Dear Friends,In the spring of last year Christian Brothers from around the world gathered

in a spirit of prayer and discernment for our 44th General Chapter in Rome tochart the course for the mission of the Christian Brothers for the next sevenyears. Representing more than 5,000 Brothers from 81 countries were men ofmany races, cultures and languages, who came together in a great spirit of faith, fraternity and hope to consider the needs of theworld, the Church and of youngpeople today, especially the poor, and to ask the question:What is God askingof us today?Faithful sons of St. John Baptist de La Salle, it should come as no surprise

that the delegates to that Chapter firmly recommended the Brothers to renewour existing educational works and to found new works to better serve thepoor and to announce the Gospel to young people. Together with 80,000 educators worldwide, withwhomwe share this educational and evangelizingmission, we touch the mindsand hearts of more than one million young people around the globe.

In service to this mission the Brothers of the three East Coast Districts ofBaltimore, New York and Long Island-New England, came together in retreatthis summer at La Salle University to further lay the foundation for the creationof a new District, De La Salle East, in 2009. There is a great spirit of solidarity, confidence and hope among us as this process moves forward, as well as a con-viction that this union will ensure not only the future vitality of the Lasallianmission but also holds the promise of increased vocations to the Brothers life.

n July 22, 2008, Mr. William H.Knott, son of the late CharlesA. Knott, Sr. (Calvert Hall ’29),accepted, on behalf of his fam-

ily, the gratitude of the Brothers of theBaltimore District for the gift of$470,000 from his father’s estate for themissionary work of the ChristianBrothers. At a luncheon meeting host-ed at Calvert Hall by Br. Benedict Oliv-er, Bill remembered his father as a manwho loved the Church and the Broth-ers, who was active in many charitableendeavors, and who lived his life in aspirit of gratitude.Charles A. Knott’s expressed wish

was that his gift be used to further themissionary work of the Brothers, espe-cially in Kenya and Nicaragua. Byhappy coincidence, Br. John McDon-nell, the Director of Development forthe English speaking Lwanga District

of East Africa, headquartered in Nairo-bi, Kenya, was in the U.S. at the time, and was present for the luncheon.Brother John was able to describe thegreat need of our schools in Africa andthe good work that will be enabled bythe generosity of Mr. Knott’s gift. InAfrica, as in many poor nations, the

presence of the Brothers in a town orvillage makes the difference betweenhaving and not having a school. The Lwanga District, though poor, is

blessed with many young Brotherswhose religious formation and highereducation will now be supported, inpart, through the great goodness andforesight of CharlesA. Knott, Sr. ~ a giftthat will now yield a bountiful returnfor many years to come!As an expression of our apprecia-

tion, Br. Dennis Malloy, Provincial, pre-sented to Bill Knott and his family amedallion of St. John Baptist de LaSalle, along with a citation from thefounder’s fifteenth meditation, “God isso good that he does not leave unre-warded the good work that is done forHim and the service that is rendered toHim, especially for the salvation of theyoung.”

A Memorable Day AT ST. PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL

Bequest of Charles A. Knott, Sr.Will Benefit FSC Missions

t was the first time in the his-tory of the 19th century landmarkthat a Pope had visited SaintPatrick’s Cathedral. On April 19th,in the course of his one week visit tothe United States, Pope BenedictXVI celebrated a special Mass at thecathedral for religious men andwomen, deacons and seminarians.Brother Charles Barbush was one oftwelve religiouswho participated inthe offertory procession. WhenBrother Charles presented the gifts, the Holy Father, recognizing hisrobe and distinctive collar, said,“The Brothers of the ChristianSchools,” and grasped his hand.Brother Charles, who is currently onthe staff of Manhattan College, re-called the Holy Father’s words in

his homily, “By your personal fideli-ty to the ministry entrusted to you,you prepare a path for the Spirit. Forthe Spirit never ceases to pour out

his abundant gifts, to awaken newvocations and missions, and toguide the Church, as our Lordpromised, into the fullness of truth.”

