.comgrfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/ston/sports/m-footbl/auto... · 2011-09-05 · stony brook indoor sports complex • stony brook, ... September 10, 2011 Location:

all-conference selection was the only player on the 2010 team to record a sack, an intercep-tion, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Sophomore Jawara Dudley (Roosevelt, N.Y.) was among a handful of true freshmen who saw significant time last season, and 2011 should be no different. The team’s Defensive Rookie of the Year, Dudley was third among all Big South freshmen with 49 tackles. An injury suffered in the South Florida game cut the season short for sophomore Reginald Francklin (Valley Stream, N.Y.), but he’s back to 100 percent and ready to be a factor. Depth will come from sophomores Andres Trujillo (Miami, Fla.) and Casey Cal-lahan (Tampa, Fla.). At outside linebacker, sophomore Grant Na-kwaasah (Richardson, Texas) was forced into action after numerous injuries and more than held his own. He averaged nearly four tackles a game, making a career-high six against No. 9 Massachusetts. Junior Rich Vitale (Higganum, Conn.), one of the team’s best special-teams players, is undersized, but he more than makes up for it with heart and desire.

POSITION PREVIEW - SECONDARYEach of the starting cornerbacks returns in 2011. Senior D.J. Porter (Charles Town, W.Va.), who moved from wide receiver to cornerback, was lost for the season in the South Florida game but is at full strength and ready for a fifth year with the team. Sophomore Davonte Anderson (Corona, Calif.) was a revelation last season, daring opposing quarterbacks to throw his way. In the home finale against Gardner-Webb, Anderson made four interceptions, setting school and Big South records. Senior Al-Majid Hutchins (East Orange, N.J.) fought through

GAME 2 • Sept. 10, 2011 Stony Brook Seawolves Football Game Notes • 4

injuries to start nine games and made 32 tackles and an interception. Depth will come from junior college transfer Ivan May (El Cajon, Calif.) and sophomores Devante Wheeler (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Taj Johnson (Upland, Calif.). At weak-side safety, senior Cedrick Moore (Lakewood, Calif.), who picked off three passes at Brown, returns to replace Arin West. He’ll be backed up by junior Dan Mulrooney (Pros-pect, Conn.). A transfer from Boston College, Mulrooney has fought through injuries during his career but is healthy and ready to use his FBS experience to his advantage. Sophomore Peace Edafe (Staten Island, N.Y.) adds depth.

Patrolling the other starting safety position is junior Dominick Reyes (Hesperia, Calif.). Reyes started all 11 games, leading all Big South defensive backs with 67 tackles. Backing up Reyes is sophomore Sheldon Armstrong (Long Beach, Calif.).

POSITION PREVIEW - STsJunior Wesley Skiffington (Brandon, Fla.) statistically is one of the best kickers in Stony Brook history -- even with two seasons to go. He made 7 of 12 field goals and 44 of 46 extra points, leading the team with 75 points. In addition to handling the placekicking duties, Skiffington will be the Seawolves’ primary kickoff specialist. Skiffington, sophomore Luke Allen (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and senior Josh Gibson (Reisterstown, Md.) will compete for the job of punter. Gibson will be the holder on extra points and field goals. Nowak is one of the best long snap-

pers at this level, according to Priore. He’ll be backed up by Trujillo. Stony Brook, which gained valuable field posi-tion with a strong kick-returning game, will be bolstered by accomplished special-teams play-ers in Jackolski, Gush, Brevi and Maysonet.

2011 BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLLStony Brook was picked to finish third in the Big South for a third straight season. The Sea-wolves received two first-place votes and 104 points overall.1. THE COACHESStony Brook head coach Chuck Priore is in his sixth season. He owns a 67-37 career record and is 28-28 in five season with the Seawolves. The 2009 Big South Coach of the Year has three titles (Trinity, 2003-05) and three co-champion-ships (Trinity, 2002 & Stony Brook 2009-10) to his credit. Buffalo head coach Jeff Quinn is 2-11 at Buffalo and 3-12 as an interim coach with Central Michigan and Cincinnati.