Summer RetreatInspires Eastern U.S Brothers

For De La Salle Christian Brothers, the annual retreat remains one of our most im-portant and cherished practices. Since John Baptist de La Salle invited the first Broth-ers to take time apart for spiritual reinvigoration and reflection on their ministry ofChristian education, this custom has been an honored tradition in our community. The annual retreat took on added meaning this year, as over 275 Brothers from theBaltimore, New York, and Long Island-New England (LI-NE) Districts convened forretreat from July 27 throughAugust 1, 2008, at La Salle University in Philadelphia.Like all retreats, this event provided the Brothers with opportunities for commu-

nal and personal prayer and reflection time, an opportunity for sacramental reconcil-iation, and the chance to renew friendships and to enjoy each other’s company for aweek. More significantly, however, this year’s retreat was a follow up to the Tri-Dis-trict Holy Week retreat in 2006 when the Brothers of the three Districts agreed to ex-plore a common future together by choosing to unite as the new District of EasternNorth America. The 2008 retreat set the goals of continuing the discernment that hadbegun in 2006, to explore the work done by five restructuring committees since thenin light of the Spirit of Faith, to affirm our unity, and to elicit Brothers for future lead-ership roles in the new District.Father Robert Joerger, C.P., an affiliated member of our LI-NE District, served as

the chaplain for the retreat. The Scriptural theme of the retreat was an extended re-flection on John’s Gospel (21: 1 – 19). Father’s homilies during the Eucharistic litur-gies explored various themes of this familiar post-Resurrection passage and alwaysended with the challenge: “When did you last see the face of your Founder?” SeveralBrothers addressed the assembly. Brother Michael French of our Midwest Districtand the current Director of the International Lasallian Studies program (C.I.L.) at ourGeneralate in Rome examined our Mission in light of the various fractures that existin the modern world. Brother Leo Smith of the Baltimore District and the ChristianBrothers Spiritual Center in Philadelphia reflected on the importance of our commu-nity life. Brother Thomas Johnson the Vicar General of the worldwide Brothers’ Insti-

tute and a member of our Midwest District, offered some thoughts about the chal-lenge of leadership, while Brother Michael McKenery of the LI-NE District and cur-rent President of La Salle Academy in Providence, R.I., considered the leadershiptheme from the perspective of each Brother. In the course of the week, the Brothershad several opportunities to discuss these topics in smaller groups. The Brothers who assembled for the retreat were effusive in their appreciation for

the marvelous hospitality and welcome extended to them by the many people whoserved us at La Salle University. We came away from the experience with renewedhope for the future of our vital mission to bring a human and Christian education tothe young, especially to the poor, and found encouragement in the new possibilitiesfor service that our uniting into the District of Eastern NorthAmerica will provide inthe near future. Finally, we affirmed the importance of our vocation and voiced ourwillingness to seek out new Brothers to continue our educational ministry in theChurch.

Named for thefirst American Superior General, Br. CharlesButtimer, this continuing formation and edu-cation program, founded in 1987, studies theperson and gift of John Baptist de La Salle andthe developing story of the Lasallian educa-tional mission. This year’s session, hosted on the beauti-

ful campus of St. Mary’s College in Moraga,California from June 22 – July 4, attracted 116participants who lived worked, recreated andworshiped together for two weeks. The pri-mary goals of the program included discover-ing one’s vocation as an educator and deep-ening their association for future service in themission. The full program spans three summers.

Initially, participants learn about the originsand background of “The Founding Story”.Supported by a vibrant community experi-ence, they are also encouraged to be attentiveto the inner life. The second session offers amodern analysis of the educational vision ofDe La Salle. During the final summer, thecourse focuses on Lasallian spirituality andattempts to enhance each person’s spiritualjourney and call to educational service. While the De La Salle Christian Brothers

continue to pray for and promote permanentreligious consecration, they are also exploringvarious other forms of association to guaran-tee the vitality of the Founder’s vision. Thisgenerative approach creates new life andmakes available a talented and diverse com-munity of teachers to meet, welcome and ac-company another generation.

“Lord Jesus, as I journey on this earthly pilgrimage to you in heaven, please help me know whatvocation I am called to.”

(Prayer to Know MyVocation)

In Memory of “A Brother Among Us”JAMES A. McERLEAN, SR., AFSC

James A. McErlean, Sr., AFSCpassed away on July 28, 2008 at theage of 80. Jim, along with his dearlate wife, Pat, had been closely asso-ciated with the Christian Brotherssince 1950. We were blessed withJim’s friendship, skills, warmth andgentle presence among us for nearlysixty years. At thirty-seven years of age, Jim’s

personal and professional service tothe Brothers was recognized by theconferral of the honor of Affiliationto the Institute (AFSC) by our Supe-rior General. Thus, Jim effectively

had two families: first and foremost, his biological family of wife,Pat, and children Mary Jane, Peg and Jimmy, who willinglyshared their spouse and father with us; secondly, his religiousfamily ~ the Brothers of the Christian Schools.Jim worked voluntarily and tirelessly to maintain our Elkins

Park and Ocean City residences. He kept them in good order byensuring that their electrical systems were safe, efficient and bet-ter than mandated by the applicable utility code. In the days of

our Elkins Park Scholasticate a number of young Brothersworked alongside Jim as helpers and “gophers.” The fraternalrelationships formed during those days would last a lifetime. As the years passed and time took its toll on his agility, Jim’s

electrical work was replaced by other worthwhile endeavors ofservice. He established the Bereavement Committee at St. Hi-lary’s Parish in Rydal, where he also served as an ExtraordinaryMinister of the Eucharist to the homebound and visited the sickin hospitals. His pliers and side cutters were replaced by othertools: a rosary and aworn, yellowed, crinkling prayer book filledwith an ever increasing number of memorial cards to be remem-bered in his prayers.Jim’s greatest loves were participating in daily Mass and en-

joying his beloved wife, children and grandchildren. He also rel-ished the company of his countless friends and colleagues fromthe Knights of Columbus and their federal credit union and theSacred Heart Manor Board of Directors. Over the years Jim andPat were magnificent hosts, sharing their hospitality by welcom-ing all into their lives andhomes in Philadelphia and Sea IsleCity.I was doubly blessed to have Jim asmy cousin and as a Broth-

er. His death truly marks the end of an era. May he rest in peace.(By Br. JohnMcErlean, FSC,

ristina Wilson, a junior at St. John’s College HighSchool, had the opportunity of a lifetime when PopeBenedict XVI visited Washington. Wilson presented aspecial gift to the pope in honor of his 81st birthday.Wilson, two other Catholic

school students and Karen Ristau,President of the National Catholic Ed-ucation Association personally pre-sented gifts to Pope Benedict at a pri-vate meeting on April 16th at the Em-bassy of the Apostolic Nunciature ofthe Holy See. Wilson represented allof the students from the Archdioceseof Washington.Wilson was chosen to welcome the

pope and present him with his firstgift, more than 1.7 million pledgedservice hours from students inCatholic schools, parish religious ed-ucation programs, seminaries and col-leges. After all the gifts were present-ed, each student received rosaries that were blessed by the pope.“The pope was so happy to receive the gifts and to see youngpeople,” said Wilson. “His face lit up when he saw me and thetwo other students. He was so excited and had a big smile. I wasreally touched by his reaction.”

According to St. John’s Principal Jeffrey Mancabelli. Wilsonwas selected from a list of students whose experience matchedtheir passion for the Catholic faith. Wilson is in St. John’s De LaSalle Scholars Program and is a lacrosse student-athlete. Shewas

recently selected as a peer minister, serving as an ambassador of goodwilland assisting in freshmen orientationand retreats. She has also been activein serving others. Last summer, inconjunctionwith theNational StudentLeadershipConference, she helped re-build a plantation in Maryland so thatvisitors could experience the life of aslave. Wilson also volunteers at theChildren’s Inn at the National Insti-tutes of Health, making dinner andcards for patients and families.“This experience gave me a renew-

al of faith,” said Wilson. “Having thissmall moment gave me a feeling ofpeace, completeness and hope. It can

be hard to be a Catholic today, but I feel hopeful after the week’sevents. It was just what I needed to continue to follow Christ.”

(By Chris Woodley, Communications Director,St. John’s College High School)

The above prayer is the best possible de-scription of Brother Kevin Strong, Presidentof Cardinal Gibbons School in Baltimore,Maryland.

At the personal request of CardinalWilliam Keeler, Brother Kevin came to Car-dinal Gibbons in 2003 as the school’s firstPresident. Prior to that appointment he hadbeen working in the Christian Brothers’ For-mation Program after ten years as Presidentof Calvert Hall. To the school and communi-ty’s delight, he brought with him a refresh-ing energy level, a wonderful Catholic spiri-tuality and a new vision for the school. WithBrother Kevin’s arrival a resurgence of “Gib-bons Spirit” was immediately evident.Alumni, faculty, staff and parents rallied be-hind his vision and soon after word spreadabout the good things that were happening. It wasmy distinct pleasure tomeet Broth-

er Kevin in May of 2007 as I interviewed for

the position of Principal at Cardinal Gib-bons. I was struck by his genuine Lasallianspirit and the passion he had for the schooland everyone associated with it. In themonths that followed I took full advantageof Brother Kevin’s experience and insight, his knowledge of the Lasallian network ofschools and his tremendous love for theschool community.Unfortunately, in late December Brother