QUICK HITS VS. SOUTH FLORIDA• The Seawolves shocked the crowd of more than 40,000 with two touchdowns in less than three minutes to take a 14-7 lead.• Stony Brook’s special teams played a key role in both touchdowns. Brock Jackolski forced a fumble that was recovered by Rich Vitale. Then

STONY BROOK 24UTEP 31

El Paso, Texas (28,752)Sun Bowl94 degrees, mostly cloudy

game #1

El Paso, Texas - Six Football Championship Subdivision schools (FCS) beat Foot-ball Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools in 2010. Stony Brook nearly accomplished the feat in its second-ever game. Helped by a solid ground game and some timely de-fense, the Seawolves led for most of the game, but UTEP rallied in the fourth quarter, eventually coming away with a 31-24 win in overtime over Stony Brook.

Junior Miguel Maysonet (Riverhead, N.Y.) and senior Brock Jackolski (Shirley, N.Y.) combined for 199 rushing yards as Stony Brook gained 232 yards on the ground. The defense, led by senior Donald Porter's (Charles Town, W. Va.) two interceptions, recovered two fumbles, including one for a touchdown.

UTEP came back from a 14-point deficit, tying the game at 24 with 4:04 left in regula-tion. It had the first possession in overtime as quarterback Nick Lamaison found Do-navon Kemp for the touchdown on the first play. On Stony Brook's first possession, senior quarterback Michael Coulter (Yorba Linda, Calif.) was looking for Jackolski, but Travaun Nixon intercepted the ball at the four to end the game.

Stony Brook got its offense started on the second possession of the game. After a 24-yard, play-action pass from Coulter to junior Chris Fenelon (Bellerose, N.Y.), Jackolski found space, scampering 34 yards off left guard for the touchdown and a 7-0 Seawolves lead. Stony Brook out-gained UTEP in total yards, 183-55, in the first quarter and by more than 200 yards at halftime.

UTEP got on the board with a 44-yard field goal from Dakota Warren with 13:02 to go in the second quarter.

The Seawolves offense went back to work in the middle of the second quarter. After senior D.J. Porter (Charles Town, W.Va.) picked off Lamaison, Maysonet had a 24-yard rush followed by a 32-yard pass play from Coulter to junior Brett Arce (Coalinga, Calif.), giving SBU a first and goal from the six. The Seawolves advanced to the one, and settled for a 19-yard field goal from junior Wesley Skiffington (Brandon, Fla.) and a 10-3 halftime lead.

UTEP scored on the opening possession of the second half, tying the score at 10, going 63 yards in 11 plays.

Senior Matt Brevi (Tampa, Fla.) keyed the next drive for Stony Brook with two big receptions on third down. On first and 10 from the UTEP 17, Coulter found junior Jor-dan Gush (Dallas, Texas) for a 14-yard gain. Two plays later, junior Kyle Essington (Chino Hills, Calif.) faked the give and went in for the 2-yard touchdown. The drive was 83 yards in 14 plays, taking up more than six minutes of action.

On UTEP's next drive, Lamaison fumbled the ball after a hurry by junior Jonathan Coats (Elmira Heights, N.Y.). Coats recovered the fumble and ran 14 yards for the score, giving Stony Brook a 24-10 lead, its biggest of the game.

UTEP answered with a touchdown on its next drive, helped by a 48-yard reception by Kemp. UTEP then drove the ball down the field all the way to the 2, but the Min-ers were not able to gain any ground on the next three downs, and on fourth down, Porter intercepted Lamaison in the end zone for his second pick of the game with 11:49 to go in regulation.

UTEP again had the ball deep in Stony Brook territory, but the Seawolves came up with another big play. On second and two from the 20, Lamaison found Vernon Frazier for a 19-yard gain, but sophomore Vincent Polo (Wantagh, N.Y.) jarred the ball loose and junior Dominick Reyes (Hesperia, Calif.) recovered the ball in the end zone, forcing a touchback.

With short field position, UTEP scored on its next possession. Lamaison found Eric Tomlinson for a 21-yard score to make it 24-24 with 4:04 left in regulation.

Warren missed a 61-yard field goal wide left as time expired in regulation.