Kevin was hospitalized with a serious kid-ney condition that required regular dialysistreatment. After three weeks in the hospitalhe was able to return home but, in a subse-quent checkup it was discovered that he hadalso developed prostate cancer. As a result ofthe need to undergo both dialysis and a regi-men of radiation treatments, Brother madethe decision to relinquish his position asPresident of Cardinal Gibbons, a decision itwas my sad duty to announce to our school

community on May 6th. Later in the month, with Brother Kevin in attendance, we gath-ered to dedicate our school courtyard to him.His office overlooked the peaceful, flowerfilled courtyard, so its dedication in his namehad specialmeaning for all of us.We cannowwalk in that space, feel renewed by his spiritand leave energized to continue our educa-tional mission.

This annual assembly convened in Pitts-burgh for the first time from July 20-25.Nearly eighty students participated in theassemblywhose themewas, ‘Witnessing the

mind in dialogue, acceptance of the unique-ness and limitations of each, growth in aspirit of service, and the practice of justiceand charity.” (The Brother of the ChristianSchools Today: ADeclaration, 1967)Father Robert George, AFSC, chaplain at

CAMDEN’S SAN MIGUEL SCHOOLBEGINS 12th YEAR

The SanMiguel School of Camden, NJ is an independent Catholic MiddleSchool for young men of families whose educational needs will be met re-gardless of their financial status. As a Gospel-centered school, the dignityand giftedness of each student is recognized and nurtured within a support-ive community of staff and parents. Its programs provide the necessary aca-demic, spiritual and social skills needed for students to be successful learnersand responsible citizens. The idea of a gratuitous school supported by private donors, companies

and foundations is actually over 325 years old. John Baptist de La Salle, asainted French priest saw the deplorable educational situation of the chil-dren of the poor and working class of his day and thus began a transforma-tive educational movement that would eventually spread to every continent. The hallmark of a Lasallian education is the recognition that each student

is unique and has something significant to contribute to society. It is theteacher’s mission to help the student discover and cultivate his or her giftsand to make them stewards of these gifts. The educational mission of theChristian Brothers invites us to have our eyes open before the inequalitiescreated by our society and to be creative in our response to new needs. Ourmission “must not be reduced tomere assistance, but rather to go to the rootsof poverty in order to find structural solutions….” (Br.Alvaro Rodriguez, Su-perior General of the Christian Brothers)Fast forward 300 years to the late 1980s. The Brothers, responding to the

call of the Institute and the Catholic Church, adapted to the needs of timeand place by establishing the Miguel Schools to educate the new immigrantclasses and underserved youth in the poorest sections of cities throughoutthe U.S. The San Miguel School of Camden opened its doors in September,1997 in the formerMt. Carmel School. Therewe provide “a human andChris-tian education” for boys in the 6th-8th grades whose families desire a faithbased education but cannot afford the higher tuition parochial schools. Ef-forts are made to network within the community to identify students whoare struggling in their current schools and have economic need. Enrollmentis limited to 45 students, which allows for smaller class sizes and individual-ized assistance. Within the framework of an extended school day, much em-phasis is placed on co-curricular activities that foster the development ofmind, body and spirit. The San Miguel School also offers a comprehensive counseling program.

The school Counselor, in cooperationwith the SocialWorker andChild StudyTeam provide a holistic approach toeach boy’s academic and behavioralwell being. Under the supervision ofthe Counseling Center a GraduateSupport Program assists eighthgraders in finding the high school thatbest meets their needs and providessupport and advocacy throughouttheir high school years.San Miguel continues to seek new

partnerships and strengthen existingones in order to provide the financialresources for its future growth andsuccess. We are grateful for the contri-butions of time and resources ofmanycommittedpeople, which has enabledthe San Miguel School to grow intothe wonderful educational opportu-nity it is today.(By Br. Education Office Sponsors Summer ProgramsDuring this past summer Brother Ernest Miller, Director of Lasallian Mission Formation and Director of Education for theBaltimore District, coordinated several workshops for staff and students of our schools. He was assisted by Mr. TimothyDonovan,Assistant Director of Education. The following is their summary of those activities.

Ever since the Christian Brothers pur-chased their beach front property in OceanCity from John Wanamaker in 1898 the sitehas served as a retreat center and summerschool as well as a weekend get-a-way forthe Brothers. Saturday, July 12th, was a pic-ture perfect day, made to order for the 90Brothers who gathered there for our annualDistrict Day.Brother Edward Hofmann, the summer

Director of “Ocean Rest,” along with theyoung men and women working there asLasallian volunteers, were all gracious hoststo the Brothers. After a day on the beach orjust enjoying the ocean breezes on the porch, the Brothers gathered for a late afternoonMass celebrated by Father Tony Janton,AFSC. At the conclusion of the liturgy Broth-er Dennis Malloy gave special recognition tothe Brothers celebrating their jubilees thisyear, citing their many years of dedicatedservice to the Christian education of youth inthe Baltimore District and beyond. A socialhour and delicious catered dinner concludedwith the traditional singing of Honneur aToi, the Brothers’ hymn to their founder,Saint John Baptist de La Salle. Taking advan-tage of a beautiful evening, the singing spiritcontinued on the spacious porch, ably assist-ed by Brother Ray Bronowicz’s repertoire ofsing-a-longs.A special treat awaited the Brothers on

Sunday morning as Brother Joseph Julianocooked up a brunch that would have beenthe envy of a five star restaurant. Compli-ments abounded for Brother Joe and his culi-nary assistants, Brothers Kevin Finn, RobertKinzler, Edward Koronkiewicz and MartinZewe. Once again, we were grateful to beable to celebrate our brotherhood at thisvery special place by the sea.

Dear Friends,

It is my pleasure to share with you our 2008Annual Report of Giving. The accompanying Donor List in-cludes gifts made to the Christian Brothers Development Office and the Saint La Salle Auxiliary betweenJuly 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008.

Our recently completed annual audit showed that we had 10,135 donors, with Development andAuxil-iary donations totaling over $1,340,000. We regret that space limitations prevent us from listing all of ourdonors.

The Brothers of the Baltimore District are profoundly grateful to all of our donors for their generosity thispast year. Your contributions toward the retirement needs of our elderly and infirm Brothers, the educa-tion and formation of our youngest Brothers, and our educational ministries here and abroad are a won-derful expression of your faith-filled support for our service in the Church.

Our benefactors are remembered in the prayers of our retirement communities in Ammendale, Marylandand Lincroft, New Jersey, as well as in our communities throughout the Baltimore District. May the Lordbless you and your loved ones abundantly for your great generosity on our behalf.

Gratefully,

Brother Kevin Stanton, FSCDirector of Development

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

On June 7, 2008, two hundred and forty-eight seniors graduatedfrom La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor, PA. Ceremoniesincluded the traditional awarding of the President’s Medal, whichwas presented this year to The Brothers of the Christian Schools fortheir 150 years of service to La Salle High. Brother Dennis Malloy,Provincial of the Baltimore District, accepted the President’s Medalon behalf of the Christian Brothers. In his remarks Brother Dennis recalled that,

in 1858, six Brothers arrived at St. Michael’sParish at Second and Jefferson Streets inPhiladelphia to work in the grade school, andhow this evolved into what we know as La SalleCollege High School today. Over the last 150years, hundreds of Brothers have served at LaSalle. Today, 20 of the 170 Brothers of the Districtare graduates of the school. Br. Richard Kestler, the current President of La Salle is a 1960 gradu-ate, and Br. James Rieck, Director ofAdmissions,is a member of the Class of ’57.Brother Dennis continued by remembering

that for over 300 years the Brothers have dedi-cated their lives to the call of their founder, St. John Baptist de LaSalle, to serve as ambassadors andministers of Jesus Christ to youngpeople through the ministry of education. “Who we are today mustbe credited to the accomplishments and sacrifices of many greatBrothers who have gone before us. However, our Lasallian mission

today is not possible here at La Salle or anywhere without our part-ners in ministry. Our many talented and dedicated teachers, coun-selors, administrators and staff share the ministry of teaching mindsand touching hearts in the service of the gospel. Our Lasallian mis-sion does not rest on the Brothers alone but is shared with our col-leagues. Todaywe are aworldwide communitywith some 80,000 lay

colleagues and over 5,000 Brothers who animatethe Lasallian Mission to a million young peoplein 81 countries.”Brother Dennis reminded the graduates that

education is not just about developing the mindbut also the heart and soul. “This will help youto become not only men of achievement andcompetence but alsomen of conscience, courageand compassion committed to a life of faith serv-ice and justice.” He recalled Pope Benedict’s re-cent visit to New York City where he addresseda group of young people and reminded themthat Jesus is a constant companion that you canturn to in all moments of life. Brother Dennis en-couraged the new “men of LaSalle” to take these

words seriously and to heart. He concluded, saying, “We are deeplyhonored that you have chosen the Brothers of the Baltimore Districtin this your sesquicentennial year to receive the President’s Medal.”
